With all our equipment packed on our backs and a sense of adventure in our hearts, we headed towards the Peponi Hotel where the Flipflopi and its support boat, Lamu Dhow, awaited us.

Before this journey, most of us had never met. We were introduced to each other during the launch event the previous day, which was filled with soccer games, dhow races, speeches, and festivities. It was also our first taste of the overwhelming media attention we would receive at every stop along our journey. After all the excitement, we had an expedition briefing and got to know our fellow crew members.

We were a diverse group of plastic enthusiasts from different parts of the world – a team as vibrant as the Flipflopi herself.
