Ugh, I absolutely despise those early morning flights, the ones they call “red-eyes.” It’s like they don’t even come close to grasping just how much I detest them. Thank goodness that I’m headed to Maputo because it’s just an hour-long trip from Jozi these days. And let me tell you, as soon as you land in Mozambique’s capital, your day gets instantly better. The colonial buildings are so charming, the language has a smooth and exotic sound, and the food is flavorful and exciting.

It’s like Mozambique is saying “welcome” in a seductive way, almost like being on a picture-perfect Brazilian beach right here in Africa. Of course, Maputo has its challenges, but they’re not as bad as they seem. It’s all bark and no bite, really.

Listen up, here’s a tip: no matter how sweltering it may be, you definitely don’t want to be sticking your elbow outside the car window, and do yourself a favor and keep your luggage from piling up on the back seat. These seemingly innocent actions could end up lining the pockets of sneaky traffic cops who somehow manage to appear out of thin air behind every palm tree.

The water around me is alive with vibrant colors and movement. Schools of kingies swim past me, their silvery bodies glittering in the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing display. Everywhere I look, there are tropical fish of all shapes, sizes, and colors, each one more beautiful than the last.

As I explore, I encounter a variety of fascinating creatures. There are batfish, with their unique and curious faces. pipefish, with their slender bodies and graceful movements. Lion fish, with their striking and intricate patterns. The regal angelfish, with its majestic presence. And of course, the famous Nemo buggers, the striped little fish that always bring a smile to my face.

Each encounter fills me with a sense of wonder and awe. I feel like a kid in an amusement arcade, overwhelmed by the sheer abundance of life surrounding me. And then, out of nowhere, two giant trevally appear. They move with such speed and precision, like agro pit bulls, as they dart between the rocky pinnacles. It’s an exhilarating sight to behold, and I can’t help but gurgle with delight.

The underwater world is truly a magical place. It’s a world that takes my breath away and fills me with a sense of joy and wonder. Every dive is an adventure, a chance to explore and discover something new. It’s incredible how a tropical storm can sweep over the peninsula. I’ll never forget that day, when I had the chance to float in the warm 27-degree Celsius water. But let me tell you, an exciting adventure awaited me. The bird-watching in this area is truly amazing. There are so many different types of birds to see – from waders to forest birds to pelagic species.

Now, normally, early mornings are the best time for bird-watching. But my afternoon expedition into the sand forest turned out to be a big success. I saw some incredible birds within the first hour – a Knysna turaco, a slender bulbul, an eastern nicator, and even a bearded scrub robin. And as if that wasn’t enough, I also encountered a spotted bush snake!

The underwater world is just as mesmerizing. I get so excited, like a kid walking into an amusement arcade for the first time. There are so many fascinating fish to see – batfish, pipefish, lionfish, regal angelfish, parrotfish, and those adorable little Nemo buggers with their stripes.

After a delightful evening swim and deliciously spicy peri-peri chicken kebabs, I decide to spend a few hours capturing the mesmerizing beauty of star trails through my camera lens. But before I call it a night, I must keep an eye out for some of the unique creatures that roam this area, like the elusive spotted genet, the majestic Verreaux’s eagle owl, and even the mighty African rock python. As I finally drift off to sleep, I’m serenaded by the distant calls of fiery-necked nightjars and the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore.

But boy, did I get a surprise when I woke up! So here’s the deal: my pal, Mike, and I wanted to head over to Santa Maria at the crack of dawn to sort out this awesome dhow trip. I creep out of my chalet and grab my board shorts from the deck where they were drying. No biggie, right? Little did I know that this innocent act would turn into a crazy adventure.

As I slide into my shorts and make my way to the bathroom to brush my teeth, something doesn’t feel quite right. I mean, it starts off as a tiny prickly sensation, like a thorn. But then, out of nowhere, it feels like I’ve sat on a burning coal! And let me tell you, there’s no graceful way to handle that. I end up doing this weird mid-air flip while trying to yank off the shorts, like some kind of acrobat.

Well, it turns out that the culprit was a little scorpion – about five centimeters long. Luckily, it wasn’t the venomous kind. Phew! After slapping on some Tiger Balm to soothe the burn in my nether regions (which, by the way, did absolutely nothing for my bruised ego since the whole incident was soon the talk of the town), I was back in action.

I can’t believe it, but here I am with Mike, heading off to Santa Maria. We wake up early and watch the sun rise over the old, creaky pier. It’s a beautiful sight, knowing that the dhows are unloading goods that were brought all the way from Maputo. The village square is buzzing with activity, and the sweet smell of fresh bread fills the air as it bakes in an old clay oven.

We take our time and leisurely walk around, taking in the slow pace of life in this charming town. It’s amazing how calming it is to just be immersed in the simplicity of it all.

After a while, we head for breakfast and then spend some time exploring the rocks and pools along the shore. There’s something so captivating about finding hidden treasures among the seaweed and shells.

Next, we try our luck at fishing for cuta. It’s a thrilling activity that adds a little excitement to our day. And of course, we can’t resist taking a break in the mid-morning to relax under the shade of the thatched beach umbrellas.

Life doesn’t get much better than this. But if you’re looking for a little more adventure, this place has got it in spades.

When the guests at the lodge get ready to go on a sand-bar picnic and a dhow sail, I decide to hop into a sea kayak and paddle across the bay. The tide is flowing in through Hell’s Gate, there’s not even a hint of wind, and I feel like I’m floating in a dreamy shade of aquamarine. It takes about 45 minutes to make my way to the mangrove channels at the far end of the bay, and as the tide rises, I find myself drifting into these lush green swamps.

A ruckus of squawks, caws, and reedy whistles fills the air as I smoothly slide through the emerald walls of vegetation that rise up from the rippling tidal stream. Cormorants shoot off like feathered rockets at the sight of me, while herons with their gray and green feathers elongate their elegant necks for a better look.

Wow, what a sight! Egrets are soaring up into the sky, twirling like delicate snowflakes caught in the breeze. And look over there – a pied kingfisher swooping down into the shallows amidst this avian chaos. The setting sun paints the horizon with a warm orange glow as I continue along the path. Suddenly, I come around a bend and discover a group of greater flamingos, their vibrant pink feathers shining in the light, moving with graceful steps reminiscent of flamenco dancers.

As I approach, these magnificent birds spread their wings and take flight, creating a stunning picture against the fiery sky. It’s as if they are bidding farewell to this almost perfect day in Africa. “Muito obrigado, Mozambique, vou voltar” – I whisper to the land, expressing my gratitude for the beautiful experience. Yes, there’s no doubt in my mind, I will be back here again.

The good news is that southern Mozambique is not affected by tropical weather throughout the year. So, there’s no need to worry about cyclones or other natural disasters. That makes Machangulo a great destination any time of the year. If you want to escape the South African winter, it’s an ideal choice. But there are also a few natural events that you might want to consider when planning your trip. For example, from June to November, you can witness the annual whale migration. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight that you don’t want to miss. And if you visit from December to March, you’ll have the chance to see the turtles hatch. Get Ready for Adventure in Machangulo

1. Dive into Snorkeling

Discover the mesmerizing underwater world of the Inhaca Island marine reserve. At Machangulo Beach Lodge, you can easily access the reserve by kayak or take a boat transfer. Alternatively, you can arrange day tours from Maputo through Dana Tours and explore this marine paradise.

Embark on a thrilling birdwatching experience around the peninsula. Machangulo offers incredible sightings of various bird species, including waders and pelagic birds. Here, you may have the chance to spot the elusive albatross, soft-plumaged petrel, broad-billed prion, flesh-footed shearwater, red-tailed tropicbird, black-crowned night heron, woolly-necked stork, osprey, Amur falcon, greenshank, and bar-tailed godwit all in one day!

3. Sail Away on a Dhow

You have two options to arrange a cruise in Santa Maria: speaking to dhow captains at the harbor or booking a dhow from Machangulo Beach Lodge. If you choose the latter, you can also plan a sand-bar picnic on a private sandspit at low tide. It costs R245 per person, excluding the picnic.

At the lodge, you can also go kayaking in the bay. They provide boats and equipment for free.

If you’re into fishing, there are plenty of options available like rock angling, salt-water fly fishing, deep-sea fishing, and spinning. Most places offer rods for hire. The prices for fishing start at R1227 per hour for a maximum of six people, including drinks, snacks, and fuel.

Another activity you can do is visiting the Maputo Special Reserve.

If you want to visit Machangulo, you have a few options for getting there. One way is to take a 4×4 vehicle and navigate the sandy tracks that lead to the Maputo Special Reserve, which borders Machangulo. This is a unique adventure in itself, and having a 4×4 is a must for this type of terrain. Another option is to drive on the road known as the 201, which will take you about four hours from Kosi Bay or five hours from Komatipoort.

Driving from Maputo is also possible, but it will take you a minimum of six to seven hours. This route takes you through the reserve, so you’ll get to see some exciting wildlife along the way. Keep in mind that the reserve is constantly changing, so the sand tracks may be different each time you visit.

Regardless of how you choose to get to Machangulo, one thing is for sure – the journey will be an adventure in itself. So pack your bags, hop in your vehicle, and get ready for an unforgettable trip to this beautiful destination.

When you explore the reserve, you might come across some unique and fascinating animals. While they can be a bit shy and hard to spot, keep your eyes peeled for hippos, reedbucks, zebras, giraffes, kudus, duikers, bush pigs, and crocodiles. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a leopard, serval, honey badger, or porcupine!

Just remember, there are also elephants in the reserve. They’re incredible creatures, but be cautious, as they can be easily provoked. It’s best to admire them from a safe distance.

And don’t forget about the birds! With approximately 350 different species, you’re sure to be amazed by the variety and beauty of the avian life here.

When you visit Machangulo, it’s important to remember that the park lacks basic amenities and services, and the cell phone signal is weak or non-existent. But don’t worry! You can still have a great time if you come prepared.

One thing you can do is hire local people to help you with various camping tasks. They can assist you in setting up your tent, washing your dishes, and even gathering firewood and water. It’s not only allowed but encouraged to support the local community this way. By doing so, you’ll not only have an easier time but also contribute to the livelihood of the people who call this place home.

While there is currently a beach lodge being built at Ponta Chemucane, also known as Anvil Bay, it’s important to note that it is not yet finished.

What to eat in Machangulo

When you visit this ex-Portuguese colony, be prepared for some bold flavors in their seafood and chicken dishes. The secret ingredient is peri-peri, a spicy chili that adds a fiery kick to everything. Even the smallest village takes pride in baking fresh bread. If you arrive early, you might be lucky enough to taste some delicious pão, the Mozambican version of Portuguese rolls – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

They offer self-catering accommodation starting at R1400 per person.

Hey there, let me tell you about Ponta Milibangalala – it’s the only place to stay in the Maputo Special Reserve. You should know that it’s a pretty simple accommodation, nothing fancy, just a pit latrine and a water well. Keep in mind though, the water is not safe to drink.

If you’re thinking of camping, it’ll cost you R200 a day. And don’t forget, to enter the reserve, you’ll have to pay R140 per person, R140 per vehicle, and R140 per trailer. This entry fee is good for 48 hours. But here’s the catch, if you leave the park after 48 hours, you’ll have to pay the same amount all over again when you exit.
