Lagos, a bustling African megacity with a population of approximately 10 million people, is a multifaceted city that caters to a wide range of interests. From its flashy and extravagant side to its more approachable and grounded characteristics, Lagos has something to offer everyone. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the vibrant energy and excitement of the city, these are the neighborhoods you should explore.
I’ve noticed that the heart of the City of Gold has become much friendlier lately. If you want to have the best local experience, I recommend staying in a neighborhood that’s close to the CBD.
So, you might be wondering, how can we trust the rankings on TripAdvisor? While guest reviews are valuable, they don’t give us a clear comparison. How do we know if the top-ranked accommodation is truly the best? Pippa de Bruyn, a seasoned reviewer who has worked with esteemed publications like Frommer’s and The Telegraph for 20 years, taps into TripAdvisor and other online platforms for her destination research. When exploring Johannesburg, she created a list of 21 places to visit, carefully inspecting each one. Out of all the options, the following ones stood out.
Here’s what I discovered about the accommodation:
To really get a taste of Jozi, you gotta live like a local and hang out with the people who truly love this city. The main attraction here is the lively culture of its residents. So for my Final Cut, I decided to skip the hotels and focus on Airbnb, along with a few cool backpackers and guest houses in awesome neighborhoods.
I wanted to find places in interesting areas, not necessarily pretty but with architecture that tells a story. I marked out a rough circle close to the heart of the city, making sure not to go too far beyond Saxonwold in the east, Parkhurst in the north, Maboneng in the south, and Brixton in the west.
When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay, there are a few important things to consider. First and foremost, I believe it’s crucial to have a cozy and secure space with a private entrance. That way, you can feel comfortable and have peace of mind during your stay. It’s also a bonus if there’s an on-site host who can provide assistance if needed.
While searching for accommodations, I noticed that Airbnb can be a bit tricky, especially if you’re traveling with a large group or family. Most of the options I found were one-bedroom units or studios, which may not be ideal for bigger groups. However, I did come across a couple of great two-bedroom options for those who need a bit more space.
When it comes to pricing, it’s essential to be aware of the potential additional costs. Many hosts in Johannesburg quote a single rate but then add an extra charge for your traveling companion, even if you’re sharing a bed. On top of that, there is often a service and cleaning fee added to the Airbnb rates. So, it’s important to take these factors into account when budgeting for your trip.
1. Best guest house
If you’re looking for a fantastic guest house in Johannesburg, I highly recommend Pablo House. It has received great reviews and is ranked number 21 out of 348 B&Bs/Inns on TripAdvisor.
Check out Pablo House if you’re looking for a unique place to stay while feeling right at home. The owners, Leigh and Louis Roux, have created a relaxed atmosphere with a cool vibe. It’s the perfect mix of self-catering and great service. You’ll always find someone around to make you a delicious coffee or pour you a drink.
One of the best parts about Pablo House is the incredible view. Situated on the highest point in Melville, you’ll have a breathtaking vista of the Melville Koppies all the way to Sandton. It’s truly a sight to behold.
The interiors of Pablo House are just as impressive. Leigh and Louis have decorated the seven rooms with funky art and stylish furniture. You’ll have everything you need, from a smart TV with Netflix to a Nespresso machine.
In addition to running the in-house restaurant, Louis is also a talented musician. He plays bass guitar in a band and has recently finished building a swimming pool on the property. So, whether you’re in the mood for a delicious meal or a refreshing dip, Pablo House has you covered.
In case you’re wondering about the best room to choose, here’s a tip – most of our suites offer breathtaking views right from the comfort of your bed, with the exception of suites 3, 6, and 7. Suite 6 is even more special, as it boasts its own private patio.
Now, let’s talk about the cost. For just R700 per person, you can enjoy a cozy stay with us, including a delicious breakfast at Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar, located just a short walk away. We’ll even provide you with a breakfast voucher to use there.
2. The Finest in Maboneng
Image: Jotham Van Tonder
Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome apartment that I found. It’s not on Tripadvisor, but trust me, it’s one of the best places you can stay in the whole city. The neighborhood it’s in was voted as one of the coolest in the world by Forbes. How cool is that?
I absolutely love Fox Street, especially in the evenings. The way the sunset hits the trees and the buildings is just magical. And after a long day of work, a trendy crowd gathers in the area to unwind. There are so many great bars and restaurants to try. But if you feel like staying in, no problem! This apartment has everything you need to cook up a delicious meal.
The apartment itself is amazing. It has that New York-loft style that’s always so popular. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are all open and spacious. Natural light floods in through the big windows, and you can even slide open the doors to a small deck and enjoy the view of the city, including the famous Ponte and Hillbrow towers. I can just imagine hosting a party here, but it’s also cozy enough for a couple.
When it’s time to bed down, there are two en-suite bedrooms located at the back of the apartment, away from any noise on the street. So you can sleep peacefully and wake up refreshed.
If Johannesburg is Africa’s ‘Big Apple,’ then this apartment is like taking a bite out of the city. It’s the perfect place to experience all the energy and excitement that Jozi has to offer. Don’t miss out!
The cost for a night’s stay at #280Fox is R2,159, which can accommodate up to four people.
If you are interested, you can contact them at 0832879997 or visit their website at airbnb.com.
Alternatively, you can consider Curiocity, a trendy backpackers located on Fox Street. They offer studio flats in the 12 Decades Art Hotel block starting from R800. While not as luxurious as #280Fox, the prices are more affordable. The hotel rooms at Curiocity cost R908.50 per night. You can find more information on their website at curiocity.africa.
3. Best in Parkhurst: ‘Perfect Base’
Now, let me tell you about the best option in Parkhurst.

Not on Tripadvisor
There’s something really satisfying about walking down a street filled with cafes and bars. Eating outside in Africa is always better than eating in a boring mall. If Melville is too grungy or too far away, you’ll want to be near 4th Avenue in Parkhurst. There are a lot of choices, but the most exciting one is Matthew and Lisa Kretzschmar’s place on 16th Street, just two blocks from 4th. They made a small, attached house with a big living room, a cute little courtyard, and a private entrance with a gate. It’s nicely decorated and there’s even a pull-out couch if you have kids. But the best part is the hosts. They are friendly, kind, and respectful. You feel like friends as soon as you meet them. Guests often become friends with them. If traveling is about making new connections, this is the place to stay.
At just R600 per night, you can stay at this wonderful accommodation in Parkhurst that can comfortably sleep two to four people. For booking inquiries, you can contact the owner at 0836025248 or visit the Airbnb website and search for ‘Perfect base to explore Parkhurst, Joburg, and SA’.
If you prefer a more stylish and luxurious option and don’t mind spending a bit extra, Gwen’s ‘The Cottage, Randburg’ is a stunning studio that costs R800 per night. Alternatively, Jo’s ‘Scarub Cottage on 11th’ is a one-bedroom gem available at an unbeatable price of only R325 per night. You can find both of these options on Airbnb’s website.
4. A Luxurious Retreat in Saxonwold
If you want the ultimate in luxury, look no further than the ‘Luxurious apartment’ in Saxonwold.
Image: Jotham Van Tonder
Hey there! Guess what? This place I found is not listed on Tripadvisor! Pretty cool, right? It’s not exactly within walking distance to restaurants like you mentioned, but let me tell you, the pictures had me hooked. And when I actually saw the place, it totally blew me away!
Saxonwold Manor is a unique apartment block with a charming architectural style. It’s made up of these beautiful two-story villa-like blocks, surrounded by meticulously designed English-style gardens. The whole place is like a little paradise, with pathways filled with the sweet scent of roses and hedges creating cozy outdoor spaces.
The apartment is managed by Madri Calitz, who makes sure everything is in perfect shape for the guests. You’ll find all the usual basics here, like olive oil, balsamic vinegar, rusks, and breakfast ingredients. How awesome is that?
There are two bedrooms in the apartment, and both have their own bathrooms. One bedroom has a king-size bed, while the other has a queen-size bed. The living room, dining area, and kitchen are all part of one open space. The furniture is modern and sleek, giving the place a clean and contemporary feel. And guess what? It opens up to a little balcony that overlooks the beautiful gardens. Talk about a great view!
The only downside is that the surrounding streets can get a bit busy, especially during rush hour. So, it’s not the best place if you’re looking to take a leisurely stroll. But don’t worry, there’s a parking space for your car in the basement, as well as a shaded spot outside.
Oh, and did I mention there’s a pool? Yup, a pool! It’s perfect for those hot summer days when you just want to take a refreshing dip.
Guess what? I found an amazing place to stay in Auckland Park, and I can’t wait to share it with you! It’s called {HOTEL NAME}, and it’s the perfect spot for your next trip. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
Let’s start with the most important thing – the cost. You’ll be happy to hear that {HOTEL NAME} offers incredibly affordable rates, starting from just R900 a night. And that’s not all – this price includes accommodation for up to four people. So whether you’re going on a family vacation or a fun trip with your friends, you can split the cost and save some money. Now that’s a deal you don’t want to miss!
5. Best in Auckland Park
Hey there!
Have you heard of this thing called Tripadvisor? It’s a website where people can leave reviews of all sorts of places – hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, you name it. It’s pretty cool because you can get an idea of what other people thought about a place before you decide to check it out yourself.
But let me tell you, it’s not always all sunshine and rainbows on Tripadvisor. It can be a bit tricky to navigate because you have to sift through a lot of different opinions. Some people might love a place while others absolutely hate it. So it’s important to take everything with a grain of salt and consider your own preferences when reading reviews.
Another thing to keep in mind is that not everyone has the same standards or expectations. What might be a dealbreaker for one person could be totally fine for someone else. So it’s important to understand where people are coming from and what they value when reading their reviews.
So, why am I telling you all this? Well, if you’re looking for a place to eat, stay, or visit, Tripadvisor can be a helpful tool. You just have to be mindful of the different perspectives and opinions out there.
Anyway, I hope this little insight into Tripadvisor helps you out. Happy exploring!
When I stay at Helen and Darryl Torr’s place, it feels like I’m borrowing a friend’s house. Their house has such a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The kitchen is not only well-equipped, but it’s also fully stocked with all the essentials, including some delicious coffee. This old house has so much character, with beautiful pressed ceilings and Oregon-pine floors. And the fireplace adds an extra touch of warmth and comfort.
There’s a TV with Netflix in the lounge if I feel like binge-watching my favorite shows, but honestly, the kitchen is the heart of this home. It’s where I can gather around the dining table, surrounded by an oriental rug and enjoy the beautiful view of the garden. The kitchen hob is top-notch, making cooking a delight.
If I feel like dining outside, there’s a table on the stoep where I can enjoy some al-fresco dining next to the braai. And if I want to take a dip, there’s a shared pool in the back garden. Parking is not an issue, as guests can use the garage.
Helen and Darryl are wonderful hosts, always ready to help with any questions or give recommendations on where to eat. It’s also great to know that I’m in Auckland Park, but just a short walk away from the main street of Melville.
Price: Only R1,300 per night for a four-person stay.
An Affordable Option: If you’re looking for a great deal, Lisa Swart offers another property in Melville. This two-bedroom semi-detached house is available for only R730 per night. It’s perfect for those seeking complete privacy since there are no other residents on the property. You can find this listing, called ‘The Great Little Melville House,’ on airbnb.com.
6. The Ultimate Choice in Melville
‘Poolside Oasis’

Not on Tripadvisor
Hey there! I’ve got a gem of a place to share with you that you won’t find on Tripadvisor. Melville, a trendy neighborhood, is always reinventing itself, and let me tell you, it’s looking fabulous right now! And guess what? I’ve found the perfect little spot for you called this charming cottage.
Now, the owner of this place, Lisa Swart, is quite the creative spirit. She’s a filmmaker turned furniture and home accessories designer during her time in South America. After returning to South Africa, she decided to pursue her passion for interior design, and boy, oh boy, does she have a knack for it!
When you step into this lovely cottage, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a world of elegance. The attention to detail is impeccable, and Lisa’s decorative touch is pure class. Oh, and the garden outside is meticulously maintained, creating a delightful backdrop for your stay. Did I mention there’s also a pool? It’s the cherry on top!
What’s even better is that this little slice of paradise is just a short stroll from Melville’s buzzing 7th Street. It’s like having all the excitement right at your doorstep. And get this – the price for a night’s stay is ridiculously good! Talk about getting more bang for your buck!
The guests who have stayed here have been raving about it, giving it a fantastic rating. As you can imagine, Lisa is in high demand, so if you’re captivated by the idea of staying in Melville, I highly recommend booking this place as soon as possible. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
Cost Around R770 a night (sleeps two).

Don’t Trust Tripadvisor
Hey there! Have you ever used Tripadvisor to find the perfect restaurant or hotel for your next getaway? Well, let me tell you something – it’s not always what it seems. Tripadvisor can be a bit of a mixed bag, and it’s important to take that into account when using it to make decisions.
I know, I know. Tripadvisor is known for its reviews and ratings that help us choose the best places to eat, sleep, and explore. But here’s the thing – those reviews can sometimes be misleading. It’s easy for businesses to manipulate their ratings, making them seem better than they actually are. So you might end up at a place that’s not as great as you expected.
That being said, Tripadvisor can still be a useful tool if you know how to navigate it. Instead of relying solely on the overall rating, it’s important to read the individual reviews and take them with a grain of salt. Look for patterns in the feedback and see if there are any common themes. This way, you can get a more accurate picture of what to expect.
Another thing to keep in mind is that everyone has different tastes and preferences. Just because a restaurant or hotel has a low rating doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. It might just not be the right fit for some people. So, it’s important to consider your own preferences and priorities when making a decision.
Ultimately, Tripadvisor is just one piece of the puzzle. It can provide some valuable insights, but it shouldn’t be the sole factor in your decision-making process. Trust your instincts, do some additional research, and use Tripadvisor as a starting point rather than the final word. After all, you know yourself better than any review site does!
So, next time you’re planning a trip and thinking about using Tripadvisor, remember to approach it with a healthy dose of skepticism. Don’t let it dictate your choices, but instead use it as a resource to guide you in the right direction. Happy travels!
Oh boy, let me tell you about this amazing spot in Emmarentia. It’s a hidden gem that’s less than 10 minutes away from the Melville Koppies Reserve. And let me tell you, the streets around here are so peaceful and full of trees. It’s like a little paradise in the middle of the city.
So, there’s this place called Sharleen Vinokur’s Cottages. Behind the gate, there’s this beautiful garden that Sharleen herself has created. And get this, there are three separate pathways that lead to three cozy studio cottages. It’s like having three little oasis spots all in one place.
Each cottage is equipped with everything you need to make your own meals. You’ve got a kitchenette, TV, Wi-Fi, and some outdoor seating so you can enjoy the fresh air. It’s really the perfect setup for a getaway.
Now, let me tell you about my favorite cottage, the “Stunning Studio.” Okay, I have to be honest here, the name is a bit silly. But don’t worry, Sharleen knows it and she’s planning on changing it. Anyway, this cottage is the largest out of the three, and let me tell you, it lives up to its name. When you walk in, you’re greeted with these lovely French doors that open up to the most charming little garden. It’s the kind of place you dream of coming back to after a long day of exploring.
And here’s a fun fact for you, last year, one lucky guest actually booked the Stunning Studio for a whole six months. That’s how much they loved it! I mean, who can blame them?
Now, let’s talk about Sharleen. You see, she’s not just a regular host, she’s a superhost. And it’s easy to see why. She’s great with people and she’s absolutely head over heels in love with her city. But that’s not all, she’s also into dancing, yoga, great food, and having good conversations. I don’t know about you, but that’s the kind of person I want to be around.
Price The price of ‘Stunning Studio’ is R600 per night and it can accommodate up to two people. Keep in mind that there is a minimum requirement of staying for two nights. The other options available are ‘Boutique Studio’ which costs R550 per night and ‘Stylish Studio’ which is priced at R500.
8. A Standout Choice in Brixton
Ranking #46 out of 348 Bed and Breakfasts/Inns on TripAdvisor
I’m perched right on the Brixton ridge and let me tell you, Zietzies has one of the most incredible views in Joburg – you can see all the way to the Magaliesberg mountain range! It’s located in a diverse and vibrant neighborhood, with residents from different income backgrounds. Here at Zietzies, we have four stunning rooms, each with its own artsy charm. Our most sought-after room is called ‘Kooier.’ It features a luxurious king-size bed and a Victorian slipper bath right in front of French doors that open up to a breathtaking view of northern Joburg. It’s absolutely très romantique.
As your host, you’ll be in the wonderful company of actress Elzabé Zietsman, who not only knows her way around the kitchen but is also an engaging conversationalist. Our dining room, aptly named Glass Cage (pictured below), isn’t your typical restaurant. It’s actually a private club that adheres to local regulations. It often attracts traveling academics, filmmakers, and artists. To become a member, all you need to do is donate R50, which goes towards supporting talented kids in the arts. We don’t have a fixed menu at Glass Cage because Elzabé prefers to cook based on the fresh ingredients available each day.
If you prefer to have more space or want to do some self-catering, we also offer a lovely two-bedroom cottage and three studio apartments just a short distance away. And you’re in luck because Brixton’s trendy Breezeblock Cafe is within walking distance.
Price You can stay at B&B for only R610 per person sharing. If you prefer apartments, they are available for R600 and can accommodate two people. For larger groups, the cottage is a great option at R750 per night and can sleep up to five people.
But here’s a cheaper alternative If you’re looking for a more affordable option, I highly recommend Roving Bantu. This amazing eatery in Brixton is run by the lovely couple Sifiso Ntuli and Ashley Heron. They have a garden studio available for the incredible price of only R280 per night, perfect for two people. You can find more information at rovingbantu.co.za.
