Boschendal Wine Tasting: The Exciting Adventure on a Real Wine Farm
Written by Claire Gunn
There are two incredible places where you can enjoy a relaxed and delightful wine-tasting experience.
Ever since this place was established all the way back in 1685, Boschendal has been famous for its down-to-earth approach as a working farm, as well as the warm and friendly way it welcomes visitors. With its grand old oak trees, traditional Cape Dutch farm buildings, and magnificent gardens (including an impressive organic vegetable garden that supplies the on-site restaurants), Boschendal’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and its world-class wines make it a must-see destination on your exciting Franschhoek wine-tasting journey.
You can now easily get off the wine tram at the Boschendal Farm platform and hop on a farm shuttle that will take you to one of the farm’s two wine-tasting venues. As you ride, you’ll get a special behind-the-scenes look at how things work on a real farm. You’ll see chickens roaming around freely, pigs called Duroc, and even tractors. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the famous Black Angus herd in the distance.
Once you arrive, you’ll be able to experience wine-tasting right under the shade of a giant oak tree. The Cellar Door tasting tables are set up next to the farm’s beautiful heritage rose gardens, near the old Rhone homestead. It’s a peaceful and picturesque spot away from the main hustle and bustle of the farm. Alongside the wine, you can also enjoy a variety of platters that perfectly complement the flavors of the wine.
When you’re ready for a change of scenery, head over to the historic Werf area. This place is always buzzing with activity and has a rich history.
When you visit the Werf restaurant, you have the option to dine outside at their outdoor tables or inside their old cellar. Sitting outdoors gives you the chance to fully experience the ambience of the historic Werf, while being close to the Tree House play area and picnic lawns. If you prefer a different setting, you can explore the farm shop and check out their tempting display of produce. And if you’re feeling hungry, you can also have lunch at the Deli or Werf restaurant.
Experience a Variety of Tastings and Pairings
Both the Werf restaurant and the Deli offer the same remarkable selection of wine flights. You can choose from six different wine tastings, each showcasing a variety of wines. To make the experience even better, you can pair your wine tasting with a platter of delicious charcuterie from their on-site butchery or some local cheeses.
