Discover 7 Amazing Picnic Spots near Cape Town

Looking for the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunny days around Cape Town? Whether you prefer hidden beaches, nature reserves, or even a charming wine estate, these picnic spots near Cape Town offer a little something for everyone.

Let me share with you 7 incredible spots you should definitely check out.

1. Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, Franschhoek

Imagine yourself at Breakfast Rock, admiring the breathtaking view of Theewaterskloof Dam in the distance. The beauty of Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve will leave you speechless.

One morning, I set out on a little adventure in Franschhoek village. Before starting my journey, I stopped by the Pick n Pay to grab some freshly baked baguettes and other goodies. The bread was still warm in my hands as I turned onto the gravel road that led to Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve at the top of the Franschhoek Pass.

When I arrived, I was greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff. They were so enthusiastic about the reserve that I couldn’t help but feel excited too. I decided to embark on the Breakfast Rock Trail, which they assured me was a moderate 30-minute hike. Even though the trail had a few steep parts, it was definitely doable, especially since I had a picnic basket with me. In fact, there are 30 kilometers of well-maintained trails to explore here!

As I made my way through the trail, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the beautiful fynbos (a type of vegetation). The reserve offers breathtaking 360-degree views, and its springs provide drinking water to the whole of Franschhoek. It’s truly a place where nature thrives and regenerates.

After my hike, I headed back to the hut where I started. It’s open from 8 am to 5 pm, so you have plenty of time to explore the reserve. If you’re interested in a delicious meal, wine tastings, picnics, or even a spa experience, you can reach out to the reserve at +27 21 876 2770.

Now, let me take you to another exciting day camp called Sparks Bay Day Camp in Kogel Bay. Here’s what you need to know about it:

7 great spots to picnic in Cape Town

Get ready for an adventure to a hidden gem located between Gordon’s Bay and Pringle Bay! Don’t let the bumpy road or the presence of baboons and litter discourage you from visiting this fantastic picnic spot. Once you arrive, the mesmerizing view of False Bay will capture your heart. Welcome to Sparks Bay, a captivating section of Kogel Bay Beach, nestled within the picturesque Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

As you venture beyond the parking area, you’ll discover a lush lawn embraced by shrubs and a rocky coastline that gracefully meets the rolling tides. Choose one of the inviting picnic tables or lay out a blanket on the grass to enjoy your feast. Just remember, there’s no shade, so it’s essential to have a hat and sunscreen to stay protected. While this spot is a popular destination, weekdays offer a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Embrace the opportunity to try your luck at fishing from the rocks or take a refreshing dip in the nearby tidal pool. Oh, and don’t worry, there are restroom facilities available, but remember to bring your toilet paper just in case. Keep an eye out during August and September, as Southern right whales visit these waters, offering a magnificent sight.

3. Oudekraal Beach, Atlantic Seaboard

Imagine a place where the water sparkles like a precious gem, the sand is as pure as freshly fallen snow, and mighty boulders stand guard, creating a safe haven for swimming and relaxation. Just remember to bring a picnic basket and a big umbrella for shade. Oh, and leave the alcoholic beverages and furry friends at home – they are not allowed on the beach. You can park your car just a few steps away, ensuring convenience and ease of access. Oudekraal Beach is nestled within Table Mountain National Park, nestled between Bakoven and Llandudno on the enchanting ‘sunset coast.’ Sadly, the gates close at 6 pm, so a romantic sunset picnic will have to wait for another day. However, you can enjoy this stunning beach from 8 am onwards.

You may have heard of this estate for its famous wine, exciting mountain bike trails, and an excellent restaurant called The Pool Room. But did you know that they also offer incredible picnics? These picnics are unlike any other, as they provide a peaceful and spacious experience.

Unlike the restaurant, where you share space with others, the picnics take place on a serene lawn. Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by tall trees, their branches swaying in the wind. It’s a mesmerizing sight, like a group of giraffes gracefully standing around a waterhole. Trust me; it’s a view that will leave you in awe.

If you’re tired of sitting on hard surfaces during picnics, you’re in for a treat. The estate has placed plush loungers under the shade of the trees, providing a unique and comfortable picnic experience. Say goodbye to sore knees and uncomfortable bums!

Now, let’s talk about the food. The picnic spread is absolutely delightful. It includes a variety of cured meats, cheeses, pates, preserves, and bread. To satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s also a rich and indulgent brownie. Keep in mind that wine isn’t included, but the staff highly recommends enjoying a bottle alongside your picnic. They have a fantastic selection starting from R140.

These picturesque picnics are available daily from 12 pm, but it’s essential to make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance. To secure your spot, just give them a call at 0218594111.

5. Miller Point Caravan Park, Simon’s Town

Hey there! If you’re tired of swimming in waves that turn you into a White Walker, I’ve got just the spot for you. Take a drive on the main road towards Cape Point, and you’ll find Miller Point Caravan Park, a hidden gem. Trust me, autumn is the perfect time to enjoy the beach and have a picnic.

What makes Miller’s Point Caravan Park so amazing is that it’s not too crowded. It’s far away from the city, so you’ll need a car to get there. Plus, they have a guard who only lets people in if the park isn’t fully booked. So, give them a call beforehand to make sure you’ll have a spot.

When you arrive, park your car and take a stroll down the paved road. Once you reach the stairs that lead to the shoreline, go left. There, you’ll find a grassy area with sporadic trees providing some shade. It’s a good idea to bring your own shade, just in case. If you continue straight ahead, you’ll discover a charming little beach. It’s safe for children to swim there, as it’s well-protected. But if you want to uncover a hidden treasure, head to the right. Just before a wooden boardwalk, nestled among some rocks, you’ll find another lovely little beach. After spending some time by the sea, treat yourself to a refreshing cocktail at the Black Marlin restaurant. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the view. The restaurant is open from 8 am to 6 pm.

6. Beta Beach, Bakoven

Beta Beach is a small, quiet spot in Cape Town that I absolutely love. It’s tucked away behind a couple of bungalows, just beyond Camps Bay. What sets this beach apart is its peacefulness. You might easily miss the two ways to access it if you’re not familiar with the area. Personally, I always take the stairs that lead down to the beach from Beta Road, which you can find off Victoria Road. Another option is to park on Beta Close.

This beach is perfect if you’re looking for some peace and quiet. You can relax, take a swim in the rock pools, and have a picnic. There are more rocks than sand, so make sure to bring pillows for comfort. If it’s a windy day, the boulders will shield you from the gusts. You can also bring your furry friend along, as dogs are welcome here. And be prepared, because Beta Beach is known for being a clothing-optional beach. At sunset, you’ll have a front-row seat to nature’s beauty.

Now, let’s move on to another amazing spot: Mont Rochelle Wine Estate in Franschhoek.

When you visit Mont Rochelle, you’ll get to experience the delightful picnics prepared by the talented chefs at the on-site Country Kitchen. These picnics are truly remarkable, reflecting the farm’s connection to Richard Branson. Every basket is filled to the brim with an incredible variety of flavors and generous portions.

The Miko Basket, in particular, is a true feast for the senses. You’ll find a delectable selection of local cheeses, exquisite preserves, mouthwatering haddock fish cakes, flavorful charcuterie, succulent harissa-spiced chicken, crispy zucchini fritters, refreshing salads, and irresistible desserts.

Enjoy your picnic on the shaded lawns surrounding the Country Kitchen. Here, you can also engage in some friendly competition with games like boules court, Jenga blocks, and croquet. While you relax and indulge in your picnic, don’t forget to take in the breathtaking views of vast fields and the enchanting Franschhoek valley – a true feast for the eyes.

If the weather isn’t cooperating, don’t worry! There are alternative picnic areas available, such as the dam or the glassed venue outside Miko Restaurant. These options ensure that rainy weather won’t dampen your picnic experience.
