The Best B&B: Holland House
Ranked as the 20th best B&B in the world on TripAdvisor out of 295 B&Bs/Inns.
‘When my family downsized, I went in the opposite direction!’ jokes Kim Tomlinson when I ask how she filled her stunning Cape-Dutch gabled home with antiques and an assortment of vintage treasures. Kim is a passionate collector who decorates with lavishness – her style is more akin to a five-star boutique hotel than a bed and breakfast. Another luxury is the abundant space; this sprawling home offers multiple areas for relaxation. Whether it’s the cozy outdoor lounge overlooking the pool (ideal for snuggling up with a good book) or the rooftop garden, an ideal spot for sundowners with a view of the city. You can enjoy an honesty bar and have access to the kitchen or braai facilities. Feather pillows are available, and the staff can arrange specialized walking tours, as well as recommending and making restaurant bookings for you. Despite the opulence, the true essence of Holland House lies in making it your very own home, as long as you don’t mind the delightful company of Kim’s three friendly dogs. The atmosphere here is tranquil and serene, with the vibrant Florida Road just a quick five-minute walk away.
My Favorite Room The room that I absolutely love is Suite 7, which happens to be Kim’s latest creation. If you prefer a room on the upper floor, go for Suite 3 or Suite 1. Suite 2, however, is located near the breakfast room, so it might not be the best choice for those who enjoy sleeping in.
How Much Does It Cost? You’ll be glad to know that the price starts at R600 per person for bed and breakfast.
2. The Best Hotel by the Sea
Belaire Suites
Ranked Number 11 out of 52 Hotels on TripAdvisor
I have discovered an incredible four-star hotel that I believe you will absolutely love. It’s known as the classier sister to the nearby Blue Waters hotel and is conveniently located at the highly sought-after northern end of the Golden Mile. This hotel may not have a pool, but don’t worry because it is situated right across from two amazing swimming spots – Battery and North beaches – where lifeguards are always on duty.
Now, let’s talk about the hotel itself. At first glance, the exterior may not seem too impressive, but trust me, the interior is where the magic happens. Especially if you book one of their newly renovated deluxe rooms. These rooms offer the best deal on the beachfront, with modern and stylish furnishings, a spacious bathroom that even has a tub and a separate shower – a rarity for a beachfront hotel built in the 70s. Plus, every room comes with a kitchenette equipped with basic tools like a fridge, microwave, kettle, and toaster. This allows you to have more flexible catering options compared to a standard hotel.
But it doesn’t end there. The public spaces in this hotel are also pretty cool. They have a fantastic in-house restaurant called Jiran, which has a stylish and cosy sidewalk-style café-bistro vibe. And if you’re a fan of great views, then you must visit the Sky Lounge on the 11th floor. It offers breathtaking breakfast views that will make every morning an unforgettable experience.
So, why wait? If you’re looking for a beachfront hotel with a touch of class and convenience, then look no further. Book your stay at this four-star gem and get ready for an amazing beach getaway.
Hot Tip: If you’re looking for the best room, go for the deluxe ones. They have been recently renovated, unlike the other room categories which are starting to look a bit worn out. Keep in mind that each floor only has two deluxe rooms, and the ones ending with ‘2’ offer a beautiful sea view. With 10 floors to choose from, the top picks would be room 1002, followed by 902, and so on.
Pricing: For bed and breakfast, the cost starts at R602 per person sharing. If you want to enjoy a more luxurious stay, consider the deluxe rooms, which start at R777 per person sharing.
3. Best Backpackers
Experience Curiocity Durban:
Ranked No. 3 of 113 Speciality Lodgings on TripAdvisor
Curiocity Durban is a place that’s got it all – no matter what you call it – lit, cool, sick, kiff. Located on the first floor of a historic building in downtown Durbs, it offers an authentic peek into the edgier, urban side of the city. The walls and breezeblocks are painted in fresh white and light greys, creating a modern and clean ambiance. The decor style is a fusion of Scandinavian and African influences, with vibrant green plants adding a touch of the tropics. The space is flooded with natural light, thanks to a central open-air courtyard and expansive arched windows with doors that open onto charming balconies. The staff at Curiocity are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all the best things to see and do in Durban, whether it’s going on pub crawls, food tours, surfing lessons, or even shark-cage diving. The hostel also organizes in-house activities like movie nights on Mondays, taco Tuesdays, braai Wednesdays, and yoga sessions almost every day. The hostel attracts a diverse group of travelers from around the world, as well as adventurous South Africans eager to immerse themselves in the city. And the best part? It’s affordable enough to stay for as long as you need to truly experience Durban in all its glory.
Room Tip: If you want the best of the best, go for Room 20. It’s the only en-suite private double room, which means you get your own bathroom. It’s big and stylish, and though it may be a bit pricier at R495 per person sharing, it’s still a great deal. But if Room 20 isn’t available, I suggest booking a private room with a balcony and shared ablutions. Some of these rooms have a double bed and a single bed, so you’ll have options.
Cost: If you’re on a budget, you can get a dorm bed for just R220. The dorms can sleep anywhere from four to eight people. If you prefer more privacy, you can book a private room starting at R345 per person sharing.
4. Best Historic Property:
St Anne’s Guest House – TripAdvisor No. 69 of 295 B&Bs/Inns
This stunning Victorian mansion located in Musgrave was constructed in 1886 by the Butcher family on a spacious two-hectare plot on the highest point of the Berea ridge. Over the years, the property changed hands, and the grounds were reduced in size. However, the original buildings remained largely untouched, preserving their historic charm and grandeur.
As soon as you step inside, you are greeted by a majestic entrance with an enormous front door that opens up to reveal exquisite imported Minton tiles, beautifully crafted stained-glass windows, lofty high ceilings, expansive wraparound verandas, elegant tall sash windows, and a grand staircase that exudes sophistication and grace.
In 2008, St. Anne’s was acquired by Leal and Caroline Wright, who have lovingly restored this grand dame to its former glory. Caroline, a highly regarded interior decorator, skillfully adorned the mansion in a tasteful palette of white, grey, and taupe. The interiors feature luxurious white upholstered sofas, carefully selected antiques, stunning flower arrangements, captivating artworks, and shelves filled with captivating books.
Surrounding the mansion is a delightful garden filled with lush palm trees, creating a picturesque backdrop. From the top floor, you can even catch a glimpse of the sea in the distance, adding to the enchantment of the setting.
During your stay at St. Anne’s, you will have the entire house to yourself, as the Wrights reside in a separate wing. However, they provide personalized service to ensure your needs are met. They are happy to assist with making restaurant bookings, and the popular Café 1999 is just a short four-minute walk away, offering a fantastic dining option.
Tip for Your Room
For a spectacular view, why not choose one of the rooms on the upper floor? Gora, Ganesh, or Mahal are all excellent options. If you go for Mahal, you’ll get the added bonus of a spacious meal preparation area and an additional room with two single beds. This is perfect if you’re traveling with children.
Cost
The cost is R550 per person when sharing a room and enjoying bed and breakfast. If you’d like to upgrade to a two-room suite, the price is R1,450 and also includes breakfast.
5. The Finest Hotel on Florida Road
The Benjamin
Ranked 2nd out of the 52 hotels on TripAdvisor
On Florida Road in Morningside, the heart of the city’s dining and nightlife scene, there are many places to stay. However, none compare to the exceptional experience you’ll find at The Benjamin. This charming establishment offers 41 rooms, giving it the cozy feel of a guest house while still providing the amenities you’d expect from a small hotel. The owners have done a marvelous job preserving the unique character of the two neighboring double-story houses, complete with inviting staircases and spacious verandas shaded by deep eaves.
Each room at The Benjamin is a delightful surprise, with its own distinctive style. However, they all share a captivating elegance, featuring lovely bedside lamps, stylish accent cushions, and special touches like Juliet balconies, veranda access, small private gardens, or a view of the central pool area. With complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and a convenient desk in every room, you’ll find that The Benjamin is perfect for solo business travelers. And with an array of dining options right outside your door, you’ll have no shortage of choices when it comes to satisfying your culinary cravings.
Yet, what sets The Benjamin apart isn’t just its facilities. It’s the warm, welcoming spirit that permeates every corner of this remarkable place. From the moment you arrive and are greeted with a refreshing “welcome home” drink, you’ll feel like part of the family. This personal touch is what has earned The Benjamin its loyal following, and it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
Room Tip: If you’re looking for a room in the Florida Road area, it’s important to take into account that it can get quite noisy on weekend nights. To avoid the hustle and bustle, I recommend requesting a room at the back of the hotel. Personally, I prefer the rooms with Juliet balconies because they overlook the tranquil central pool courtyard.
Cost: For a cozy and comfortable stay, the price is R950 per person sharing, including a delicious breakfast.
Contact: To make a reservation or get more information, you can reach out to the friendly staff at 031-303-4233 or visit their website at benjamin.co.za.
6. Best Boutique Guest House
Goble Palms: Ranked at an impressive No. 5 on TripAdvisor’s list of 295 B&Bs/Inns, Goble Palms is the epitome of boutique luxury. Prepare to be awed by their exceptional service, stylish decor, and overall inviting ambiance.
If you find B&Bs a bit too cozy but don’t like the impersonal nature of hotels, then this Morningside guest lodge and urban retreat is just right for you. I, Leanne Gafney, along with my managers Goodman and Vincent Ndlovu, opened this place in 2000 with just two rooms. Today, we oversee three connected properties in Morningside, including two beautiful Edwardian homes from the early 1900s. I’ve seamlessly integrated them all into a wonderful 20-room retreat. The interior design is in the style of English countryside, and each room has its own unique size and decor. Of course, all the modern comforts like air conditioning, TV, Wi-Fi, and tea/coffee-making facilities are available. We have many inviting guest lounges, a refreshing pool, and even an English-style pub with an honesty bar. Enjoy your breakfast on our spacious verandas, which offer stunning views. The best part? There’s an incredible Indian restaurant called Mali’s just a block away. At this Morningside retreat, you’ll experience lovely views, competitive rates, and a personalized yet unobtrusive service. Come and discover why we’re the perfect blend of comfort and character.
Looking for the perfect room? I’ve got a tip for you! If you’re traveling solo and want a cozy atmosphere, Room 8 is the way to go. It’s a small room that’s perfect for one person. The best part? It has a great ambiance that will make you feel right at home.
If you’re looking to add a touch of romance to your stay and cost isn’t an issue, Room 20 is the one for you. This room has it all – a jacuzzi on a private balcony with stunning views of the city lights and the ocean. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic getaway.
Now, let’s talk about the cost. If you’re sharing a room with someone else, you can book a room for only R675 per person, including breakfast. If you prefer some privacy, you can book a single room for R995, also including breakfast.
Are you traveling with your family and looking for the best hotel? Look no further than Tsogo Sun. According to TripAdvisor, it’s ranked as the number 1, 3, and 4 hotels out of 52. It’s the perfect choice for young families.
When it comes to Durban’s beachfront scene, Tsogo Sun dominates with its collection of five stylish hotels (and even nine if you count Umhlanga). You have two top-notch options: the charmingly retro SunSquare Suncoast Hotel & Towers and the highly rated Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani, with the latter being the best hotel along the Golden Mile, according to TripAdvisor. I recommend booking a room at Maharani for its serene atmosphere and stunning sea views, and take advantage of the superior pool facilities at Elangeni, which is just next door (although there is an apartment block in between). If you’re looking for a more affordable option, you can consider Garden Court South Beach, the fourth-ranked hotel on TripAdvisor. However, if you want to get the best prices, I highly recommend signing up for the Tsogo Sun rewards programme – you’ll be able to enjoy even more discounted rates. Oh, and if you happen to visit during the rainy season, don’t worry! Garden Court Marine Parade has a fantastic rooftop pool that’s completely enclosed, so you can still enjoy a swim even on gloomy days.
Room Tip If you’re looking for a great entry-level room, the standard rooms in these hotels are perfect. Make sure to specify non-smoking and inquire about a renovated bathroom – many still have showers over tubs, which can be annoying. The ‘standard room double bed’ option is an excellent value if your children are willing to share a bed.
Cost You can stay at the Garden Court South Beach for as low as R615.50 per person when sharing a room, or R1,511 for a twin double. For a small additional fee of about R250 per night, you can enjoy the Garden Court Marine Parade. At Elangeni & Maharani, rates start at R1,007.50 per person or R2,410 for a twin double. All rates include breakfast.
Contact If you have any questions or want to make a reservation, you can reach the hotels at 011-461-9744 or visit their website at tsogosun.com.
