Have you heard the story of the turkeys causing chaos at Lanseria airport? It goes like this:
Once upon a time, all the turkeys gathered on the runway, making a lot of noise and getting in each other’s way. Among them was a young turkey who longingly looked up at the sky. The other turkeys laughed and mocked him, saying, “Why are you looking up? You can’t fly!”
The young turkey, undeterred, replied, “But I have wings! Doesn’t that mean I can fly?”
The other turkeys burst into laughter, feathers ruffling with disdain. The young turkey took a brief moment to gather himself and then turned his back on the group. With determination in his eyes, he faced the long, gray runway.
I took a few steps, not too fast, and then I started to go faster until my heavy body lifted off the ground. “Wow!” I shouted. “Look at me! I’m a bird!” The other turkeys stared up at me, their floppy necks shaking silently.
“You should try it too!” I called down to the young turkey from above. One by one, the other turkeys lined up and joined me in the sky. It was amazing. We soared and swooped, just like we were meant to. After a while, we landed back on the ground and started giving each other high-fives and congratulating ourselves.
But then, we turned around and walked away from the air strip.
Hey there! Welcome to Culamoya Chimes, where love and light fill the air. I’m here with Lola and Frik Haupt, an extraordinary couple who have a beautiful story to share.
Lola looks at me with bright eyes and asks a thought-provoking question, “Do you know what that story means?” As I ponder her words, she continues, “It means that each and every one of us has the power to do amazing things. But sometimes, we forget just how exceptional we truly are.” She takes a moment to gather her thoughts and then takes a deep breath, adding with a touch of wonder, “You see, we are human beings, and believe it or not, we can soar like birds!”
Lola and Frik Haupt, who have been happily married for an incredible 58 years, are a living testament to the enduring power of love. Lola was once a piano teacher, and as she fusses over Frik’s shirt, she tells me their remarkable journey.
“For the past 27 years, we’ve been creating chimes that bring joy and harmony into people’s lives,” Lola explains. “Our journey began by capturing the enchanting sounds of majestic churches, such as St Paul’s Cathedral and Winchester. But we didn’t stop there! We also discovered a way to capture the sounds of nature and even emotions. Here, listen to this one.” I lean in, my ears perked up, and I’m immediately swept away by the clear melody that resonates through the air. As I listen, the sound seems to linger, gently embracing my thoughts and bringing a sense of calmness to my mind.
‘This one is “Happiness”. We just want to spread happiness, love, understanding. That’s what we stand for,’ I say.
I quickly find out that the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is full of extraordinary individuals like us. People who are pursuing their own passions, hidden away in their own little worlds. Like Peter from Love Bread, who provides traditional stone-ground loaves to popular restaurants like The Bierfassl and Piggly Wiggly.
‘I started with an outdoor oven,’ he recalls with a fond chuckle. ‘I could only bake a dozen loaves before the fire went out. It was out in the open, exposed to the elements… and the Midlands can get pretty chilly. But now, I have this bakery.’ He looks around at the converted carport, where dough rests on floured surfaces and sunlight pours in through the window, casting a warm glow on the wooden racks.
If you’re looking for delicious, freshly baked artisan loaves, look no further than Peter’s creations. You can find his delectable bread at local markets, each loaf baked to perfection.
But what makes Peter’s bread truly special? According to him, the wood-fired oven is the magic ingredient. It’s not just any oven – there are no dials to rely on. You have to put your baking skills to the test and know exactly when the temperature is just right. It’s a skill that reminds him of the early days of baking, transporting him back in time.
When Peter works with the wood-fired oven, he feels a connection to the past and to the people who came before him. The smell of the bread rising and the warmth of the fire create an experience that goes beyond simply eating bread. It’s a sensory journey that takes you back to the origins of baking and a time when things were simpler.
As I sit with Peter in his bakery, I can’t help but notice how much he loves what he does and how, like many other locals in the Midlands, he is completely devoted to the process. This thought keeps my mind occupied as I casually observe the bubbles on my cappuccino art pop, one by one. Right now, I’m at Blueberry Café, perched high on a hill with arguably the best view of Cathkin Peak and Giant’s Castle. People can’t stop raving about their harvest breakfast, which includes a variety of fresh fruit juices, baked goods, eggs, and smoked bacon. Personally, I’m here for their famous blueberry cheesecake, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about some of the conversations I’ve overheard about the Meander in the past few days.
If you love cappuccino and cheesecake, you can’t miss out on Blueberry Café. It’s a place where you can indulge in these delicious treats.
The Midlands Meander is a road that’s meant to be taken slowly, allowing you to explore and discover new places. But lately, it seems like not many people are taking the time to truly enjoy the journey. I’ve been hearing a lot of people say that the route isn’t what it used to be.
There are a few factors that could be contributing to this change. Some blame it on the recession, while others think it’s because of high petrol prices. Then there are those who point fingers at big shopping centers like The Junction and Piggly Wiggly. They say that these places have turned the route into a series of convenient stores, taking away the charm of the Meander.
On the other hand, some argue that these one-stop shops actually provide opportunities for smaller artisans to showcase their creations. It’s a chance for them to reach a larger audience and make a name for themselves.
Regardless of the reasons, one thing is clear: the Midlands Meander is going through a transformation. It’s evolving and becoming more mature.
But you know, the one thing that never changes is the people. They’re the ones who’ve decided to leave behind the hustle and bustle of city life and pursue their passions – or as Lola would say, to reconnect with their inner greatness and reach for the stars.
Next time you’re driving on the R103, just strike up a conversation with the locals and ask them for recommendations. Trust me, once you start that conversation, you’ll uncover a whole world of fascinating individuals and boundless creativity, just like I did.
Hey there! I’m Kwanda, but you can call me ‘Wanda the Fish’. I always have a smile on my face as a barista at The Farmer’s Daughter.
