Now that you have the inside scoop on all the amazing activities waiting for you in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, it’s time to embark on your own adventure. So go ahead, immerse yourself in the beauty, history, and thrill that this incredible destination has to offer!
When it comes to the suburbs of Cape Town, there has always been a clear division between the South and the North. People from the Southern suburbs often get anxious when they have to venture beyond what is jokingly referred to as “The Boerewors Curtain,” which is said to be located around Century City.
I must admit that I am one of those people who feel a sense of unease when I have to drive to the Northern Suburbs. To me, it feels like embarking on a mini road trip where getting lost is a real possibility. So, when I was given the opportunity to explore what lies beyond this metaphorical curtain, I made sure my phone was fully charged to rely on Google Maps. As I embarked on this journey, I couldn’t help but imagine how the early pioneers felt when they left Cape Town for Stellenbosch.
Hey there! How about grabbing a delicious boerewors roll at Stodels in Bellville?
Guess what? The Northern Suburbs has so much to offer. Don’t let those speedy white bakkies scare you away from exploring this awesome place and having a blast at a langarm jol. Trust me, it’s not as intimidating as it seems. I had a fantastic time, and now I’m thinking of making these mini-roadtrips a regular thing. If you want to follow in my footsteps, here are 20 cool things to do in the Southern Suburbs.
1. Get your groove on and go dancing
“When in Rome,” they say… I always like to immerse myself in local traditions when I visit a new place. And let me tell you, there’s one tradition in this part of the world that really caught my attention: langarming. Now, let me warn you, it’s not for the faint-hearted or those of us with two left feet (like me). But even as a spectator, it’s an absolute blast. Trust me, it makes for a memorable night out.
What struck me the most was the sheer size of the dance floors. They’re like disco ice skating rinks! And here’s the crazy part: despite the massive crowds, it’s like this weird dance magic prevents anyone from crashing into each other. Seriously, it’s like watching a perfectly unchoreographed dance show. I’ve never seen anything like it!
But here’s what really impressed me: hardly anyone was glued to their phones. Nope, everyone was fully present and engaged. That’s the beauty of langarming. It’s a social experience that brings people together in a way that’s hard to find nowadays.
So, there are plenty of awesome spots to choose from when it comes to langarm dancing, but let me tell you about my top picks. First up, there’s Nikita’s. This place has the best-priced drinks and an awesome shooter bar with some seriously interesting shooters. Plus, they also serve homemade hamburgers and boerewors rolls for when you get those late-night munchies.
Another great spot is Klipwerf. It’s a bit quiet on Fridays, but on Saturdays, it really comes alive with a slightly older crowd. I had such a blast there! And last but not least, there’s Danskraal. This place is the biggest and most crowded, but trust me, it’s worth it. They play a wide variety of music, from 80s hits to hip hop and even Afrikaans pop. So, no matter what kind of music you’re into, you’re guaranteed to have a good time at Danskraal.
Oh, and here’s a little insider tip for you. Many of these langarm jols actually let you bring your own drinks, so grab a bottle of brandy and a 2-litre Coke, and you’re all set for a night of dancing. It’s a party tradition!
If you’re still not sure which langarm jol to check out, I highly recommend reading this awesome blog. It’s a brilliant and funny guide to all the best spots. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
2. Visit a garden centre
These days, garden centers are not just about buying plants and fertilizers. You can also have a good meal, go shopping, and let your kids have fun on the jungle gym. Stodels in Bellville offers all of this and more. They have a café with affordable meals and lots of activities for the little ones. The play areas are conveniently located near the café, so you can keep an eye on your kids while you enjoy your meal. There’s also sand art, an animal farm, mini-tractor rides, and giant water balls. If your kids are interested in reptiles, they’ll love the snake park. It costs R25 to enter and you can see 50 different reptiles on display. Make sure to stop by the craft shop too, it’s full of handmade goodies and art pieces that you’ll be tempted to take home. If you want to get in touch with Stodels, you can call them at 0219191106 or visit their website at stodels.com.
I took a little trip to Joostenbergvlakte and discovered the amazing Cape Garden Centre. It’s located right next to Bugz Play Centre and the Motor Museum, so there’s plenty to see and do in the area. The Village Centre is a great place to shop, with a variety of shops to choose from. You can pamper yourself at the beauty salon, admire artwork at the art gallery, explore a wine cellar, or find all your pet supplies at the pet supply store. They also have knickknack and craft shops, coffee brewers, and a store where you can buy local goods. And if you’re feeling hungry, the pet-friendly Bamboo Garden restaurant serves light meals and refreshments. On Wednesdays, they even have special deals for pensioners. If you’re visiting on the weekends, you can grab a quick snack or enjoy some delicious ice cream from the kiosk outside.
Contact: You can reach them at Tel 0219884137 or visit their website at capegardencentre.co.za.
Look at these amazing options for a fun day out!
1. Explore pet-friendly venues
If you have a furry friend, you don’t have to leave them behind when you go out and have fun. The Bamboo Cafe at Cape Garden Centre welcomes pets, so you can enjoy a delicious meal while your furry pal makes new friends. And if you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained, head to Stodels in Bellville. They have a fantastic playground and even a mini train that will keep the little ones busy for hours while you relax and enjoy a cup of coffee.
2. Enjoy a day in nature
If you love the outdoors, you’ll be delighted to know about the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Spanning over 309 hectares, this beautiful reserve is home to 562 different plant species and supports a critically endangered vegetation type. You can explore a variety of trails, ranging from easy to more difficult, and take in the breathtaking views of the entire Peninsula. Bird lovers will also be thrilled to spot 137 different species in the reserve. Pack a picnic and unwind at one of the designated picnic areas, or simply sit back and admire the panoramic views. The lookout point and picnic table are wheelchair accessible, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a day out in nature. You can enter the reserve through Totius Street or Meyboom Avenue, and the entrance fee is R15 for adults and R8 for pensioners and children aged 3-17.
4. Hop on your bike
Did you know there are more than 70 kilometers of smooth trails that wind through the beautiful wine farms in the Durbanville Wine Valley and alongside the Tygerberg Nature Reserve? Whether you’re a beginner or a serious biker, there are plenty of options for everyone. One of the great routes for beginners is the Meerendal cycle route (21km). You’ll ride through vineyards, fynbos, and beside dams and blue gum forests. It’s a real treat! Another option is Bloemendal’s cycle route. It’s short, but suitable for all fitness levels. After your ride, you can enjoy a generous wine tasting or maybe even some sushi. If you’re looking for a central starting point, check out Hillcrest Farm’s cycle trail (7.6km). From there, you can easily access the Contermanskloof, Majik Forest, and Meerendal trails. The trail takes you through a fruit orchard and vineyards, offering beautiful views along the way. For a more challenging ride, try the Durbanville Hills cycle route (40km). Starting at D’Aria, this trail involves some serious climbing, but the birdlife and rare plants along the way make it worth it.

Let me tell you about this amazing place I discovered called Rust-en-Vrede. Back in the 1840s, it used to be a prison and police headquarters, but now it’s a National Monument that celebrates art and culture. The Durbanville Cultural Society is the proud owner of this beautiful building and grounds.
Once you step inside, you’ll be greeted by an array of creative wonders. There’s an art gallery, where you can admire incredible artworks. And if you’re interested in clay and ceramics, you’ll be delighted to know they have a museum and a gallery specifically dedicated to these crafts. Isn’t that cool?
But that’s not all! Don’t miss the chance to explore the full extent of your artistic potential by signing up for art classes or mosaic classes. Imagine how rewarding it would be to create something beautiful with your own hands!
Feeling peckish? No worries! You can relax and enjoy a quiet moment in the café. Sip on a cup of tea or even indulge in a glass of wine while you savor a delicious meal. The atmosphere is enhanced by the soothing melodies of classical music. It’s the perfect place to let your creativity flow and rejuvenate your spirit.
I can’t wait to go back to Rust-en-Vrede. It has quickly become my favorite spot in the Northern Suburbs. In fact, I’m considering signing up for mosaic classes myself! It’s a great way to unwind and express yourself. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
Oh, and here’s a helpful tip: The best place to park is at Rust-en-Vrede’s designated parking lot, located off Church Street. It’ll save you the hassle of trying to find a spot.
If you have any questions or want to learn more, you can contact Rust-en-Vrede at Tel 0219764691. You can also visit their website at rust-en-vrede.com. They have all the information you need to make the most of your visit.

Whether you’re into Moroccan or Mexican, sushi or Thai, or even Indian or Italian cuisine, they have a class for you. Each class includes a starter, mains, and a dessert, along with some amazing sauces. Oh, and the best part? You can bring your own wine! These cooking classes are held at their cooking studio in Durbanville, but make sure to book in advance as there’s a limit of 12 people per class.

From music concerts to theater performances, you’ll find something that suits your taste. So why wait? Get your tickets and enjoy a night filled with laughter, music, and incredible performances.
The Barnyard Theatre is a great place to catch a show at the Willowbridge Centre in Tyger Valley. You can enjoy musical performances by talented local musicians, covering songs from various genres like Queen, Billy Joel, Grease, and Hollywood hits. They also have occasional appearances by local bands and comedians. Bring your own picnic basket or opt for their affordable pizzas and party platters, which you can order in advance. There’s a drinks bar and coffee bar for refreshments.
Contact: Tel 0219148898, barnyardtheatre.co.za
8. Time for a drink
When it comes to watering holes, the Northern Suburbs have plenty to offer. While The Hollow Tree chain is well-known (locals say the best Eisbein is served at the Old Oak branch), I found three more interesting options to explore. The Palms in Brackenfell is a large establishment where you can have a braai, dine at the restaurant, order a pizza and watch rugby on big screens, or enjoy live music by local bands. It’s very family-friendly and always buzzing with people. I had a great time at The Speakeasy Saloon in Durbanville, which has a fun atmosphere and shares interesting facts about the Prohibition era. Their menu is extensive, featuring tapas, burgers, steaks, and pizzas. They even serve a nostalgic drink called Snakebite, a mix of cider and lager. Just remember to sip it slowly! For fans of alternative and 80s rock, The Rabbit Hole is the place to be. They host live music nights, pool competitions, open mic events, and Tequila Tuesdays.

Oh, and did I mention the delicious Indian meals? Munir, the chef from Pakistan, makes mouthwatering dishes using the freshest spices. You must try his rotis – they’re absolutely amazing!

Another fun option is watching an outdoor movie. It’s a great way to relax and have a good time.

They set up outdoor movie nights at Hillcrest Quarry, Century City, and Meerendal Wine Estate. And get this: you get to watch the movies under the stars! How cool is that? 13. Get your run on
Hey there! So, I wanted to tell you about these super cool Park Runs happening in Bellville and Durbanville. They take place on Saturdays and let me tell you, they’re fantastic. I recently went to the Jack Muller/Dani Uys Park in Bellville and oh boy, it’s amazing! I didn’t run because let’s be honest, running is not my thing, but I had the best time strolling along the pathways. And guess what? There were picnic benches, trees, and even guinea fowl! People were out and about, walking their furry friends on leashes, and it felt so safe and enjoyable. Oh, and let’s not forget about the gym equipment that you can use for free and the massive jungle gym for the little ones.
If you head to Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville, you’ll find another awesome Park Run. The course there is pretty cool. You start by going around the lower vineyards, then you’ll come across a lovely grass section below a dam filled with chirping birds. After that, you’ll make your way up to the upper vineyards and come back down to the lower vineyards. The finish line is close to the restaurant, where you can treat yourself to a delicious cappuccino and a well-deserved breakfast. Just a heads up, though, no furry friends are allowed at this Park Run. Safety first, you know?
If you want more details, you can check out their website at parkrun.co.za. Trust me, these Park Runs are an absolute blast! So, why not give them a try?
Take a look at these photos: a beautiful park, picnic tables, and a stunning view. Amazing, right?
14. Search for great deals
Voortrekker Road has a reputation for car dealerships (I even bought my first car there), but it also offers many other exciting bargains. You can find Chinese markets, hat shops, toy stores, second-hand furniture shops, and plastic stores. And that’s not all! You can even get a tattoo or have your hair and nails done. How cool is that? I heard they offer a “Matric Package” for only R45, which includes hair, nails, toes, and eyebrows. Amazing, right? But wait, there’s more! If you’re in need of a bargain exhaust pipe or a new set of tires, Voortrekker Road is the place to go.
Guess what? I drove down Voortrekker Road during rush hour in Cape Town, and guess what? There were hardly any cars! It was such a pleasant drive, and I wasn’t nearly as annoyed as my fellow city dwellers on the busy N1 highway. So, if you’re tired of dealing with all the traffic between Century City and Durban Road, why not take a detour and try Voortrekker Road instead? And hey, while you’re at it, you can make a pitstop at the new Food Inn – they have the best naan bread and curry in town!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the famous Twelve-Mile Rockstone at the corner of Durban and Voortrekker Road. I think it might have been replaced by a black stone covered in stickers advertising a local clinic. But fun fact: when you’re driving along this road, you’re actually following the same route that people in oxwagons used to take on their way to Stellenbosch. Pretty cool, huh?
15. More Sushi, Less Braai
“I’ve been noticing something interesting lately,” says the sushi chef at Yuz Sushi in Bellville. “More and more people from the Northern Suburbs are really getting into sushi. 16. Let’s play golf!
Did you know that the Bellville Golf Course has been around since 1958? It’s amazing! This place is nestled in a valley and offers breathtaking views of the Hottentots Holland mountains. And there’s more! They have canals, dams, and trees all around the course. But be careful, because there are some tricky water hazards and sneaky bunkers waiting for you. It’s like a surprise around every corner! At the club, you’ll find a fancy Pro Shop, a cozy bar, a delicious restaurant, a big practice area, and a putting green. And if you need some extra help, they have motorized carts and professional caddies. The fees for visitors start at R190 for 9 holes and R285 for 18 holes. What a deal!

Back in 1976, I hacked away at the Port Jackson bushes and shrubs to create something truly special: the Parow Golf Course. This place isn’t just any old golf course, though—it’s a hidden gem nestled in nature’s embrace. With 18 holes of pure parkland goodness, it’s the perfect spot for a day of leisure and relaxation.
As you make your way through the course, you’ll encounter a tapestry of water features, each one a natural work of art. And don’t be surprised if you spot a few feathered friends along the way, because this place is a bird-lover’s paradise.
But that’s not all. We’ve got an array of fantastic amenities to make your experience even more enjoyable. Step into our Pro Shop, where you can find everything you need to up your game. And if you need a little refreshment, our halfway house is there to satisfy your cravings.
And let’s not forget about our practice areas, where you can fine-tune your skills and get into the swing of things. We’ve got a practice putting green, a chipping area, and even a practice bunker next to the 10th tee. No excuses for not being on top of your game!
After a day out on the course, you’ll want to unwind and take in the stunning views. That’s where our bars and lounge come in. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the magnificent vistas of the Tygerberg Hills and Table Mountain.
Now, let’s talk numbers. On Mondays and Tuesdays, you can play a full 18 holes for only R155 (excluding public holidays). It’s a steal, really. If you can’t make it on those days, don’t worry. Our fees start at R155 for 9 holes and R260 for a full 18 holes.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your clubs, head over to Parow Golf Course, and experience golf like never before. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. For more information and bookings, give us a call at Tel 0219302160 or visit our website at parowgolfclub.co.za.
Did you know that GrandWest Casino isn’t just for gambling? It’s a place where you can have a good time even if you’re not into betting. I’ve been there for concerts before, although I have to say that their bar service during those shows leaves a lot to be desired! But if you have kids, you might have taken them to the ice skating rink or the bowling alley. They also have a theater and movie screenings, so there’s plenty to do. And when it comes to food, they have a wide variety of options. From family-friendly spots like Spur to delicious Indian and Asian cuisine, you won’t go hungry. They even have a Food Court where you can grab affordable meals and snacks. Plus, most of the places are open 24/7, except for the skating rink. So you can have fun any time you want.
If you need to get in touch with them, you can call them at Tel 0215057777 or visit their website at suninternational.com/grandwest/
