I was lucky enough to visit Paternoster recently, and I have to say, it blew me away. The sheer beauty of this place is hard to put into words. The way the wind and sun play off the rugged coastline, the sparkling aquamarine waters of the Atlantic crashing onto the sandy beaches, it’s truly mesmerizing.
What struck me most about Paternoster is the village itself. Strict regulations on building have resulted in a charming cluster of simple, whitewashed houses. Walking through the narrow streets feels like stepping back in time. It’s no wonder that Paternoster has earned a reputation as the prettiest fishing village on the West Coast.
Why Choose Paternoster?
Welcome to Paternoster!
Did you know that Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages in the country? Our economy is still supported by fishing, but tourism has become our primary source of income. During the winter, some parts of the village may become quiet, but our development is constantly evolving to include and support the original residents. This sets us apart from other towns and gives us a unique and authentic charm. We are proud to be a community that is not limited by the divisions of the past, and we continue to strive for unity. However, it is important to recognize that there is a significant contrast between the affluence of our visitors and the challenges faced by our local population. We are working towards finding a balance that benefits everyone.
Hey there, great choice!
You’ve got plenty of wonderful options to choose from in Paternoster. There are cozy bed and breakfast accommodations, as well as two fantastic hotels – the Abalone and the Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel. But let me tell you, the real treasure trove lies in the self-catering category. You won’t be disappointed!
A world of houses

It’s like diving into a sea of options! And the best part? Both of these agencies provide exceptional service, ensuring your stay is absolutely perfect.
Give back to the community
If you choose to book with Stay in Paternoster, you’re not just getting a beautiful house for your vacation. You’re also making a positive impact on the local community. A small portion of every booking goes to the Paternoster People’s Partnership, a wonderful community project. So not only will you have an amazing time, but you’ll also be supporting a great cause.
Don’t forget to dine
While you’re in Paternoster, make sure to check out some of the fantastic restaurants in town. They offer a delicious variety of cuisines that will satisfy any food lover’s cravings. So, after a day of exploring and enjoying the beauty of Paternoster, treat yourself to a mouthwatering meal.
Ultimate winter getaway
Paternoster is a true winter wonderland. And here’s a little secret – it’s even more affordable during the winter months! Many of the houses have cozy fireplaces that will keep you warm and toasty. And if you plan your trip during the week, you might even score some sweet discounts during the summer season too. So, don’t miss out on the incredible deals Paternoster has to offer.
The Beauty in Doing Nothing
Welcome to a place where time slows down, inviting you to indulge in peaceful thoughts, leisurely strolls, delectable cuisine (Oep ve Koep alone will tantalize your taste buds) and even horseback rides along the sandy shores.
A Gentle Reminder
In Paternoster, life is relaxed, but it’s always wise to keep your belongings secure and ensure your safety.
1. A Piece of Heaven
The Ultimate Six-Bedroom House on the Beach
Review: Unrated
I gotta tell you, this place is something else. It’s up on a hill, right at the quiet end of Bekbaai. And let me tell you, the views from here are absolutely breathtaking. I mean, picture-perfect. You won’t find a more peaceful spot in Paternoster. But here’s the real kicker: this place has got six bedrooms, all with their own bathroom. And get this, most of them have a stunning view of the sea. So, if you’re traveling with a bunch of people, it’s super easy to split up the rooms. Oh, and did I mention they have a terrace with a pool? It’s the perfect spot to chill out after a long day. And here’s the best part: you don’t have to leave anyone behind. They’re totally cool with bringing the whole family, including the furry ones. Now, that’s what I call paradise.
Insider Tip: If you’re the lucky one who ends up with the room that doesn’t have a breathtaking sea view, don’t worry! You should be exempt from doing any dishes during your stay.
Price: Rates start at R5 000 and the property can accommodate up to 12 guests. Housekeeping services are provided on weekdays.

2. The Ultimate Retreat for Oystercatcher Lovers
Best Cozy Bed and Breakfast
TripAdvisor No. 5 of 17 B&B/Inn
I’m just one of four rooms at this place. Each room is furnished in its own unique style, and you get your own entrance and porch to enjoy the beautiful views of the sea. The best part is, there are only eight guests at a time, so the lounge and dining area never feel crowded. If you want, you can even have breakfast served right on your porch. This place is perfect for a romantic getaway because it’s so intimate and private. We’re located on the quietest beach in Paternoster, right next to the Columbine Nature Reserve. It’s really peaceful here. We even have a plunge pool with a stunning sunset view. In the winter, you can cozy up by the fireplace in the lounge. Our manageress, Sarah Msiza, is amazing. She takes care of restaurant reservations and anything else you need. She’s a real gem, just like this place.
Hey there! Let me give you some insider tips for your stay:
Room tip:
If you love a big balcony, go for Room 2. It’s got the largest one! But don’t worry, any of the upstairs rooms (2/3/4) will be great choices.
If you’re more of a bath person, Room 1 is the one for you. It’s got a bathtub instead of a shower. Just ask for it when you book!
Cost:
When it comes to the cost, you’re looking at R1,850 for two people sharing, including bed and breakfast. That’s a sweet deal!

Hey there! Looking for a great place to stay? Well, I’ve got a recommendation for you. Let me tell you about this amazing beachfront home called Le Chaim House.

Le Chaim House – Your Perfect Beachfront Getaway
The Ultimate Three-Bedroom Home by the Beach
Tripadvisor: Unrated
I’m here to tell you about a unique house that’s right on Bekbaai beach. It’s really something special, almost as good-looking as As It Is In Heaven, which is known for being the most beautiful self-catering house in this tranquil part of Paternoster’s coast. The rooms are spacious and cool, with a relaxed and uncluttered feel. You’ll find lots of distressed-timber furniture, which gives the place that classic beach-house look that everyone loves. The kitchen, dining, and living area are all connected and open up to a terrace with breathtaking views. And the best part? Just a few steps and you’re right on the beach. It’s no surprise that this place is incredibly popular – it’s a real gem.
Room tip: If you’re looking for the best room in Paternoster with stunning views and a study area, then the master bedroom is the one for you. It’s the largest room in the entire place.
Cost: The price starts at R3,250 and it can accommodate up to six people. However, if you want to sleep eight people, you can also book Le Chaim Cottage for an additional charge (from R950). The cottage is connected to the main house by an interleading door. Children who are 12 years old and above are welcome to stay.

5. Gelukkie
The Perfect Romantic Hideaway (and Party Location)
Ranked as the second best specialty lodging option on TripAdvisor
I never expected to choose a place so far from the beach (it only takes a short drive to get to the village and beach), but these two charming Karoo-style cottages (Nog ‘n Gelukkie and Klein Gelukkie, which are part of the Gelukkie wedding and function venue) are too delightful to pass up. They are spacious and incredibly private, each with its own beautifully landscaped garden. These cottages provide a complete escape from the world, especially during the winter months when you can light a massive fire and cozy up for the entire weekend. In the spring and autumn, you can spend your days lounging on the swinging al fresco double beds. However, during the scorching hot months, you’ll need to make a trip to the beach.
Room tip: If you’re looking for a more private option, try Nog ‘n Gelukkie, which is situated at the back of the farm.
Price: Each cottage starts at R850 (both can accommodate two people).

6. Strandloper ocean boutique hotel
Best boutique hotel
Strandloper Hotel: A Hidden Gem in the Coastal Hamlet
When my partner Deon Brand and I unleashed our unpretentious yet exquisitely stylish haven in December 2011, we catapulted the village’s sense of elegance to new heights. We managed to create an atmosphere that effortlessly emanates tranquility. Our sanctuary is nestled in a prized location on Mosselbank, right at the village’s northern boundary. To preserve the unspoiled vistas and halt any further construction, we extended our property three kilometers along the coast. Although TripAdvisor categorizes it as a bed and breakfast, Strandloper Hotel is undoubtedly a boutique establishment. With only 14 rooms, five of which offer breathtaking coastal and ocean panoramas, our hotel delivers a comprehensive range of indulgences to our esteemed guests. Prepare to be captivated by our Nature King Suites, featuring expansive floor-to-ceiling views of the pristine West Coast plains stretching northwards. Rest assured, our six elegant Courtyard Rooms, each boasting a private courtyard and charming water feature, will surpass your expectations. From the unforgettable dining experiences to the rejuvenating spa therapies and the invigorating swimming pool, every aspect of our service is meticulously crafted. You can trust that your investment in a stay at Strandloper Hotel is worth every penny.
Important Tip: If you want a spacious room with an ocean view, go for the Delphin Ocean Suite. For a great view of the courtyard, choose the Selena Courtyard Room with a Nature King Suite.
Pricing: Starting at R2 050 for two people, which includes bed and breakfast. If you’re bringing kids who are 14 years old or older, they can stay in the loft of the Nature King Suites for an additional R800 per child.
Contact: You can reach out to strandloperocean.com for more information.
7. Driftwood
The best beachfront house at a great price
Tripadvisor: Unrated
Hey there! I’ve got some exciting news for you. Let’s talk about the amazing beach houses along the sweeping shoreline from Voorstrandt restaurant to Long Beach. Most of these houses are designed to comfortably accommodate eight guests (Ceol na Mara stands out as a unique exception). Now, out of all these beautiful houses, I had the pleasure of selecting five that caught my eye (check out the ‘Worth a Look’ list below). But let me tell you, Driftwood takes the cake with its unbeatable combination of style and value for money. Architect and designer Paul Versfeld really nailed it with this one.
The best part? Even though Driftwood can sleep up to 10 people, the price is only R340 ‒ R400 per person. Yes, you read that right! With its prime location on the beachfront, in one of South Africa’s most beloved coastal villages, this is an absolute steal. And here’s the cherry on top: Driftwood is pet-friendly. It truly ticks all the boxes, doesn’t it? So why wait? Grab this opportunity and make unforgettable memories at Driftwood beach house.
Here’s a tip for choosing your room: Downstairs, you’ll find three double rooms. The one with the sea view is especially nice. If you’re a couple with young children, you might prefer the large master bedroom upstairs, which has two single beds.
When it comes to the cost: You can expect to pay around R3,400 for a stay (which can accommodate up to 10 people).
If you want to make a reservation: You can contact stayinpaternoster.co.za
Introducing the best classic beach house
Number 8: Beach hut
Check out this beautiful house! It may have a playful name, but don’t let that fool you. This place is anything but a hut. The owners have taken great care of it, and it truly is a beach classic.
When you step inside, you’ll immediately notice the elegant white wicker and timber furniture, creating a light and airy atmosphere. The color palette is inspired by the ocean, with various shades of blue throughout the space. And if you’re a fan of stripes, you’ll feel right at home here.
But it’s not just the aesthetics that make this house special. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect. From the luxurious Charlotte Rhys toiletries in the bathroom to the perfectly equipped kitchen, you’ll have everything you need and more. The kitchen is even positioned in a way that allows you to cook and entertain at the same time.
Now, let’s talk about the location. This house is situated on a prime beachfront, right alongside Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel and Langstrand. You’ll have the same breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding veld, but this house is cleverly angled to give you a sense of privacy and seclusion.
I have to say, it’s hard to find any faults with this delightful house. I’m so grateful that the owners are willing to share this little piece of paradise with guests like you.
Room tip: If you want the best view and the luxury of an outdoor shower, the main bedroom is the way to go. Plus, there’s a cool two-bedroom annexe that used to be a garage.
Cost: It’ll set you back R5 000 per night, but it can sleep up to 10 people. Kids aged 12 and over are welcome.
