Being the Photo Editor for Getaway involves a lot of traveling around South Africa. Throughout the year, I’ve had the chance to photograph and write about approximately 150 locations. Among these, a few have left a lasting impression on me, possessing that unique quality that makes me want to go back and share them with loved ones.

Allow me to present my top picks from the places I’ve seen in 2016: the ones that you absolutely need to add to your 2017 destination bucket-list. These gems are scattered all over the country, offering a diverse range of experiences, from lavish lodges for special occasions to simple cottages nestled in the heart of nowhere.

The Closest to Gauteng

Hey Gauteng, I gotta say, you’d be so much cooler if you didn’t give me a static shock every time I come by. But, ignoring that, you actually have some breathtaking mountain and bush getaways nearby.

1. Pezulu Tree House and Game Lodge

Imagine staying in a tree house and being able to witness the wonders of wildlife right from your doorstep. That’s exactly what the Dream Tree House offers. But what sets this unit apart is its unique feature – a bed that can be wheeled out onto the deck, allowing you to sleep under the twinkling stars. It’s a surreal experience that will leave you in awe.

2. Buhala Lodge

During my time at this lodge, I didn’t encounter any South African accents from the guests. However, I highly recommend spending some time here if you have the means. It is an exquisite and lush location, perfect for a romantic evening. I couldn’t resist experiencing it myself after taking this photo.

3. Buffalo Brooke

Location: Mjejane Game Reserve

Imagine a beautiful deck that looks out over the Crocodile River, where you can relax and soak up the stunning views. There’s also a refreshing pool for you to cool off in, and a cozy fireplace to gather around in the evenings. But what really sets this place apart is the awe-inspiring sight of herds of elephants leisurely strolling down to the river for a drink. It’s like living in a wildlife paradise!

4. Ashbourne Lodge

Imagine yourself on a hilltop, surrounded by nature’s beauty – gentle breezes and breathtaking views. You can hear the delightful melodies of birdsong as you look out over a lush wilderness. It’s a tranquil oasis where you can escape the busyness of life, and the hosts make sure you feel completely at ease.

5. The Enchanting Wooly Bugger Farm

Welcome to the charmingly remote Fly-fishing Farm! Nestled 7 kilometers outside of Tonteldoos, this idyllic sanctuary takes its name from a beloved fishing lure. Here, you can escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse yourself in nature’s splendor.

Bring your furry friends along, as they are welcome to join you on leisurely walks through the picturesque surroundings. If you’re a fan of fishing, you’re in luck – try your hand at fly-fishing in the pristine waters. For those seeking adventure, hop into a 4×4 vehicle and explore the breathtaking landscapes from elevated vantage points.

6. Experience the Bush in Glamorous Style

It gets scorching in Hoedspruit. I mean, seriously scorching. I once Googled the temperature and it said it was 37 degrees. And that was at night! So, you can imagine why I was so thrilled to discover this hidden gem called umVangati House. It’s like a cool oasis in the middle of a blazing desert. It’s got air conditioning, plenty of space, and even a BBQ and pool. You’ll be thanking your lucky stars (and your sweat-drenched feet) if you ever find yourself in Hoedspruit!

7. Experience umVangati House

THIS VIEW. This view made me a bit sad that no one was here with me. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited in South Africa. I really want to come back.

8. Bushriver Lodge

The food here was so amazing, in a simple and rustic way, that I even thought about requesting the recipes. Bushriver Lodge offers stunning views of the Olifants River. They have accommodations close to the main lodge, as well as cottages that are a bit further away. These cottages can be your own private space if you come with a group of friends.

Closest to Durban

My old stomping grounds! I have to confess that I’m a little biased when it comes to any place that allows me to visit KZN for a while. But putting that aside, I’ve discovered some truly incredible places this year that I have returned to with my family and on my own. That says it all, doesn’t it? Although I didn’t get the chance to do much coastal travel in Durban this year, I did spend a lot of time exploring the majestic landscapes of the Drakensberg Mountains. And let me tell you, I found a whole new appreciation for the breathtaking views that can be found there.

9. Sungubala Eco Camp

Location: Northern Drakensberg

So, here’s the thing: this place has way more camping sites than you even realize. Privacy might not be the top priority here, but let me tell you, the views are absolutely breathtaking. I stayed in one of those cute little thatched cottages, but I’ve got to admit, next time I come here, I’m totally pitching a tent.

10. Greenfire Lodge

Location: Northern Drakensberg

Wow, wow, wow! I had an incredible experience visiting Greenfire with my mother (she’s in the picture with me), and let me tell you, the views were absolutely breathtaking. I can’t even begin to describe how amazing it was, especially during sunrise and sunset. The whole journey to the base of the mountain range on a 4×4 track was an adventure in itself.

11. Tugela River Lodge

Hey there! Let me tell you about my dog, Tao! We recently went on an amazing adventure to Tugela River Lodge. It’s a fantastic place where you and your family, including your furry friends, can have an unforgettable time exploring the riverside and going on bush walks.

12. Ingwe Cabin

Location: Northern Drakensberg/Olivieshoek Pass

Ah, this charming little wooden cabin is simply delightful. It’s filled with warm memories from the lovely owners, George and Suzette, who are always there to make you feel at home. As soon as you arrive, a scenic 4×4 track leads you to your very own private mountainside retreat. The breathtaking landscape is perfect for leisurely strolls and offers stunning views of wheeling vultures and a tranquil trout dam. And if you’re up for some fun, there’s even a mini-golf course! The best part? You can bring along your furry friends as well! This place is a true haven for anyone seeking an authentic and down-to-earth getaway. I can confidently say that I highly recommend it – this place is a hidden gem!

13. Indigo Fields

Location: Nottingham Road

When I heard all those amazing stories about the spa, meals, and comfort at this place, I couldn’t wait to experience it for myself. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. As soon as I arrived at the lodge, I was greeted by warm and cozy fireplaces that instantly made me feel at home. The winter cold of the Midlands was no match for the welcoming atmosphere.

A Hidden Gem in a Serene Location

The Utshwayelo Lodge is nestled in the breathtaking surroundings of the Kosi River mouth. It’s like stepping into a tranquil paradise, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The peace and serenity of this place are truly unparalleled.

Wow, get ready for an adventure like no other! I’m about to whisk you away to Mozambique, without even leaving the country. How amazing is that? And guess what? It’s all part of this incredible place called iSimangaliso Wetland Park. But hold on, that’s not all. Brace yourself for some serious off-road action because you’ll be doing some mind-blowing 4×4 driving to uncover hidden beaches. And let’s not forget about the snorkeling. Trust me, you’ll be blown away by how fantastic it is!

Oh, and here’s a little tip: don’t forget to bring your passport. Why, you ask? Well, if you have some extra time on your hands, a quick little trip across the border will take you to a place called Ponto do Ouro. Just a heads up though, it can get pretty crowded there during the holiday season. But hey, that just adds to the excitement, right?

15. Berghouse and Cottages

Location: Northern Drakensberg

Vaughn and Chantal have created an amazing place on the hill that offers breathtaking views of the Amphitheatre mountain range. I absolutely love staying in the Phezulu unit, although every unit has its own unique features. One of the highlights is seeing the mini-horses, known as falabellas, happily trotting around the paddocks. They are so adorable and always bring a smile to my face.

If you’re in search of romance, look no further. This place has it all – breathtaking views that stretch as far as the eye can see and complete privacy. Words can’t do justice to the sheer vastness and beauty of these views. You truly have to experience them firsthand to understand.

17. Virginia Farm

My aunt loves to go mountain biking, and she showed me this amazing place (featured in the Dec 2016 issue). It’s located on a sugarcane farm on the side of a mountain, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. If you enjoy hiking, biking, or birdwatching, I highly recommend visiting this spot, even if it’s just for a day.

Closest to Cape Town

Cape Town is lucky to have such easy weekend access to the West Coast, the Cederberg, and the Overberg. It’s like that cool, popular cousin who has it all.

When you stay at the Strandloper, you’ll have access to the best of everything. We offer luxurious five-star accommodation, breathtaking fynbos landscapes, and expansive, pristine beaches.

When you’re in Paternoster, you might believe that the beach is the only place to stay. However, there’s a hidden gem that might make you reconsider. I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious outdoor swing bed at Oystercatcher’s Haven.

Imagine this – an enchanting rooftop oasis, where romance floats on the breeze. The rooftop is adorned with a cozy fireplace, twinkling candles, and magical fairy lights, all set against a backdrop of breathtaking ocean views. It’s like stepping into a dream. And that’s not all. Just below, there’s a delightful pool that holds a special place in my heart. I’ll never forget the morning I woke up to the joyful sounds of splashing. As I peered through the window of my ground-floor room, I was greeted by the sight of three otters frolicking and playing in the moonlit water. It was a mesmerizing display that lasted for what felt like an eternity. I later learned that this playful otter spectacle is a regular occurrence here.

21. The Old Kapteinskloof Guesthouse

Hey there, let me tell you about this amazing cottage I found for women traveling on their own. It’s a hidden gem nestled in an orange grove, and it’s absolutely enchanting. As soon as you step foot inside the old farm cottage, it’s like you’ve traveled back in time. And guess what? The best part is waking up and squeezing fresh oranges to make your own juice in the morning. It’s such a refreshing way to start the day.

Location: Van Rhynsdorp

If you’re looking for an amazing place to take walks and discover rivers and pools in a rugged mountainous setting, then Porcupine Hills is the spot for you.

Located in a craggy landscape, Porcupine Hills offers an ideal environment for outdoor exploration. Whether you’re a nature lover or just looking for a peaceful getaway, this place has it all.

The accommodations may be simple, but they provide everything you need for a comfortable stay. So, if you’re seeking a rustic experience surrounded by stunning natural beauty, Porcupine Hills is the perfect destination for your next adventure.

When I visited this beautiful farm, located within a private nature reserve, I didn’t have much time to fully explore it. However, the glimpse I caught was absolutely captivating, and it immediately made me consider planning a trip back here next year.

A Unique Getaway: Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa

When I stayed at this hotel, the dinner settings in the conservancy area amazed me. The gardens were so beautiful, with trees and flowers scattered throughout the courtyards and walkways between the hotel units.

You won’t believe what a perfect spot this is to relax! Imagine a charming restaurant right around the corner, serving delicious food. The cozy cottages provide utmost comfort, and you can enjoy a leisurely walk up to the picturesque small dam, offering stunning mountain vistas. It’s truly a haven for rejuvenation.

This spacious house is perfect for groups like yours, offering direct access to the picturesque Klein River. And the cherry on top? A sprawling verandah where you can hang your hammock and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.

As I make my way to Bhodi Khaya, a unique sanctuary that combines yoga, art, and spirituality, I am greeted by an unusual sight. The road is lined with baboons and horses, adding a touch of wild beauty to the journey. Surrounded by breathtaking fynbos and majestic mountains, this retreat offers a respite from the chaos of modern life, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the present moment.

28. Discover the Enchantment of the Beach Shack at Koenrust

Hey there! Let me tell you about this amazing place called Thorn and Feather. It’s kind of like a beach shack, but don’t let that fool you. Sure, it may not win any fancy awards for its design, but trust me, the location is absolutely stunning. Picture this: you have to trek down a steep mountain to reach this hidden gem, and when you finally get there, you’re rewarded with a whole stretch of coastline just for yourself. How cool is that?

Vermaaklikheid took me by surprise. I was not prepared for the incredible natural beauty that this area possesses, from its diverse plant life to its fascinating wildlife. Thorn and Feather is a unique and artistic getaway, perfect for a group of people who appreciate the bohemian lifestyle. This charming retreat offers a shabby-chic atmosphere with stunning views of the river below.

30. The Boathouse at Oshoek River Farm

Hey there! Step aboard this extraordinary converted boat shed that’s all cozy and relaxed. It’s the perfect rustic hideaway for two, where you can wake up to stunning river views and enjoy cooking or reading by candlelight.

Discover Port Elizabeth’s Finest

Located in the Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. I’m particularly enchanted by the magnificent Baviaanskloof and Camdeboo area, both of which we will be featuring in 2017.

Let me tell you about my experience with Rob, the owner, who took me for a lovely early-morning stroll along the coastline of Kenton-on-Sea. That walk truly made me appreciate the natural beauty of this place. If you’re looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend their self-catering flats that offer stunning views of the surrounding bush.

All About Sibuya Game Reserve

I went to Sibuya by boat, cruising up the Kariega estuary until I reached either the Bush Camp or Forest Camp. Both stays were so captivating that it made me forget about the nearby town of Kenton-on-Sea. The reserve was absolutely stunning, with its vast expanse of green hills and breathtaking views. The meandering river was a paradise for birdwatching and offered serene sunset cruises that were truly unforgettable.

I’m right on the edge. If you manage to secure one of these amazing units facing the gorge, you’ll be just a few meters away from the steep drop-off. There’s a walkway that goes along the edge of the ravine, complete with lookout points where you can stop and soak in the breathtaking view.

Ah, Silver Birch Cottage, what a dreamy place! Imagine a charming, little two-story wooden cottage with a cozy loft upstairs. And guess what? It even has a stoep outside, where you can enjoy a barbecue while taking in the breathtaking view of the lush forest. Oh, and let’s not forget the lovely short walks you can take to the nearby waterfalls. It’s pure magic!
