I think it’s important to mention that Riyaz made it clear that Masala Dosa is a vegan-friendly place. He pointed out that Indians have been vegan or vegetarian for centuries, so they have plenty of options for those who follow that lifestyle.

Thali has set menus for both lunch and dinner. For lunch, they offer a set menu where you can choose a main dish from six options. It comes with five side dishes like dhal, basmati rice, garlic butter naan bread, tomato salsa, and cucumber and pomegranate raita. The main dishes include butter chicken, butter paneer, yoghurt lamb curry, and a panch phoran fish curry (the fish and lamb are highly recommended!). And if you order dessert, you’ll get a delightful surprise too (a little reward for eating so much!). They also have some interesting twists on traditional Indian drinks, like their Dirty Lassis, which add rum to the classic Indian milkshake. Tip: If you like oysters, you have to try their version with a Cape Malay dressing.

When my friend and I had lunch at Thali, we were blown away by the delicious main dish and the generous spread of five sides. It was a treat for both our taste buds!

The Charles Café is like walking into a close friend’s house. As soon as you step through the front door, you’re met with a warm and cozy dining room. There’s a crackling fireplace, beautifully restored antique chairs, flickering candles, and charming wallpaper that creates a delightful atmosphere. The indoor seating area is small, only accommodating about 15 people at most, but that’s what makes it so special, especially during the winter months. When we visited on a Malay Monday (every Monday from 12:00 to 22:00), we were lucky to find a spot by the fireplace. We decided to try their tasting menu, which included 5 mains and 2 desserts for R225 per person. Let me tell you, the portions were incredibly generous!

Out of all the dishes we tried, our favorites were the bobotie made with Farmer Angus pasture-reared beef, the flavorful butter chicken, and the Cape Malay lamb curry topped with toasted coconut and sliced banana. For dessert, we had the option of a Cape Malay koeksister, an orange and poppyseed malva pudding, or a traditional boeber served in a teacup. Our personal favorite was the boeber. So, what do you get for this incredible price? Well, you start off with delicious starters like samoosas, chilli bites, and an onion bhaji. For the main course, you get to choose between four options. We tried the Thai mussel and pork curry, which had a unique combination and a flavorful sauce. Another option is the mother-in-law masala beef with potato, which is spicy but not as hot as the name suggests.

There are two more options available – butter chicken with cauliflower and roasted cashew nuts, and a vegetarian cauliflower and chickpea curry. For dessert, you can indulge in pumpkin fritters. Yum!

The Durbanville branch of MoKsh is so incredibly popular that when I tried to make a reservation for that evening, I was out of luck – not once, but twice! Clearly, it’s a favorite spot for curry enthusiasts in the Northern Suburbs. The name MoKsh means freedom or liberation, and this restaurant takes great pride in providing the utmost satisfaction when it comes to their North Indian cuisine.
