Under new ownership, this unique hotel now sports a fresh new look, complemented by a captivating retrospective exhibition by the talented local artist, Nigel Hewitt.

Let me tell you the fascinating story of how this place came to be.

Like all great stories, it starts with an adventure. I was part of a motorcycle tour through Klein Karoo Tankwa in 2021. On our last night, we made a stop in Barrydale, a town I had only passed through before. Our accommodations for the night were at the Karoo Art Hotel, which had a rather peculiar name.

When I first laid eyes on it, I have to admit that I wasn’t impressed. The hotel was in desperate need of some tender love and care, with peeling paint and a worn-out appearance. It seemed like it had fallen victim to the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and was barely hanging on by a thread. However, there was something intriguing that caught my attention – a banner proudly announcing an upcoming auction scheduled for Wednesday.

Initially, I didn’t pay much heed to it. But as time went on, the idea started to grow on me. It’s funny how things work out sometimes. On a whim, my partner Sue and I made the spur-of-the-moment decision to take a chance and buy the hotel. We were filled with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty as we embarked on this new adventure.

Not long after our impulsive decision, we started the much-needed renovations. It was a challenging process, but we were driven by our determination to transform the hotel into something truly remarkable. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we were prepared to put in the effort and sacrifice.

Slowly but surely, our joint efforts began to bear fruit. The hotel started to come alive with fresh coats of paint, new furniture, and a renewed sense of purpose. People began to take notice and started showing interest in our little piece of paradise.

Now, as I sit here reflecting on our journey, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. We turned a rundown establishment into a haven for weary travelers. Our once-dilapidated hotel has been given a new lease on life, and the future looks promising.

What Can You Expect at the Brand New Karoo Art Hotel?

When you visit the recently renovated hotel, you’ll be immersed in all things artistic. It has just opened its doors with a special exhibition showcasing the life’s work of Hewitt. This retrospective exhibition features 120 pieces from his private collection, all available for purchase.

But art extends beyond paintings. The Map Room, as the name suggests, is a haven for explorers. It’s filled with a treasure trove of routes – from road trips and motorbike adventures to mountain biking, trail running, and hiking.

This winter, the hotel will welcome a diverse group of creatives. Artists, writers, artisans, and free-thinkers will participate in residence programs, delving into the various arts celebrated at the Karoo Art Hotel. The first residency focuses on The Art of the Memoir.

When I walked into the reception area, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had been transformed into an art gallery. It was a beautiful sight that immediately caught my attention.

The art exhibition, known as The Art of the Memoir programme, will take place from 18-20 March. This exciting event will feature renowned author Jo-Anne Richards, who wrote the bestselling book “The Innocence of Roast Chicken.” In addition, Joanne Hichens, another accomplished author and writing coach, will be there to assist. I was thrilled to learn that this workshop was designed by All About Writing, an esteemed international writing school co-founded by Jo-Anne Richards herself.

When I wake up in the morning and head out for a bike ride, I always make a stop at the bagel shop. It’s become a ritual for me and many other cyclists as well.

This place isn’t just your average café. Rick and Sue, the owners, have created something truly special here. They’ve transformed it into not just a place for art on the walls, but a celebration of art in every form. From the exquisite dishes served up in their classic Karoo country kitchen, to the carefully crafted drinks at the bar, and even the mouthwatering delights coming out of their artisan bakery – everything is a work of art.
