Back in the late 1800s, there was an ambitious project to construct a shorter road that would connect two towns. The plan was to start building from each town and meet in the middle. This initiative began somewhere between 1865 and 1880, during a time when the world was gearing up for the First World War, and resources were being redirected.

The exact details of the project’s history are a bit hazy, but according to local stories, the funds that were originally allocated to this road were diverted to support the war effort. As a result, the construction progress on the road was halted.

At the time, one side of the road had made it as far as Perdekop in Greyton, while the other side had reached Takkap and the Rietvlei valley farms in McGregor.

About 3 kilometers in, I arrive at Breakfast Rock. It’s a great spot to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the breathtaking views of the Gobos River on one side and Wolfkloof on the other. As I continue along the jeep track, I notice that the path starts to climb uphill. Eventually, I reach the halfway point, where a sign marks the highest point of the hike.

From there, I begin to descend down a narrow, winding single-track that leads me to the river valley. It’s a bit of a challenge, but exciting at the same time. Once at the bottom, the path takes another turn uphill, leading me to a contour path. I follow this path all the way to Okes Falls, which is the highlight of the entire hike. As I approach the falls, I’m greeted by a series of beautiful waterfalls, flowing down to the Gobos River. There’s also a large pool of water that looks incredibly inviting after all the hiking.

Okes Falls is the perfect spot to unwind and relax. I take off my boots and dip my feet into the cool mountain water. It’s so refreshing! For those seeking a bit more adventure, you can even climb up the side of the falls and jump into the dark, tannin-rich waters. It’s an exhilarating experience that adds an extra thrill to the hike.

Every time I see the majestic mountains, I’m taken aback by their breathtaking beauty. They don’t need to prove anything or impress anyone; they just exist. It’s amazing how much we humans can learn from their ability to simply be, without constant doing.

Before reaching the final ascent of the day, the trail takes us over the stream one last time. Among the dense foliage, we come across gorgeous calla lilies that perfectly complement the unique fynbos. As we approach a buttress, we catch sight of the famous Galg Road, a sign that civilization is near. Some parts of the trail required dynamite to clear rocks, and one wrong step could mean tumbling down the never-ending slope of falling rocks.

As I stared up at the side of the mountain, the words ‘The Road to Nowhere’ etched into the surface, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of weariness wash over me. The description seemed all too accurate – a trail that seemed to disappear into the endless hills. It was disheartening, to say the least.

Little did I know, though, that this road had a purpose. As we trudged along the final switchbacks, our energy waning, we finally reached our destination: Eagle’s Nest. The name seemed fitting, as it provided a much-needed refuge for our tired bodies. And to our delight, it even had a plunge pool! As we settled in, the stunning panoramic views of the Riviersonderend range greeted us, offering a glimpse of the beauty that awaited.

Wow, what a sight! The sun slowly disappeared behind the clouds, bidding us farewell for the day. Some of us watched in awe while others simply enjoyed the beautiful view as we stood in the valley where we had started our journey.

This house is not your typical overnight shelter that experienced hikers are used to. It’s a breath of fresh air! Imagine having not one, not two, but three braai areas – including one that’s indoors. No matter what the weather has in store, it won’t spoil our braai plans.
