And trust me, once you find it, you won’t ever want to say goodbye! That’s why Elalani is the perfect place to stay while you explore this magical area. It’s a peaceful and welcoming spot that’s right on the old railway track, with the buildings being the original Goukamma Station and railway staff homes.
You know, the train doesn’t chug along here anymore. But hey, the railroad still exists, and you might just see some chickens strutting their stuff on the tracks instead! At Elalani, you can choose from a range of comfy accommodations. Whether you prefer dorm rooms, double rooms, family rooms, or even pitching your own tent, they’ve got you covered. Plus, breakfast is included in your rate, and let me tell you, their restaurant “Flippin’ Knys” serves up some mouthwatering meals at super affordable prices. People throughout the Garden Route rave about their famous pancakes!
But wait, there’s more! Elalani also has an awesome entertainment deck where you can unwind with a sundowner or lounge around during a well-deserved siesta. And get this – they often throw braais and host live bands right on that deck. It’s a happening spot, my friend!

When you come to Numbi Valley, you won’t believe you’re just 42km away from Oudtshoorn. It feels like you’re in a whole different world! The cottage used to be an old, falling-apart farmhouse, but now it’s a cozy and charming place to stay. The views of the valley and the Swartberg Mountains are absolutely stunning, especially in the morning and evening. And guess what? The whole farm runs on solar power, even the wifi!
The bathroom has a solar-powered water heater, but if the weather isn’t great, don’t worry! There’s also a donkey-boiler, and it works really well. This cozy, self-catering cottage has a charming and artistic vibe inspired by the Karoo. It’s filled with unique decor elements, such as a braai made from an old milk urn, and features a “Mad Max” watchtower that simply begs to be climbed. Despite its size, it’s a perfect choice for solo travelers, couples, or even families with one child thanks to an additional single bed. The kitchen is equipped with all the essentials for self-catering, and there’s also a flatscreen TV with access to Netflix. Personally, I fell in love with my “princess bed” adorned with lovely linens and a mosquito net!
If you’re traveling with a small dog, the cottage is pet-friendly upon prior arrangement. However, please keep in mind that there are no fences around the property. This means your furry friend will be tempted by plenty of interesting scents and areas to explore.

I discovered a little slice of heaven on a dusty road in Stanford that will make you want to extend your stay. The Old Mill, once a local mill in the 1800s, has been transformed into a charming self-catering cottage by Barry and Adrienne Jones. This cozy retreat offers a double bedroom with a separate bathroom and a loft upstairs with two single beds and an en-suite bathroom.
When you enter, you’ll be tempted by the plush leather couches, perfect for curling up with a book or watching TV. On sunny days, head out to the back deck with its Weber grill and large table, ideal for a relaxing evening barbecue. The kitchen is fully stocked, and you’ll find all the linens and towels you need. And don’t worry about storage; there’s plenty of room in the cupboards for longer stays.
Barry and Adrienne are not just hosts, they’re also avid gardeners. Their beautiful property features grapevines, herbs, granadillas, bananas, mangoes, figs, and pomegranates, all strategically placed alongside lavender bushes, bird baths, butterfly bushes, and a lovely indigenous section that attracts local birds. As you drift off to sleep, you’ll be serenaded by the chorus of stream frogs, and when you wake up, the buzzing bees in the butterfly bushes will greet you. And keep an eye out for Pippin and Boo, the resident Border Terriers who may pay you a visit.
Stanford itself is a delightful village that welcomes dogs, making it a perfect place for leisurely walks with your furry friend.
9. Babylons Tower Cottage, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Capacity: It can sleep up to five people.
Pets: You can bring your dogs along with you, just make sure to arrange it beforehand.

Whether you’re planning a trip with friends or a small family, this is the perfect getaway.
Step out onto the stoep and take in the breathtaking views of the Hemel-En-Aarde Valley. You’ll have a front-row seat to Creation, the stunning wine farm, and the beauty of nature surrounding you. And that’s not all! The stoep also features a spacious built-in braai where you can grill up some juicy steak and wors, all while soaking in the sounds of the night in your own private amphitheater. And if the weather isn’t ideal for a braai, no worries. Inside, you’ll find a gas stove and a cozy fireplace to keep you nice and warm.
This charming cottage has two double bedrooms, one of which has an additional single bed. Both bedrooms come with their own en-suite bathrooms, so you’ll have plenty of privacy and comfort during your stay. You’ll also find all the necessary crockery, cutlery, linen, and towels provided. Just remember to bring along your personal belongings and any other essentials you may need. Please note that there is no microwave available, and the number of plug sockets is limited. The available sockets are connected to an inverter, meaning you can only charge small devices like your phone or laptop.
During your stay, be sure to explore the nearby wine farms and sample some of the finest local wines. Take it easy and enjoy the peaceful days and quiet nights that this idyllic setting offers. And don’t forget to bring a shower cap for the unique outdoor shower experience! If you have furry friends joining your adventure, they’ll love running on the lush green lawn and joining you on walks through the picturesque orchards.

I’ve been to Oewerzicht multiple times throughout the years, and I have to say, it’s a place I can’t recommend enough. They have a variety of options for accommodation, including self-catering cottages stocked with everything you need, safari tents with a communal kitchen, and campsites with power outlets, barbecue facilities, and modern bathrooms. The surroundings offer hiking trails, and if you’re into mountain biking, there’s a challenging 25km trail for you to conquer. If you feel like heading out, Greyton is just a short drive away, where you can check out their market on Saturdays. But if you’d rather unwind and take in the stunning mountain views, that’s also an option. For those seeking adventure, you can spend your days swimming, tubing, canoeing, or fishing. And if you have kids or furry friends with you, you’ll be glad to know that there are large grassy areas perfect for them to run around on. Oewerzicht is a great place to celebrate special occasions with friends (you can even book the whole place!) or have a romantic getaway with your partner. Just keep in mind that it’s a working sheep farm, so please make sure to keep your dogs on a leash at all times, as you’ll be responsible for any harm caused to the farm animals.
11. River Magic Cottages, Vermaaklikheid
Sleeps: You’ll find various accommodation options that can accommodate different numbers of people.
Pet policy: As long as your four-legged friends are well behaved and friendly, they are more than welcome to join you. However, please make sure they don’t chase or bother any wild or domestic critters or nap on the furniture.
Cost: The cost starts at R250 per person per night, with a minimum charge of R750 per night. Additionally, there’s a request for dogs to make a donation to the Riversdale SPCA (you’ll find donation tins in the cottages).

I haven’t been back to this place in a while, but it’s still a spot that I often talk about and recommend! It’s the perfect escape from the city, where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of swimming, canoeing, and fishing in the Duiwenhoks River with your loved ones and your dog. All the accommodation options here are pet-friendly and have their own unique charm, but I have to say that Glory Be is the ultimate hideaway. To get to your cottage, you’ll be ferried across the river, leaving behind your car, cellphone, and worries! Glory Be can accommodate twelve people and has two double bedrooms, one twin bedroom, and two three-bedded rooms. The outdoor braai area offers breathtaking views of the river, and you even have access to a canoe and a rowboat if you want to attach a small outboard engine. When it’s time to leave, you’ll find yourself reluctant to step onto the ferry.
12. Tangleberry Cottage, Elgin Valley

Hey there, fellow food lover! Whether you’re an avid cook or someone who just enjoys good eats, this transformed laborer’s cottage next to a beautiful dam in the Elgin Valley is the perfect place to indulge in a few days of foodie heaven. The kitchen is a culinary dream, complete with a gas stove, oven, dishwasher, and double sink. It’s stocked with every gadget and tool you could possibly need – from roasting pans and casserole dishes to spatulas and spoons. And the list goes on! There’s even a bread-maker, food processor, slicer, and dicer. Plus, you’ll find an abundance of pots and pans, steamers, coffee makers, and of course, aprons, foil, and wax wrap.
But that’s not all! The kitchen is also a treasure trove of spices, with an assortment of jars filled with flavorful delights like caraway, smoked Spanish paprika, fenugreek, cumin, sage, cardamom, and juniper berries, just to name a few. And here’s the cherry on top – you get to pick fresh produce from the garden, whatever is in season! The garden is like a paradise, with apple trees, fig trees, lime trees, olive trees, plum trees, and pomegranate bushes. And let’s not forget the herbs! They’re flourishing in pots all around the stoep, offering a tantalizing array of flavors to enhance your dishes.
But even if you’re not a die-hard foodie, this place has plenty to offer. There are two luxurious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, perfect for a restful night’s sleep. The large stoep overlooking the dam is ideal for enjoying sundowners while admiring the view. And if you’re in the mood for some outdoor fun, there’s a built-in braai and a pizza oven for unforgettable evenings under the starry sky.
If there’s a chill in the air, cozy up on the plush leather couches with soft blankets by the roaring fire. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some quality time with loved ones. Whether you’re whipping up a feast or challenging each other to a lively board game, this cottage has thought of everything to ensure your getaway is an indulgent and unforgettable experience.
While you’re here, keep your ears peeled for the enchanting sounds of the Cape Ghost Frog, and don’t forget to watch out for the African Clawless Otter that might make an appearance in the evening on the dam. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you’re only a short distance away from all the wonderful attractions the Elgin Valley has to offer.
If you’ve got a furry friend with you, they’re in for a treat too! Small dogs will love frolicking on the lawn and exploring by the dam. However, please be aware that the cottage is located next to a farm road and there are no fences, so keep an eye on your pup.
13. Linquenda Chambre d’Hote B&B, Villiersdorp
Sleeps: This accommodation is suitable for two people.

When I first arrived at Linquenda Chambre d’Hote B&B, I was immediately captivated by the stunning veranda that wraps around the house and offers a breathtaking view of the mountains. This house, built in 1925, is one of the oldest in town. In addition to the magnificent veranda, the house features exquisitely restored wooden floors and ceilings, as well as a sprawling garden.
To enter the room, you go through the veranda, and inside you’ll find your own bathroom complete with a charming Victorian bathtub. The room also includes a small fridge and a coffee maker. If you feel like cooking, you’re welcome to use the kitchen in the main house. However, I highly recommend requesting a meal prepared by the owners, Andre and Emily Moya, who are both talented chefs.
When it comes to breakfast, you’re in for a treat. The tariff includes a delicious breakfast, and the eggs served are courtesy of the free-roaming chickens that can be seen happily scratching about on the lawn outside.
14. The Suntouched Inn, Napier
Imagine staying at the Sun-Touched Inn, a charming bed and breakfast nestled in the heart of a beautiful countryside. Here, I found that the options for accommodations are plentiful, with various room types available to suit every traveler’s needs.
One of the notable aspects of the Sun-Touched Inn is its pet-friendly policy. This means that you can bring your furry friends along to enjoy the relaxing retreat. However, it’s important to note that not all rooms and The Barn allow pets, so make sure to check with the Inn beforehand.
Now, let’s talk about the cost. The Sun-Touched Inn offers affordable rates, starting from just R500 for two people. It’s a great value for the comfort and serenity that await you at this hidden gem.

When you step foot into this cozy backpacker-style destination in Napier, it feels just like visiting a dear friend’s place – warm, relaxed, and inviting. The pizza here is absolutely amazing, and the bar is a famous hotspot for enjoying a wild night with the locals. You have a range of accommodation options to choose from, including three double rooms that share a cozy lounge area on the upper floor of the main building. For a cheerful and vibrant experience, The Garden Cottage offers two single beds dressed in colorful and cheerful linen, along with a private bathroom. On the other hand, The Barn offers a double bedroom, a loft bedroom, and two single daybeds, complete with a spacious lounge and a fully-equipped kitchen. Both of these cottages boast amazing views of the valley, especially when the canola fields are in full bloom.
The restaurant and pub are the perfect places to start your day with a hearty breakfast or enjoy delicious pizzas and light meals. Additionally, there are braai areas available for you to have your own barbecue experience. If you’re in the mood for a refreshing swim, take a dip in the swimming pool or challenge the locals to a game of pool in the evening. There’s never a dull moment here!
15. Le Bay Lodge, Gordon’s Bay
I stayed at Le Bay Lodge in Gordon’s Bay, which was an absolute delight. The lodge has various en-suite rooms that can accommodate different group sizes. It’s a cozy place where you can relax and unwind.
One thing that stood out to me about this lodge is their pet policy. As a dog lover, I found it wonderful that they allow small, well-behaved dogs to stay or join you for lunch. However, it’s important to note that this is by prior arrangement only. If you want to bring your furry friend along, please use the entrance at reception and not at the restaurant.
The cost of staying at Le Bay Lodge is quite reasonable, starting from R990 for two people. Considering the beautiful rooms and the excellent service, it’s definitely worth it. The staff is friendly and helpful, making your stay even more enjoyable.
If you’re interested in staying at Le Bay Lodge, I highly recommend giving them a call. You can reach them at 0218561019. You can also visit their website at lebay.co.za for more information.
In conclusion, Le Bay Lodge in Gordon’s Bay is a fantastic choice for a getaway. The comfortable rooms, pet-friendly policy, and reasonable prices make it an ideal destination. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, this lodge has it all. Give it a try, and you won’t be disappointed.
Guess what? Le Bay Lodge and Restaurant opened up again earlier this year, in January, and they even brought back their Sunday Carvery at the beginning of March. I have to say, this place is awesome. It’s super close to the beach, the drinks are reasonably priced, and the food is delicious. Plus, their accommodations won’t break the bank, and the staff is a blast to hang out with.
Let me tell you about the rooms. They’re not fancy or anything, but they’re nice and big with plenty of space to move around. Oh, and every room has its own bathroom, a mini fridge, and all the fixings for making coffee and tea. And get this – breakfast is included when you stay the night!
But that’s not all. On Fridays, they have a braai, which is like a barbecue, where you can chow down on some seriously good grub. And on Sundays, they go all out with a carvery spread. You’ve gotta try it – they serve up three different roasts, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, veggies, and a scrumptious dessert. Yum!
Now, when you see the big “no dogs” sign on the restaurant’s door, don’t be discouraged. It’s not because they hate pets or anything. It’s actually because of health regulations. You see, the kitchen is right next to the restaurant, and they have to keep things clean and hygienic, so no furry friends allowed in there.

The Bush Lodge is perfect for up to four people, offering two bedrooms with luxurious linens and spacious beds. I want to tell you about this amazing place in Velddrif that can accommodate a group of twelve people. It has four bedrooms in a separate cottage, each with its own bathroom. One of the best things about this place is the luxurious towels they provide. Trust me, they are the best! And if you feel like having some alone time, every room has its own flat-screen TV with DSTV. But if you’re in the mood for company, there’s a fantastic stoep with plenty of chairs and tables, as well as a separate entertainment room with a bar area, indoor braai, and a swimming pool. The interior design is quirky and fun, featuring unique chandeliers. And let’s not forget about the beautiful indigenous garden that’s home to a giant pecan nut tree. You might even spot a few resident tortoises that have been saved from the busy West Coast roads. But the real attraction is the outdoor space. Imagine sipping your morning coffee from one of their oversized tin mugs while watching the vibrant birdlife. And at night, you can unwind with a glass of wine and marvel at the breathtaking starry sky. Now, if you’re not part of a big group, don’t worry. You can still book one of the rooms and enjoy a delicious breakfast made just for you. Oh, and if you have a small dog, you can bring them too, but make sure to let them know in advance. They have a camping area and two cottages across the road that are pet-friendly, so you can bring along your well-behaved small dogs (just make sure they don’t chase the chickens!).
The camping spots are separated with stick fences, allowing for a decent amount of privacy. Each spot comes with its own built-in braai and ablution facilities. However, keep an eye on your furry companions to ensure they don’t bother other campers. The two pet-friendly houses are located across a busy road, so you’ll need to pay extra attention there as well.

One of my favorite campsites is a hidden gem where I can bring my beloved dog. The campsites are nestled beneath towering trees, providing natural shade and a welcome respite from the summer heat. While there may not be electricity available at the campsites, a bit of planning can help you adjust to a simpler way of life, free from the hum of electronic devices and the constant need for hot water. Alternatively, if you’re someone who can’t live without electricity, you can have some members of your group book a cottage and mooch off their power supply when needed.
What I appreciate about this campsite is the well-stocked shop, where you can find everything you need at reasonable prices. They even have tins of dog food and a selection of ice-cold beers, just in case you run out. Just a friendly reminder: the shop only accepts cash, so be sure to withdraw some money before you arrive to avoid any last-minute panics.
The highlight of this campsite is undoubtedly the stunning rock pools. These natural wonders are a true oasis, especially during the scorching summer months. They are easily accessible on foot, and you can spend hours exploring and cooling off in their crystal-clear waters. Additionally, there are hiking trails ranging from 2km to 5km in length, perfect for those who love a good adventure. If cycling is more your style, feel free to bring your bike along and enjoy some off-road cycling.
For fishing enthusiasts, the Olifants River offers excellent bass fishing opportunities. It’s a great way to relax and spend quality time in nature. And don’t worry, your furry friend can join you on your walks and have a blast splashing around in the natural rock pools.
Just keep in mind that this area can get scorching hot during the summer months, so make sure to prepare accordingly and stay hydrated. But with the abundance of natural beauty and activities available, this campsite is definitely worth the heat.
Do you have a favorite spot where you love to take your dogs? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
