As you reach Malgas, a unique experience awaits you. The hand-drawn pont, the last of its kind in South Africa, carries vehicles of all shapes and sizes across the majestic Breede River. This tradition has been going on since the 1800s, and every day, from sunrise to sundown, the pont tirelessly shuttles people and their vehicles across the river.

After a dusty and sheep-filled journey, I finally arrived in Bredasdorp. Unfortunately, the big antique store there has closed down. But don’t worry, you can still find a few treasures scattered among the second-hand knick-knacks at The Corner Shop or Meelmuis. Keep going along the R316, and you’ll reach Napier, a town filled with places to satisfy your curiosity. If you’re into vintage clothing, check out the Red Windmill Farmstall. My Skat is another great place to find quirky collectibles, vintage items, and old furniture. And if you’re looking for restored antique furniture, Napier Antiques has been in the business for 20 years. Just above the main road, you’ll stumble upon Blue Door Country Store, where vintage items can be found amidst the charming clutter. And if you’re a history buff, make sure to visit Greta’s Place. She has an impressive collection of framed photos and prints, including General Louis Botha and General Christiaan de Wet from the Boer War. For a bit of fun, stop by Duane on Main. Not only can you find retro and vintage items for sale, but you can also get your hair styled in vintage fashion too.

Continuing my journey, I made my way towards Stanford, a charming town with a rich history. It was here that I had the pleasure of meeting Irene Tomlinson at Sir Robert Stanford Home of Antiques and Collectables, who graciously shared the town’s fascinating background with me.

Nestled along Queen Victoria Street, the town’s main thoroughfare, I discovered a treasure trove of antiquities and nostalgia. Stanford Trading Store, TAT Antiques & Vintage Decor, and The New Junk Shop beckoned with their alluring displays. Of particular interest was The New Junk Shop, which boasted an impressive collection of authentic postcards dating back to the 1950s.

If you happen to visit Stanford on a weekend, keep an eye out for Lionel of Stanford Upcycle. Positioned across from the Spar, Lionel showcases his unique assortment of weathered goods, each with its own rustic charm.

So, I was in Stanford, and I decided to take the R43 road to Hermanus. I ended up spending a few amazing hours at Romantiques, this super cool place with 13 different rooms all filled to the brim with a huge collection of old stuff, retro things, and antiques. They even have a little cinema where they screen old movies, like the classic Casablanca. You should definitely check it out!

There’s another really popular antique shop called Chilli Pepper Lifestyle, but don’t forget to leave some time to explore the maze of rare books at Hemingway’s of Hermanus. It’s totally worth it, trust me.

Then, as I was heading back to Cape Town, I took Harbour Road in Kleinmond. You won’t believe it, but there are so many great places to eat there, and you can also find some cool vintage clothes and retro items at this place called Anew. It’s so much fun!
