As I cruise down the gravel roads in De Hoop Nature Reserve, the bontebok catch my eye with their lazy grazing. And in a magical moment, I lock eyes with one of them. They seem so calm and peaceful, and it’s no surprise why. You see, things haven’t always been this way for them.

Back in the 1800s, the bontebok, a type of blesbok, were hunted mercilessly. Their numbers dwindled to a shocking low of just 17 individuals. But thanks to the efforts in the De Hoop Nature Reserve near Bredasdorp, the bontebok population has made a remarkable comeback. Now, there are about 308 of these vibrant antelopes roaming the reserve, a true glimmer of hope for a species that was on the brink of extinction.
