1. Groot Constantia, Constantia
Hey there! Looking to escape the hustle and bustle? Well, I’ve got just the place for you – Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine estate. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some quality time with good food, good wine, and great company. Trust me, you’ll love it!
Now, let’s talk about picnics. At Simon’s Deli, you have two options – you can either design your own picnic basket or go for a pre-packed one. But remember, the contents and prices may change, so keep that in mind. And as for the prices, a standard, halaal, or vegetarian basket for two people costs R395. If you just want a single basket, it’s R220. Oh, and if you have kiddos with you, don’t worry – there’s a special kids basket available for R75.
Now, let’s get to the nitty-gritty details. Groot Constantia is open from Monday to Sunday, starting from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. That’s the timing for February to November. Ah, but in December and January, the kitchen closes at 9 in the evening. So, plan accordingly, my friend.

Amazing Picnics at Boschendal Wine Estate
Get Ready for a Delicious Treat
I have a great recommendation for you if you’re looking for fresh produce. You should stop by Boschendal’s farm shop and deli. I saw a really nice photo of it on Instagram, so it must be good.
Located at the entrance to the Franschhoek valley, Boschendal’s Le Pique Nique is a classic spot that I highly recommend. They have two different picnic areas, each offering a unique experience. Let me tell you more about them below. By the way, Boschendal is committed to sustainability and uses compostable biodegradable packaging for their picnics.
The Rhone Rose Garden Picnic costs R480 for two people. It doesn’t include wine, and you can’t bring your own. However, if you have kids between the ages of three and ten, they have a special basket available for them. It costs R95 and is filled with goodies just for them.
The Werf Farm Picnic is another option. It costs R430 for a basket for two people. Similarly to the Rhone Rose Garden Picnic, it doesn’t include wine, and you can’t bring your own. But don’t worry, they have a separate basket just for kids if you’re bringing them along.
The opening times for the Rhone Rose Garden Picnic are from Monday to Sunday. You can collect your basket between 12:00 and 14:00. On the other hand, the Werf Farm Picnic is open from Wednesday to Sunday, and you can collect your basket between 12:00 and 14:00 as well.
If you’re interested in visiting, you can reach out to Boschendal at 0218704274 to make a booking. For larger groups of more than 10 people, you can email them at [email protected]
What’s Inside the Basket?
Hey there! So, I wanted to tell you about this amazing picnic basket I found. It’s called the Rose Garden Picnic, and let me tell you, it’s filled with some seriously delicious stuff! Picture this: freshly baked baguettes straight from the farm, served with creamy Camembert cheese and preserves. And that’s not all! There’s also crispy lavash, chicken liver spread, and farm-made hummus. Yum!
Now, if you’re a vegetarian, no worries! There’s a version of the Rose Garden Picnic just for you. It includes all the same deliciousness, like the farm-baked baguettes, creamy Camembert, and crisp lavash. But instead of the meaty stuff, you’ll find grilled aubergine and cauliflower, mozzarella cheese, crispy chickpeas, rocket, salsa verde, black eye bean and pickled onion salad, and a seasonal garden salad with a mustard dressing. Oh, and don’t forget the baked chocolate pie!
And hey, if you’re bringing little ones along, they’ve got a special kiddies basket too! It’s got vegetable crisps, a Werf Butchery frankfurter hot dog, farm-made tomato ketchup and mayo, a yummy seasonal fruit salad, and chocolate chip ice cream. Perfect for those little appetites.
Introducing the delightful Werf Garden Picnic: We start with freshly baked baguettes and creamy butter, paired with a garden herb cottage cheese spread and crispy lavash crackers. To add a touch of Mediterranean flair, we include marinated olives and tangy feta cheese. And what’s a picnic without creamy hummus and succulent rotisserie chicken? Don’t forget the roast garlic mayo for that extra zing! To balance out the flavors, we serve a refreshing seasonal salad from our Werf garden, dressed with a tangy mustard vinaigrette. Finally, we top it all off with a scoop of vanilla and chocolate chip ice cream, along with farm-made marshmallows to satisfy your sweet tooth.
If you’re a vegetarian, we’ve got you covered with our Werf Farm Picnic (Vegetarian): You’ll still get to enjoy the delightful combination of freshly baked baguettes with butter and the garden herb cottage cheese spread with crisp lavash crackers. We’ll also include marinated olives and creamy feta cheese. Instead of chicken, we’ll grill flavorful aubergine and cauliflower, complemented by mozzarella and crispy chickpeas. For a burst of freshness, we’ll serve it all with a rocket salsa verde. Of course, there’s still a delicious Werf garden seasonal salad dressed with mustard vinaigrette. To end on a sweet note, we’ll treat you to a scoop of vanilla and chocolate chip ice cream.
And we haven’t forgotten the little ones – introducing the Werf Kiddies Menu: They’ll munch on crispy vegetable chips and savor a Werf Butchery frankfurter hot dog, accompanied by farm-made tomato ketchup and mayo. For a healthier touch, we’ll include a seasonal fruit salad. And of course, we’ll end with a child-friendly favorite – chocolate chip ice cream.

Now, let’s talk about what’s inside the picnic basket!
When it comes to planning a picnic, the menu plays a vital role in creating a memorable experience. The food you choose can elevate the ambiance and add to the enjoyment of the outdoor setting.
However, choosing the right dishes for a picnic can be a bit perplexing. You want something that is delicious, easy to transport, and will hold up well in the outdoor conditions. With these factors in mind, it’s important to take into account the season when deciding on your picnic menu.
In today’s fast-paced world, we often forget to pause and appreciate the beauty of the changing seasons. Each season has its own unique charm and offers a fresh selection of ingredients to work with. By embracing the flavors of the season, you can create a picnic menu that not only tastes amazing but also reflects the time of year.
One of the key aspects of picnic planning is understanding the produce that is in season. Fruits and vegetables that are in season are not only more flavorful but also more affordable. They are likely to be at their peak quality, making them a great choice for your picnic menu.
Additionally, seasonal ingredients can inspire creativity in the kitchen. They can challenge you to try new recipes and experiment with different flavors and combinations. It’s a wonderful opportunity to expand your culinary horizons and discover new favorites.
Interpreting the seasons through your picnic menu allows you to connect with nature and appreciate the cycle of life. It’s a way of acknowledging and celebrating the ever-changing world around us.
So, if you’re looking for a way to make your picnic extra special, why not consider creating a menu that embraces the season? You can delight in the fresh flavors, enjoy the beauty of nature, and create lasting memories.

When I think of picnics in Darling, my mind immediately goes to the delicious spread of food that awaits. Imagine farm-baked bread, perfectly crusty and warm, paired with two spreads of your choice. Maybe you’re in the mood for a Mediterranean vegetable quiche, with its rich flavors and flaky crust. And of course, no picnic is complete without a selection of cold meats and pickles, along with two local cheeses and some preserved fruit to balance out the savory bites. All of this can be enjoyed with a handful of whole wheat crackers, adding a satisfying crunch to each bite.
But the main event, in my opinion, is the sesame chicken strips. Juicy and tender, with just the right amount of spice, they are the star of the show. And what’s a picnic without a side of potato salad? Creamy mayo enveloping tender chunks of potato – it’s comfort food at its finest.
For those looking for something on the lighter side, there’s a summer green and roast vegetable salad that will refresh and revitalize you. The combination of crisp greens and roasted veggies creates a delightful mix of flavors and textures.
To satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s something fruity and something sweet, guaranteed to make your taste buds dance with delight. Whether it’s a fresh fruit salad or a decadent dessert, you’ll find the perfect ending to your picnic feast.
Welcome to Picnics in Darling

Hey there! Let me tell you about two amazing food options you can enjoy at Viljoensdrift in Robertson, South Africa. They have something for cheese lovers and kids alike!
If you’re a cheese enthusiast like me, you’ll love their Artisan Cheese Platter. Trust me, it’s a true delight! Picture this: a fantastic selection of five artisanal Klein River Cheeses. Yum! But wait, there’s more. You also get freshly baked bread, add a little bit of crunch with their spicy beetroot chutney and crunchy cucumber pickle, and top it all off with their farm-grown nasturtium pesto. Can you taste it already? Pure deliciousness.
Now, if you have a little one with you, Viljoensdrift has something special just for them – the ‘Playful kid’s basket’. It’s perfect for a fun picnic! Your kid will get a portion of cheese, a freshly baked muffin (yum!), some popcorn, dried apples (a healthy treat), a juice box, and even packets of animal feed. They’ll be in food heaven!
So, next time you make a trip to Viljoensdrift in Robertson, don’t forget to indulge in these mouthwatering options. You won’t regret it!
If you’re looking for a fun and relaxing day out, why not consider a picnic on the Breede River at Viljoensdrift? You can enjoy a boat ride along the river, find a cozy spot by the banks, or simply relax on the deck. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?
Picnics at Viljoensdrift offer a variety of options to suit your taste. You’ll find a delightful selection of breads, cold meats, pâté, preserves, snacks, sweets, and seasonal salads to choose from. The best part is that you get to pick and customize your own picnic basket. It’s like a buffet of deliciousness!
Each picnic basket is designed for two or three people and comes with fully biodegradable and compostable utensils. This means you can enjoy your picnic without worrying about any harm to the environment. That’s a win-win, if you ask me!
Now, let’s talk about the important details. The price of your picnic basket will depend on what you choose to include. You have the freedom to create your own perfect picnic experience. And if you’re wondering about the wine, don’t worry! You can purchase wine and beverages to complement your picnic spread.
Unfortunately, you can’t bring your own food to Viljoensdrift. But with all the mouth-watering options they have available, I’m sure you won’t miss it!
Oh, and what about the kids? While there isn’t a specific kids’ basket available, the deli is self-help, which means you can create a picnic that everyone will enjoy.
Now, let’s talk about when you can enjoy this wonderful experience. Viljoensdrift is open from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
