Being the Photo Editor for Getaway involves a lot of traveling around South Africa. Throughout the year, I’ve had the chance to photograph and write about approximately 150 locations. Among these, a few have left a lasting impression on me, possessing that unique quality that makes me want to go back and share them with loved ones.

Allow me to present my top picks from the places I’ve seen in 2016: the ones that you absolutely need to add to your 2017 destination bucket-list. These gems are scattered all over the country, offering a diverse range of experiences, from lavish lodges for special occasions to simple cottages nestled in the heart of nowhere.

First of all, I want to give a big shoutout to Pippa de Bruyn, our amazing investigator, who never fails to uncover hidden gems during her monthly searches on the charts. (By the way, you can click on her name to check out some of the towns we’ve recently explored and thoroughly assessed.)

The Closest to Gauteng

Hey Gauteng, I gotta say, you’d be so much cooler if you didn’t give me a static shock every time I come by. But, ignoring that, you actually have some breathtaking mountain and bush getaways nearby.
