20 Gems of the Cape South Coast Wine Region

Winona Griggs

Discover the Hidden Treasures of the Cape South Coast Wine Region

As I stand along the majestic shores of the Atlantic, I am captivated by the boundless beauty of the Cape South Coast wine region. This extraordinary area boasts seven distinct districts that are filled with wonder and inspiration. Allow me to introduce you to these hidden gems – Elgin, the Overberg, Walker Bay, Swellendam, Lower Duivenhoks, Plettenberg Bay, and finally, Cape Agulhas, where the African continent meets the ocean.

When it comes to winemaking, the Cape South Coast has a secret ingredient – the gentle touch of the ocean. The salty breeze that caresses the vineyards infuses every grape with a touch of marine magic. The result is wines that tell a story of their seaside origins, bursting with vibrant acidity and the pure essence of minerals. You see, the constant oceanic influence acts as a natural air conditioner, slowing down the ripening process and allowing the flavors to intensify. And let’s not forget about the ancient, unforgiving soils that add to the challenge of growing grapes here – but it’s precisely these harsh conditions that make the wines truly exceptional.

Unveiling Elgin

Welcome to Elgin, also known as “little Burgundy” among wine enthusiasts. This beautiful region boasts a cool climate, making it the perfect home for star grapes like chardonnay and pinot noir. But Elgin has more to offer than just these favorites. With its high-altitude and dryland vineyards, this area receives plenty of rainfall, ensuring the success of aromatic varieties like sauvignon blanc and riesling.

Discover Paul Clüver Estate

When it comes to exceptional chardonnay and pinot noir, one name stands out: Paul Clüver Estate. This family brand, now in its fourth generation, has deep roots in Elgin, dating back to 1896. Pay a visit to their home, De Rust farm, where you can enjoy their cozy tasting room. In the winter, gather around the fireplace inside, and on sunny days, bask in the shade of the oak trees outside. Treat yourself to tapas made from locally sourced ingredients and fresh produce straight from their garden at the Clüver Restaurant.

Wine: Paul Clüver Estate Chardonnay 2020

Sip on this delightful wine, which unfolds with silky textures, cool sunshine, and a vibrant citrus profile. All perfectly balanced with subtle notes of honeyed brioche.

Explore the Wonders of Cape Agulhas

Have you heard of the southernmost point for growing grapes in South Africa? It’s an area called Elim, which is a Moravian mission settlement established in 1824. Most of the vineyards are located here, thanks to the unique maritime climate. The strong ocean winds that blow through the region have a significant impact on the grapes.

Let me introduce you to Strandveld Winery.

Strandveld Winery stands as the southernmost winery in all of Africa. Its vineyards, nestled in the vast Agulhas plains, create a breathtaking scene bathed in soft light. If the wind isn’t too strong, you can even enjoy the view from the veranda, which overlooks the tranquil gardens. For a truly unforgettable experience, consider staying the night in one of their cozy vineyard cottages.

Now, let’s talk about their wine. One standout is the Strandveld Adamastor 2020. This enchanting blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon is named after the sea god known for wind and storms. It captures the essence of the cool climate it’s grown in, with a touch of oak that adds a unique depth. The result is a wine that’s rich in minerality and refreshingly crisp.

Before you plan your visit, take note of their opening hours. From Monday to Thursday, you can drop by between 8am and 5pm. On Fridays, they close an hour earlier at 4pm. If a Saturday trip suits you better, they open at 10am and close at 3pm. Whenever you decide to go, make sure to give them a call at 028 482 1902 to confirm their availability.

To find Strandveld Winery, head to Die Damme Road in Elim, Bredasdorp. It’s a magical place worth exploring, so don’t hesitate to buy a bottle or two before you leave.

My family has been working this land for generations. We have wetlands here, where you might even spot some hippos. We were among the first to plant vines in the Elim ward 25 years ago.

Now, I invite you to come visit our vibrant destination. We have so much to offer, including tasting platters, a farm shop filled with wonderful gifts, and cozy cottages with a view of the stunning Agulhas Plain.

I want to tell you about this little wine region in South Africa called the Breede River Valley. It’s not as well-known as some of the other wine regions, but it has its own unique charm. The Breede River Valley includes areas like Buffeljags and Stormsvlei, as well as some smaller wards that branch off from the main town of Swellendam. Swellendam is a historic town that was founded way back in 1743.

Even though the Breede River Valley is a bit further inland than some of the other wine regions along the South Coast, it still benefits from the river that runs through it. This river is like the lifeblood of the valley, and it helps to moderate the temperature and create the perfect conditions for growing grapes and making wine.

Let me introduce you to Olivedale Wine Estate.

We planted our first vines in 2012, and our commitment to nature remains unwavering.

As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by an incredible sight – vineyard beds made of round river stones, from which bush vines and aloes emerge. The cellar seamlessly blends into the landscape, as it’s constructed from the same stones. This architectural marvel was designed by owner and renowned architect David Trafford, who is also behind De Trafford Wines in Stellenbosch. The talented winemaker Charla Bosman adds: “We’re working with very interesting, Mediterranean grapes, and we’re having a lot of fun doing so!”

Bramon Wine Estate

Imagine sitting at a table right in the middle of their endless vines, surrounded by the majestic Tsitsikamma Mountains. Bramon Wine Estate holds the distinction of being the first to plant vines in this area back in 2000. Today, you can come here to not only sample their exquisite wines but also indulge in their delightful restaurant. And if you’re feeling adventurous, they even offer picnics amidst the scenic beauty.

Let’s talk about their incredible wine, the Bramon Cap Classique 2019. This unique cap classique is made entirely from sauvignon blanc grapes, which is quite unusual. With this one, you can expect the zesty flavors of crisp, freshly cut apples and a wonderfully refreshing bubbly sensation.

For your convenience, Bramon Wine Estate is open from Monday to Friday, 11 am to 5 pm, and on weekends from 11 am to 5 pm as well. If you have any questions or wish to make a reservation, you can contact them at 073 833 8183 or email them at therestaurant@bramonwines.com.

You’ll find Bramon Wine Estate located along the N2 in The Crags, Plettenberg Bay. So why wait? Plan a visit and experience the magic for yourself.

Can’t wait to try their fantastic wines? Well, you’re in luck! You can buy their wines now and savor them in the comfort of your own home. Give them a try, and you won’t be disappointed.

Luka Vineyards

This is a charming, family-owned vineyard in the heart of the Garden Route. Laura and Phil Harvey, the owners, embarked on a voyage across the world and discovered their own piece of paradise here. They fell in love with it and decided to settle down. You can experience the magic they found by visiting Luka Café. You can have a delightful breakfast, lunch, or picnic while enjoying the stunning views of the vineyard and mountains. Luka Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is their special wine, which you can only find at their restaurant. However, you can purchase other wines from the Plett Wine Route at their farm shop. They are open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9am and 4pm. If you have any inquiries, you can reach them at 073 833 8183 or laura@lukavineyards.co.za. You can find them at HKV80 Harkerville, Plettenberg Bay.
