48 hours in Beautiful Greyton

Just a short drive away, a couple of fun songs to sing along to, and not even a full tank of gas – that’s all it takes to leave behind the busy life of Cape Town and enter the relaxed world of Greyton.

48 hours in Glorious Greyton

As I set off from the mother city, the drive to this beautiful destination is both easy and breathtaking. It’s a straight shot along the N2, a route that offers stunning views. I leave behind the hustle and bustle of Somerset West and make my way over Sir Lowry’s Pass, through the picturesque Elgin Valley, and past the turn off to Theewaterskloof Dam in Grabouw. Finally, I arrive at Houw Hoek Pass, and here, the landscape opens up before me, with endless fields stretching as far as the eye can see.

As I continue my journey, I come across windmills, tractors, and farmhouses scattered here and there. And if I’m lucky enough to be traveling between the months of July and September, I’m treated to a mesmerizing sight. The canola fields are in full bloom, painting the landscape in vibrant shades of yellow.

However, I must warn you that it’s easy to miss the turn-off that leads to Genadendal and Greyton. But if you manage to find it, you’ll discover a hidden treasure – a tranquil country village surrounded by lush greenery. In this little paradise, some homes are blessed with streams flowing through their backyards, and horses roam freely along the gravel roads. The people here are warm and friendly, and you won’t find a single traffic light in sight.

When you first arrive at this place, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time. The Victorian architecture and tranquil atmosphere create a nostalgic ambiance. But don’t let the old-world charm fool you – you’ll still find all the modern conveniences you need.

Day 1: Take a stroll

After checking in and getting settled, it’s time to explore the beauty of this town. The best way to do that is by taking a leisurely walk. The town is small enough to navigate on foot, but be warned – you may get sidetracked by the charming side streets along the way. These streets are lined with trees and colorful flowers that adorn the houses.

Each street is a sight to behold on its own, with intricate lace details and a picturesque, movie-like atmosphere.

Did you bring your dogs on this adventure? Walk them down Vlei Street every day. It has wide, green fields on one side, the Riviersonderend mountains not too far away, and a stream at the end of the road where they can cool off before heading back.

You can also bring them along on the Greyton Village Historic Walk. Get a map at the Information Bureau on Main Road to help you on this journey. The walk takes you past the town’s library, though it’s closed on weekends.

You’ll come across St. Andrew’s Anglican Church (028 254 9914), built in 1904, Greyton Lodge (082 376 6667, greytonlodge.co.za) – which has parts of the building from 1882 – and so much more.

When you’re in Greyton, a visit to the Greyton Trading Post (076 259 6299, greyton-trading-post.business.site) is a must if you’re on the hunt for unique antiques. This store is packed with an astonishing array of treasures, and you might find yourself getting lost in the mesmerizing collection as you explore.

If you have a green thumb or are interested in gardening, make sure to stop by the Fiore Garden Centre and Restaurant (028 254 9750, fioregardencentre.com). Walking through the nursery is pure bliss, and you’ll probably be tempted to bring some plants home with you. If you’re worried about your plants surviving the journey, don’t fret! Just order a delicious pizza from the restaurant instead. After all, pizza has a magical way of making everything better.

Now, let’s move on to Day 2, where we’ll experience the enchantment of the local market.

Usually, I like to sleep in on Saturdays after a long week of work. But that doesn’t fly in Greyton. This town is up and bustling early on Saturday mornings, thanks to the Greyton Village Market. It starts at 10 am and goes until noon. And let me tell you, this market is something special. They’ve got all sorts of delicious homemade foods and beautiful crafts that will have your mouth watering and your eyes popping.

Once you’ve made your purchases, find yourself a nice picnic spot nearby to enjoy your goodies. And if you’re up for some outdoor fun, make your way over to the Greyton Mountain Biking Club. You can give them a call at 083 457 0679 for some advice on the best biking trails in the area. If cycling at a leisurely pace is more your style, no worries. You’ll find plenty of places along the main road where you can rent a bicycle. Picture yourself on a cool retro cycle with a cute little basket at the front. It’s the perfect way to explore and take in the charming scenery of Greyton.

When you explore Greyton on a bike, it really builds up your hunger. Even though it’s a small village, there are plenty of places to eat. The Abbey Rose Restaurant (083 262 1244) is one of them. They have a fantastic menu with a wide range of special South African dishes, like kudu pie. They also take classic meals and put a local twist on them, like their chicken curry. The best part is, you can enjoy your food in their beautiful garden. And hey, if you’re thinking of getting married, they can handle that too!

Now, let’s talk about where you can stay. Anna’s Country Accommodation is a great option.

When you arrive at the village square, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time. The charming cottages and Treehouse offer a romantic getaway. Each cottage provides access to a secret garden, where you can enjoy the beauty of nature.

If you’re looking for a touch of nostalgia, the Garden Cottage is perfect. It used to be a stable and is filled with vintage charm, just like the other cottages.

Prices start at R400 per person per night, with a minimum stay of two nights on weekends.
