The Backpack is full of charming features, like mosaic mirrors and tables, an array of plants (I especially loved the Hand of Fatima plant holders), unique items to purchase, and plenty of books to satisfy the avid reader. There are cozy couches and poufs for lounging, a pool table, and a bar stocked with an impressive selection of craft beers. The rooms are named after well-known South Africans – from Madiba to Koos Kombuis to Natalie du Toit – and each one is vibrant and lively, with coordinating wallpaper and duvet covers. And to add a touch of comfort, my room even had its own mini-fridge and hot chocolate sachets, not to mention the largest bathroom I’ve ever encountered in a backpackers’ lodge.

And if you needed any ingredients, the convenience of the nearby Kwik-Spar made life even easier. I couldn’t have asked for a more convenient setup.

Let me tell you about The Randy Warthog, a really cool bar and restaurant that’s located inside the backpackers, but anyone can go there. It’s a great place to relax after a swim in the pool. You can grab a beer or a glass of wine and chill on a comfy sun-lounger or one of the tables, which used to be doors. The best part is that the food they serve is really affordable. On Wednesday evenings, you can enjoy a delicious plate of braai food for just R60. And if you’re there for breakfast, which costs R25, you’ll be treated to a fantastic buffet under a beautiful skylight. They have cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast, jams, Marmite, and even real butter! The atmosphere is really fun and modern, and it’s in a great location for exploring Green Point and the surrounding area.

Even though it’s called a backpackers, it felt more like a fancy motel that’s perfect for people visiting Cape Town for work. The whole place is filled with vibrant colors like orange, green, purple, and blue. They even match the doors, the towels, and the dishes! The rooms are small, but they have everything you need if you just want a place to crash at night. If you don’t have a car, no worries! It’s within walking distance of taxis, buses, and the lively nightlife on Claremont Main Road. But if you do have a car, they’ve got two parking spots for you, nicely tucked away behind gates. The heart of the place is the lively kitchen, where they have a wall with all the tour options. And if you’re feeling like having a BBQ, there’s a deck with a Weber grill. The whole place is modern and clean, though in my opinion, it’s more like a spot to get some rest than a typical backpackers hostel.

As for dining, the kitchen is equipped with everything you need to whip up a delicious meal. But, if you prefer to take it easy, don’t worry – there are takeaway menus available. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, making it convenient to grab a bite to eat.

The rooms at this place are awesome! They have the most comfy duvet covers, and they even give you towels. And guess what? They’ve got a bar too, with a TV and everything. But I wanted to go check out some local pubs instead, since it wasn’t too busy. The best thing is, they’ve got a big train schedule on the wall, so you can see when the next one is coming. And they also put up any cool events happening in the area. Just a little heads up, if you stay in one of the front rooms during the week, you might hear some traffic noise in the morning. But other than that, it’s a really quiet and super convenient place to stay if you want to explore the awesome historical town of Simon’s Town.

During my stay, I witnessed a group of travelers preparing a communal dinner, which created a warm and inviting atmosphere. If you’re not keen on cooking, there’s a café at the entrance that serves breakfast and light meals from 07h00 to 20h00 every day. On certain evenings, themed meals such as pizza, curry, or a braai are offered (there’s even a Weber grill available on the deck if you prefer to cook your own). Stoked Backpackers is conveniently located next to Muizenberg station, making it a great choice if you’re traveling by train. However, if you’re a light sleeper, be aware that you may hear the early morning trains as the station is situated right next to the tracks. The rooms at Stoked Backpackers are quite spacious and furnished with lovely linen, towels, and complimentary soap. Tea and coffee are also provided. Some of the dorm rooms feature loft-style sleeping areas, which add an extra touch of comfort and privacy. To be honest, I never thought I’d come across a backpackers in Salt River, let alone one right on the circle. But man, Wish U Were Here is something else! Where else can you find a coffin coffee table (or a suggestion box!), a dorm room with a freaking mini-golf course, and a bedroom that looks like a hospital ward, complete with a drip and X-ray lighting? Or how about sleeping in a boat or taking a bath under a lamp-post light (inside your room)? Sadly, I didn’t get to sleep in the boat or have an X-ray light, but my room was just as cool. It had an African theme, with kudu horns on the wall, animal skins on the chair, and a balcony with a table and chairs. There’s artwork all over the place, along with hanging plants in the bathrooms and even an outdoor shower. The communal area has a bar where you can get cheap and tasty drinks, and there’s always good company to be found. You might even run into Karl, one of the owners, who’s lived in Salt River his whole life and knows some fascinating stories that he’ll gladly share over a whiskey or two. The kitchen is small but get the job done. Plus, you can just head downstairs and grab a gatsby or roti from Dollars. They’ve got breakfast covered too, with cereals, fruit, yogurt, and a mouthwatering poached egg on toast with ham. The only downside is that the morning traffic can get pretty noisy, depending on which room you’re in. Trucks zoom down the road and slam on the brakes when they reach the circle (but don’t worry, they provide earplugs). Other than the early-morning ruckus, there’s simply nothing else like Wish U Were Here. Seriously, go check it out for yourself, and keep an eye out for Anchovy, the adorable cat who was rescued from abandonment and now calls this place home. He’s bound to steal your heart, just like the place itself.
