Let me tell you about General Jan Smuts. He was born in 1870 in a not-so-fancy place called Riebeek West. You should go visit the place where he was born, even though it’s on the grounds of the PPC cement factory. The house he grew up in is still there, just like it was when he lived there. Inside, you can see pictures of his mom and other family members. They also have a museum part where you can learn more about his life. If you’re into history, you’ll find it really interesting!

11. The Olienhout “Post Office” Tree

When I think about the past, I imagine a time when mail was delivered by a post cart from Hermon. The best part is that the mail was left under a magnificent Olienhout tree near Waterbron. It’s a shame I didn’t get to see the tree during my visit, but the story behind it is truly fascinating! Apparently, the postmaster would blow his horn to let the local farmers know that the post had arrived. How cool is that? Sadly, the post office tree is now blocked by a Telkom line. However, the folks in the valley are determined to have the line moved because of the tree’s historical significance. Fingers crossed that they succeed!

As I walked into the wine tasting room at Allesverloren, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the breathtaking view of the valley and the vineyards. It was as if I had stepped into a little slice of paradise.

The history of this place is fascinating. It all started back in 1704 when a fire ravaged the property while the owners were away attending a service in Stellenbosch. When they returned and saw the devastation, someone exclaimed, “Allesverloren!” which means “all is lost” in Afrikaans. And thus, the farm got its name.

The Malan family, who still owns the farm to this day, has a rich legacy here. In fact, one of South Africa’s former prime ministers, D F Malan, was born right here at Allesverloren. They have been producing award-winning wines for generations, including some fantastic Portuguese varietals.

But it’s not just the wine that draws people in. It’s the experience of being in this picturesque setting, surrounded by nature and history. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Allesverloren has something special to offer.

While you’re there, don’t forget to grab some recipe cards that offer delightful culinary ideas. For instance, you can try the Lamb Shank with Basil Pesto Mash, using their Kasteelberg Shiraz, or perhaps the Creamy Chicken & Mushroom Pasta, paired with their Riebeek Cabernet Sauvignon. And of course, you’ll want to take home a few reasonably priced bottles of their wines as well. I particularly enjoyed their Montino range, which has a delightful hint of fizz to liven up your afternoon. Plus, these wines are low in alcohol and calories, making them a guilt-free indulgence!

They have a wide selection of books, both new and second-hand, and they also offer a variety of teas, coffees, breakfast options, and light meals. It’s the perfect spot for bookworms like me!

Katarina’s is a new and stylish place, with a touch of Provence, that you can easily walk to from anywhere in town. My room, Room 2, was spacious and had an open layout. It had a cozy sitting area and a separate bathroom with a beautiful tiled floor. The bathroom also had a fantastic shower. They provide complimentary tea, coffee, and rusks, but you’ll have to find your own food in town (which is not a problem at all with so many great options available).

If you’re attending a wedding in town and need a comfortable and clean place to sleep, or if you plan on partying all night at The Secret Garden (which, by the way, is right next door), Katarina’s is a great place to stay.

Just remember, when you arrive, there won’t be a reception desk. You’ll need to call the owners, and they’ll bring you the key to your room.

With its 14 archways and the longest stoep south of the Limpopo, this hotel is a true gem.

Throughout the stoep, you’ll come across relics from the colonial era, giving the place an old-world charm. And if that’s not intriguing enough, step inside and you’ll find some mounted animal heads on the walls from the trophy hunting days. It’s like stepping into a time machine!

The en-suite bathroom was a true delight, especially in winter, with its heated floor. I loved having the option of a luxurious bath or a quick shower, and the big bowl of bath salts added an extra touch of indulgence.

Upon check-in, I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary glass of sherry. To top it off, any available rooms after 15h00 were discounted by 50% for the night, and breakfast was included. With all these amazing perks, including G&Ts, a delightful 5-course dinner, and a scrumptious 3-course breakfast, this deal is truly one of the best in town. Now, let’s talk about another farm called Goedgedacht, which is a little further away from town. This place is perfect for school groups and youth camps, or for large groups of people looking for weekend accommodation. The only catch is that you might have to sleep in single beds. But don’t worry, they also have a chapel and special lodgings for weddings.

What’s really cool about Goedgedacht is that it’s a charitable trust. They do a lot of good work in the community and even supply Pick n’ Pay with olives and olive products. So when you stay at Goedgedacht, you’re supporting a good cause.

Hey there! I recently visited Riebeek Kasteel Main Street and had an absolute blast! There’s so much to do and see in this charming town, but unfortunately, I couldn’t fit everything into my schedule. There are a few places I missed out on, like Het Vlock Casteel, Wicked Treats, and The Wine Kollective, as well as some incredible hiking and cycling trails. Guess I’ll just have to go back someday!
