If you can stroll through the Canyon Roadhouse without cracking a smile, then I have to say, you’re seriously lacking a funny bone. Heck, you might even be half alive!

Hey there! I want to tell you all about a cool place I found in southern Namibia called Canyon Roadhouse. It’s located about 15km west of the amazing Fish River Canyon. When you arrive, you’ll see this huge building that looks like a barn. It has a bright red roof that says ‘roadhouse’ on it. This building is the center of everything at Canyon Roadhouse. It’s where you check in, where you can buy things at the shop, and where you can relax at the bar or have a meal in the dining room.

When I walk into the Canyon Roadhouse, I’m immediately struck by how much fun the Gondwana Collection has had with the place. The décor is a delightful mash-up of old cars and quirky knick-knacks. The bar, made of corrugated iron, is covered in vintage metal signs promoting everything from the AA to John Deere, Harley-Davidson to BP oil, and Turtle wax to Valvoline.

One sign catches my eye: “Eat here, get gas.” It’s a clever play on words that leaves me chuckling. Another sign proudly proclaims that the hamburgers here are “the way they were before McDonald’s stuffed them up.” It’s a bold statement, and it makes me curious to taste one of their burgers.

As I make my way to the bathrooms, I’m greeted by an army of license plates adorning the walls. They create a unique and quirky wallpaper that adds to the overall charm of this place.

Welcome to the bar, a place where you’ll never be bored. You may have noticed the unique and fascinating decor as soon as you walked in. A large truck serves as the reception desk, giving the bar a distinct and quirky charm.

Take a look around and you’ll spot a collection of old cars scattered throughout the space. There’s an old Chev with a dickie seat at the back, a classic cherry-red Morris Minor, and even a white Mercedes ambulance. You might even catch a glimpse of an old steam-driven tractor.

The creativity doesn’t stop there. One car has its bonnet propped open, acting as a shelf for part of the breakfast buffet. In another area, a couple of vehicles have been transformed into fireplaces, creating a cozy atmosphere during the winter months.

Tables and chairs are strategically placed among the cars, ensuring that no matter where you choose to sit, you’ll have plenty to look at and enjoy. So settle in, order a drink, and soak up the unique and captivating surroundings.

I’m sitting in an old black Fargo truck, where a sleepy roadhouse cat makes itself at home on the cushy green carpet bench-seat. There’s a sign on the wall that catches my eye – “Parking for Italians Only – everyone else gets towed.” And just when I think it can’t get any more intense, another sign pops up, more menacing this time – “Ducati Parking Only – all other vehicles will be smashed.” The walls are adorned with posters that take me back to a different era, advertising names like Thunderbird, Trabant, DKW, and Buick.

Look at the walls of the rooms and you’ll see rusty old tools all over them – wheels with spokes, wrenches, tongs, and more. There are also camelthorn trees, and in the evening, gemsbok come around searching for pods to munch on. This serves as a reminder that this place is a part of an unfenced conservation area. In the morning air, you’ll hear sparrows and prinias chirping in the trees, but by 10 am, it gets scorching hot again. Even in May, the sun beats down relentlessly.

The old shed is a fascinating blend of vintage cars, nostalgic collectibles, and a retro-style diner. It’s like stepping back in time as I wander through its cavernous space. I can’t help but be drawn to the vintage advertisements, with their Coppertone, Borax Extract, and Cadbury logos lining the walls. Movie posters featuring iconic stars like Marlene Dietrich and Mae West add to the sense of nostalgia.

Before setting off on our next adventure, we stop by the restroom, which is plastered with these vintage advertisements. It’s like a trip down memory lane as I take in the sights and soak up the atmosphere. After all, it’s not every day you come across such a unique blend of history and charm.

As we prepare to hit the road again, we swing by the ancient pumps to fill up with some ultra-modern low-sulphur diesel. It’s a fascinating contrast that perfectly encapsulates the essence of this place – a harmonious blend of old and new, tradition and progress. With the tank full and a sense of excitement building inside me, I lean forward, ready for the next leg of our canyon adventure.

If you ever find yourself in the area, don’t be tempted to rush past the Canyon Roadhouse. Instead, make a pit stop and take the time to soak it all in. Indulge in a slice of delicious Amarula cheesecake and let the unique atmosphere wash over you.
