Here’s what we discovered about the accommodation:

• Previously known as Warmbaths, Bela-Bela is a modest town in Limpopo that doesn’t offer much besides the Forever Resort hot springs. However, what makes Bela-Bela special is its surrounding bushveld. It’s quite remarkable how quickly you can escape the hustle and bustle of Gauteng’s cities and find yourself on dirt tracks, making way for zebras to cross the road.

• Bela-Bela is more of a region than a town, which makes it challenging to do proper research. The listed destinations under Bela-Bela are spread out across long distances. So, it’s best to rely on your host’s directions rather than GPS. The Mabula Reserve, spanning over 12,000 hectares, is situated an hour east of town, while Thaba Monaté Game Lodge can be found an hour north. Mabalingwe is the closest to Bela-Bela, with its main gate just a 30-minute drive away.

Let’s talk about the top safari reserves in South Africa – Mabula and Mabalingwe. These reserves are famous for their incredible wildlife, including the Big Five. Keep in mind, though, that the lions are kept separate from the other animals.

For example, as soon as you step into her self-catering home, you’re greeted with monogrammed towels and a warm welcome spelled out in pebbles on the bed. And let me tell you, those beds are something special – extra-long king-size beds dressed in the finest Egyptian cotton.

But Petro’s attention to detail doesn’t stop there. She wants her guests to feel like they’re staying in a luxury guest house rather than a self-catering home. That’s why she provides slippers, dressing gowns, and even branded toiletries. It’s these little touches that make all the difference.

Now, Petro actually has another home up in the hills of the Idwala section of Mabalingwe. But when she discovered a herd of buffalo grazing on the building site of Stone Lodge, she couldn’t resist. And I can see why. The surroundings are so peaceful and serene. It’s no wonder that animals are drawn to this place. The birds love it too. And if you listen carefully at night, you can even hear the majestic roar of lions coming from the nearby camp.

So, if you’re looking for a truly special getaway, Petro’s self-catering home at Stone Lodge is the place to be. You’ll be amazed by the attention to detail and the tranquil surroundings. It’s a getaway unlike any other. Come and experience it for yourself.

Let me tell you about this incredible place I found. The house has three big bedrooms, each measuring 50 square meters, and they all have their own bathrooms with stone baths and indoor and outdoor showers. What’s really neat is that each bedroom also has doors that lead out onto the deck. Isn’t that cool?

The kitchen is huge and has everything you need. And outside, there are these amazing daybeds and loungers where you can relax and enjoy the view of the pool and the bush. There’s even a semi-circle of seating around a firepit – perfect for cozying up in the evenings.

In case you’re wondering, the bedrooms are all equally luxurious, so it’s really easy for adults to share. And if you have a child with you, no worries – the third bedroom has a single bed just for them.

Milkwood is a unique blend of luxury living and the joy of being outdoors. The entertainment area is spacious, with comfortable sofas surrounding a cozy stone fireplace. A thatched roof provides shade, and a wooden path through the bush leads to a pool and an outdoor dining table. Another pathway leads to a large boma area, complete with a firepit and a built-in braai. The bedrooms are located along a separate pathway, each with its own private entrance. Milkwood’s expansive layout allows for both privacy and togetherness, making it the perfect home for sharing with others.

The owner of Milkwood, James Bravery, intentionally designed the house with ample space, rather than building it up in the hills of Mabalingwe, where outdoor living is limited by the size of the deck. Although it was initially purchased for personal enjoyment, James has found that it has also been an excellent investment. Despite others thinking he was crazy to invest so much in a property in such a remote location, James cherishes waking up to elephants and buffaloes in his driveway. It’s an experience that cannot be quantified.

There are two amazing en-suite bedrooms available that come with four-poster beds. What’s even better is that there’s an interleading door that connects these bedrooms to a twin-bed room that also has an en-suite bathroom. How cool is that? And if you need extra sleeping space for your kids, no problem! The bedrooms have slide-out beds. You can even convert them into double beds if you prefer. Talk about flexibility!

Before I even reach the entrance gate, I am greeted with a stunning view of well-maintained lawns and towering thatched roofs. The warm welcome continues as I am handed a refreshing cold drink and invited to step inside the open and airy lounge and dining area.

If it’s the evening, I am entranced by the crackling fire in the central fireplace, surrounded by the soft glow of candles and lanterns. The tables are elegantly draped in white, creating a truly romantic atmosphere. While Itaga Lodge offers twice-daily game drives, I am equally content to simply relax and enjoy the surroundings. I can wander barefoot from the bar to the pool, taking in the sights and sounds of the incredible birdlife and wildlife that inhabit the area.

Itaga Lodge boasts fantastic amenities, including a small gym, a relaxing spa, and a viewing deck with a breathtaking view of a small, floodlit waterhole. For a more authentic experience, I can also enjoy a cozy evening around the bush boma, or unwind in the DStv loft lounge. With all of these features included, Itaga Lodge truly offers an exceptional safari-style experience that provides great value for money.

The inn has eight rooms, divided into units of four. If you want a room where no one will pass by, you can book numbers 1, 4 (especially private), 5, or 8 (with the best outdoor shower). Keep in mind that superior rooms offer a late checkout at 1pm, which is worth the extra R150 per person.

I feel a special connection with Hendri van Dyk’s wife, Liezl. She had a unique upbringing in the Kruger, just like Mowgli from the famous Jungle Book. You see, Liezl’s mother, Lynn van Rooyen, is a renowned ranger in SANParks. Inspired by their love for the wilderness, Hendri and Liezl decided to create their own little haven in the bush when they had children of their own. They named it Feeskraal.

Unlike other lodges in Mabalingwe, Feeskraal is smaller and more intimate. It offers just two en-suite bedrooms and a loft room, making it perfect for solo travelers or couples looking for a secluded getaway. And here’s a bonus: the Wi-Fi signal is surprisingly strong, so you can even consider it for a productive midweek escape.

I am amazed by the design of this house. It’s like a box, but it has a unique touch with its sloping tiled roof and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The glass lets the sunlight pour in, making the whole place feel bright and open. The owners, who happen to be Dutch, seem to have found a way to break away from the usual brick-and-thatch style that is so common in this area. And it’s great news for people with allergies since there is no thatch in sight.

Upstairs, you’ll find four bedrooms, two on each side of the house. Each wing has its own bathroom, so it’s perfect for families or groups of friends who want a bit of privacy. The living area is open-plan and clutter-free, creating a sense of space. The doors can be stacked away, seamlessly connecting the indoors with the outside deck. There’s even a braai and a small pool, though I wish it were bigger. But here’s something you should know – the road to the nearest property runs alongside the house, so it’s not the most private place on these pages.
