Welcome to Galjoen: A Fresh Seafood Journey in the City
Hey there! I want to share some exciting news with you. The folks behind the popular Belly of the Beast restaurant are bringing Cape Town a brand-new seafood joint that follows the same awesome principles of sustainability. Get ready to dive into Galjoen, a place where Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn are taking things to the next level with a tasting menu, limited seating, and reservations-only policy. And of course, they’re all about using the freshest local ingredients.
Now, let me tell you all about our approach. We’re committed to serving only responsibly caught seafood from right here in South Africa. We stay true to our roots, so if it’s not local, it won’t make it to our menu. We work hand-in-hand with the SASSI list and support local suppliers who are part of sustainable small-scale fishing communities. Plus, we’re all about reducing waste. Since we serve a set tasting menu and operate by reservations only, we’ve virtually eliminated any unnecessary waste.
As we eagerly await the opening, we’ve been treated to glimpses of the menu, teasing our taste buds with dishes like braaied chub mackerel accompanied by tangy tamarind chutney, fresh peach, and zesty masala pickled onion salsa. Plus, there are Saldanha Bay oysters paired with crisp granny smith apple and red onions, among other tantalizing options.
The Name Game
Galjoen – the name of South Africa’s national fish – perfectly embodies the spirit of resilience, adaptability, and strength. These are qualities that really resonate with Neil and Anouchka, as they weathered the storm of the pandemic at Belly of the Beast.
A Nautical Nook
The new restaurant’s decor gives a nod to the bustling harbor, evoking a sense of being out at sea. Think of a mix between contemporary industrial charm, with a dash of nostalgic 80s seafood restaurant flair that harkens back to our childhoods,” Neil explained.
