Hey there! So, here’s the deal: TripAdvisor is a popular website where people rate accommodations. It’s great to hear what others think, right? But sometimes it can be tricky to figure out which one is really the best. That’s where I come in. My name is Pippa de Bruyn, and for the past 18 years, I’ve been reviewing accommodations for famous travel guides like Frommer’s and The Telegraph. When I’m researching a destination, I check out TripAdvisor and other sites to find the top-notch places.
Let’s Talk About the Best Views
Number 1: Desert Breeze
TripAdvisor ranked it as the best out of 39 specialty lodgings. Impressive, right?
When I first entered the Desert Beeze in Swakopmund, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking desert view. It was the kind of view that captivated your attention for hours, as the colors changed and danced with the shifting light.
But it wasn’t just the view that impressed me. The accommodations themselves were something special. Each freestanding bungalow was designed with spaciousness in mind. The open-plan layout created a sense of freedom, while the separate lounge area offered a cozy space to relax. I loved how the sliding doors opened onto a small viewing deck, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the natural beauty surrounding me.
Inside the bungalow, I found everything I needed for a comfortable stay. There was a well-stocked mini bar, free Wi-Fi for staying connected, and coffee and tea facilities for a morning pick-me-up. The bathroom was also impressive, with a large walk-in shower that provided a refreshing start to my day.
Despite being just a five-minute drive from the historic center and beachfront, the Desert Beeze felt like a world away. The tranquility of the Namib Desert enveloped me, and I couldn’t help but feel at peace in such a serene environment.
Hey there! You won’t have to worry about breakfast because it’s served in the huge main building, where you can enjoy the same amazing view. However, for lunch and dinner, you’ll need to take a little drive into town. No need to stress, though, because the staff is more than happy to help you out by recommending and booking a place for you. Just keep in mind that reception closes at 7pm, so make sure to plan accordingly.
If you’re looking for some privacy and don’t mind taking a little walk, I’ve got the perfect room recommendation for you. The bungalows are spread out and set along the view, so you won’t have to worry about your neighbors being too close. Room 12 offers both privacy and a great view, so it’s definitely worth considering.
In terms of cost, you can expect to pay around R1125 per person for a room when sharing and including breakfast. But don’t forget to check online for any special deals or discounts that might be available. You never know, you might find an amazing bargain!
Now let me tell you about the best-value boutique hotel
2. The Delight
Guess what? It’s ranked as the number one hotel out of 19 on Tripadvisor!
Welcome to The Delight in Swakopmund!
When you first approach the hotel, you might not be too impressed by the plain exterior. It’s located in a central part of town, but it doesn’t stand out. However, don’t let that deter you! As soon as you step inside, you’ll find yourself in a trendy and stylish paradise.
The interior of The Delight is like stepping into a hipster’s dream. There’s a neon sign that proudly declares “We Are Here” against a massive map of the world. The furniture is a delightful mix of mismatched chairs, and the walls are adorned with interesting wallpapers. The lighting adds to the ambience with naked light bulbs hanging from wire frames.
The rooms at The Delight are truly something special. The design team has done a fantastic job of creating unique and stylish spaces. When you walk into your room, you’ll feel as if you’re stepping into a charming guest house rather than a typical hotel room. The attention to detail is evident throughout.
The staff at The Delight are both efficient and friendly. They go above and beyond to make your stay memorable. As a pleasant surprise, during the winter months, they provide a turn-down service with hot-water bottles. It’s the little things like this that make your experience even more special, especially considering the price.
One of the highlights of staying at The Delight is the breakfast. They offer a delicious spread that will satisfy all your cravings. From fresh oysters to bubbly, they truly know how to start your day off right.
If you’re looking for a great place to stay that’s close to the beach and other attractions, you’re in luck. This place has plenty of parking available and is within walking distance of the beach and other places of interest. It’s definitely worth the price and has received high ratings on various online sites.
Here’s a tip for choosing a room: all the rooms are pretty much the same, but the family rooms have an extra loft-mezzanine area with twin beds. If you’re someone who appreciates art and wants to stay at a boutique hotel with lots of character, you might also want to consider Villa Margherita.
The cost is R1201 per person sharing for bed and breakfast.
The best value on the beachfront
Beach Lodge
Tripadvisor ranks it as the 5th best hotel out of 19.
If you’re like me and love looking out at the ocean, but prefer a more calm and relaxing atmosphere rather than a fancy and extravagant one, then Beach Lodge is the perfect choice for you.
Beach Lodge is a small hotel with a unique design that resembles a ship. It has a simple and functional interior, consisting of two standard family rooms, seven luxury rooms, and 10 twin rooms.
What sets Beach Lodge apart is its incredible location right on the beach. The rooms have large windows and sliding doors that open onto beautiful lawns leading to the sandy shore.
While the water here is too rocky for swimming, the real attraction is the breathtaking view. You can enjoy magnificent sunsets from almost every room in the hotel, making it a truly remarkable experience.
I’m here to tell you about a wonderful place called The Wreck restaurant. It’s located five kilometers north of town and the beach, which might make you feel a bit far away from all the action. However, don’t let that deter you, because The Wreck offers spectacular views from its second-floor location and is a favorite among locals.
If you’re looking to stay at The Wreck, I have a pro tip for you. The ground-floor rooms have direct access to the beach, which can be a major perk. The only room without a sea view is called Kolmanskop, but don’t worry, it’s a luxury family room. Out of the three family rooms available, I highly recommend Eduard Bohlen. It not only offers immediate beach access but is also a great value at R2950 per night for two adults and two children.
Now, let’s talk about the cost. Prices start from R950 per person, and this includes bed and breakfast. It’s definitely a good deal considering the stylishness and comfort of the place.
Speaking of stylishness, I also want to mention another great option in Swakopmund – the Swakopmund Luxury Suites. It’s ranked number two out of 39 specialty lodgings on Tripadvisor. These suites are known for their elegance and charm, making them the perfect choice for a luxurious stay.
So, if you’re looking for a unique and stylish experience in Swakopmund, The Wreck restaurant and Swakopmund Luxury Suites are definitely worth considering. They offer breathtaking views, direct beach access, and a touch of luxury that will enhance your trip. Don’t miss out on these amazing options!
When it comes to accommodations in Swakopmund, there are some well-known options like The Strand and The Delight. However, if you’re looking for something truly special, I’ve got just the place for you. Let me introduce you to Swakop Luxury Suites.
These 20 luxurious suites are located in a three-storey 1930s apartment block that has been cleverly repurposed by the talented local architect, Sanderine Bierman. The result is a stunning blend of Scandi-style elegance and modern comfort. As soon as you step into one of these suites, you’ll be blown away.
The color palette of white, pale grey, taupe, and cream with occasional pops of turquoise creates a soothing and stylish atmosphere. The clean and uncluttered lines, shaggy rugs, and good lighting add to the overall sense of elegance. And let’s not forget about the stylish bathrooms that are perfect for pampering yourself.
While there are no sea views from the suites, the location is unbeatable. You’ll be just across the road from the beachfront promenade and a stone’s throw away from the historic center. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Now, let’s talk about breakfast. While it’s not served on-site, you’ll be provided with vouchers that you can redeem at four different coffee shops within easy strolling distance. One of these coffee shops is Café Anton, which happens to be right next door. This charming German stalwart is a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
So, if you’re looking for a unique and luxurious place to stay in Swakopmund, look no further than Swakop Luxury Suites. With its Scandi-style elegance and prime location, it’s the perfect choice for an unforgettable stay.
Here’s a tip for you: Keep in mind that there’s no elevator in this hotel, and all the rooms are located upstairs. Some of the suites offer beautiful views of palm trees and the promenade.
Let’s talk about the cost: You can expect to pay R975 per person for a shared room, and that includes bed and breakfast.
Now, let me tell you about the best historic hotel:
5. Hansa Hotel
Ranked as the 3rd best hotel on Tripadvisor out of 19 hotels.
When it comes to the Hansa Hotel in Swakopmund, let me tell you, it’s a real gem. I can’t help but be filled with delight every time I visit because, believe it or not, this place hasn’t changed one bit. It still holds onto its refined, old-fashioned charm from the colonial era. You won’t find a hotel with this kind of authentic atmosphere anywhere else. Can you imagine? It has been welcoming guests since way back in 1905! That’s over a hundred years of history!
But here’s something interesting: the Hansa we see today is the result of the hard work of Elisabeth Rummel and her two husbands between 1954 and 1988. They transformed it into the marvelous establishment it is now. I think visiting the Hansa Hotel is like taking a trip back in time. It’s almost like staying in a living museum. The experience is truly immersive. Trust me, you won’t find anything else like it.
The rooms in the hotel have been modernized, so you can expect some variation in decor from room to room. But I’ll be honest, most of the decorations are pretty plain. However, I must say that everything is well-maintained and in good condition. You won’t have any complaints there.
The staff at the Hansa Hotel are top-notch professionals. They know how to take good care of their guests and make them feel welcome. And let’s not forget about the location. It’s right in the heart of town! You won’t have any trouble getting around and exploring all that Swakopmund has to offer.
If you’re ever in Swakopmund, don’t miss out on the legendary Hansa dining room. It’s known as one of the best restaurants in town. Even if you’re not staying there, I strongly recommend that you treat yourself to a meal here. It’s definitely worth it! And if you are staying at the hotel, make sure to book a table in advance.
Room tip: Personally, I’m a big fan of the ground-floor rooms that open onto the courtyard. They have a cozy vibe and offer easy access to the hotel’s amenities. However, the Hansa tends to get fully booked quickly, so it’s best to take whatever room you can get. If the Hansa is unavailable, the Europa Hof is a charming alternative. It may not be as luxurious, but it has its own unique, cozy appeal. Plus, it’s more affordable, starting at R870 per person sharing B&B. You can find more details on their website, europahof.com.
Cost: If you decide to stay at the Hansa, expect to pay at least R1220 per person sharing B&B. However, it’s worth checking their website for any special deals or discounts.
Best guest house
6. Villa Margherita
P\
Tripadvisor No. 8 of 52 B&BS/Inns
Villa Magherita in Swakopmund is truly something special. It’s located in a beautiful historic building from the German colonial-era, and the interior design is filled with art, antiques, and fascinating objects. The walls boast vibrant colors that may seem a bit over-the-top to some, but if you prefer a more subtle and minimalist look, you might want to consider staying at Swakopmund Luxury Suites instead. However, if you appreciate individualistic charm and character, Villa Magherita is the perfect choice for you.
There are several accommodation options to choose from, all arranged around a delightful courtyard garden. This garden is a tranquil oasis filled with birdsong, offering plenty of cozy corners for relaxation. The ambiance is far more captivating and personal compared to the other boutique hotel in the area, The Delight. At Villa Magherita, every guest receives exceptional personalized service.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to try their breakfast or dinner, but from what I’ve heard, they won’t disappoint. They even have a masseuse on-site, which sounds amazing. Just keep in mind that parking isn’t guaranteed, so make sure to reserve a spot when you book your room. The villa is conveniently located near the town center, so you probably won’t need to use your car much during your stay.
Tip: They only have eight rooms, and since it’s a popular place, most of them were already occupied when I visited. However, I really enjoyed staying in the ‘Queen’ room, which is tucked under the eaves.
Price: It costs R1050 per person for a bed and breakfast.
Best-value self-catering option
7. Swakopmund Lifestyle Hotel Apartments
Tripadvisor ranks it 14th out of 39 specialty lodgings
Welcome to Swakop Lifestyle Apartments, located in beautiful Swakopmund!
Our apartments are designed with your comfort in mind, offering 22 modern and impeccably clean units. Whether you’re traveling alone or with a group, we have a variety of options for you, including studios and one, two, or three-bedroom apartments.
What sets us apart is our commitment to providing exceptional service. We understand that you may have questions or need assistance, which is why our friendly staff is available around the clock to assist you. From carrying your luggage to answering any inquiries you may have, we’re here to ensure that your stay is hassle-free.
While our apartments come with fully equipped kitchens, we go the extra mile to make your experience even more enjoyable. Start your day with a complimentary breakfast, stay connected with our free Wi-Fi, and relax knowing that your apartment will be serviced daily.
Our ideal location puts you just a 10-minute walk away from the beachfront area, as well as shops and restaurants. And with secure parking available, you can explore Swakopmund at your leisure.
At Swakop Lifestyle Apartments, we may not have a pool, but we believe that our exceptional service and prime location make up for it. Come and experience the comfort and convenience of our apartments for yourself!
Here’s a tip for your room: I personally recommend the studios over the one-bedroom apartments. The bedroom in the apartments is located on a mezzanine level, accessible by a flight of stairs. Keep in mind that this setup may compromise privacy, as one of the bedrooms in the two- and three-bedroom apartments is not very secluded. If you’re looking for an outdoor space, you’ll need to book the three-bedroom apartment with a deck.
Let’s talk about the cost: The studios cost R945 per person when shared. As for the apartments, they start at R540 per person when shared. And yes, both options include breakfast.
Introducing the finest luxury apartments
8. Strand Hotel
Tripadvisor ranks it second out of nineteen hotels
Hey there! Let me tell you about the fabulous Strand Hotel in Swakopmund. It’s a fancy four-star hotel that opened at the end of 2015, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer for this place. Swakopmund is now on the map as a top spot for all you fancy international travelers.
The hotel is right on the beach, so the location couldn’t be better. And get this, you can easily walk to the town’s historic center from here. Talk about convenience!
Now let’s talk about the hotel itself. The public spaces are absolutely gorgeous, with breathtaking views of the ocean. But don’t worry, even though it’s fancy, it’s also super chill and inviting. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they don’t mind if you hang out in your beachwear. Rock those trunks and slip-slops!
Now let’s dive into the rooms. They’re beautifully decorated and have all the amenities you could dream of. But here’s the scoop: the standard rooms are a bit on the small side. And the bathrooms? Well, let’s just say they’re pretty tiny and only have a shower. But hey, who needs a huge bathroom when the rest of the hotel is so stylish?
I gotta tell you about these three awesome restaurants you can choose from! First up, Farmhouse Deli has the biggest breakfast selection you’ve ever seen. Then there’s Brewer & Butcher, which brews its own beer. And if you’re into wine, Ocean Cellar has the BEST wine selection in town! Trust me, you won’t be disappointed with any of these options.
Now, if you’ve been in the desert for a while and you’re craving a sea view, I’ve got the perfect recommendation for you. It might cost you a bit, but it’s totally worth it. In my opinion, it’s the best choice.
Oh, and here’s a tip for you: if you’re booking a standard room, make sure to ask for one with a beach view. It doesn’t cost any extra, but it’s so much better than a garden view. And if you want an even better view and a bigger bathroom, go for the luxury room. Yeah, it costs a bit more, but it’s totally worth the extra money.
Speaking of money, the cost starts at R1606 per person sharing for bed and breakfast. Just keep that in mind when planning your stay.
Now, let’s talk about something else worth checking out. Have you heard of Swakopmund Sands? It’s definitely worth a look!
Let me tell you about another hotel that I absolutely love. It’s one of the most stylish choices in town and offers a comfortable stay in a great location. You can easily walk to the promenade and historic center from here.
Not only is it a fantastic place to stay, but it’s also surprisingly affordable. However, it’s worth noting that they don’t have an on-site restaurant.
Price: Starting from R835 per person sharing including breakfast.
10. The Secret Garden
Now, let me introduce you to my favorite bed and breakfast spot – The Secret Garden. This charming guest house has just nine rooms, all with their own bathrooms. Some face a beautiful courtyard, while others have a view of the garden. There are also two luxurious suites with private balconies. Plus, they have a restaurant on-site, so you don’t have to go far for a delicious meal. And the best part? They welcome dogs!
Price: Starting from R480 per person sharing including breakfast.
11. Hotel Zum Kaiser
If you’re looking for a reliable option in a central location, Hotel Zum Kaiser is a great choice. One room that caught my eye is Room 24 – it had an amazing view and orientation.
Price: Starting from R1047 per person sharing including breakfast.
12. The Stiltz
Have you heard of Desert Breeze? It’s a beautiful place near the coast. There, you’ll find charming bungalows on stilts that offer a rustic-chic experience. These bungalows provide stunning views of the dry Swakop riverbed and the ocean. And the best part? They’re just a short distance away from town.
Interested in staying? The cost starts at R840 per person sharing, and that includes bed and breakfast.
13. Atlantic Villa
If you’re looking for something on the outskirts, you might want to check out Atlantic Villa. This boutique guest house is worth considering. It not only offers self-catering options but also has a pool and bicycle rentals. For the best experience, go for their sea-view rooms or junior suites.
And the cost? It starts at R820 per person sharing, which includes bed and breakfast. Plus, if you book for two nights or more until June, you can enjoy a 40% discount and pay only R492 per person.
14. Cornerstone
Cornerstone is another great option. It’s a popular bed and breakfast in town that offers immaculate gardens and well-maintained rooms. But the real deals here are the self-catering apartments scattered around town. These apartments are the perfect choice for travelers who prefer more independence.
Price: Starting at R900 per person for bed and breakfast, or starting at R1690 for self-catering accommodation for two.
15. Bon Hotel
This elegant four-star hotel has the appearance of a boutique establishment, but it’s located in an unexpected place – on the third floor of a secluded building on a busy road, away from the city center. The rooms with a view of the sea are the ones truly worth it; the “dome” rooms overlook an indoor sports arena and gym.
Price: Starting at R690 per person sharing. Be sure to check for any online specials.
16. Dünenblick
The Dunenblick in Swakopmund was a contender for my selection, but unfortunately it’s currently booked up for the next nine months. If you’re planning a trip to this area towards the end of the year, you might want to inquire about this remarkable three-bedroom, self-catering house with its breathtaking view of the desert. There are also a duplex and two-bedroom apartment in the back garden, but I didn’t have a chance to check them out.
Price: Starting from R1250 per night; the house was priced at R3200 per night.
