We are fortunate to have 4.5 hectares of farmland dedicated to our vineyards. The soil in this region is sandy and loamy, providing the perfect foundation for our grapes to flourish. Inside, we found a collection of relics from the farm’s past – old spades and other tools once used on the land. There was even an oak barrel that had been sold to the local Dutch Reformed Church, filled with communion wine. It was fascinating to see these pieces of history.

Marga’s knowledge of the wines and the farm’s history was truly impressive. We were even more amazed to learn that it was only her second day on the job. She had clearly done her research and was passionate about sharing her knowledge with us.

When I stepped into the 260-year-old cellar, the large barn door was open, allowing sunlight to pour in. The rays filtered through the ancient oak tree outside, creating a mesmerizing display. It was the perfect setting to begin our red wine tasting adventure.

Our first wine was the Bosman Pinot Noir. Marga, our seasoned wine expert, described it as “light and fruity, with a hint of tobacco on the nose.” My senses were slightly dulled that day, so I couldn’t fully grasp all the intricate aromas that a true wine connoisseur or my husband with his incredible sense of smell could detect. Nevertheless, I found the Cabernet Sauvignon enjoyable.

However, it was the Twyfeling Cinsaut that truly stole the show. This wine boasted deep plum flavors and a touch of spice, or so they say. It stood out among the rest, showcasing its exceptional quality. I couldn’t resist taking another sip.

In addition to the reds, there was also a remarkable Sauvignon Blanc. Its crispness and unique taste caught my attention. And then there was the Bosman Adama, named after Adama Apollas, one of the farm workers who played a significant role in the Bosman legacy. It was fascinating to learn about the history behind this particular wine.

All in all, the cellar tasting experience was truly unforgettable. Each sip brought a new wave of flavors, and the ambiance of the old cellar added to the charm. Despite my limited expertise, I left with a greater appreciation for the art of winemaking.

We were really excited when we found out that Bosman Family Vineyards puts the money they make from selling wine in Europe towards some amazing initiatives. They have a preschool on their farm, with eight teachers, and they even have a computer lab for high school students. Plus, they provide karate lessons for the children of their farm workers. They’re really committed to making a difference!

In 2008, Bosman Family Vineyards also made a deal with the Adama Workers Trust. This deal gave eligible workers the opportunity to own some of the farm land – a whopping 430 hectares of it! It’s great to see a company that’s dedicated to giving back like this.

As I walked through the farm, I couldn’t help but notice the delightful aroma of guava trees. The fragrance reminded me of my favorite guava fruit roll. It was a sweet and nostalgic moment. The farm’s vineyard was a picturesque sight, with rows of grapevines stretching as far as the eye could see.

The cellar itself was a blend of elegance and modernity. Inside, I was greeted by the sight of French oak barrels, each proudly displaying their origin from different forests in France. On the other side, stainless steel vats stood tall, ready to assist in the winemaking process.

Dunstone Wine Estate is a family-run winery that offers a selection of seven wines. Among them are three reds, three whites, and a rosé. Curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn’t wait to taste these celebrated gems.

With a glass in hand, I eagerly sampled the three 2015 reds. Each had its own unique character, and it was hard to pick a favorite. The Dunstone Merlot and Dunstone Shiraz had both received well-deserved awards. However, there was something about the Shiraz that captivated my palate. It had a robust flavor and a touch of elegance that resonated with me. Surprisingly, the more affordable ‘Stones in the Sun’ Shiraz also left a lasting impression. Not only did it showcase great quality, but it also contributed to a noble cause. The proceeds from this special wine support education for the farm workers’ children. It was heartwarming to know that every sip contributed to a brighter future.

Moving on to Doolhof Wine Estate, located in Bovlei, Wellington. This charming estate offers a unique experience for wine lovers. With breathtaking views and a tranquil setting, it’s the perfect place to unwind and indulge in some exquisite wines. So, if you’re in the area, make sure to pay them a visit and let your taste buds explore the wonders they have to offer.

You’re going to love the tasting room at Doolhof. It’s such a beautiful place! The room has the best view out of all the settings we’ve seen. It’s like a picture-perfect painting. The tasting room sits in a valley, embraced by hills, mountains, and a lush forest. It’s like being in a magical oasis.

The name Doolhof, which means labyrinth in Afrikaans, was given to this estate by the early settlers who were delighted by the many hills and vales they saw. The first owner of Doolhof was Jaques Portier from Flanders. French Huguenot settlers introduced grapes to the area in 1728. Another interesting fact is that Andrew Geddes Bain, the man behind the construction of the Bainskloof Pass, lived on the farm for a while during the project. I guess he saw something special in this place.

I walked into the modern tasting room and settled into a cozy chair made of soft, white ostrich leather. The room was filled with the warm glow of autumn sunshine, and through the large windows, I could see the most vibrant green grass I had seen in the Western Cape in a long time. It was nourished by the gentle flow of the Kromme River on the property.

The winery had a special collection of wines called Legends of the Lybirinth. These wines had intriguing names like Minotaur and Theseus, inspired by Greek mythology. The Theseus wine was named after the Greek god who, according to legend, defeated the minotaur that was trapped in the Cretan Labyrinth. The collection also included the Lady In Red, Lady in White, and Dark Lady. My taste buds were enamored by the rich flavors of the Theseus 2014 and the smoothness of the 2016 Malbec from the signature range.

You have the option to pre-book a lunch at the tasting room or order a picnic in advance. The picnic can be enjoyed at any of the scenic spots along the River Walk, which stretches for kilometers beside the beautiful Kromme River and through the forest. If you prefer walking, there’s a 10km path that takes you through the vineyards. The estate is open every day from 10am to 5pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.

Welcome to Diemersfontein, the home of the famous Coffee Chocolate Pinotage!

Now, I have to say, Diemersfontein Wine Estate may not have the same charm and beauty as the other farms in the area. It’s located outside the Bovlei Valley and Wellington, a bit off the beaten path. But here’s the thing. This place may not be picturesque, but it sure does produce some top-quality wine.

Let me tell you a little secret: Diemersfontein is where the very first chocolate/coffee Pinotage was born. I know, it sounds strange, right? I was a bit skeptical myself at first, especially after a not-so-great experience with a knock-off version. But trust me, this one is the real deal.

But let me tell you, when I met our hostess, Jo-Ann de Vries, she was full of confidence in the product. So, I decided to give it a try. And boy, was I in for a treat! We started off with a 2015 Shiraz and a 2016 Malbec. Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not usually a fan of Malbec, but the Diemersfontein Malbec completely changed my mind. It was outstanding!

After that delightful surprise, we moved on to the Pintoage. First up was the 2016 Carpe Diem Pino’, and let me tell you, it was a revelation. It was paired with biltong, which turned out to be the perfect match. The flavors were so complementary, it was like they were made for each other.

But the pièce de résistance was the Diemersfontein Pinotage “The Original Coffee/Chocolate Pinotage.” Just hearing the name got me excited, and when I tasted it, I was blown away. Paired with a dark chocolate pistachio truffle, it was a match made in heaven. The subtle hints of coffee and chocolate blended perfectly with the rich flavors of the wine. If I were an expert, I would have given it my seal of approval without a doubt.

So, consider me converted. This experience has opened my eyes to the wonders of Diemersfontein wines. If you’re looking for something extraordinary, I highly recommend giving them a try. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Cheers!

After I finished tasting the wine, Jo-Ann pulled out a dark wooden stave and explained how it is prepared. The oak stave is polished to a shine and then the burnt charcoal is carefully removed. Once the stave is ready, it is placed in contact with the Pinotage wine, which brings out those rich flavors of chocolate and coffee.

We also got to taste the Voigner wine, and it was absolutely amazing. We couldn’t resist and immediately bought a bottle, along with the Ovation Merlot. The Ovation is part of the Thokozani brand, which is owned 80% by the cooperative of farm staff. Jo-Ann, who is one of the members, takes great pride in this brand. Interestingly, you can find Thokozani wines at Woolies, as they are considered fairtrade and BEE products. The Merlot, priced at R50 per bottle, offers a great value and makes for a delightful everyday wine. Don’t forget that they are open every day from 10am to 5pm.
