A Swingin’ Jazz Guide to Joburg

From the moment you step into the vibrant streets of Johannesburg, it’s like your soul starts playing a tune – a tune that’s made for jazz lovers like me. If you’ve got rhythm in your feet and a love for the smooth sounds of saxophones and trumpets, you’re in luck because this city knows how to jazz it up. Let me take you on a musical journey through the jazz scene in Joburg, where the music flows like the heartbeat of the city.

First things first, there’s a jazz joint for every taste. Whether you’re a fan of classic swing or modern fusion, Joburg has got you covered. The famous “Bassline” is a must-visit spot where legendary jazz musicians have been making magic for years. As I step into this iconic venue, the energy hits me like a wave, and I can’t help but get swept up in the rhythm. The notes dance through the air, carrying me away to a world where worries melt and all that matters is the music. The crowd gathers, united by their shared love for the art form, and it’s a beautiful sight to behold.

But the jazz scene in Joburg is not just limited to traditional venues. You can find this music pulsating through the streets, infusing the air with its soulful melodies. One of my favorite things to do is to wander through the Maboneng Precinct, where the sound of jazz spills out from open windows and doorways. It’s a symphony of sound that fills every corner, and as I follow the music, I get to discover hidden gems and secret performances that add an element of surprise to my journey.

If you’re looking for a more intimate jazz experience, then the “Korner” is the place to be. Tucked away in the heart of Braamfontein, this cozy venue is where I go when I want to get up close and personal with the music. The dimly lit room creates an atmosphere of mystery, and as the musicians take the stage, I feel like I’m part of something magical. The music surrounds me, wrapping me in its warm embrace, and for a moment, time stands still.

But the jazz scene in Joburg is not just about the music – it’s about the people too. The jazz community here is like a family, welcoming and inclusive. As I talk to fellow jazz enthusiasts, I’m struck by their passion and knowledge. They’re not just here to listen; they’re here to share stories, exchange ideas, and keep the spirit of jazz alive. It’s a community that understands the power of music to bring people together, and I feel lucky to be a part of it.

So, if you find yourself in Joburg with a hankering for some jazz, don’t worry – the city has got your back. From the legendary venues to the hidden gems, the music is waiting to sweep you off your feet. Let the rhythmic melodies guide you through the streets, and you’ll discover a world where the language of music transcends boundaries and connects us all. Get ready to immerse yourself in the swinging sounds of Joburg – it’s a jazz lover’s paradise.

A swingin jazz guide to Joburg

As a young adult, I found myself at Wits University’s Braamfontein Campus East. This was my first taste of independence after leaving home, and I must admit, it was a time of excitement and uncertainty. Braamfontein, or “Braam,” as we called it, became my home for four years. While those were socially buzzing times, they were also a reminder of my youthful inexperience. Now, as I prepare to return for an assignment, I can’t help but feel a mix of apprehension and curiosity. I am hesitant to retrace my steps and revisit the memories of my stumbling journey into adulthood. It is not that I long for the past and the way things used to be, but rather, I approach this task with a sense of wonder, eager to see how much I have grown and how far I have come.

But hey, we’re in 2017 now, and hopefully, Braam (short for Braamfontein) has moved on from that incident. In the past four years, this place has seen some significant changes, and honestly, it’s hard to know where to begin. All I know is that I’m drawn to its vibrant music and art scene, which has thrived since The Orbit jazz club opened its doors in 2014, just a year after I left.

Over time, I’ve developed a bit of a jazz addiction, and it’s been fueled by talented artists like Nduduzo Makhathini, Thandi Ntuli, and Nomfundo Xaluva – all regular performers at The Orbit. Their music speaks to me as a young black person trying to find my footing in South Africa today. It’s like they’re channeling our post-apartheid experiences and offering commentary through their creative endeavors. And the fact that they’re young, just like me, makes it all the more relatable. We’re all searching for our place in this vast world.

I’m sitting here with Thandi Ntuli, an incredibly talented pianist. She happens to be from the same place as me, Soshanguve, the largest township in Pretoria. Thandi has been living in Joburg for five years now, making a name for herself in the local jazz scene with her mesmerizing melodies and her debut album, The Offering. And guess what? She was just named the 2018 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz. How amazing is that?

We decided to meet up at Unisa’s ZK Matthews Hall, where Thandi is currently rehearsing. Let me tell you, being in her presence is something special. She has this calmness about her and speaks so softly, almost as if every word she utters is carefully chosen.

‘You know what’s great about the jazz scene in Joburg? There are these awesome places where musicians can perform and try out different styles and ideas in front of an audience that really gets it,’ she says. Then she tells me she’s playing tonight at The Orbit with her band, The Rebirth of Cool (a clever reference to Miles Davis’s iconic jazz album, Birth of the Cool). Talk about a perfect coincidence! And in that moment, I’m filled with joy to be back in the place where I used to hang out.’

Have you heard of Braamfontein? It’s a happening place that’s becoming more and more popular. You’ll find cool coffee shops and restaurants, as well as plenty of things to do. It’s all part of the city’s revitalization. And right in the heart of Braamfontein, you’ll find two iconic bars – Great Dane and Kitchener’s. Great Dane has a legendary reputation, and Kitchener’s is one of the oldest nightspots in Joburg. Even with all the new places popping up, these bars have managed to keep their original charm. If you’re looking to hang out with trendy locals, this is the place to be.

As I enter The Orbit tonight, I’m immediately captivated by its unique atmosphere. It’s not like any other jazz club I’ve been to before. The moment I step inside, I’m transported to a world where my wildest jazz fantasies come to life.

The dimly lit dining area on the ground floor sets the perfect mood. The tables are cozy, inviting me to sit back and relax. All eyes are drawn to the stage, bathed in warm lights, where the magic is about to unfold.

Upstairs, things take on a more stylish tone. The dim lighting creates an intimate ambiance, making me feel like I’ve stepped into a secret hideaway for jazz lovers. As I make my way through the room, I can’t help but be drawn to the stylish tables, buzzing with energy and excitement.

The crowd here is young and vibrant, deep in conversations or leaning over the bar in anticipation. Suddenly, an announcement breaks through the chatter, reminding everyone to give the music their complete attention. In an instant, all eyes turn towards the stage, ready to be enthralled.

The moment the music starts, I’m captivated. Thandi is on fire, pouring her heart and soul into her performance. She effortlessly switches between singing and playing the piano, drawing us into her world. It’s like she’s having a personal conversation with each and every one of us, sharing stories and cracking jokes along the way. We can’t help but be completely enthralled by her talent, hanging onto her every word. And when the final note fades away, the entire crowd explodes with an eruption of applause and cheers. We rise to our feet as one, showing our appreciation for the incredible show she’s just given us. But the night is far from over. Tha_Muzik and DJ Kenzhero take over, spinning a mix of old school classics and modern hits. The energy in the room shoots through the roof as we dance and sing along, losing ourselves in the music until the early hours of the morning. It’s a night I won’t soon forget, filled with incredible artists and passionate music lovers, all united by our love for the magic of live performances.

So, are you ready to experience the rebirth of cool? If you’re looking for a night that will leave you in awe, then you’ll love what Thandi and the rest of the band have in store for you. With their soulful sound and magnetic stage presence, they have the power to transport you to another world, if only for a few precious hours. So grab your dancing shoes and get ready to let loose, because this is a night you won’t want to miss. The only question is, will you be joining us on the dance floor?

The next day I give in to the longing for ‘the good old days’. So I go to the Neighbourgoods Market with an old friend from university for lunch. Then we wander through the Wits Art Museum to check out an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s work. This museum opened in 2012 and has a collection of over 10,000 artworks, from different time periods and styles. When it’s time for dinner, I cross over the Nelson Mandela Bridge to Newtown, which is right next to Braam, where my favorite restaurant, The Potato Shed, is located.

Lanterns illuminate the outside area at Great Dane, casting a beautiful glow against the wall. Welcome Lishivha captured this mesmerizing scene in a photo.

Yet, my pursuit of jazz continues as I venture to Westdene on a Sunday morning. This neighborhood, located near the historic Sophiatown, holds a special place in South African jazz history. Thandi once shared with me the hidden gem that awaits in Westdene. “If you want an intimate experience filled with live performances, poetry, and a vibrant community of artists, photographers, writers, musicians, and poets, you need to visit the Afrikan Freedom Station,” she said. This venue’s purpose is to preserve the cherished memories and soulful melodies of Sophiatown.

As I walk into the venue for an open poetry reading, I can feel the excitement in the air. The room is filled with poets and poetry enthusiasts, all eager to share their words. I find a seat next to the renowned poet, Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, a talented writer who has released several poetry collections. Her latest work, “Ice Cream Headache in My Bone,” is the focus of her reading tonight.

The ambiance is cozy, like being in a lounge with friends, as each poet takes their turn at the microphone. After each performance, there is a moment of stillness, allowing everyone to reflect on the emotions and thoughts stirred by the poems.

Later in the evening, I return to The Orbit for the Window Session, a jam session for musicians. While jazz and whisky are often paired together, I decide to savor a glass of Pinot Noir instead. I want to fully appreciate the performances and avoid any liquid courage-induced misunderstandings of the artists’ intentions. I settle into my seat and allow myself to be captivated by the fusion of jazz with different genres, ranging from Afro-fusion to hip-hop.

A pianist and a bass guitarist come together to perform at The Orbit’s Window Sessions. I get to witness the magic of talented musicians from all over, including Ghana, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho, who have never played together before. And yet, in that moment, they create something truly extraordinary. It’s not your typical karaoke performance; it’s a beautiful collaboration that goes beyond words.

As I listen to the diverse musical styles, I can’t help but feel a deep connection between the audience and the musicians. The harmony created by the instruments is mesmerizing, and it seems to speak to something deeper within all of us. It’s a language that transcends any barriers and brings us together.

As I stand amidst a young, diverse crowd, I can’t help but feel a surge of hope. Tears of joy well up in my eyes. It dawns on me that all of us here are searching for our place in the world. And in music, there’s a profound sense of belonging and community. Throughout the turbulent times of Sophiatown and post-apartheid South Africa, we have always managed to gather together in celebration, fueled by the power of music. It is music that transcends the limitations set by society, reaching deep into our souls.

I’m standing on Lilian Ngoyi Street, just outside Niki’s Oasis Restaurant & Jazz Bar. It’s a place you should definitely check out if you’re a fan of jazz. The atmosphere here is electric, with the smooth sounds of saxophones and the rhythmic beats of drums filling the air.

Niki’s Oasis is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some excellent live jazz music. The performers here are incredibly talented, and they really know how to captivate an audience. You’ll find yourself swaying to the music and tapping your feet along with the rhythm.
