We’ll start our journey in Durban and make our way through the stunning Zululand mountains, passing by the lush tropical forests of the Elephant Coast. Our next stop is the mountain kingdom of eSwatini, where you’ll get a taste of its unique culture. Finally, we’ll end up in the wild bush of the Kruger National Park, where you can experience an incredible safari adventure!
Welcome to the Royal Palm Hotel and Apartment!
Today is the first day of your exciting journey, starting in Durban. After enjoying some quality time at the beautiful beach in Mvoti and exploring the fabulous Gateway Gallery of Shopping, it’s time to hit the road. Now, I know you might be thinking, where should I go next?
Well, let me tell you! You can hop on the N2 and head north until you reach the Dodokweni offramp (Bridge No 9). From there, take the R66 which will lead you to the charming town of Eshowe. The drive is pretty easy and takes about 1.5 hours, covering a distance of 140 kilometers.
When you visit Eshowe, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do. One must-visit spot is Fort Nonqayi, where you can explore a weaving and basket museum as well as an art gallery. This place tells the story of King Cetshwayo, who had an interesting relationship with Queen Victoria. Another highlight is the tree-top walkway, which offers a unique opportunity to spot the rare Narina Trogon and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of a tropical sand forest. And don’t miss the George hotel, famous for its Zululand Brewery’s Zulu Blonde beer.
If you’ve never been to Eshowe before, you’re in for a surprise. The heart of Zululand is full of wonders waiting to be discovered. Once you’ve explored Eshowe, you can continue your journey by heading north towards Richards Bay. Along the way, you can book a stay at the BON Hotel Waterfront Richards Bay, located just 85 km away and about an hour’s drive from Eshowe.
Day 2: Today’s journey will be a long one, but you can take your time and make stops along the way if you like. There are several places where you can break your journey, allowing you to fully experience and enjoy this part of the trip.
Hey there! Let me tell you about an exciting trip you can take starting from Richards Bay. The N2 road will lead you on a fantastic adventure. It heads north, almost straight up, passing by some cool places and offering some amazing detours along the way.
Just outside of Richards Bay is Mtubatuba. If you feel like exploring, you can take a little detour to the town of St Lucia. There, you’ll find a crocodile farm where you can learn all about these fascinating creatures. You can also go on estuary tours to see the beautiful natural surroundings. If you’re up for some adrenaline, there are even safari tours and walking safaris available. How cool is that?
Continuing up the N2, you’ll come across Hluhluwe Game Reserve. This place is a game driver’s dream! You might want to consider spending a whole day exploring the reserve and spotting some incredible wildlife. If you’re more interested in the town of Hluhluwe itself, you’ll find private game farms where you can have your own personal safari experience. There are also craft villages to visit and even a safari resort where you can pamper yourself.
So, if you’re ready for an adventure, hop on the N2 road and let the journey begin. You’ll have a blast exploring all the amazing places along the way. Enjoy!
As I traveled along the N2, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the stunning sights that unfolded before me. A stop at Ghost Mountain Inn was a must, where I indulged in a delicious lunch and took a refreshing swim in the summer heat. And let’s not forget Jozini Dam, with the magnificent Elephant Lodge overlooking the serene lake, and the charming Shayamanzi Houseboats. As I gazed out to my right, the majestic Lebombo Mountains stood tall, guiding my way.
Eventually, I arrived at Lavumisa, the border post for Swaziland. The journey took me around 2.5 hours and covered a distance of 195 kilometers. From there, I embarked on a winding tour through the enchanting eSwatini pocket Alps, which never failed to captivate me. Finally, after another 2.5 hours and covering 175 kilometers, I reached my destination – the Mountain View International Hotel in Mbabane.
Now, when it comes to spending a day in eSwatini, let me tell you, it’s absolutely worth it. This incredible place offers a wide range of activities to suit every taste. From exploring vibrant craft bazaars and embarking on thrilling hikes, to going on captivating safaris and taking insightful walking tours, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on the chance to visit Swazi Candles and Ngwenya Glass, where you’ll find exquisite curio shops that showcase the rich artistic heritage of eSwatini.
Day 4: As we bid farewell to the Mountain View Hotel, we can’t help but look back with a tinge of sadness. But fear not, because our next destination awaits us just across the border in Piggs Peak. It’s only a one-hour drive, covering a distance of 62 kilometers. After that, we’ll make our way to Malelane, which is about 85 kilometers away and takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach. And finally, we’ll arrive at Buckler’s Africa Lodge, nestled on the edge of the Kruger National Park. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the park as you relax on your verandah, sipping sundowners and observing the animals that gather at the riverbank to quench their thirst.
Next Day: Now, let’s come up with a great plan for the next day. One option is to spend the entire day exploring the Kruger National Park as a day visitor. You can immerse yourself in the lush bush that characterizes this world-famous park and marvel at the diverse wildlife that calls it home. Another option is to embark on a park tour and end the day at Shishangeni, a lodge located inside the park, on the other side of the Crocodile River Loop. The choice is yours! Whichever you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the captivating beauty of the park and all the magnificent creatures that inhabit it. And with two excellent lodging options available, your comfort is guaranteed.

2. A Breezy Descend – From the Highveld to the Coast
Let me tell you about a fascinating journey – a smooth and effortless descent from the Highveld to the coast. It’s an adventure that showcases the remarkable diversity of South Africa’s landscape.
As I embark on this journey, I find myself fascinated by the contrast between the Highveld’s lofty altitudes and the coastal plains. The Highveld, characterized by its elevated plateaus and rolling hills, offers breathtaking views that stir a sense of wonder within me. The crisp air and vibrant vegetation create a picturesque tableau, captivating the senses.
But as I venture further, the landscape begins to transform. The air becomes humid, and a gentle breeze carries the scent of the ocean. The sight of sandy beaches and crashing waves awakens a deep longing for sun and surf.
Descending from the Highveld to the coast is a magical experience. It’s as if the earth gently pulls me towards the sea, enticing me to embrace the carefree spirit of the coastal lifestyle.
One can’t help but notice how the change in altitude affects the climate. The cool, temperate Highveld gives way to a warmer, more subtropical climate closer to the coast. The transition is marked by a noticeable increase in rainfall, nourishing the rich vegetation and supporting diverse ecosystems.
As I travel downhill, I am reminded of the incredible diversity of South Africa’s flora and fauna. From the grassy plains of the Highveld, I encounter lush forests, vibrant wetlands, and picturesque estuaries on my way to the coast. This gradual transformation in landscape is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of nature.
But the journey doesn’t end with the physical changes in the environment. It’s also a journey of self-discovery and connection. As I immerse myself in the sights and sounds of the coastal towns, I feel a sense of calm and peace. The slower pace of life and the warm hospitality of the locals create a nurturing atmosphere that allows me to truly unwind.
So, if you’re ready for an adventure, consider embarking on this remarkable downhill journey from the Highveld to the coast. Take a leap into a world of contrasting landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a tranquil way of life. It’s a journey that will leave you refreshed, rejuvenated, and longing for more.
