An enchanting seaside stay at Tintswalo Atlantic Hout Bay

Winona Griggs

Welcome to Tintswalo Atlantic, Hout Bay’s Seaside Sanctuary

As I arrive at Tintswalo Atlantic, I leave my car halfway up Chapman’s Peak Drive and hop on a shuttle that takes me on a scenic journey down a curving road, winding through the mountainside until I reach the rugged shoreline below. The sight of The Sentinel and Hout Bay is absolutely captivating, like something out of a dream. I can’t help but get excited about the breathtaking sunset that awaits me later. But can this lodge truly live up to such a magnificent view?

“This place has endured two devastating fires, one that spread across the fields and the other that engulfed the kitchen,” a staff member tells me as we make our way to my room. They point out the remnants of a burnt hammock, a stark reminder of the lodge’s resilience and its ability to rise from the ashes.

As I step into the top villa, something immediately grabs my attention and captivates me. I’m here in the Elba Island Suite, a name that transports me to the scenic wonders of Tuscany, Italy. In ancient times, this island was renowned for its valuable mines and rich iron resources. It even holds the extraordinary tale of Napoleon Bonaparte’s 300-day stay. Today, Elba Island has transformed itself into a popular tourist destination, celebrated for its exquisite wines and stunning attractions.

The moment I enter, I realize that each room in the villa is a masterpiece in its own right. Inspired by the explorations of the Tintswalo Lodges co-founders, Warwick and Lisa Goosen, and Lisa’s parents, Gaye and Ernest Corbett, who have a deep passion for interior design, every suite embodies the spirit of a unique island. Sharing my villa is another suite called Corsica, and together they symbolize three generations of devotion to artful living. Tintswalo has become a haven for those who love to indulge in the experience of hopping between different suites, each offering its own distinct charm.

When I walk into my suite, I am immediately captivated by its luxurious features. There’s a grand four-poster bed that invites a peaceful night’s sleep, surrounded by elegant wingback chairs that beckon you to relax. The room is adorned with a warm fireplace, perfect for cozy evenings. But my favorite part is the enormous bathroom, complete with Africology products and a magnificent Victorian bath positioned next to a window that offers a breathtaking view of The Sentinel.

As I settle into the suite, I notice a thoughtful touch – Steven, the Head of Evening Turndowns, has used shells to spell out ‘welcome’ on the ottoman. It instantly makes me feel at home. I know that when I return from dinner, I’ll find my clothes neatly folded, a plush robe and comfortable slippers waiting for me on the bed.

This villa is more than just a luxurious escape; it’s also perfect for families. The spacious layout and thoughtful amenities create an ideal environment for relaxation and enjoyment. And if you’re looking to indulge, the staff can arrange a spa experience in one of the suites while you sleep soundly in the other. They’ll even serve you a delicious meal right there, if that’s your desire.

In addition to being a haven for individuals and families, this villa is often chosen for intimate wedding ceremonies, proposals, or small corporate getaways. The serene atmosphere and attentive staff make for unforgettable moments and memorable experiences.

When I think about my time at Tintswalo Atlantic, I find myself reflecting on the moments I spent just sitting and taking it all in. The owners of this place really knew what they were doing when they created all these incredible spaces to relax and appreciate the beauty around you.

One of my favorite spots was the wrap-around balcony of our villa. It had these comfortable loungers and a dining area where we could enjoy our meals while soaking in the view. And let me tell you, the view was absolutely breathtaking. It felt like we were perched on the edge of the world.

Another highlight was the lounge area. They had this amazing cocktail of the day, and I couldn’t resist trying it. Plus, they had a bottomless wine bar, which was a dream come true for me. I loved sitting there, sipping on my drink, and just taking a moment to relax and unwind.

Right next to the lounge was a deck with a heated pool. It was the perfect place to cool off and enjoy a refreshing swim. They even had these relaxation nets and a cozy daybed where I could lie down and let all my worries drift away.

But the real magic happened on the rocks below. There, I found a hammock and a swing, perfectly positioned to take in the stunning surroundings. The staff took such good care of me, always ready to bring me a glass of bubbly without even needing to ask. It was pure luxury.

And then there was the sunset. Oh, the sunset. Words can’t really do justice to the beauty I witnessed. From the deck, I watched as the sky transformed from burnt orange to violet, and finally, to deep indigo. It was as if nature herself was putting on a show just for me.

And as the day turned into night, The Sentinel, a majestic mountain in the distance, slowly faded into darkness. But the twinkling lights of Hangberg homes took its place, casting a warm and inviting glow.

My time at Tintswalo Atlantic was truly unforgettable. It’s a place that captures the essence of luxury and tranquility, and I feel so lucky to have experienced it.

Hey there! Let me tell you about my amazing dining experience at Chefs Warehouse Tintswalo. It’s a restaurant that opened up last year in November, and you won’t believe the quality of the food they serve. They have this unique concept where they serve global tapas, which are like small plates from all around the world.

When the restaurant first opened, it gained a lot of recognition. It was even named one of the best new restaurants in the world by Condé Nast Traveller on their Hot List for 2021. Isn’t that incredible? People just couldn’t get enough of the delicious food and the amazing dining experience.

But the awards didn’t stop there. The next year, the restaurant won the title of South Africa’s Best Hotel Restaurant in the World Culinary Awards for 2022. Can you imagine how proud they must have felt? It’s such a huge honor and a testament to the incredible talent of the chefs and the whole team at Chefs Warehouse Tintswalo.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the restaurant also received a One-star rating in the 2022 Eat Out Awards and a Two Plate award in the 2023 Gourmet Guide ratings. These are both prestigious accolades that recognize the restaurant’s exceptional cuisine and the dedication they put into every dish.

So, if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable dining experience, I highly recommend visiting Chefs Warehouse Tintswalo. You won’t be disappointed. It’s the perfect place to indulge in a variety of mouthwatering global tapas, created with love and a passion for food. Trust me, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss!

When it comes to cooking, Head Chef Braam Beyers had a classic French style. But our current Head Chef, Cameron Smith, takes a more playful and experimental approach, blending different culinary traditions together. This fusion creates some incredible dishes that I absolutely love!

One of my favorites is the barbecued swordfish. It’s cooked to perfection in Hout Bay, and served with spiced dahi, coconut atchar, and carrots confitted in turmeric and coriander. To add some texture, it’s accompanied by a buckwheat and cashew nut twirl, all topped off with a drizzle of coriander oil. And for an extra burst of flavor, there are coriander shoots and curry leaves sprinkled on top.

Another amazing dish is the tender duck breast. It’s served with a port reduction and smoked cashew nut puree. On the side, you’ll find a delicious candied pear tartlet, celeriac, and gorgonzola mousse. And to make it even more mouthwatering, it’s finished off with some Parma ham and a decadent bourbon jus poured over the top.

With a belly full and the soothing sound of ocean waves in my ears, I drift off to sleep. Tintswalo is a special kind of luxury – it’s elegant, yet not intimidating. You don’t have to worry about accidentally breaking anything here. Instead, it feels like a warm extension of my own home, with personal touches from the owner evident in every nook and cranny. And the staff goes above and beyond to make sure your every need is taken care of.
