I can’t help but imagine how much children would enjoy the two lofts filled to the brim with toys, while those seeking active adventures can take advantage of the provided mountain bikes and surfboard. When my friend Kevin French and I came up with the idea for our little seaside cottage, we wanted it to capture the essence of a traditional West Coast fisherman’s home. We painstakingly designed cardboard models of what we envisioned and enlisted the help of an architect to bring our dreams to life.

Our main goal was authenticity, so we incorporated low doorways, small windows, and even a thatched roof. The result is a charming white-walled house with vibrant red and green window frames. It’s tucked away amidst the lush shrubbery, just a stone’s throw from the breathtaking Langebaan Lagoon, where you’ll often spot graceful pink flamingos. And what better way to enjoy the view than from the comfort of our veranda’s loungers and daybeds?

Inside, the cottage can comfortably accommodate up to six people across three elegantly simple bedrooms. While we’ve added a touch of color with brightly colored enamel jugs and basins, these were actually originally used for bathing. Now, guests have the luxury of a Victorian bath and a shower. And don’t worry, we have all the modern amenities covered too, with hot running water and electricity.

When it comes to entertainment, we wanted to encourage our guests to truly disconnect and soak up the tranquility of their surroundings. That’s why you won’t find a TV in our cottage. Thalassa is located by Pyramid Rock, a place famous for its kelp forest and the incredible creatures that live there. Did you know that you can even swim with gentle cow sharks in this area? It’s one of the few places in the whole world where you can do that! But if swimming with sharks isn’t your thing, don’t worry. There’s still so much to see and do at Thalassa. You can throw a chop on the Weber and while you cook, you might get lucky and see Cape clawless otters or whales if it’s the right season. There’s a little deck where you can relax and enjoy the view while you wait for your food to cook. Thalassa is an amazing place that will make you feel connected to the sea and its wonders.

When it comes to accommodations, you don’t need to spend a fortune on DStv, which costs R25 per day. Instead, kick back on the comfy leather couches, adorned with mismatched cushions. Grab a glass of the refreshing lemon-and-mint water that’s conveniently provided and browse through the amusing Giles cartoon collection on the bookshelf. However, I have two important things to mention. But the best thing I discovered was the outside deck. It has everything you could dream of: a pool for splashing around (don’t worry, they even provide towels), a place to have a barbecue, comfy loungers, and a really cool hanging chair that looks like an oval egg. When you sit in it, you feel like you’re floating in the air! From there, you can see the Bushmans River and the breathtaking ocean. Just a word of warning, though – once you sit in that chair, time seems to stand still. You’ll be so relaxed, you might even fall asleep!
