5 Trendy Suburbs in South Africa That You Need to Visit
Hey there! I’m here to give you the lowdown on the hippest neighborhoods in South Africa, straight from the locals themselves.
Get ready to dive into the vibrant scenes of Cape Town, Joburg, and Durban. I’ll show you where all the cool kids hang out, the best places to grab a bite, where to shop till you drop, and of course, where to get your caffeine fix.
1. Kloof, Durban
Let’s start our adventure in the tranquil haven of Kloof, located in KZN’s capital. This place is famous for its old train station and the incredible train trips it offers. To give us an insider’s tour, I reached out to Ashley Peter, a dedicated railway enthusiast from Umngeni Steam Railway.
Get a drink
Come on down to Stokers Arms, a really cool hangout spot located in the historical train station that was built in 1912. This place is known for its awesome collection of craft beers, so it’s a favorite among members of USR. And guess what? The food here is delicious and won’t break the bank. You’ve got to try it! You can find Stokers Arms on Old Main Road, and you can reach them at 0317646706.
Delicious food
If you’re looking for a fantastic meal, look no further than Bellevue Cafe. This place is totally modern and family-friendly, so it’s great for everyone. The chef here, Chris Black, is really famous for making consistently amazing dishes. Seriously, the pasta is out of this world, and I can never resist their mouthwatering liquid-centered chocolate puddings. I’m drooling just thinking about it! You can find Bellevue Cafe at 5 Bellevue Road, and their phone number is 0317172780.
Tina’s Hotel, which used to be called the Beryldene back in the 1940s, is a super cozy place to hang out. They’ve got a really warm and inviting bar where you can relax and have a good time. You know what else they have? A small theater! It’s an extension of the Rhumbelow theater in Umbilo. They often have local musicians and comedians performing, and it’s always a blast. I love going there and having a great time. Tina’s Hotel is located at 14 Beryldene Road, and their phone number is 0317647843.

Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome place called Makaranga Lodge. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind spot with an extraordinary blend of Zimbabwean stone art and Italian sculptures. And get this – it’s all set within a magnificent garden!
But that’s not all! Every now and then, they also host incredible music concerts right here. How cool is that?
If you’re interested in visiting, you can find them at 1 Igwababa Road. And if you need to get in touch, just give them a call at 0317646616. They’ll be more than happy to assist you.
Now, let me introduce you to another wonderful place called Krantzkloof Reserve. This place is absolutely breathtaking! Not only can you enjoy lovely picnic sites, but they also offer guided nature trails that’ll take your breath away.
Just imagine walking along those trails, surrounded by the beauty of nature. And to top it all off, you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring views across Kloof Gorge. It’s truly a sight to behold.
If you’re interested in visiting Krantzkloof Reserve, you can find them at 152 Kloof Falls Road. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
Ready for an Adventure?
Hey there! Have you ever heard of the Umgeni Steam Railway? It’s become one of Durban’s favorite family attractions! Every last Sunday of the month (and on special weekends), you can hop on a real, old-fashioned steam train and go on a 50km round trip from Kloof Station to Inchanga. The train is pulled by a vintage 1938 Class 19D locomotive and has wooden carriages from the same time period.
When we arrive in Inchanga, there’s so much to do! You can explore the craft market, relax in shady picnic areas, and even enjoy fun activities designed just for kids. And if you’re a fan of model trains, you’re in luck because there’s a whole display at the station!
Oh, and don’t forget to check out the old Station Master’s House. It’s a historic building dating back to 1895, and now it’s been transformed into a museum. How cool is that?
To secure your spot on the train, just give them a call at 0823536003 and make a booking. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on this amazing experience!
Let me give you the inside scoop…
I’m Ashley Peter, and I’ve been a proud member of USR since its inception 35 years ago. As a dedicated volunteer, I oversee all train operations and often take on the role of train guard. You’ll most likely spot me enthusiastically shouting “all aboard,” blowing whistles, and waving flags.
Durban is truly a remarkable city, but sometimes the humidity can become a bit overwhelming. That’s when I recommend taking a short drive up to Kloof. Here, the air is refreshingly dry. Kloof is a peaceful, tree-filled suburb, free from any industrial hustle and bustle. It’s surrounded by pristine native bush and forest, providing a tranquil escape. When you look towards the north, you’ll be captivated by breathtaking views of the nearby gorge. And when you cast your eyes to the east, you’ll be greeted by a stunning panoramic vista of the city and the sparkling ocean beneath.
That’s what I love about Kloof – its serene beauty and idyllic setting. It’s the perfect retreat when you need a break from the city’s clamor and humidity.
2. Linden, Johannesburg
Welcome to one of the oldest suburbs in the city, nestled below Northcliff! It may surprise you, but this neighborhood has recently become quite lively and exciting. As a store owner, I’m thrilled to give you a local’s tour of this vibrant area.

Here’s a little secret for you.
I used to sell vinyl records from my house in Westdene, but when I saw a shop opening at Linden Place, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. It’s been five years since I opened Record Mad, and let me tell you, Linden has transformed in a really positive way during that time. Despite its suburban charm and authenticity remaining intact, the neighborhood has undergone quite the evolution, and I love it.
Just take a stroll down Fourth Avenue, and you’ll see what I mean. The variety of shops in Linden is incredible. You’ve got everything from old lady dress shops to the best biltong in Joburg at Rembrandt Butcher. There’s even a tattoo parlor if that’s your thing. And let’s not forget about the cool bookshop, Books Galore. Plus, there’s one of the best indoor pools in Joburg and plenty of great coffee shops and eateries. Linden truly has something for everyone.
But what really sets Joburg apart is its beauty. It’s a city that often goes unrecognized for its stunning sights. From lush parks to bustling city streets, the contrasts are mesmerizing. And the people here are just as fascinating. They’re friendly, interesting, and dare I say, a little bit crazy. But that’s what makes Joburg so special – it’s a city that’s full of life.
If you ever find yourself in the area, be sure to swing by Linden Place at 59 Fourth Avenue. You can reach us at 0834195912. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Old Linden with Chris Schutte (ICS Estate Agency)
When I think of Linden, I can’t help but think of it as a village. Even at my age of 74, I still remember moving here when I was just five years old. Back then, the place was full of farms and smallholdings. Linden was famous all over the country for its peach orchards. It’s amazing how things have changed over the years. The property stands that used to be farmland were divided into three to make room for shops. That’s when my parents started their business, about 65 years ago. Now, two of my children are involved in the family business, and even my grandchild, who is the third generation, goes to the same school I did.
I have so many memories of Linden. One that stands out is our headmaster, Mr. Koos, who would bring his cow onto the rugby field to graze. It was quite a sight to see! Of course, as time went on, Linden began to develop. Shopping centers were built, more restaurants popped up, and more houses were constructed. But even with all these changes, Linden still retains its charm. It’s a wonderful area that doesn’t feel like a big city.
3. South End, Port Elizabeth

There are so many interesting places to explore in District Six. From trendy cafes to unique shops, there’s always something new and exciting just around the corner.

But that’s not all! Victoria Park is a hub of activity. It hosts weddings, live music shows, and vibrant summer picnics. It’s a place where memories are made and joy is shared.

I have a great story to share with you! It’s about the Bridge Street Brewery, a craft brewery started by Gary Erasmus and Lex Mitchell. They are famous for their Knysna brewery, and when they opened the first craft brewery in Port Elizabeth, we were all so proud. I’ve been living in South End, where the brewery is located, for most of my life, and I’ve witnessed the incredible changes that have happened since Bridge Street Brewery opened its doors.
The transformation of this area has been remarkable. It’s like a whole new world has opened up, with new businesses and events popping up all the time. The heart of this change lies in Brickmaker’s Kloof, where our brewery is nestled. In this beautiful Baakens Valley, exciting events like the Inner City Enduro and the Valley Bash are held every year. I can’t wait to see how much bigger and better they will become in the future.
If you’re looking for a great spot to enjoy some tasty brews, Bridge Street Brewery is the place to be. It’s a hidden gem that combines fantastic beer with a stunning location. Hi there! I’m so excited to tell you about the Old Tramways Building, a fantastic events venue in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I’m the one in charge of this place, and let me tell you, it’s always bustling with life! We recently gave it a fresh makeover, and now it’s more popular than ever.
One of the highlights here is The Valley Market. It happens on the first Saturday of every month, and let me tell you, it’s quite a spectacle! People from all walks of life come together to enjoy great food, live music, and a whole lot of fun. And here’s the best part: the R10 entry fee goes to charity. So, while you’re having a blast, you’re also making a positive impact on the community. It doesn’t get better than that!
South End, the neighborhood where the Old Tramways Building is located, has a fascinating history. Once upon a time, it was a vibrant and diverse community. People from different races, religions, and cultures came together and created something beautiful. But sadly, in 1950, everything changed because of the Group Areas Act. The community was torn apart, and South End lost its glory.
However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, South End is making a comeback. And the Old Tramways Building is at the heart of it all. We’re working hard to bring life back to this incredible neighborhood and create a place where everyone feels welcome.
Another event you don’t want to miss is Food Truck Fridays. It happens every second Friday, and it’s a paradise for food lovers and supporters of local businesses. You can find all sorts of delicious treats like mouthwatering food, trendy clothing, and even hair products! And to make the experience even better, there are fantastic local bands performing live.
Now, let me tell you why I adore Port Elizabeth so much. First and foremost, the people here are incredibly friendly. It’s the kind of place where strangers smile and say hello to each other on the street. It’s heartwarming and makes you feel like you belong.
Then, there are the beaches. Oh, the beaches! They are absolutely breathtaking. The golden sand, the crystal clear water, and the gentle ocean breeze create a perfect setting for relaxation and fun. Whether you want to take a swim, build sandcastles, or simply soak up the sun, you’ll find your happy place on the beaches of Port Elizabeth.
And last but not least, the fact that this place carries the name of Nelson Mandela adds a special touch. Nelson Mandela, a true icon of peace and equality, has left a lasting legacy in South Africa and the world. Being in a city that honors his name is truly inspiring.

When I’m looking to satisfy my craving for Greek food, I always turn to Mykonos Taverna. Not only do they serve delicious dishes, but on the last Saturday of every month, they even have dancing and plate breaking! You can find them at 343 Main Road, and their telephone number is 0214392106. Another favorite of mine is the newly opened Nonna Lina. Their pizzas are all incredibly tasty, and I can’t get enough of their classic tomatello pasta or the artichoke salad. Make sure to pay them a visit at 148 Main Road, or give them a call at 0606123520.
If you’re in the mood for a burger, Jerry’s is the place to go. They’re famous for their mouthwatering burgers, but what locals really love is the vibrant atmosphere of their bar. Stop by and have a drink at 148 Main Road, or give them a ring at 0214331700.

Discover Something Unique
If you’re looking for a great selection of decor, jewelry, clothing, and gifts, both Mash boutique (85 Regent Road, tel 0212861270) and Live, Love & Stuff (67 Regent Road, tel 0214331908) have carefully chosen items that are mostly locally designed and made – something I really appreciate. When it comes to exploring the area, the Mojo Market is a must-visit, with its array of small shops and restaurants to browse through.
Here’s a little secret
Last October, sisters Tasia and Lexi took on the family tradition of making ice cream by opening their own ice cream parlor. Their grandfather, Andreas Spheris, arrived from Greece in 1947 and started making ice cream. I have fond memories of growing up and having ice cream birthday cakes made by my dad, and they were always a hit with my friends. The decision to set up shop in Sea Point was an easy one for the sisters. They love the holiday vibe the place exudes and enjoy seeing the area thrive. There is something for everyone along the main road. Regent Road has a hipster vibe, while The Point Centre is more family-friendly. It’s amazing to witness the bustling activity and to see people exploring the area on foot. And if you’re in the mood for a delicious dessert, you can’t go wrong with a gourmet soft-serve from Dairy Den at 148 Main Road, tel 0764019895.
Experience more with Pam Warrington (MOJO Market)
I’m Pam, and I want to tell you all about the incredible Mojo Market. This place is like no other – a true gem in Cape Town. It all started with Graeme Robinson and Robbie Lessem, the brilliant minds behind the Mojo Hotel. They had this amazing sea-facing property and decided to turn it into something special – a market that celebrates creativity, delicious food, and locally designed goods.
When I visit the market, my first stop is always the Bagel & Coffee Company. Every single day, I treat myself to their large flat white. Trust me, it’s the perfect way to start the day. The baristas here are a friendly bunch, and the best part? The Wi-Fi is free! So I can catch up on my emails or browse the web while enjoying my coffee.
Now, let’s talk ice cream. I have a weakness for it, and Baskin Robbins at Mojo Market knows exactly how to satisfy my cravings. Their pralines and cream ice cream is out of this world. It’s like a party in your mouth, with little bursts of flavor that make you feel like you’re floating on a cloud.
But wait, there’s more! Mojo Market isn’t just about coffee and ice cream. They’ve got an amazing bar where you can enjoy a tasty cocktail. Personally, I love sipping on a strawberry daiquiri while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. And if you’re a craft beer lover, don’t worry – they’ve got you covered too.
One of the things I really appreciate about Mojo Market is the space. It’s never overcrowded, and I always manage to find a cozy seat. Plus, they have live music every single night! So you get to enjoy great tunes while taking in the breathtaking sea views. It truly is an experience like no other.
So the next time you’re in Cape Town, don’t miss out on visiting Mojo Market. Trust me, you won’t regret it. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast, an ice cream lover, or just want to have a great time, this place has it all. Come and see for yourself!

Discover the highlight
The Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) opened its doors on September 22nd. I have to tell you, this place is absolutely mind-blowing! It stretches out over nine floors with more than 100 galleries showcasing the most cutting-edge artworks you can imagine. From mind-bending technology to mesmerizing moving images and live body art performances, there’s never been anything like it in Africa.
I have to admit, the building itself is a true marvel. Back in the day, it was even the tallest building in South Africa! Can you believe it? It was constructed way back in 1921 and spans a massive 9,500 square meters. But what’s really fascinating is that this incredible museum was actually carved out of 116 vertical tubes. Just picture that for a moment!
The whole idea of transforming an old, abandoned concrete grain silo into a brand new public space was, well, kind of strange. But you know what? It’s exactly that weirdness that makes this place so captivating. The creative minds behind it, like the ingenious designer Thomas Heatherwick, have truly brought something unique to life.
If you’re wondering about the price of admission, don’t worry. It’s not going to break the bank. It’s only R180 per person. And guess what? If you visit on a Wednesday morning, you can even get in for free! Yup, that’s right, FREE. And for the kiddos out there, entry is always free for them. Such a great opportunity to introduce them to the world of art and culture.
But you know what’s even better? Becoming a member. For just R250, you can get free admission to the museum for an entire year. Now that’s a sweet deal! Plus, there are some extra perks and benefits that come with membership. So why not take advantage of it?
