My Top 5 Picks for Places to Stay in Zululand

Zululand holds a special place in my heart. It’s a beautiful part of KwaZulu-Natal that has fueled my passion for wildlife. While I haven’t had the chance to visit every game reserve or lodge in Zululand, I wanted to share my top five favorite camps and lodges. These are the places that have made a lasting impression on me whenever I’ve had the opportunity to explore this incredible region, which I’m lucky enough to call home.

1. Cape Vidal, iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Cape Vidal is a stunning bay located on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. While it’s primarily known for its fishing and beautiful beaches, the reserve is also teeming with a diverse range of wildlife.

Back in 2008, I heard this amazing story about a leopard kill in the reserve, and wow, did it ever make me want to go there! It shot to the very top of my must-visit places. So, without wasting any time, my group of crazy-about-the-bush buddies and I set off on an adventure to find this elusive creature. And you know what? We hit the jackpot not just once, but multiple times! This place is like a leopard paradise, seriously.

When it comes to the best spot in Zululand to see leopards, this place takes the cake. Trust me, it’s the ultimate.

My go-to accommodation choice is usually the Group Cabins because they’re super affordable and comfy. But if you’re after something a bit more fancy, the Log Cabins near the beach are a great option. Of course, if you prefer being out in the wild, they have campsites available too. And the best part? All the spots have electrical points and most are nicely shaded. So you’ll be sorted, no doubt about it.

When you first arrive at the park, you’ll enter from St Lucia. This is an important starting point because it’s where you’ll need to gather all your supplies. Make sure you bring enough food and drinks, as well as filling up your fuel tank. Keep in mind that the shop in Cape Vidal is quite small and doesn’t offer much, apart from ice cream and cold drinks. So it’s best to stock up in St Lucia before heading into the reserve.

Cape Vidal is a well-known destination and can get quite busy. If all the accommodations are fully booked, you can always try to find a place to stay in St Lucia instead. It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan just in case.

When it comes to Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, Mpila Camp is a standout choice. It’s an unfenced camp, which adds an extra level of excitement to your stay. The park itself is rugged and wild, which I find really appealing. It’s full of incredible wildlife and is a paradise for bird enthusiasts.

One thing to keep in mind during your stay is that hyenas often wander through the camp at night, searching for leftovers from the braai. It’s important not to feed them, as this can ultimately lead to their demise. Hyenas are dangerous animals, so it’s essential to stay alert and avoid approaching them at all costs.

The chalets at Mpila Camp are self-catering and come with their own private en-suite bathrooms. Each chalet also has a lovely veranda where you can relax and soak in the atmosphere. If you prefer a different experience, there are also safari tents available. These tents offer a comfortable stay and include kitchen facilities and bathrooms. Unfortunately, there are no campsites for those who prefer to pitch a tent.

If you need fuel, there is some available, but the shop doesn’t have a lot. Unfortunately, there aren’t any big food stores nearby, so make sure to buy everything you need before you get to the park.

If you’re looking for a unique and luxurious experience in Hluhluwe Umfolozi, then Nselweni Bush Lodge at Mpila Camp is the perfect choice for you.

One of the things that sets Nselweni Bush Lodge apart is its commitment to the local community. It was built through a joint venture with members of the surrounding area, so when you stay here, you’re not just enjoying a fantastic retreat, you’re also helping to uplift the local community.

The lodge itself is beautifully decorated, with each unit featuring its own kitchen, bathroom, and spacious veranda. The highlight of the lodge is its location along the stunning Black uMfolozi River, offering breathtaking views (as long as the grass isn’t too tall).

But be warned: the comfort and luxury of Nselweni Bush Lodge may make it difficult for you to tear yourself away from the tranquility of the bush!

When I think about the Nselweni Bush Lodge, the first thing that comes to mind is the incredible view from the unit. It’s truly breathtaking and makes you feel like you’re in the heart of the wild.

4. Nhlonhlela Bush Lodge, uMkhuze

If you’re looking for a North Coast game reserve that’s worth a visit, you should definitely consider uMkhuze. It’s known for its diverse bird population, with over 450 species to discover. Not only that, but it’s also home to a variety of majestic animals, excluding lions. I’ve had some of my most memorable encounters with wild dogs in this park.

The Nhlonhlela Bush Lodge is where you’ll want to stay if you’re looking for a comfortable and private experience. The lodge consists of four separate bamboo units that can accommodate eight people in total. Each unit is equipped with two single beds, an en suite shower and toilet, and a private veranda. On top of that, there’s a separate kitchen, dining room, and a spacious deck that overlooks a serene dam.

But here’s the best part: the lodge provides a chef who will cook the food that you bring. Imagine sitting on the deck, sipping on your favorite beverage, while the animals gather around the water below. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and embrace nature. And as if that weren’t enough, the cost of your accommodation also includes a daily guided activity. How exciting!

When I first heard about the main camp, Mantuma, I was intrigued. It’s located in a breathtaking setting, surrounded by nature’s wonders. The camp offers everything you need to fuel your adventures, ensuring that you have a memorable experience.

One thing I quickly realized, though, is that the camp’s shop is pretty basic. So, if you’re planning a trip to Mantuma, it’s crucial to take all the food supplies you’ll need with you. The nearest town is quite a distance away, measuring over 20 kilometers.

When it comes to luxury, you can’t go wrong with Phinda Private Game Reserve. They really know how to make their guests feel special. From the lavish accommodations to the delicious meals and guided drives, this place has it all. It’s a Big 5 reserve and, in my opinion, one of the best in Zululand to spot cheetah.

Mountain Lodge, located in Phinda, is perched on top of a small mountain, offering stunning views from every suite. Each suite comes with its own sitting area, beautiful bathroom, and a private veranda complete with a plunge pool and an outdoor shower.
