1. Lindani, Waterberg
If you’re looking for an affordable getaway, Lindani is the perfect choice. With prices ranging from R305 to R630 per person, it won’t break the bank. You can reach this paradise in just a three-hour drive from Joburg city center. For more information, visit their website lindani.co.za.
If you’re looking for a wonderful family getaway immersed in nature, Lindani is the perfect destination. Located just 275 kilometers from Johannesburg, this self-catering retreat offers a bushveld back garden and a delightful rock pool. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a squad of warthogs grazing on the lawns!
At Lindani, you have a range of accommodation options to choose from. There are cozy cottages that can sleep four people, a tented forest camp for eight, and even an enormous four-house Motseng lodge complex that can accommodate up to 18 guests. Whatever your group size, Lindani has you covered.
One of the highlights of Lindani is the variety of outdoor activities available. You can explore the easy hiking trails, rent bicycles, and pedal past magnificent wildlife such as wildebeest, zebra, eland, and giraffe. If you prefer a leisurely day out, pack a picnic and head to one of the five riverside sites. You can enjoy a refreshing swim and even float lazily in the water with the help of tubes provided at one of the spots.
Imagine this: you arrive at a delightful lodge nestled in the breathtaking Waterberg region. The lodge is called Kingfisher Lodge, and let me tell you, it has everything you need for a memorable getaway.
One of the first things that caught my eye was the attention to detail. The lodge provides 50 kilograms of firewood, so you can cozy up to a warm fire in the evening. And they didn’t stop there. They also offer guides on local mammals, birds, and reptiles, perfect for nature enthusiasts. Plus, they have a selection of games for those rainy days when outdoor exploration isn’t an option.
Now, let’s talk about the food. Kingfisher Lodge has a farm kitchen that serves up freshly prepared meals made to order. From hearty stews to savory quiches, their menu is sure to satisfy any craving. If you’re in the mood for a traditional South African braai, don’t worry, they’ve got you covered. Just make sure to save room for dessert because their milk tart is to die for. And trust me, there’s nothing better than waking up to the smell of farm bread toasting in the morning.
So, how do you get there? Well, if you’re coming from Johannesburg city center, it’s about a 3-hour drive. Not too bad, right? And if you have any questions or want to make a reservation, you can simply give them a call at 0825708474. Alternatively, you can visit their website at jembisa.com.
Hey there! I want to tell you about this awesome place called Kingfisher Lodge. It’s located right by the Palala River in the beautiful Waterberg region. You won’t believe it, but it’s only three hours away from Joburg!
Now, Kingfisher Lodge is part of a group of accommodations called Palala River Lodges. It’s a real gem! The lodge itself is a big, spacious farmhouse with three bedrooms. Inside, there’s a cozy fireplace that’s the heart of the place. You can chill out in the open-plan living area and soak up the warmth. How amazing is that?
But wait, that’s not all! There are also two rondavels nearby. You know what they are? They’re these cool, round huts with their own en-suite bathrooms. So, you can have your own little private oasis, just a stone’s throw away from the farmhouse.
The lodge can sleep up to 10 people. So, you can bring your family and friends along for a great time! And guess what? There’s even a pool on-site. So, when it gets too hot, you can take a dip and cool off.
But here’s the best part. Just a short walk from the lodge, there’s a bird hide. What’s a bird hide, you ask? It’s this cozy little spot where you can hide and watch all sorts of amazing birds. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some other animals too! How cool is that?
Speaking of animals, you’ll have plenty of chances to see them in the reserve. The reserve covers a massive 3000 hectares! That’s like having your own kingdom. There are so many lookout points where you can take in the stunning views. And if you’re up for an adventure, you can go on some 4X4 routes, where you might come across waterbuck, giraffe, and warthog. Talk about exciting!
Of course, you can always just chill out on the lodge porch. From there, you’ll have an incredible view of the Waterberg hills. And guess who might come by to say hello? A hippo! Can you imagine sitting there and listening to the harrumphs of a hippo? It’s a one-of-a-kind experience!
So, if you’re in the mood for a unique getaway, Kingfisher Lodge is the place to be. And believe me, you won’t be disappointed!
3. Bontle Tented Camp and Campsite, Marakele National Park
Hey there! So, if you’re on the lookout for an amazing camping adventure, I’ve got just the thing for you. It’s this incredible spot called SanParks, and let me tell you, it’s worth every penny! A night in one of their tents starts at just R1175 for two people, and trust me, it’s money well spent.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Where is this place? Well, it’s about a 3-hour drive from the center of Joburg. So, it’s not too far, but far enough to make you feel like you’re escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new to the whole outdoor experience, SanParks has got you covered. They offer everything from basic tents to luxury options, so you can choose the level of comfort that suits you best.
And here’s something else that’s pretty cool. If you’re into hiking, they have some incredible trails for you to explore. So, pack your walking shoes and get ready for some adventure!
Oh, and did I mention the stars? The night sky at SanParks is absolutely breathtaking. Trust me, you’ve never seen stars like this before. It’s like a whole other world up there.
So, what are you waiting for? Give SanParks a call or visit their website today, and start planning your epic camping getaway. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
These fancy tented camps are way more stylish than any other SANParks place I’ve been to. The crisp white sheets, awesome kitchen facilities, and spacious layout surrounded by Waterberg bushveld offer a lot of privacy. You might even catch a glimpse of a white rhino trotting by or wake up to impala munching on fresh shoots right outside your chalet. It’s not unusual to see other game wandering through as well. Marakele is a great alternative to Kruger if you don’t want to compromise on game viewing. You can spot elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, and even some of the more elusive species like tsessebe and sable in the park.
4. De Kunst Huisje, Bela-Bela

Welcome to De Kunst Huisje, a guesthouse that takes art to a whole new level. When you first arrive, you can’t help but notice the charming old farmhouse. Its red door and window frames catch your eye, and the stoep is home to some impressive wooden carved chickens. It’s a place that immediately piques your curiosity.
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by an art lover’s delight. De Kunst Huisje is filled to the brim with a wide range of artwork. The views of the Hamasha Gorge will take your breath away. The camp comprises two cottages, each accommodating four people, a central kitchen, and a lounge area with a fireplace.
What sets Hamasha Bushcamp apart is its complete isolation from the outside world. There’s no cell reception here, and electricity is not part of the equation. Mosetlha Bush Camp, Madikwe Game Reserve

The cabins at Mosetlha Bush Camp are designed to give you a unique experience of the night sky.
Mosetlha is the perfect choice for South Africans visiting Madikwe on a budget. The camp offers an authentic bushveld experience, with open cabins that allow you to connect with nature. The only barrier between you and the wilderness is an elephant wire that prevents the animals from damaging the lodge. The cabins, built on stilts, can accommodate up to 20 people and have canvas blinds that can be rolled up so you can fall asleep under the stars. The food served at Mosetlha is simple and comforting, cooked over an open fire and on gas stoves.

I can’t stress enough how incredible Saamrus is. This place is a hidden gem tucked away on a 500-hectare farm in the beautiful Magaliesberg area. The moment you arrive, you’ll be blown away by the serenity and romance that awaits you.
Chris and Annatjie Geldenhuys, the warm-hearted owners, have poured their hearts into creating a truly enchanting experience for guests. Their attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the self-catering cottages, which are unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere.
When it comes to style, these cottages are a masterpiece. The Geldenhuys have beautifully furnished each one in a charming budget farm-house style. You’ll feel right at home as you step inside and discover the thoughtful touches that make these cottages so special.
One of the best features of Saamrus is the privacy you’ll enjoy. Each cottage has its own fenced garden, ensuring that you have your own personal sanctuary during your stay. And if you’re travelling with your furry companion, you’ll be thrilled to know that Saamrus is a pet-friendly establishment. Your four-legged friend will have plenty of room to roam and play.
Another highlight of Saamrus is the breathtaking views. The cottages are strategically placed to make the most of the stunning surroundings. You’ll be treated to panoramic vistas of the mountains, creating a backdrop that is simply awe-inspiring.
Imagine spending your evenings gathered around a crackling firepit, enjoying a delicious braai under the stars. The cottages at Saamrus offer this wonderful experience, allowing you to truly connect with nature and your loved ones.
It’s not just the cottages that make Saamrus so special – the location is equally impressive. The farm is nestled in the heart of the Magaliesberg, which means you’ll have access to a range of outdoor activities and attractions. Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure-seeker, or simply in need of a peaceful retreat, Saamrus has something for everyone.
Don’t just take my word for it. Plan a visit to Saamrus and experience the magic for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

And if you need to cool off, there’s a small communal pool for guests to enjoy.
However, there is one slight inconvenience. The hillside cottages are only accessible by a 4X4 vehicle. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to make the trek on foot, which can be quite a hike uphill. But don’t worry, there are always two strong men available to help carry your things for a small tip. The staff at this lodge are known for their exceptional service, so you’ll be well taken care of.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, you can hop on a bike or take a hike. If you’re feeling particularly spirited, you can even climb the small hill near the tents and witness the breathtaking sunset.

Hey there! Let me tell you about this amazing place I found. It’s a 75-hectare property with eight cozy timber cottages. What’s great is that each cottage is separate from the others, so you can enjoy some space to yourself. They’re not as private as Saamrus, but they do offer more room than most places.
Here’s the cool part – each cottage has its own fenced garden and even a private outdoor shower. And get this, they even have a handheld showerhead specifically for your furry friend! The owners, Caroline de Villiers and Mark Morgan, are big dog lovers, so they understand how important it is for pet owners to find pet-friendly accommodations.
Now, these cottages may not be the fanciest or most luxurious, but let me tell you, they are spotlessly clean and super comfortable. And the best part is, the owners have thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable. From simple things like band-aids and cotton swabs to convenient recycling bins and well-lit barbecue areas where you can have a cookout without the smoke, they’ve got it all covered.
If you have a socialized pup, they even have a five-kilometer trail for you to explore. You can enjoy the beautiful views while your furry buddy has a blast. And after a fun day out, you can head back to the cottages and clean up in your private outdoor shower before relaxing by the small shared pool.
Oh, and the cherry on top – there’s a river area at the bottom of the property where your furry friend can get nice and muddy, just like they love, before you both go back to your cottage and get cleaned up.
Personal Recommendation: I personally enjoyed staying at Cabbage Tree Cottage because of its secluded location. However, all the accommodations at this venue offer similar amenities, including an open-plan lounge with a cozy log fireplace, a well-equipped kitchen, a full bathroom, a shaded patio, and Wi-Fi access.
12. Glenogle Farm, Magoebaskloof
Price: The price for two people starts at R700 per person, and for four people, it starts at R475 per person.
Travel time from Joburg city centre: It takes approximately 3 hours to reach Glenogle Farm from the city center of Joburg.
Contact: To make a reservation, you can call 0832598321 or visit their website at glenogle.co.za.

You’ll have access to free Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected with the world while enjoying the serenity of the countryside.
What sets this four-bedroom haven apart is its exceptional coziness. Built right next to the stables, it encapsulates the warmth and comfort of a country retreat. As you enter, a stunning spiral staircase beckons you to explore the second floor, where the bedrooms await. But before you ascend, take a moment to immerse yourself in the living area, adorned with timeless pieces of furniture that exude elegance. Sink into the luxurious leather couches and breathe in the fragrant hydrangea bouquets, freshly picked from the farm’s enchanting gardens.
Hey there! Looking for a cozy getaway? I’ve got just the place for you! Picture this: a beautiful lodge nestled in Schoemanskloof, just a three-hour drive from Joburg city center. Welcome to Wolwekrans Eco Lodge, where tranquility meets adventure.

Hey there! I wanted to tell you all about this amazing place I discovered called Schoemanskloof Escarpment. It’s a stunning spot, covering a whopping 120 hectares of beautiful bushveld. The best part? There are two private self-catering cabins nestled up high, giving you the most incredible views and total seclusion. Perfect for a peaceful getaway.
When it comes to the cabins themselves, they’re simple and stylish, with a touch of elegance. The spacious two-bedroom accommodation is decked out with fresh white linen and gorgeous natural stone walls that perfectly complement the off-the-grid vibe. Plus, you’ll have all the peace and tranquility you could ever hope for.
Can we talk about the landscape for a minute? It’s breathtaking! Think lush forests, crystal-clear springs where you can take a dip, and vast acacia plains that seem to go on forever. I can’t even begin to describe how beautiful it is. It’s like stepping into a whole new world.
Now, I should warn you that getting there can be a bit of an adventure. The mountain road is pretty bumpy, so it’s best to have a high-clearance car if you’re driving yourself. But if that’s not your cup of tea, no worries! You can arrange a transfer instead. Oh, and did I mention that pets are welcome too? It’s the perfect place for a little fur baby getaway.
14. Kaapsehoop Horse Trails, Kaapsehoop
Now, let me tell you about another exciting activity you can try in the area. Have you ever been horseback riding? Well, if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat! At Kaapsehoop Horse Trails, you can saddle up and explore the stunning surroundings on horseback.
The prices are really reasonable too, starting at just R330 per person for the cottages (which can sleep up to 12 people). And if you’re just looking to go for a ride, it’s only R315 an hour. What a steal!
The journey from Joburg city centre to Kaapsehoop takes about 3 hours, so it’s definitely doable for a day trip or a weekend getaway. If you’re interested, you can reach out to them at 0761080081 or visit their website at horsebacktrails.co.za.
Driving from Nelspruit to Kaapsehoop takes about an hour and goes up 800 meters to the majestic pine plantations of the Drakensberg escarpment. As you reach the open fields, you’ll spot the first group of horses roaming free. The owner, Christo Germishuys, believes in natural horsemanship, a method that values giving horses plenty of space and relies on coaxing and communication for training. Even kids as young as six can join his guided one-hour trail, while more experienced riders have the option for longer excursions.
The farm itself is sprinkled with ancient-looking horse relics, some of which may have been left behind for generations, while others are just waiting to be used again. These historic artifacts can also be found inside the cozy cottages on the property, where they compete for wall space with sturdy farmhouse furniture. While each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, I highly recommend having at least one meal at the Gypsy Caravan Café. Chef Mike Kay serves up mouthwatering dishes on the café’s charming sunset stoep, making it a truly delightful experience.

I love how the sunlight fills Stone Tin Lodge during the day. It warms up the entire space, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. And when night falls, the large central fireplace takes over, providing a comforting warmth to the open-plan lounge, dining, and kitchen area.
The interior of Stone Tin Lodge is simply beautiful. The pale wood finishings, navy fabrics, and Nguni-skin rugs create a stylish and sophisticated ambiance. It’s the perfect combination of rustic charm and modern elegance.
Located on a private farm, about 30 kilometers from Dullstroom, Stone Tin Lodge offers breathtaking views of two trout-filled dams and the surrounding rolling hills. It’s a nature lover’s paradise.
What makes Stone Tin Lodge even more special is its commitment to sustainability. The lodge is completely off the grid, running primarily on solar energy and gas. They even have a backup generator, just in case. It’s amazing to see how technology can be harnessed to provide all the comforts of home while minimizing the impact on the environment.
If you’re looking for a peaceful and eco-friendly getaway, Stone Tin Lodge is the perfect choice. You can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature without worrying about your carbon footprint. It’s a true sanctuary in the heart of the countryside.

But as soon as you arrive at your stone cottage and take in the breathtaking 360-degree views, any frustration you feel melts away.
There’s something special about Woolly Bugger, named after a popular fishing fly (although you’ll also see plenty of sheep around). Just a short drive down a bumpy road, and a little further into the farm, you’ll find these charming cottages in Tonteldoos. They may be small, but they’re cozy and packed with character. Each cottage has a simple yet vibrant decor, with red and grey tones complemented by touches of white, deep red, brown, and stone.
Inside, you’ll discover unique layouts with rickety stairs and unexpected spaces. It’s a rustic and boho atmosphere that might not appeal to those who prefer sleek finishes or television addicts (no TV here, but plenty of fireplaces). The Fisherman’s Cottages and Barn House are separate from the main farmhouse, which has been transformed into four studio suites.
Hey there! Let’s talk about these cool studios next to Fisherman’s Cottage 7. They share a cozy space, so they’re perfect if you’re traveling with friends. And if you book all seven, the whole farm is yours! It’s an awesome spot to accommodate up to 28 guests. You’ll have access to a covered outdoor lapa, a function shed with a big fireplace, and even two dams. Plus, depending on the season, you can go foraging for peaches, pears, figs, plums, crab apples, or walnuts. How amazing is that?
If you’re a family looking for a good-value option, you should check out the compact Fisherman’s Cottage 7. It has two upstairs bedrooms, one downstairs bedroom, and they all share one bathroom. Perfect for quality family time! But if you’re two couples, I recommend booking Studio 4 and 5. They have an incredible view that you’ll love.

Have you ever laid eyes on a fluffy South American alpaca? Or witnessed a group of these llama-like creatures munching on grass from the top of a renovated grain silo? Imagine being able to experience this firsthand by venturing to the Maluti Mountains and taking in the breathtaking highlands surrounding Fairview Estates. It’s just a short half-hour drive from Fouriesburg, and trust me, it’s worth it.
After undergoing an extensive eighteen-month renovation and going through countless angle grinder blades, two sturdy silos that were once filled with cattle feed have been magically transformed into a captivating four-story vacation home. The walls, made of vibrant red face bricks, connect the two silos seamlessly. Now, this unique abode can accommodate up to eight individuals.
Inside this extraordinary structure, you’ll find two master bedrooms featuring queen-sized beds adorned with crisp white percale linen and equipped with electric blankets to keep you warm on those chilly evenings. The kids will have their own special sleeping area on the ground floor.
One of the standout features of this unconventional home is the wooden spiral staircase that winds its way up the side of the cylindrical silo. As you ascend, you’ll pass by the bedrooms and enter into the cozy open-plan kitchen and living area. But the real treat awaits you at the top – a truly magnificent outdoor lapa.
The lapa is a hidden gem, equipped with a gas braai for barbecuing, a pub-style bench for seating, and most importantly, astounding views of the rolling hills that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Welcome to a beautiful garden filled with vibrant flowers! This charming farmhouse, made of sandstone, has been lovingly restored and is located just 17 kilometers off the N3. It has an interesting history, having been destroyed during the Anglo-Boer War and rebuilt as part of British post-war reparations, which is why it has such a fantastic name. When you step inside, each room welcomes you with a mesh-covered door that opens onto a shady, vine-covered stoep. Fresh flowers add a touch of beauty to every room, creating a lovely atmosphere.
The farmhouse’s kitchen is bright and airy, and it offers a delightful view of a cattle field, where horses can be heard neighing nearby. If you’re not in the mood to cook, the wonderful host, Angie Bester, can prepare delicious homemade meals for you or pack a picnic basket. Her creamy savory tart and mango salad were so good that I couldn’t help but go back for seconds and thirds. Angie is also knowledgeable about the best mountain-biking routes in the area. You can choose between scenic options along old farm roads or more challenging routes for those seeking an adrenaline rush.
