Discover 8 Incredible Beach Cottages in South Africa

Are you dreaming of a seaside getaway? I’ve explored the stunning coastline of South Africa to uncover some of the most amazing beach cottages our country has to offer. Allow me to introduce you to eight of my absolute favorites.

Kindly note: The prices mentioned here were accurate at the time of publication and may be subject to change. Make sure to verify the current rates with each establishment prior to making a booking.

1. The Beach Hut

Paternoster, Cape West Coast
Distance from Cape Town: 150km

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

Imagine this: a charming beach hut nestled in a secluded spot, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Atlantic. That’s exactly what you’ll find at The Beach Hut, a hidden gem in Paternoster. Despite the recent surge in property development, this place manages to retain its privacy and tranquility.

Situated on the northern end of Mosselbank, among a handful of homes, The Beach Hut feels like an oasis. Step onto your patio, and all you’ll see is nature at its finest – fynbos, sand, and the endless ocean. It’s the perfect escape.

Although the beach may not be your typical sandy paradise – with broken mussel shells scattered along the shore – don’t let that discourage you. Take a plunge and cool off in the clear waters. The unique beauty of this spot more than makes up for the lack of soft sand between your toes.

In true West Coast fashion, the three bedrooms with private bathrooms are adorned in a refreshing palette of blues and whites, complemented by tasteful antique elements scattered throughout. As I step into the lounge overlooking the mesmerizing ocean, I am greeted by an ethereal ambiance. The room is showered in natural light, courtesy of a skylight and glass doors. Above the comfortable yet understated couches hangs a striking chandelier, casting a warm glow. The focal point of the room is undoubtedly the coffee table, crafted from driftwood and adorned with an assortment of shells and starfish, instantly transporting me to the seashore. Subtle coastal artwork adorns the walls, striking a perfect balance without overwhelming the space. I can’t help but imagine how much children would enjoy the two lofts filled to the brim with toys, while those seeking active adventures can take advantage of the provided mountain bikes and surfboard. For those who prefer a more relaxed stay, three TVs are available, allowing for a cozy evening of DStv.

When you visit Paternoster, it’s not complete without trying the local restaurants. We have some recommendations for you. The Noisy Oyster is perfect for a relaxed dinner, while Gaaitjie offers a more upscale dining experience. If you’re looking for the best breakfast in town, head over to Oep ve Koep, run by Kobus van der Merwe. And for a beautiful beachfront location where you can enjoy sundowners, Voorstrandt is the place to go. Lastly, if you’re in the mood for high tea, don’t miss Abalone House.

Price: Starting at R6000 per day for the house (sleeps eight)

2. West of the Moon

Churchhaven, Cape West Coast
Distance from Cape Town: 115km

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

When you step into West of the Moon in West Coast National Park, you can’t help but notice its charming, vintage vibe. The combination of whitewashed, rustic beach elements with weathered furniture and modern finishes could easily be seen as cliché, but this place manages to pull it off in an authentic way. Everything, from the brass light switches to the old-fashioned furniture, the blue kettle, and the kitsch containers, exudes a delightfully dated atmosphere.

When my friend Kevin French and I came up with the idea for our little seaside cottage, we wanted it to capture the essence of a traditional West Coast fisherman’s home. We painstakingly designed cardboard models of what we envisioned and enlisted the help of an architect to bring our dreams to life.

Our main goal was authenticity, so we incorporated low doorways, small windows, and even a thatched roof. The result is a charming white-walled house with vibrant red and green window frames. It’s tucked away amidst the lush shrubbery, just a stone’s throw from the breathtaking Langebaan Lagoon, where you’ll often spot graceful pink flamingos. And what better way to enjoy the view than from the comfort of our veranda’s loungers and daybeds?

Inside, the cottage can comfortably accommodate up to six people across three elegantly simple bedrooms. While we’ve added a touch of color with brightly colored enamel jugs and basins, these were actually originally used for bathing. Now, guests have the luxury of a Victorian bath and a shower. And don’t worry, we have all the modern amenities covered too, with hot running water and electricity.

When it comes to entertainment, we wanted to encourage our guests to truly disconnect and soak up the tranquility of their surroundings. That’s why you won’t find a TV in our cottage. Instead, we invite you to make use of the outdoor braai area, complete with a grid for cooking up a delicious feast.

We hope you’ll join us in experiencing the charm and serenity of our West Coast fisherman’s cottage. It’s a truly unique getaway that offers a glimpse into the past while providing all the comforts of the present.

When you visit Churchhaven, there isn’t much to do besides swimming, bird-watching, and relaxing. However, if your kids start getting restless, you can take them on a hike, go cycling, or even kayaking in the nearby nature reserve. And don’t worry if the weather turns bad because you can always snuggle up with a hot-water bottle and read a book in the cozy loft or by the fireplace.

Here’s some information you might find useful: The price for renting the house in Churchhaven is between R4900 and R9000 per night, and it can accommodate up to six people. If you want to book or have any questions, you can contact them at 021 790 0972 or visit their website at www.perfecthideaways.co.za.

Another great place to visit is The Lighthouse in Yzerfontein, Cape West Coast. It’s only 87km away from Cape Town, making it a convenient location for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

The sign by the front door that says “no shoes” immediately tells you what kind of place you’re stepping into. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by a clean and bright interior that feels cozy and inviting. Despite its size, this place manages to feel warm and intimate, thanks to the wooden floors, vintage cupboards, picture frames, and a charming turquoise display cabinet.

On those stormy days when you can’t enjoy the deck outside, the large fireplace becomes the heart of the home. It’s the perfect spot to snuggle up and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate from the open-plan kitchen. And speaking of the kitchen, the eccentric coffee table in the living room adds a quirky touch to the space.

From the comfort of this retreat, you can take in the refreshing scent of the sea and the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. It’s the perfect place to unwind and relax.

According to Andrej Brandt, the owner and designer of this amazing retreat, the name “Nautical Haven” is inspired by two things. First, there’s the unique round shape of the master suite upstairs, which offers incredible 180-degree views of the sea. And second, from this room, you can even spot the lighthouse on Dassen Island. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience to wake up to such breathtaking views right from your bed.

You won’t be disappointed with this spacious vacation home. It can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests and has five bathrooms to ensure everyone’s convenience. The dining table is perfect for gathering your loved ones for a delicious feast. For families with young children, there’s a mini dining table, board games, kids’ crockery, and even a stair gate for added safety. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the kids if they decide to explore outside, as the sea can be rough sometimes.

Let’s talk about the price. In the low season, you can book the entire house for R5500 per night, which is a great deal considering it can comfortably sleep 10 people. However, during the peak season, the price goes up to R9500 per night. So plan accordingly to get the best value for your money.

If you’re interested in booking or have any questions, you can reach out to them at 083 299 0500 or visit their website at www.lighthouselocation.com.

4. Thalassa

If you’re looking for a beautiful retreat in Cape Town, Thalassa is the place for you. Located in Simon’s Town, it’s just 40km away from Cape Town, making it a convenient escape from the bustling city.

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

If you’re seeking an affordable and charming seaside retreat, look no further than this picturesque fisherman’s hut nestled between Simon’s Town and Cape Point. This refurbished clapboard hut offers incredible value that even locals can’t resist for a weekend getaway.

With its reasonable pricing and stunning views of False Bay, it’s no wonder that people flock to this hidden gem. Despite being located on the owner’s property, this cozy hut feels secluded and private, thanks to its location on a fynbos-covered mountain.

The hut features three bedrooms, each exuding a chic farmhouse aesthetic. The beds are adorned with crisp linen and antique trunks and suitcases lend a touch of vintage charm. Old kitchen scales and whisky jugs decorate the wooden shelves, creating a unique atmosphere. The sash windows allow for a refreshing sea breeze to flow through the rooms.

The bathroom, inspired by the seaside, is elegantly whitewashed, with a splash of color provided by vibrant paintings created by a talented family member.

I’m going to tell you about Thalassa, a place that has a special meaning in Greek because it means ‘sea’. Thalassa is located by Pyramid Rock, a place famous for its kelp forest and the incredible creatures that live there. Did you know that you can even swim with gentle cow sharks in this area? It’s one of the few places in the whole world where you can do that! But if swimming with sharks isn’t your thing, don’t worry. There’s still so much to see and do at Thalassa. You can throw a chop on the Weber and while you cook, you might get lucky and see Cape clawless otters or whales if it’s the right season. There’s a little deck where you can relax and enjoy the view while you wait for your food to cook. Thalassa is an amazing place that will make you feel connected to the sea and its wonders.

When it comes to accommodations, you don’t need to spend a fortune on DStv, which costs R25 per day. Instead, kick back on the comfy leather couches, adorned with mismatched cushions. Grab a glass of the refreshing lemon-and-mint water that’s conveniently provided and browse through the amusing Giles cartoon collection on the bookshelf. However, I have two important things to mention. Firstly, if you plan to visit the main house, be aware that the resident dog can be mischievous, so it’s a good idea to call ahead if you need anything. Secondly, don’t forget to close the windows, as the area nearby is known for having sneaky baboons that may come barging in if given the chance.

Here are the details you need to know:

– Price: The cottage, which can accommodate five people, costs between R3500 and R3750 per night.

– Contact: You can reach them at 021 786 1118 or visit their website at www.capestay.co.za/thalassa.

Now, let’s move on to the next spot on our list.

5. Summerhill

Location: Blombos, Garden Route

Distance from Mossel Bay: 120km

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

Imagine having an entire beach to yourself during the summer. It seems almost impossible, right? Well, at Summerhill, a hidden gem on the Southern Cape coast, between Cape Agulhas and Stilbaai, you can experience just that. Tucked away amidst the fynbos, this tranquil retreat offers seclusion like no other. With no television to distract you, the only sounds you’ll hear are the cheerful melodies of birds and the gentle lapping of waves against the soft, white sand. Embrace the freedom of kicking off your shoes and unwinding on the wooden deck, and venture out only when you feel like taking a refreshing dip in the ocean. It’s worth noting that reaching any nearby towns can be quite a challenge, with Riversdale, the closest one, being an hour’s drive away.

The trimmings at this place are really nice and modern. The furniture has soft pastel colors, and there are wicker chairs, wooden floors, and comfortable couches with colorful scatter cushions. I love the interesting cut-out lamps and the quirky mosaic bathroom. The family portrait canvases on the walls give the place a personal touch. And when you open the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, you get an amazing view of the sunset from the lounge. Plus, you can enjoy a nice cool breeze on those days when you don’t need to use the freestanding fireplace.

The Summerhill accommodation can sleep up to six adults. There are two double en-suite mezzanine master bedrooms that are really spacious and comfortable. And if you’re traveling with kids, they can share the bunk beds. After playing all day building sandcastles, they can use the outdoor shower to wash off the sand. The drive to get to the hideaway can be a bit bumpy at times, especially if you’re coming from the N2. It’s doable in a regular car, but it’s much more enjoyable if you have a high-clearance vehicle or a 4×4.

6. High Rocks Beach House

Location: Umkomaas, on the KZN South Coast
Approximate Distance from Durban: 50 kilometers

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

Imagine finding a coastal getaway that feels luxurious but doesn’t break the bank. Well, that’s exactly what you’ll get at this incredible fisherman’s hut on the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. With its stunning design and affordable prices, it’s an unbeatable combination.

Step inside and prepare to be amazed. The gorgeous screed floors, the lofty ceilings, and the stunning Nguni rugs set the tone for a truly remarkable experience. As you explore further, you’ll find abstract art, elegant leather headboards, and exquisite ornate lamps. The vibrant paintings scattered throughout the rooms add a touch of glamour to the otherwise pristine white surroundings.

When it’s time to relax, there’s no better place to unwind than the spacious lounge. Sink into the comfortable couches and lose yourself in the world of DStv. But don’t get too comfy, because there’s an entire outdoor paradise waiting for you to explore.

Step out onto the viewing deck and let the magic of the coastal environment envelop you. The hammocks sway gently in the breeze, inviting you to take a moment to yourself. Vibrant scatter cushions add a burst of color, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. And if you’re feeling hungry, fire up the portable braai and enjoy a delicious meal with a view.

Of course, no coastal retreat would be complete without a pool, and High Rocks doesn’t disappoint. Take a dip in the refreshing splash pool and feel your cares melt away. It’s the perfect place to cool off on a hot day or simply embrace the joy of being by the sea.

When you stay at High Rocks, you’ll quickly understand why it’s so beloved by guests. It offers the best of both worlds – the elegance of a luxury getaway and the affordability of a budget break. It’s a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered. So why wait? Plan your escape to High Rocks today and experience coastal bliss like never before.

The house at a low price seems tempting, but there’s a twist – a railway line runs between the property and the rocky shore. Don’t worry though, because the house is elevated and you won’t actually see the trains. However, you might hear an occasional toot-toot and feel some short-lived tremors.

Umkomaas is a popular destination for diving, angling, and even surfing. If you prefer something simpler, you can check out the neighboring Aliwal Bungalows/House on the Beach cottage. It’s a basic option but it comes with a great veranda and swimming pool. Two friendly dogs, Gabby and T-bone, keep an eye on both units. If they happen to wander inside, a simple command will get them moving along.

Price: You can rent the whole house for R3750 per night.

8 of the coolest beach cottages in South Africa

But let me tell you, it’s the little things that really make this beach cottage shine. Even though it’s not right on the sand, there are still plenty of thoughtful touches that will make you feel right at home. Take a look in the kitchen and you’ll find a neat rack of paprika, thyme, basil, and other spices. And don’t forget about the Twinings teas, honesty minibar, and handmade bath salts – pure luxury!

And that’s not all. This place has all the comforts you could want. Customized bottled water, electric blankets, and heated towel rails – they’ve thought of everything. And have you ever snuggled up in a mohair blanket? Trust me, you’ll never want to go back. Plus, the 100 percent cotton Mungo bath towels feel like a dream.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. If it’s not right on the beach, what’s the point? Let me tell you. This palatial house on the Sunshine Coast will blow you away. Sure, it’s two roads back from the water’s edge, but believe me, it’s worth it. Inside, you’ll find a dining table big enough to seat an army of 20. Movie night, anyone? And check out the TV area and gas-and-stone fireplace – perfect for cozying up on those chilly evenings. Oh, and let’s not forget about the massive couches that are, I kid you not, as big as single beds. They’re so comfortable you won’t ever want to leave.

And here’s a little secret. If you’re a remote worker like me, you’re in luck. The master suite upstairs has its own office with Wi-Fi access. Just imagine: you can get your work done and then relax on the welcoming couch with a cup of Nespresso. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I want to tell you about the two beautiful rooms downstairs that I found. One of them is wonderfully fancy with a tea tray, yummy desserts, and a big TV. The other one is just for kids, and you’ll find toys, books, and puzzles for them in a special little nook under the stairs. It’s like a hidden treasure!

But the best thing I discovered was the outside deck. It has everything you could dream of: a pool for splashing around (don’t worry, they even provide towels), a place to have a barbecue, comfy loungers, and a really cool hanging chair that looks like an oval egg. When you sit in it, you feel like you’re floating in the air! From there, you can see the Bushmans River and the breathtaking ocean. Just a word of warning, though – once you sit in that chair, time seems to stand still. You’ll be so relaxed, you might even fall asleep!

If you’re wondering about the price, it starts at R1265 per person if you’re sharing a room. If you want the whole house to yourself, it’s R4995. That’s not too bad, especially when you think about how many people it can fit (up to eight!). If you want more information, you can call them at 046 648 3466 or visit their website: www.theoysterboxbeachhouse.co.za.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention – I found a picture of another great beach house called High Rocks Beach House. Isn’t it amazing?
