Discover the Wonders of Nambiti Game Reserve
When I imagine the wilderness in KwaZulu-Natal, my mind wanders to the vast landscapes of iSimangaliso, Phinda, and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi in the north. Little did I know about a hidden gem nestled in the heart of central Natal—a place I’ve often breezed through on my yearly journey from Johannesburg to Durban—until my recent visit to Nambiti Game Reserve.
As I took the exit towards Ladysmith, a town I had never explored before, I couldn’t anticipate what awaited me. Located just a short drive away from the bustling city, Nambiti unveiled itself as a breathtaking savanna, providing the perfect escape from the monotonous highways of Joburg.
I created the private reserve 12 years ago by purchasing several cattle and maize farms. It’s the only reserve in the area where you can see the Big Five animals, and it’s becoming more and more popular. The reserve is conveniently located near Durban and Johannesburg, making it a great destination for weekend getaways. What’s more, it’s malaria-free and offers various types of accommodation to suit your needs. We’re also working on expanding our animal population, so you’ll have the chance to see a diverse range of wildlife.
When I was in Cape Town during the rainy, gray mid-winter, I craved a sunny escape. Nambiti turned out to be the perfect solution. Even though the nights and early mornings were cold, the days were wonderfully sunny and warm. I might even have gotten a slight tan from our game drives! There was something magical about being immersed in the ochre and biscuit-colored winter bush. I loved waking up before dawn, bundled up in blankets and holding onto hot water bottles, to go on a game drive. Lunchtime was a treat, as we sat on a sunny lodge deck and watched elephants come to drink from the waterhole nearby. And there’s nothing like sipping a G&T while watching the sun set. The best part was being just a few meters away from a family of rhinos and a herd of wildebeest. And who can forget sitting around a bonfire, eating pap and savoring the taste of Amarula?
Let me share with you five compelling reasons why you should consider visiting this emerging reserve:
1. Biodiversity
The reserve I visited spans 11,000 hectares, which is equivalent to 22,000 acres. What’s fascinating about this place is that it has three distinct ecological regions: savanna, bushveld, and riverine forest. This unique feature allows for a wide range of wildlife to thrive here.
In fact, we got a glimpse of the famous Big Five during our short expedition. And that’s not all! The reserve is home to over 30 other species, including cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, hippos, zebras, and many more. The avian enthusiasts among us were thrilled to spot over 280 species of birds, like the majestic secretary bird, graceful blue cranes, and impressive martial eagles.
But it’s not just the wildlife that makes this reserve special – the landscape is equally captivating. Explore the cascading waterfalls, tranquil rock pools, and serene dams. The rolling savanna, thornveld, ravine bush, and acacia trees all come together to create a truly breathtaking experience. And let’s not forget the vast grasslands that stretch as far as the eye can see.
2. An Engaged Community
In 2009, something incredible happened. A dispute over land ownership was resolved, allowing the Zulu Senzo’kuhle Nkos’unodada community to establish the Nambiti Game Reserve. This special place is now leased by the Nambiti Game Reserve company, which is owned by the community and the shareholders who own the lodge sites within the reserve.
What’s even more amazing is that the local community is heavily involved in the reserve. Many of them work there, and since its establishment, more than 100 jobs have been created. It’s truly a team effort, with everyone working together to make a positive impact.
One of the most remarkable things about this partnership is the absence of poaching. Thanks to the involvement of the community, the reserve remains protected and secure. They have a deep connection to this land and are dedicated to its conservation.
Now, let’s explore the Nambiti Game Reserve and all the incredible things it has to offer. Welcome to Bush ‘n Battlefields!
In the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, lies Nambiti Game Reserve. It’s more than just a wildlife sanctuary – it’s a gateway to the fascinating tales of South Africa’s past. You see, this special place is not only a natural paradise, but it’s also home to the historic battlefields of the Anglo-Boer and Anglo-Zulu wars. It’s a unique opportunity to delve into the events that shaped this land.
As I arrive at the entrance of Nambiti Game Reserve, I’m reminded of the Battle of Elandslaagte, fought right here in 1899. The remnants of that fierce clash are still visible, with British and Boer graves dotting the landscape. There’s even an old military hospital that stands as a haunting reminder of the past.
And just an hour’s drive away, you’ll find the famous battlefields of Rorke’s Drift (1879) and Isandlwana (1879). These sites are where legends were born and history was written in blood. The tour guides at Nambiti Lodge can take you there, sharing the gripping stories that bring these battles to life. Trust me, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
4. It’s close to Joburg AND Durban
Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome reserve that I know. It’s super convenient to get to – just four hours from Johannesburg and three hours from Durban. That means you can leave the big city life behind on a Friday afternoon and head to the bush in time for some evening relaxation and beautiful sunsets.
Plus, this reserve is only an hour away from the stunning Drakensberg mountains. That means you can make it your home base and go on day trips to the mountains for all sorts of exciting activities. You can try out hiking, quad biking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, 4X4 trails, mountain biking, horse riding, fly fishing, and even canopy tours. There’s something for everyone!
5. Playful cheetahs
Although I didn’t see any cheetahs when I went to Nambiti, people often see them at the reserve. But if you really want to interact with cheetahs, I recommend visiting the Le Sueur Cheetah Project. They have adult cheetahs, cheetah cubs, leopards, cervals, and even a friendly meerkat named Zulu. You can learn more about the project at www.cheetahinteraction.com.
