Settling in for a calm and relaxed afternoon at Elandskloof, near Dullstroom.

My family name, Van der Merwe, means “from the stretches of the River Merwede” in Holland. I like to believe that this is why I am drawn to bodies of water – rivers, lakes, dams, oceans. Or maybe it’s because our bodies are made up of half H20. When I was growing up in Nelspruit, which is now Mbombela, weekends were often filled with trips to nearby streams, pools, and waterfalls. The Panorama Route, around Sabie and Graskop, offered us so many choices when it came to picking the perfect waterfall for a family picnic. Lone Creek, Bridal Veil, and Horseshoe were just a few of the options. I have fond memories of celebrating birthdays and playing in the water at Mac Mac Pools, and pretending we were at the beach in Barberton’s “seaside” – a beautiful sandy area near the water in the nature reserve. On Saturdays, we would spend the entire day relaxing on my dad’s catamaran at Da Gama Dam near White River. We would fish, swim, and have a braai. Since I recently moved back to my home province, I have been on a quest to find campsites that are conveniently close to a river or dam. There is something for everyone, even if all you want is to have sundowners next to a peaceful babbling brook.

Imagine the stunning sight of the sun setting over the Crocodile River, casting its golden glow onto the vast expanse of Kruger National Park.

Welcome to Marloth Park, a charming town and wildlife sanctuary spanning 1,500 hectares, nestled between Komatipoort and Malelane. Here, in this municipal campground, you’ll find an unparalleled experience just a fence away from Kruger National Park. The campground owes its name to the generous farmer who donated the land, enabling the creation of this beloved recreational area. With its highly sought-after accommodation, especially during school vacations and winter, it’s no wonder Marloth Park is a favorite destination.

Pitch your tent at one of the ten campsites that face the river, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by convenience and comfort. Each site features shade awnings, water taps, lights, power points, and well-maintained ablution facilities. But the real highlight is the braais and picnic tables with benches positioned right against the fence. This prime location allows you to dine while soaking in the incredible views of the river and the park beyond. And if that’s not enough, by the end of this year, ten additional sites will be available, four of which are already accessible. While these sites might be farther from the river, they are nestled under the canopy of magnificent indigenous trees, providing a unique camping experience.

Welcome to the magnificent resort! This place is a haven for bird and tree enthusiasts like you and me. Imagine being surrounded by beautiful fig, acacia, leadwood, and sausage trees. They are scattered throughout the resort, creating a picturesque landscape. And the best part? We have the opportunity to witness an amazing variety of wildlife, including lions and leopards. Don’t worry, though – the resort is fully fenced to ensure our safety.

The management here claims that we can experience the thrill of encountering the entire Big 5 without even leaving the campsite during our week-long stay. Isn’t that incredible? We’ve set up camp under a magnificent leadwood tree. Our spot is perfect – it’s close to the fence and offers a breathtaking view of the dense bush in Marloth Park.

As we relax and immerse ourselves in nature’s embrace, we may even spot families of adventurous guests driving past in their own “safari” through the park. How exciting!

Let’s Do This!

Hey, you can’t just chill with the hippos in the river, but don’t worry, there’s a huge swimming pool you can take a dip in. It’s not just for overnight guests, day visitors can use it too! Plus, there’s even a tennis court if you feel like channeling your inner Serena Williams. And let me tell you, Marloth Park is the perfect place for a leisurely walk, jog, or bike ride. You have to check out Crocodile Road, it runs alongside the river and the fence, so it’s a great spot for a casual stroll or drive. Oh, and if you want to enjoy some incredible wildlife views while chowing down on a delicious meal, you absolutely must visit the A-amazing River View restaurant. The name says it all!

Here’s Some Info:

• You’ll find the Crocodile River right here.

• We have a total of 14 campsites, but the best ones are the 10 along the river. You’ll love waking up to that view!

• The campsite costs start at R350 per night, and you can have up to six people in one campsite. The more, the merrier, right?

Plus, There’s More:

Now, if you’re up for some additional adventure, Kruger’s Crocodile Bridge gate is just 25km away. Grab your binoculars and head over there to see some amazing animals. The entrance fee is R93 for adults and R47 for kids. Trust me, it’s worth every penny. Oh, and if you need to stock up on supplies or just want to have a good time, check out the Bush Centre. It’s only four kilometers from the resort and has everything from restaurants and shops to a waterpark and even a nursery. You won’t be bored, that’s for sure!

2. Calling All Nature Lovers with Style:

Welcome to AfriCamps at Mackers!

7 Waterside campsites in Mpumalanga_1

When I first set foot on the deck of the tent, I was immediately drawn to the built-in sofa and the charming braai pit by the water. I knew right away that this was a place where evenings were meant to be spent chatting and connecting with loved ones.

Let me give you a little background on Mackers. This wonderful place has been around for six years now, offering camping and cottages to its guests. However, in July 2018, they joined forces with AfriCamps, a renowned glamping expert in South Africa. Mackers is the first upcountry site in their portfolio, conveniently located between Sabie and Hazyview in Mpumalanga. The tents are thoughtfully arranged near the water, allowing guests to choose between a serene upstream experience or a more adventurous stay downstream, close to the rapids. During my visit, I had the pleasure of staying in tent number 8, and throughout the night, I could hear the soothing symphony of the Sabie River.

When you stay in one of our tents, you’ll have plenty of space and comfort. Our tents are designed with style and can accommodate up to five people in two separate areas. Inside, you’ll find a luxurious bathroom, air conditioning, and even a fireplace to keep you warm during those chilly winter camping trips. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove, oven, fridge, and everything you need to cook a delicious meal. On the outside, there’s a spacious deck where you can enjoy a braai pit under the shade of beautiful indigenous trees. In fact, one of the trees even reaches down to touch the water. And don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with all the supplies you need in our honesty shop. Plus, you can borrow some board games for a little extra fun. If you don’t feel like cooking, we offer a self-catering breakfast basket and dinner braai pack that you can order. So come and experience a truly amazing camping getaway with us.

Here’s What You Can Do
You can treat yourself to a relaxing massage right in your own tent. And if that’s not your thing, you can unwind on a comfortable sun lounger by the pool. Feeling a bit adventurous? Take a short and delightful hike along the river, where you’ll discover more excitement like thrilling rapids and deep pools for a refreshing swim. Oh, and keep an eye out for our trusty camp dog, Pig. He serves as the ‘hippo alarm system’ of Mackers – if a hippo gets too close, Pig will bark the night away. Don’t forget to look up in the sky and search for a unique fish eagle mating pair, as well as the rare African finfoots and narina trogons. This area is home to 150 different bird species, so you’re in for a treat!

3. For old-school family holidays

Merry Pebbles Resort

7 Waterside campsites in Mpumalanga_1

When I’m grilling near the water, I can see the mischief of vervet monkeys swinging from the trees. They really enjoy hanging over the water!

Back in 1970, my father purchased this farm, and I can still recall how tiny all the poplar trees were at the time. Nowadays, these giants stand tall over the campsites, showcasing their grandeur. Despite being only 2km from the forestry town of Sabie, the resort feels utterly untouched and peaceful. The lawns are lush, and our barbecue spot was just a stone’s throw away from the river. To provide peace of mind for cautious campers, there are ambient spotlights that illuminate the campsites and the river at night, along with security beams and cameras. The ablutions are spotless, there are plenty of electrical outlets for campers, and there’s a wide range of accommodation options and countless activities available. It’s no wonder the resort is fully booked during long weekends and the summer holidays. The busiest times are during special events, such as the Sabie River Tube Race and the Sabie Classic Mountain Bike Race, both occurring in February.

The Sabie River is so clear and shallow here that it’s practically see-through. If you find the river a bit too cold for comfort, don’t worry! There’s a fantastic heated pool just waiting for you, along with some refreshing cold pools equipped with exciting waterslides. These pools are conveniently located near the restaurant, recreation hall, and play park. You won’t run out of things to do here – there’s a whole bunch of activities to burn off your extra energy. You can try your hand at putt-putt and ping-pong, or maybe have a game of tennis. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are trampolines and even a giant outdoor chessboard! And just in case you need anything, there’s a mini-market, bottle store, and laundry service available right on the premises.

If you’re into biking, birding, tubing (you can buy tubes here), or fishing, you’re in luck! These activities are the most popular ones around here. The river is stocked with rainbow trout, and you can also find yellowfish swimming around naturally. For those who love a good hike, the Loerie Day Trail is perfect for you. It starts right outside Merry Pebbles’ entrance. This circular hike will take you through the beautiful surroundings, along the water, and through the valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through plantations, indigenous forest, and even stumble upon some stunning waterfalls. To explore this trail, you’ll need a permit that costs R20.

4. Perfect for fishing and boating

Experience the beauty of Primkop Dam

7 Waterside campsites in Mpumalanga_1

If you’re planning on camping here, you should know that you’ll be sharing the campsite with people who love fishing. And you know what? You might as well give it a try too! Just keep in mind that when the dam is full, vehicles cannot park in this area.

Have you heard of Primkop? It’s a dam that stretches long and narrow, flowing into another thin body of water called Manchester Dam. The White River Valley Conservancy takes care of it. You’ll find this beautiful place just 13km away from White River, nestled in a basin surrounded by farmlands and rocky outcrops that are typical of the Lowveld region. And guess what? It’s conveniently close to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

Now, here’s the thing. When I visited during late summer, the dam was only 20% full. That meant the waterline was about 70m away from the campsites. But don’t you worry, they have plans to pump water in from the Crocodile River to replenish it. The facilities and bookings are managed by the Lowveld Angling & Boating Association.

Let me tell you about the bathrooms here. They are something else! They were revamped in 2018 and now they have these unisex, semi-outdoor bathrooms that are made with corrugated iron and wood. It’s a mix of rustic and chic industrial design. Quite an interesting combo if you ask me!

The camping area is located along one side of the dam. And from there, you can enjoy breathtaking views of orchards embracing the granite hills across the water. It’s truly a sight to behold!

When I arrived at the campsite, I was pleased to see that the spacing between each site was generous. This meant that we had plenty of privacy and didn’t have to worry about being too close to our neighbors. In addition, the amenities like taps, dustbins, and power points were conveniently located nearby. The campsite was also well-shaded by lush trees, providing a beautiful spot to pitch our tent.

We were given site number 17, which is known for being one of the most popular spots. I could see why – it was situated far enough away from other sites to give us some peace and quiet, but close enough to the bathrooms that we didn’t have to trek too far. The atmosphere was tranquil and serene, as the campsite has regulations in place to prevent any loud music, jet skis, or motorbikes. Additionally, boats on the water are required to have a limit of eight horsepower.

It’s worth noting that there isn’t a shop on-site, so it’s important to stock up on supplies in a nearby town before arriving. However, the campsite does offer a great fishing opportunity at Primkop Dam. Anglers are drawn to the dam for its variety of fish such as barbel, bass, bream, and carp. Just be aware that swimming in the dam is not advised due to the potential presence of hippos and crocodiles.

Here’s some information:

• Primkop Dam

• There are 41 stands, 30 of which are along the shore

• The cost is R100 per campsite (maximum of six people) plus R50 for adults, R25 for kids, R40 per car, and R30 per boat.

Additionally:

If you’re interested in a dam for watersports, you can check out Klipkoppie, which is located 18 kilometers away. If you prefer canoeing and swimming, Longmere Dam is a good option and it’s 20 kilometers away.

5. For biking and outdoor activities

Mankele Mountain Bike Park

7 Waterside campsites in Mpumalanga_1

When you camp at Mankele, you’ll find yourself above the river, with a gentle slope leading down to a grassy area by the bank. It’s the perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts, especially mountain bikers, as Mankele is known for its amazing biking trails. In fact, there are 11 different trails to choose from, ranging in difficulty and length. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced biker, there’s something for everyone here, with trails as short as 2.4km and as long as 55km.

Although Mankele is relatively new compared to other campsites, having opened in 2007, it has quickly become a popular destination. The camp-sites are still growing, so most of the trees there are still small and don’t provide much shade. However, if you choose a stand near the river, you’ll be surrounded by dense indigenous trees that offer plenty of shade. The only downside is that these spots have less grass, but hey, you can’t have it all!

If you’re in the mood for a bit more luxury, Mankele also offers en-suite safari tents. These tents are hidden away in the bush, providing privacy and a unique experience. Each tent has a double bed, three single beds, a braai area for cooking, and a deck with a table and chairs. You’ll have everything you need right at your fingertips.

So, if you’re looking for a camping experience that combines beautiful scenery, thrilling biking trails, and comfortable accommodations, then Mankele is the place to be. You’ll have a great time exploring the outdoors and making memories that will last a lifetime.

I just discovered this hidden gem called Mankele. It’s tucked away between the Houtbosloop River and a beautiful indigenous forest. The campsite is truly stunning, especially with the magnificent mountain that looms over it.

Let me tell you about the amazing facilities they have here. Everything is kept in perfect condition. They have a cozy coffee shop where you can grab a cup of joe, a play area for the kids to have fun, and not one, but two pools! One is exclusively for campers, while the other is for day visitors.

Speaking of camping, they really have you covered. There are two options for ablution facilities – outdoor showers (these are great for when the mountain bike events are in full swing) and indoor bathrooms. So no matter what your preference is, you’ll be taken care of.

And let’s not forget about the braai spots. Plenty of them to choose from! You can enjoy a delicious braai while taking in the breathtaking scenery. Plus, they have electrical points available, so you don’t have to worry about your devices running out of battery.

Mankele is truly a hidden gem that I can’t wait to explore more. The stunning natural surroundings and top-notch facilities make it a paradise for camping enthusiasts like me. If you’re looking for an unforgettable outdoor adventure, this is the place to be.

Let’s Get Busy!

Mankele isn’t just for mountain bikers and trail runners. They offer a whole range of exciting activities for families. You can try your hand at paintball, tackle an awesome obstacle course, soar through the air on the kids’ zipline, or even go river rafting. Don’t worry, the river is calm enough for everyone to enjoy, not just extreme sports enthusiasts. And if you don’t have your own bike, no problem! You can easily rent one. But if you’re feeling more laid-back, you can relax by the pool, go fishing, or take a refreshing dip in the slightly murky but still fun river.

If you’re interested in visiting Mankele, you can contact them at 078 801 0453 or visit their website at mankele.co.za.

6. Calling All Hikers and Dog Walkers

Discover Elangeni Holiday Resort

7 Waterside campsites in Mpumalanga_1

When I take my camping pooches, Ben and Bart, to Elangeni, they always have a blast exploring the site. There’s never a dull moment, and there’s always something exciting happening.

Wow, this place has been around for 34 years! Located in the Elands River valley, between Waterval Boven and Nelspruit, it’s absolutely stunning. The grounds are adorned with these enormous trees that give the whole place a magical feel.

Elangeni is all about school camps and team building, so it’s no surprise that it gets booked up quickly during the December holidays. Plus, it’s conveniently located right next to the N4, which makes it the perfect pit stop if you’re traveling between Joburg and Kruger Park.

Now, I have to be honest with you. You can hear the traffic from the campsite, but trust me, it’s not as bad as it sounds. After a while, it just becomes part of the background noise, blending in with the soothing rush of the river. And at night, everything quiets down, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

If you’re lucky enough to nab one of the stands by the riverside, you’ll be in for a treat. However, there’s a little slope covered in grass that might obstruct your view of the water. Don’t worry, though – it’s there to keep the little ones safe while they’re camping with you.

The Elands River, coming all the way down from the Drakensberg escarpment, is quite a sight. It’s a murky brown color, and it’s deep enough to take a swim. But let me be real with you, my friend – it’s not the safest idea. There are some branches and reeds that could pose a hazard, so you might want to think twice about jumping in.

When you visit the campgrounds, you’ll be greeted with lush, thick grass that’s perfect for picnics and lounging. The campsites nearest to the water are also conveniently located near the facilities, which may be simple, but are always clean and tidy. This is where you’ll find the laundry, scullery, jungle gym, and trampolines. Plus, there are braais, water taps nearby, and shared electricity outlets. But the real gem is the sparkling-blue swimming pool, situated just a stone’s throw away from the river, offering breathtaking views of the hills adorned with aloe plants that this area is famous for.

Now, let’s talk about all the fun activities you can do here!

You absolutely can’t miss out on the river tubing experience or the thrilling zipline that zooms over the river to an exciting obstacle course. And one activity that’s a must-do is the overnight hiking trail, a challenging 25-kilometer trek to the Sonbesie hut nestled in the mountains. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the sight of a river and natural pools. On your descent, you’ll pass by two magnificent waterfalls that will leave you in awe.

Elands River Camping

• Located at the scenic Elands River

• Offers 50 spacious camping spots, including 15 near the water

• Affordable rates at R135 per campsite, accommodating up to six people

• Additional charge of R60 per person, and dogs are allowed at no extra cost

7. Perfect for Exploring the Countryside

Trout Fishing at Elandskloof Trout Farm

7 Waterside campsites in Mpumalanga_1

When I arrived at the dam, it had been dry for months. But luck was on my side that day, as I came just after the summer rains.

I found this hidden gem called Elandskloof nestled in the picturesque hills of the Highlands Meander, just 14km away from Dullstroom. To get there, you’ll take a gravel road, and don’t worry, a fancy 4×4 car isn’t necessary. Just drive cautiously, as there might be a few bumpy spots along the way.

As I approached Elandskloof, the name made perfect sense when I spotted a graceful herd of eland roaming freely. And to my surprise, that was just the beginning of the incredible wildlife I encountered. In addition to being a fishing haven, this farm is a sanctuary for various animals like antelope, zebra, wildebeest, fallow deer, and countless more.

Elandskloof holds a special place in the Combrink family’s heart, as they’ve lovingly preserved it for seven generations. One of the main draws here is the presence of 11 trout dams, perfect for those who enjoy the art of fishing. Some of the facilities might need a little care, but trust me, there’s no shortage of things to do and see.

Once you’ve settled in, you’ll find an indoor heated pool and jacuzzi, a fantastic spot to unwind and relax. If you’re bringing little ones along, they’ll have a blast at the farmyard play area designed just for them. And if you’re a bird lover like me, get ready to be amazed. Over 200 different bird species have been recorded on the farm, including the stunning blue, crowned, and wattled cranes who grace us with their presence every spring.

Hey there! Let me tell you all about this amazing campsite I stayed at. It’s called {KNOWN} and it’s such a fantastic place! The campsite and the ablution blocks are spread out all over the farm, giving you plenty of options for where to set up camp. They even have these cool thatched roofs scattered around for some extra shade, but those cost a little extra.

We set up our tent close to the swimming pool, which was super convenient. Our site had everything we needed: a portable braai for cooking up delicious meals, a power point nearby to charge our devices (because let’s face it, who can live without their phone these days?), and a water tap for easy access. The best part was the thick green grass under our feet, it was so soft and comfy!

Now, when it comes to activities, this place has got it all. Besides fly fishing (which is a must-try if you ask me), they have gravel roads that are perfect for mountain biking or off-road motorbiking. How cool is that? If you’re into horse riding, they’ve got you covered with some epic rides. For the little ones, they even have pony rides! And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can go on a game drive on the estate. I heard it’s an incredible experience that you wouldn’t want to miss. Oh, and make sure to ask the staff about the short hike to the waterfall. It’s not marked, but they’ll point you in the right direction.

So, if you’re looking for a spot to relax, have fun, and connect with nature, {KNOWN} is the place to be. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

Trout Fishing Paradise

If you’re into trout fishing, I’ve got some great news for you! We’ve got 11 trout dams and one overflow dam here that are perfect for snagging those elusive fish. And if you’re looking for a place to stay, we’ve got 100 stands available, with 8 spots right next to the dams. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Now, let’s talk about the cost. It’s only R90 per person, and if you want to bring your furry friend along, it’s just an extra R30 for dogs. We also have some thatch-roofed stands available for a little extra comfort, ranging from R60 to R200 per night. Oh, and here’s a tip: if you arrive after 2pm, you only start paying from the next day. Pretty sweet, right?

So, whether you’re an experienced angler or just looking to try your hand at trout fishing, this is the place to be. And don’t forget, we’re not just about fishing. We offer a serene environment, beautiful scenery, and a chance to relax and recharge. It’s the perfect getaway for anyone seeking a bit of nature’s tranquility.
