Spending a Night in Cape Town’s Grand Daddy Hotel Trailer

Imagine a love story that has captured the hearts of millions and left an indelible mark on rock history. It’s the tale of John Lennon, the 26-year-old Beatle, and Yoko Ono, the 33-year-old Japanese artist. Their paths crossed at an art exhibition in London in 1966, and their bond endured until tragedy struck in the 1980s with Lennon’s untimely death.

The couple is known for their iconic “bed-in for peace” during their honeymoon, a peaceful protest against war held in a hotel room. One photograph from their stay, taken on the last day of Lennon’s life, shows him vulnerable and naked, curled up beside Yoko. This powerful image graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, etching itself into the collective memory of many.

It comes as no surprise, then, that the Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town pays tribute to this legendary duo with a special trailer in their Airstream Rooftop Trailer Park. This whimsical accommodation transports visitors into a world where the spirit of John Lennon and Yoko Ono resides.

As I think back to the times I spent at the Sky Bar on the roof of the Grand Daddy Hotel, my curiosity about the trailers grew. These shiny, bullet-like marvels stood there silently, and I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like inside. Unfortunately, all my attempts to catch a glimpse were in vain. So, you can imagine my excitement when I finally got to unlock the door to my very own trailer for the night.

The interior turned out to be smaller than I had imagined, but it felt cozy. The familiar hotel white linen was neatly arranged, and there were even some sweets waiting for me on the pillow. But then, something caught my eye. It was a gorgeously decorated acoustic guitar, practically begging to be played. That’s when I noticed all the other thoughtful details. The LPs neatly stacked above the record player, and a garbage bin adorned with images of John and Yoko. These small touches added a touch of simplicity and serenity, just the way John and Yoko would have liked it.

When I entered the en-suite bathroom, I was greeted with a delightful surprise. The walls were adorned with black and white framed images, paying tribute to the iconic couple. But what caught my eye was the famous self-portrait etching of John Lennon on the mirror. It instantly transported me back to a different time, filled with the enchantment of The Beatles and epic love stories.

As I took a moment to soak in the nostalgia, my attention was drawn to an array of enticing potions on the shelf. The aromas wafted through the air, tempting me to explore their wonders. I couldn’t help but smile when I noticed a note, letting me know that I could purchase a larger bottle of any product at the reception if I found something I truly loved.

With curiosity piqued, I made a mental note to indulge in the hotel tradition of trying out all the products. After my little adventure, I would decide which ones captured my heart.

When I made plans to meet up with my friends for some drinks nearby, I thought about how nice it would be to hang out at the Sky Bar for a bit and then spend the rest of the night in my own little cocoon. Just imagine, being in that silver capsule, having a nice hot shower, and smelling amazing. I could relax and watch TV from under my comfy duvet, sipping on a cup of tea. Maybe I would have even indulged in a little “bed-in” if someone could serenade me with a beautiful guitar rendition of “Imagine”.

Discover the Grand Daddy Hotel

Located right in the heart of the lively and fashionable Long Street, the Grand Daddy Hotel is a luxurious and elegant destination to rest and relax. It has a touch of trendy coolness that makes it a hip spot for both a refreshing drink and a delightful dinner. One of the standout features of this hotel is its unique rooftop trailer park, where you can find seven airstream trailers. These trailers have become synonymous with the Grand Daddy Hotel and offer a one-of-a-kind accommodation experience.

But the rooftop doesn’t just offer trailers; it’s also home to the Sky Bar. This is where you can soak in the breathtaking views while enjoying a cool drink or attending exciting events and live performances. Here’s what you can expect

Every airstream trailer at this hotel is unique and has its own theme. The one I stayed in was called “The Ballad of John & Yoko.” It had a big bed, perfect for a bed-in, and it had a peaceful and calm atmosphere. The other trailers are also amazing – there’s a polka-dotted one called Dorothy, a 1950’s-style one named Pleasantville, and a trailer with a boudoir-style called Love and Lace. All seven trailers have everything you need, like facilities to make tea and coffee, a TV with lots of channels, and their own bathrooms.

What I really loved about it

I absolutely loved the guitar in my trailer. It was so cool that I think they should make mini replicas for people to buy as souvenirs! But what I loved the most was the whole concept of staying in a trailer on top of a hotel. It’s something really unique and different, and it’s just so much fun!

Here’s what you need to know:

I stayed at the Grand Daddy Hotel on a Monday night, so the bar area was really quiet. I know that the Sky Bar can get really busy on weekends, though, so this might not always be the case. If you want peace and quiet, I recommend staying there during the week. But if you’re the type who wants to party and have your bed just a few steps away, then you should definitely book the Ballad of John & Yoko. It’s the trailer that’s closest to the bar, and you can practically reach your drink from your door. How cool is that? It’s like being a rockstar!

Where to eat
When it comes to dining options, you’re in for a treat at this hotel. The room rate already includes a delicious breakfast that will fuel you up for the day. You’ll have a wide array of choices, from cereals and yogurt to a sumptuous continental-style buffet and a hearty English breakfast. But that’s not all – the hotel’s L’Apero restaurant also serves mouthwatering lunches and dinners, with daily specials that are sure to satisfy your cravings. And if the weather is nice, I highly recommend heading up to the rooftop and enjoying your meal with a view. Make sure to check out the two bars as well – the trendy Daddy Cool Bar and the famous Sky Bar. No matter where you choose to dine, you won’t have to go far, as most establishments are conveniently located within walking distance in the vibrant heart of Long Street.
