Gautengers, did you know that there’s an incredible hiking route right here in your own backyard? If you have a week or more to spare, I highly recommend trying out this circular route into the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. This adventure will take you through stunning forests, majestic waterfalls, and some of the most breathtaking vistas you’ll find in South Africa.
1. Bateleur Nature Reserve
When I left the hectic N1 behind on a Friday afternoon, I instantly felt a sense of relief. The road to Bela Bela wasn’t exactly smooth, transitioning from tar to gravel, but it forced me to slow down and take in the beauty around me. As I traveled along Alma Road, the landscape transformed into a picturesque sour bushveld, teeming with wildlife and dotted with rugged cliffs that make up the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve.
Less than two hours (140 kilometers) from Pretoria, I reached the top of the final hill on the farm road. What lay before me was a natural basin etched with plant-covered gorges and encircled by gentle hills. The Stamvrug hiking trails span 90 kilometers, weaving through native forests filled with lively birds and geckos, and crossing grassy plains dotted with acacia trees. Along the way, I came across zebras, kudus, and giraffes, and to my surprise and delight, the critically endangered Waterberg copper butterfly (Erikssonia edgei), which was thought to have vanished until its rediscovery here in 2013.
Hey there! If you’re looking for a great hiking experience, Bateleur Nature Reserve is the place to be. This stunning reserve is located in a beautiful basin surrounded by hills. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Now, let me tell you about the highlight of the reserve – the amazing Zebra Trail. This trail is six kilometers long and starts at the Stamvrug hut. It takes you on a journey through the escarpment and down a breathtaking kloof filled with ferns and swimming holes. The best part? It caters to hikers of all ages and fitness levels! Whether you’re up for a challenging hike or prefer a more leisurely stroll, this trail has got you covered.
Accommodation
When it’s time to rest your weary legs, Bateleur Nature Reserve has got you covered. They offer two hikers’ huts for R125 per person (minimum four people). If you’re traveling with a group or prefer a bit more comfort, they also have various cottages and houses starting at R150 per person. That’s quality accommodation at an affordable price!

2. Explore Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary
Instead of taking the boring N1 route, we decided to venture on the R101, passing through Mookgopong. It was a much more captivating drive and took us about two hours to cover the 138-kilometre distance.
When I first set my eyes on Thabaphaswa, I couldn’t help but be captivated by its majestic granite peak. It stood tall, like a guiding light, as I made my way towards Mokopane. Little did I know that this impressive mountain would not only be a sight to behold, but also a haven for hikers and climbers.
Located just 18 kilometers from town, Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary is not your typical mountain retreat. It’s a working cattle farm that welcomes families and pets, offering them a chance to reconnect with nature. The sanctuary features a well-marked network of trails, perfect for those who love to explore. These trails can be combined to create full-day adventures or overnight escapades, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
As I embarked on my hiking journey, I was greeted with breathtaking mountain vistas that reminded me of Zimbabwe’s Matopos Hills. The scenery alone was worth the trip, but there was more to Thabaphaswa than meets the eye. Along the trails, I encountered numerous dams where I could take a refreshing swim, providing a welcomed break from the hike.
But it wasn’t just the landscape that caught my attention; it was also the array of trees and birds that added to the magic of Thabaphaswa. As I ventured deeper into the sanctuary, I couldn’t help but be on the lookout for Verreaux’s eagles. They were known to frequent the stiff five-kilometer hike from Dome Rock Camp to the top of Mhahlare Mountain and on to Kanniedood Camp.
If you’re looking for a less demanding hike, I highly recommend the Molokwane Trail. This trail follows a gentle mountain stream and offers a relatively easy trek. For those seeking a challenge, you can extend the hike to a whopping 16 kilometers by picking up the mountain bike trail at Teffo’s Dam. Climbing to The Lookout and back is a great option, especially during sunrise or sunset. Witnessing Thabaphaswa bathed in golden light is an experience you won’t soon forget.
Where to Stay
If you’re planning a visit to Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary, there are a variety of accommodation options available for you to choose from. Whether you prefer camping or a cozy cottage, there’s something to suit every preference and budget.
For those who enjoy sleeping under the stars, there’s the campsites at Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary. The cost is R120 per person, and you’ll have all the essential amenities at your disposal.
If you’re looking for a bit more comfort and privacy, The Pump House thatched cottage is an excellent choice. For R650, you can enjoy a cozy stay with bedding included. If you prefer to bring your own bedding, the price drops to R500. It’s the perfect option for couples.
Another popular choice is the Dome Rock Camp. Nestled among immense granite boulders, the stone and glass units offer a unique experience. For R295 per person, you’ll have bedding, crockery, and cutlery provided. If you prefer to bring your own, the price drops to R195. Plus, kids aged 4 to 12 pay half price, making it a great option for families. And the best part? Dogs are welcome too!
If you’d like to make a reservation or have any questions, call 0823896631 or visit thabaphaswa.co.za.

When I take a stroll through the breathtaking landscapes of Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge, I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and awe. The beauty of this place is truly breathtaking and it never fails to captivate me. The Umsenge Forest Walk is a particular highlight, allowing me to immerse myself in the serenity of nature and walk among giants.
I’m always amazed by the sheer size and majesty of the trees that surround me. As I wander along the forest path, I can’t help but feel small in comparison. The towering trees provide a sense of shelter and protection, making me feel like I’m part of something much bigger than myself.
Every step I take on the forest walk fills me with a sense of tranquility and peace. The sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the wind create a symphony of nature that is music to my ears. I can’t help but pause every now and then to take in the beauty of my surroundings and marvel at the wonders of the natural world.
Walking among these giants is a humbling experience. It serves as a reminder that there is so much beauty and serenity in the world that often goes unnoticed. It’s a gentle nudge to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life, like the rustling of leaves or the warmth of the sun on my skin.
At Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge, I am reminded of the importance of reconnecting with nature and taking the time to appreciate its wonders. It’s a place where I can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and find solace in the tranquility of the forest.
After driving 125 kilometers on the N1 and then taking the R71, which passes Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo province, I found myself immersed in the enchanting mountains of Magoebaskloof in just two hours. Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge, renowned as one of South Africa’s premier birding spots, is nestled in Woodbush indigenous forest within Magoebaskloof. This beautiful destination offers five different habitats, making it ideal for hiking enthusiasts like me.
There are various hiking trails to explore. For an easy stroll, I recommend the 45-minute River Ramble. If you’re up for a challenge, the three-hour, 12-kilometer Majestic Mountain Trail is perfect for testing your fitness levels. However, my personal favorite is the Umsenge Forest Walk. It takes about an hour to complete, guiding you through the majestic yellowwood trees and past a remarkable 2000-year-old cabbage tree (Cussonia spicata). The serene atmosphere and breathtaking views make this walk a must-visit.
When you visit the afromontane and riverine forest, informative pamphlets can give you a brief overview of the history, trees, and wildlife you might see. But don’t miss the opportunity to have a Kurisa Moya guide accompany you. They can provide more details and point out the special birds that inhabit the forest.
If you have some extra time, I recommend taking a stroll along the nearby Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail. This trail takes you through the Woodbush Forest, which happens to be the second largest indigenous forest in South Africa, right after Knysna. It’s a fantastic place for a short hike, especially if you hike from the Woodbush Hut to the Saligna gums. These are the tallest trees in all of Africa!
Welcome to Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge! Get ready to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and tranquility of our eco-friendly accommodation options. Whether you’re looking for a forest cabin, a secluded mountain cottage, or a restored farmhouse, we have the perfect place for you starting at just R450 per person. 4. Explore the Wonders of Modjadji Nature Reserve
As I headed east on the winding dirt road called the ‘J’ road, I found myself going through the beautiful forest and past the breathtaking Debegeni Falls. It was quite a sight to behold! Eventually, I reached the R71, near the top of the Magoebaskloof Pass. The road continued with its twists and turns, leading me through towering pine trees until it finally took me to tea plantations and orchards.
Continuing on the R36, I found myself entering the territory of the Rain Queen, a legendary figure who is the leader of the Lobedu dynasty. North of Tzaneen Dam, the road became quite bumpy with potholes, but that didn’t deter me. I was determined to reach my destination: the Modjadji Nature Reserve. It took me about two hours to drive the 90 kilometers from Kurisa Moya, but it was well worth it.
Don’t worry if you can’t find any marked trails or maps of the reserve. That’s part of the adventure! This place is truly special because it’s home to the largest concentration of a rare plant called the Encephalartos transvenosus. These unique cycads cover the hilltop like a bunch of bristles, creating an incredible sight. As you start your hike, you’ll notice a steep cliff in the distance. If you walk for about 20 minutes, you’ll reach the top of Execution Hill. Back in the 19th century, the local Balobedu people would bring intruders to this cliff edge, tie stones to them, and roll them down. Quite a chilling history!
There’s something magical about exploring the lush plants and ancient rocks of Modjadji Nature Reserve. It feels like stepping back in time and connecting with nature in a deep and primal way. As I wander through the towering cycads, the moss-covered rocks, and the vibrant ferns, I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and awe.
If you’re up for a bit of a hike, you can continue your adventure all the way to African Ivory Route’s Cultural Camp. It’s about five kilometers away, and the journey will take you over the mountain. But if you prefer a shorter trek, you can stay closer to the reception area and marvel at the oldest cycads in the reserve. Their twisted branches resemble caterpillars, and their bright orange cones add a burst of color to the surroundings. Afterward, you can take a leisurely stroll down to the dam, making it a round trip of 12 kilometers.
Accommodation
When it comes to accommodation, Modjadji Nature Reserve has the Modjadji Cultural Camp. This community-owned camp offers cozy rondavels with self-catering facilities. You’ll need to bring your own bedding, but if you don’t feel like cooking, you can book meals in advance. Alternately, you can stock up on supplies and wood in Haenertsburg or Tzaneen. The accommodation costs R230 per person.
Food
If you’re looking for fresh, subtropical produce, make sure to stop by the Wheelbarrow Farmstall in Tzaneen on the R71. You can contact them at 0827394424.
Just off Modjadji Road, there’s a unique bar called the Sunland Baobab. It’s nestled inside a baobab trunk, offering a one-of-a-kind experience. Give them a call at 0824132228.
5.Five Assegais Country Estate
From Modjadji, I headed towards Mpumalanga, taking the Abel Erasmus Pass and then turning left onto the Panorama Route. Along the way, I stopped at Bourke’s Luck Potholes and took a short walk on the Rainforest Trail from God’s Window. These walks not only gave me a chance to stretch my legs but also showcased the remarkable geology of the area.
Hey there! So, picture this: you’re on a 20-minute stroll through a breathtaking forest, surrounded by lush greenery. The destination? God’s Window, where you’ll be treated to endless views that stretch as far as Mozambique! How cool is that? I bet it’s a sight to behold. And guess what? You can capture this incredible moment with a photo, just like Teagan Cunniffe did!
Now, here’s where things get interesting. After our tranquil forest walk, we headed south, passing through Graskop and Sabie until we reached the N4. On the N4, we encountered some thunderous 18-wheelers, which definitely added a bit of excitement to our journey. But fear not, we only spent a short time in their company before taking an exit at eNtokozweni (also known as Machadodorp). From there, we hopped onto the R541 road, headed towards eManzana (or Badplaas if you prefer to use its more common name).
Our final destination? Five Assegais Country Estate. Let me tell you, it was well worth the journey. We traveled over 400 kilometers and spent over five hours on the road to get there, but it was absolutely worth it. This place is home to the fantastic Num-Num Trail, one of the best multi-day hikes you’ll find in the entire country. Trust me when I say that the trails here are no walk in the park – they’re challenging, but that’s what makes them so exhilarating.
Now, don’t worry. If you’re pressed for time or don’t consider yourself a fitness enthusiast, you can still have a blast at Five Assegais Country Estate. Believe it or not, there’s a whole bunch of fun waiting for you on the plateau, where you can explore these cool sandstone mazes. It’s like being in your own little adventure movie!
So, there you have it. An incredible journey through forests, breathtaking views, thrilling road experiences, and awesome hiking trails. Five Assegais Country Estate has it all. If you’re looking for an adventure that will leave you in awe, this place is definitely for you. Explore the trails, take in the stunning scenery, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
When I look at the left view of the Three Rondavels, it takes my breath away. The towering cliffs and the pristine landscape give me a feeling of awe and wonder. The right side, on the other hand, tells a different story. It’s the story of Tom Bourke, the unfortunate explorer who thought he found gold in the eroded ‘Giant Kettles’ at Bourke’s Luck Potholes, only to be proven wrong.
Now, let me tell you about the best day hike you can take. It’s called the Escarpment Trail, and it’s a challenging 14-kilometre trek that starts from Aloe Kaya camp. This hike has everything you could ever wish for as a hiker. You’ll encounter a magnificent waterfall that will take your breath away. You’ll have the chance to spot some wildlife along the way, adding a touch of adventure to your journey. And that’s not all. Brace yourself for a steep climb and a sense of thrill as you navigate through the rugged terrain. You can even cool down and relax in the rock pools along the trail. But the best part comes at the end of the hike. As you reach the finish line, you’ll be mesmerized by the spectacular rock formations that will leave you in awe. And after this incredible experience, it’s time for a three-hour drive back to Gauteng, where you can reflect on the unforgettable memories you made.
Where to Stay
Welcome to the Aloe Kaya camp at Five Assegais Country Estate! Nestled into the beautiful sandstone gullies on the edge of the escarpment, this is truly a one-of-a-kind place to stay (and it’s only R313.50 per person). As you relax and take in the breathtaking views, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility and luxury that only a four-star lodge like Five Assegais Country Lodge can offer. And if you prefer a self-catering option, you can do that too for only R684 per person. Just let us know if you’d like catering and we’ll take care of it for you. Give us a call at 0828896757 or visit fiveassegais.co.za for more information.
Looking for more to do?
Don’t miss Bourke’s Luck Potholes! It’s a fascinating sight where you can see deep, multi-coloured potholes that were carved out of the bedrock over countless years by swirling water. This is the spot where the rivers of joy (Blyde) and sorrow (Treur) meet, and it’s truly a natural wonder. For more information, give them a call at 0828793945 or visit graskop.co.za.

Before we get started, I want to let you know that prices can change at any time, so it’s always a good idea to double-check with the establishment or supplier before you make any travel plans.
Now, let’s talk about the importance of choosing the right travel destination. We all know that planning a trip can be overwhelming. There are so many options and factors to consider – the climate, the attractions, the cost, and so on. But don’t worry, I’m here to help you navigate through it all.
When you’re looking for the perfect travel destination, it’s important to take into account your preferences, interests, and budget. What are you looking for in a vacation? Do you prefer relaxing on a beach or exploring a bustling city? Are you interested in history and culture, or are you more of an adventure seeker? And of course, you need to think about how much you’re willing to spend. All of these factors will help you narrow down your options and find the destination that’s right for you.
So, how can you go about choosing the perfect travel destination? Well, it all starts with understanding what you’re looking for. Take some time to think about what you want out of your vacation. Do some research, read travel blogs, and talk to friends who have been to different places. The more you know about a destination, the easier it will be to decide if it’s the right fit for you.
But remember, choosing a travel destination is not just about finding a place that matches your interests and budget. It’s also about considering practical factors such as safety, accessibility, and seasonality. Is the destination you’re considering safe for travelers? Can you easily get there by plane, train, or car? And is the time of year you’re planning to go a good time to visit? These are all important questions to ask yourself before making a decision.
Ultimately, the choice of your travel destination is a personal one. What works for someone else might not work for you. That’s why it’s important to trust your instincts and go with a destination that feels right to you. After all, it’s your vacation, and you deserve to have an amazing experience.
So, if you’re ready to start planning your next adventure, keep these factors in mind. Listen to your heart, do your research, and you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect travel destination.
Please note that prices are subject to change at each establishment or supplier’s discretion. Please be sure to check with them before travelling.
