A new perspective on our beloved journey
Hey there! Let’s dive into the exciting world of taking a walk. Have you ever thought about how something as simple as a stroll can have such a big impact on our lives? Well, strap on your walking shoes and let’s explore the hidden wonders of going for a walk!
First off, let’s talk about why taking a walk is so important. Walking is not just a means of transportation; it’s a way to connect with nature and discover the beauty that surrounds us. When I go for a walk, I feel like I’m stepping into a whole new world, filled with vibrant colors, fresh scents, and the sweet songs of birds.
But walking isn’t just about observing the world around us; it also has a profound effect on our physical and mental well-being. Walking gets my heart pumping, my blood flowing, and my muscles working. It’s a fantastic way to stay active and keep my body healthy.
And the benefits don’t stop there! Walking has a magical way of clearing my mind and helping me de-stress. When I’m feeling overwhelmed or stuck, I know that a leisurely walk can provide me with the mental clarity I need. I find that ideas flow more freely, and problems become more manageable after a good walk.
Now, let’s talk about the different types of walks you can take. Are you looking to explore the great outdoors? A hike through the woods or a stroll along the beach might be just what you need. If you prefer something more urban, why not take a walk through your local park or explore the vibrant streets of your city? No matter where you go, there’s always something new to discover and experience.
When it comes to going for a walk, it’s essential to be prepared and keep a few things in mind. First, make sure you have comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. You don’t want blisters or a case of the sniffles ruining your walk! Second, don’t forget to bring some water and a snack to keep you fueled and hydrated. Lastly, remember to take it at your own pace. Walking is not a race; it’s a chance to enjoy the journey.
So, the next time you find yourself itching for an adventure, why not lace up your shoes and go for a walk? You never know what wonders you might discover or what dreams might come alive along the way. Happy walking!

I still vividly remember a particular morning from the early 1990s. It’s a memory that has stayed with me all these years, unchanged. It happened on my mom’s birthday, April 1, as we drove along the winding R103 in our yellow station wagon. I was 14 years old, wearing a Madonna T-shirt, and leaning out of the window, savoring the cool autumn air. The feeling of exhilaration overwhelmed me, as if I were in a dream. Two things contributed to that feeling: first, we were tuned in to Capital 604, and the DJ had just announced that Vanilla Ice was coming to Durban. And second, we were embarking on a journey along the Meander.
The KZN Midlands is a place where you don’t have to stray far from the network of roads to find tranquility. At Copperleigh Trout Cottage, for example, you can explore the beauty of the surrounding sheep farm and the well-stocked Mavela Dam through a series of delightful short walks.
So, here’s the thing about the KZN Midlands: it’s like a secret network of awesome. Picture this: a whole bunch of roads in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, filled with arts and crafts outlets, delicious food spots, cozy lodges, and, get this, historic landmarks. It’s like a treasure hunt for fun and inspiration.
I gotta tell you, that feeling of anticipation hits you right from the start. It’s like waking up on Christmas morning and knowing there’s something amazing waiting for you. As I cruise down the Midlands roads, I can’t help but feel that excitement building up inside me. I just know that around the next bend, there’s gonna be something cool to check out, something that will ignite my creative spark.
And let me tell you, it’s been thirty years, but driving along the R103 still gives me that same electric feeling. It’s like time stands still, and all that matters is the adventure ahead. So buckle up and get ready, because the KZN Midlands is waiting for you.
When I think of the Cottages at Ashton Wold, I imagine myself in a serene and tucked-away place, surrounded by two beautiful dams. It’s a peaceful location, nestled in Curry’s Post, a quiet part of town.
Now let me tell you about one of the things that has made Curry’s Post famous in recent years – Groundcover. Groundcover has been around for more than 30 years and is known throughout the Midlands. They specialize in hand-crafted leather shoes and have a charming old iron house in Curry’s Post where they sell their products. And guess what? Groundcover has a new neighbor now – the Barn Owl country café.
The Barn Owl has quickly gained a reputation for its superb coffee, breathtaking view of the valley, and mouthwatering food. Families love coming here because kids can enjoy themselves in the playground while their parents relax. You can visit the Barn Owl any day between 9am and 4pm. Make sure to note down their number, just in case you have any questions: 072 714 6870. You can also find more information on their website at thebarnowl.co.za.
When you find yourself craving a delicious meal and a breathtaking view, look no further than The Barn Owl. Not only does this lovely establishment serve scrumptious meals, but it also offers an unforgettable experience.
A Unique Café Experience: The Platform and VT Coffee Café
If you happen to be driving through Lions River, you’ll come across The Platform, conveniently located right alongside the R103. This charming old shed-like station has been transformed into an art gallery that showcases the incredible talent of artists from the Midlands. But The Platform has more to offer than just art. Adjacent to the gallery, you’ll find a one-of-a-kind café experience. The newly opened VT Coffee Café and The Local eatery are housed in containers, with a deck built on top.
Here, you can treat yourself to a delicious cup of coffee or a tasty bunny chow while enjoying the magnificent views and even waving at passing trains. It’s a unique experience you won’t want to miss.
The café is open every day from 9am to 4.30pm, so you can stop by whenever you please. For more information, you can reach them at 084 999 2223 or visit their Facebook page at facebook.com/theplatformlionsriver.
When I first laid eyes on it, I couldn’t help but be captivated by The Platform at the old Lions River Station. It’s a place that exudes charm and character, both inside and out. Inside, it’s not just any ordinary place; it’s a treasure trove of local art that awaits to be discovered.
Let me tell you about another hidden gem called Ashton Wold. Tucked away in the scenic Curry’s Post area, this place offers breathtaking views of the surrounding farmlands in Karkloof. It’s a serene setting where four stone and thatch cottages proudly stand, overlooking two small dams. Over the past three years, these cottages have undergone restoration, and they now serve as a refuge for those seeking a temporary escape from the chaos of the outside world (just be warned, the phone signal here is a bit unreliable).
At Ashton Wold, you can indulge in a variety of activities. If you’re an adventurous soul, you can hop on your bike and explore the forest trails nearby. For those who prefer a more laid-back experience, fishing for bass in the dams is a perfect way to unwind. And if you’re itching to see what the Midlands has in store, you can easily venture out and explore all the wonders it has to offer.
The cottages at Ashton Wold can accommodate anywhere from four to six people, making it an ideal place for families or a group of friends. The rates start at R750 per person per night, based on sharing.

Welcome to Taste Buds Farm Stall!
For over a decade, people in the Midlands have known that no one makes pizzas like Post Postino. But during Lockdown, we gained a new neighbor in the form of Taste Buds Farm Stall. And let me tell you, it’s become a local favorite for those who love to support their community.
Taste Buds is filled to the brim with fresh goodies. Their bakery is always stocked with delicious treats, and they offer a range of locally grown and made products. From cheeses, honeys, and jams to beautiful flowers and fresh veggies, they’ve got it all. You can even find pickles, pies, pork, and grass-fed lamb. Imagine standing near Copperleigh Trout Cottages and Mavela Dam, looking up at the iNhlosane brooding over the landscape. It’s a breathtaking sight.
Have you ever heard of the Nelson Mandela Capture Site? It’s an incredible place with a unique sculpture of Nelson Mandela. This sculpture was erected many years ago, but it wasn’t until just one month before Lockdown that the visitor center opened to the public.
Inside the museum, you’ll find an amazing display that takes you on a journey through history. It starts with the Bhambatha Rebellion and follows the story of apartheid, the struggle for freedom, and the extraordinary life of Nelson Mandela. You’ll also learn about other courageous freedom fighters. Trust me, the exhibits are truly remarkable.
If you’re planning a visit, keep in mind that the museum is open every day from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The admission fees are reasonable: R100 for adults, R60 for seniors, R30 for young adults aged 12 to 18, and free for children under 12.
So, why not take a trip to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site? It’s a place that will leave you in awe, and you’ll come away with a greater understanding of our history and the struggle for freedom. You know what would make for a great day? Ordering a coffee from River Café and then walking onto the ‘island’ in the river for a picnic.
River Cafe
River Cafe is a charming little spot that opened in April. They’ve set up shop in a cute railway building that was moved next to the Lions River. It’s such a delightful setting, with the river flowing just a few meters from the veranda. You can choose to sit at one of the tables they’ve set up here, or you can grab your coffee or picnic box (which River Cafe would be happy to prepare for you) and head over to the lush grass beside the river.
The cafe is open on Mondays and from Wednesdays to Fridays, from 9am to 4pm. On weekends, they open bright and early at 7am and close at 4pm.
You can contact them at 061 290 7531, or visit their Facebook page at facebook.com/rivercafemidlands.
