Discover African Relish

Situated in the scenic Great Karoo in the Western Cape, Prince Albert is a lively town with well-preserved Victorian and Art Deco buildings nestled in a fertile valley at the foot of the majestic Swartberg mountains. The town is blessed with natural water flowing from the mountains, providing nourishment for its gardens, orchards, and surrounding farms. This abundance of natural resources has attracted an influx of creative and adventurous residents, resulting in a vibrant culinary scene. At the forefront of this culinary revival is African Relish, a remarkable cooking school located on the main road. Here, food enthusiasts can immerse themselves in a variety of culinary experiences, learning from local farmers, talented chefs, and kitchen experts.

With its modern, well-equipped kitchen, breathtaking views, and beautiful garden, African Relish creates the perfect setting for a range of unique culinary adventures. Students not only learn to cook, but they also have the opportunity to enjoy the dishes they create and contribute to the preparation of dinners served to guests. The school emphasizes the use of locally-sourced ingredients, showcasing the diverse flavors of South Africa. A popular course is Karoo Tapas, where students can even forage for ingredients in the onsite vegetable, herb, and flower garden.

The school’s owners, sisters Madri and Orscilla Luttig, also run the Chef’s Café, a cozy restaurant open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. The café offers a varied menu, including delicious wood-fired pizzas.

Good to know: African Relish offers two types of courses. The Anytime cooking courses, such as Karoo Classics or Vegetarian, can be booked at short notice and range from half-day to full-day experiences. There are also scheduled weekend courses with guest chefs, like Neil Jewell, Nina Timm, or Stef Marais, which may be longer and include specialized activities.

Jeremy’s

Get ready to experience something fresh and exciting at Jeremy’s, a brand-new restaurant in Prince Albert. This unique establishment was created by the celebrated chef and charcutier, Jeremy Freemantle. With his deep connections to the town’s African Relish culinary school and his renowned Real Food Company, Jeremy brings his expertise and passion to the table. The restaurant breaks away from the traditional Karoo decor you find in many eateries in the area. Instead, it embraces a sleek and contemporary interior that perfectly complements a globally-inspired menu.

When my friends and I visited Jeremy’s just a week and a half after its opening, we were greeted by a surprise guest – the famous Bertus Basson, who had just arrived on his Harley! The ambiance was buzzing with excitement.

The menu at Jeremy’s offers 10 to 15 dishes, depending on what Jeremy finds fresh and in-season. These dishes can be enjoyed as both main courses and starters. There are also two delectable desserts to choose from. We couldn’t resist trying out the Asian chicken salad, the Korean fried chicken wings, and the beef tataki. Each dish was bursting with incredible flavors and showcased the freshest ingredients.

One aspect that stood out to us was the exceptional service. The staff at Jeremy’s are professional and attentive, ensuring that every guest feels well taken care of. They add an extra touch of sophistication to the dining experience.

If you’re planning a road trip adventure, Jeremy’s is definitely a place worth stopping at. The combination of fresh and delightful food, modern atmosphere, and outstanding service make it a standout dining destination in Prince Albert.

Welcome to Weltevrede Fig Farm!

Hey there! Let me tell you about one of the coolest fig farms you’ll ever visit. It’s called Weltevrede Fig Farm, and it’s tucked away in a beautiful valley below the Swartberg. Trust me, getting there is an adventure in itself. Just follow a dirt road for about 20km and you’ll find this hidden gem.

At Weltevrede Fig Farm, you can learn all about how figs are grown, harvested, and processed. If you visit during fig season (which runs from end-January to end-April), you’ll get to see figs being dried in the sun. It’s fascinating to discover the differences between the little Cape brown figs and the big purple Adam figs. With around 2,000 fig trees, this place is a serious business. But don’t worry, the atmosphere here is completely laid-back and relaxed.

After exploring the farm, make sure to stop by the charming little tea shop for a refreshing beverage and treat yourself to a slice of heavenly fig tart. Trust me, it’s worth it! If you’re looking for accommodation, Weltevrede Fig Farm has self-catering cottages that are completely off-grid. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and unwind.

Weltevrede Fig Farm is a supplier of fresh figs to Woolworths, and you can also purchase their delicious dried fruit, jams, and preserves from their farm shop. But let me tell you, the real star of the show is their boxes of fresh figs. Once you try them, you’ll be hooked! Make sure to stock up because you’ll definitely want more.

Enter Henk van Zyl, the proud owner of this incredible meat-lover’s stop along the N1 that runs through town. As you step into Henk’s shop, you’ll notice it’s not the trendiest spot in town. Besides the delectable dried fruit, preserves, and mouthwatering pies, you’ll find a treasure trove of honey, olives, rusk, boerseep (farmer’s soap), crocheted items, and more.

However, the star of the show remains the biltong – fresh, tender, and perfectly spiced. This dried meat is so addictive that one taste will make you keep coming back for more. Henk takes great pride in his biltong. It’s naturally dried, made in-house, and never outsourced. If you’re not familiar with this South African delicacy, fear not. The friendly staff at Karoo Biltong will happily guide you through the biltong experience.

And that’s not all! Karoo Biltong offers a few special products that will tantalize your taste buds. The garlic droëwors and the chili bites, in particular, are local favorites. They also offer kudu and springbok biltong – a perfect way to experience different flavors. Don’t miss the opportunity to stock up on these unique treats!

If all these mouthwatering delicacies aren’t enough to entice you, there’s another reason to make a pit stop. Parked right outside is a mobile coffee truck by the name of Koffie en Kie. Indulge in a cup of freshly brewed coffee before continuing your journey.

Welcome to the Yellow House!

Hey there! You can’t miss the Yellow House with its vibrant yellow walls. Here at our guesthouse in Prince Albert, I’m Petro Lotz, and I’m all about serving up delicious farm-to-fork meals. I go the extra mile by carefully planning and planting our garden veggies and herbs to create menus that change every second month. The best part? Our ingredients come from local farms, including meat and cheeses from my husband Joubert, who’s a cheese wizard.

From savory duck spring rolls to tender lamb shank, crunchy fried burritos to flavorful Thai green curry with crisp vegetables, our menu is truly a culinary adventure. We do source a few ingredients like calamari from far away, but we like to keep things as local as possible. And let’s not forget our incredible pizzas! For a taste of the Karoo, try our Casablanca pizza topped with slow-roasted lamb and served with tzatziki on the side. And when the figs are in season, you won’t want to miss our delicious burnt-butter fig tart.

At the Yellow House, we also offer cooking classes from time to time. You can learn some of my special Karoo farmstyle cooking techniques and recipes. It’s such a fantastic experience that it might just make you want to stay here and live a life close to the land.

Karoo Blessings

“It’s a whole new taste,” I say. I’m Marian Esterhuizen, one of the co-founders of Karoo Blessings. Our small home kitchen in the remote town of Merweville produces Italian-style nougat. My friend Suzaan Theron and I have crafted a nougat that melts in your mouth, completely distinct from the French-style nougat we all know in South Africa.

The motivation for starting our nougat business came from the decade-long drought that has plagued the Karoo. We wanted to make a difference. That’s why a portion of our earnings is donated to the farmers of Merweville. Our operation is entirely homemade, a true testament to the power of community. It’s more than just a business; it’s a miracle that has transformed lives in our town.

We sell our nougat at various Karoo farm stalls, but we can also arrange for it to be delivered to your doorstep through a courier service. Just send us a WhatsApp or an email, and we’ll take care of the rest. If you’d like, you can also visit our nougat factory for a cup of coffee and a chat when you’re in town. Just make sure to give us a call beforehand.

We offer an array of 13 unique flavors, some of which are quite adventurous and unconventional. When you order a box of seven nougat bars, priced at R240, we’ll surprise you with which flavors you’ll receive. And remember, R30 from each purchase goes directly to supporting our local farmers.

Welcome to Karoo Kombuis!

Let me tell you a story about a group of flight attendants from SAA. When they retired from serving chicken or beef on planes, they settled in Prince Albert and had a brilliant idea. They decided to open a little restaurant that would serve traditional Karoo food. And let me tell you, it was a hit!

Karoo Kombuis is still going strong after all these years. It’s a no-frills kind of place, nothing fancy. But what it lacks in fancy decor, it makes up for in delicious food and a one-of-a-kind vibe. The restaurant is cozy and old-school, and you can expect dishes like slow-roasted Karoo lamb, chicken pie, bobotie, and a plate of three Karoo-reared meats with veggies. And of course, you can’t miss their famous malva pudding for dessert.

When you walk in, you’ll see a menu board outside reminding you to bring your own wine. That’s right, it’s BYO when it comes to drinks. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself enjoying the night until late – Karoo Kombuis has a way of making you feel right at home, like you’re at a big family gathering. You might even spot some folks in wigs and dresses having a good laugh.

But here’s the catch – they only accept cash, so make sure you have some in your pocket when you go. And it’s always a good idea to book ahead, as they tend to get quite busy.

If you’re in the mood for a unique dining experience that celebrates the flavors of the Karoo, make your way to Karoo Kombuis. You won’t be disappointed!

Welcome to Gay’s Guernsey Dairy!

Not too long ago, I used to see people from Prince Albert lining up at Gay van Hasselt’s award-winning dairy to get their hands on some fresh Guernsey milk. The dairy is located at the end of the town’s main road. Even today, local residents come by every morning between 7am and 12pm to refill their containers with milk or yoghurt. The delicious creamy goodness is produced by a special herd of Guernsey cows, and you can actually meet these lovely creatures just around the corner from the shop. Speaking of which, the shop is a cheese lover’s paradise. They have stocked fridges filled with mouth-watering cheeses, farm-fresh yoghurts, milk, and cream. If you have even the slightest fondness for cheese, you absolutely have to visit this place. You can sample the cheese first and then buy as much as you want, so make sure to bring an empty cooler box to load up on your favorites.

Gay started her dairy in 1990 with just three cows. Since then, her operation has grown, and she now offers a wide variety of cheeses. From feta and mozzarella to a Parmesan-style cheese aged for over a year, there’s something for everyone. They also have Cheddars with varying degrees of mildness or strength, easy-going Goudas, and an 18-month-aged Gruyere-like cheese called Queen Vic. Despite the growth, the dairy still has the heart of a small-town farming operation. The 35 cows in the herd are known personally by name, and they freely graze on natural pasture. Everything produced at Gay’s Guernsey Dairy is naturally made, unpasteurized, and free of hormones and antibiotics. I’ve got to mention how amazing their drinking yoghurts are. Trust me, you should buy more than you think you want!

If you’re planning to visit, here are the dairy’s opening times: Monday – Friday, 7am – 4pm; Saturday, 7am – 3pm; Sunday, 7am – 12pm. And if you have any questions or want to learn more, you can contact them at 023 541 1274 or info@gaysguernseydairy.com. You’ll find Gay’s Guernsey Dairy at 4 Church Street in Prince Albert.

Oppikoppi Padstal & Slaghuis

Ever heard of Leeu-Gamka? It’s one of those little towns you might not know about unless you happen to pass through it on your way from Cape Town to Joburg. But let me tell you, it’s worth making a stop. As you drive by, keep an eye out for the signs, because Oppikoppi Padstal & Slaghuis awaits you.

This place is more than just a farm shop. Sure, you can grab a coffee and enjoy some good country food. And don’t forget to stock up on snacks for the rest of your journey. But the real gem is the slaghuis (that’s butcher, by the way). It’s the talk of the town, and for good reason.

When you step inside, you’ll find an abundance of Karoo lamb, beef, and wild game biltong. In the winter months, that is. But if you have some time to spare, take a seat and prepare yourself for a treat. The braaied meat here is legendary. People can’t stop raving about it.

Imagine juicy, perfectly grilled meat served with roosterkoek or chips and a delicious milkshake. It’s the perfect meal for a road trip. And trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Wondering when you can visit? Oppikoppi Padstal & Slaghuis is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 2am. On Saturdays, they close a bit earlier at 9pm. And on Sundays, you can stop by between 9am and 9pm.

If you want to get in touch, just give them a call at 068 511 7189. And to find this hidden gem, head to N1, Leeu-Gamka, in the Great Karoo region of the Western Cape.
