Hey there! Did you know that evenings aren’t just for winding down? They can actually be full of excitement and adventure too! I’ve got some awesome activities that will have you racing around your city, boogying in an ice rink, and even climbing walls that move. So, let’s seize the night this summer and make the most of our evenings!
Here are 14 activities in Joburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Port Elizabeth that you can enjoy well into the evening:
Joburg
1. Carlton Centre
Hey there! Have you ever wanted to see breathtaking views of Joburg from above? Well, I’ve got just the thing for you! Let’s talk about the Carlton Centre, an iconic building in downtown Joburg that offers an epic experience.
First things first, did you know that the Carlton Centre is currently the tallest building in Africa? Pretty cool, right? Well, get this – there’s a new kid on the block! The Pinnacle in Kenya is set to take the crown as Africa’s tallest building in 2019. Talk about reaching new heights!
But let’s focus on the Carlton Centre for now. Imagine standing on the 50th floor, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over Joburg. You can experience this magical moment for just R15! That’s right – for a small fee, you can ride the elevator all the way to the Top of Africa. From there, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping panoramic views of the city. Trust me, it’s a sight you won’t want to miss!
And here’s the best part – the Carlton Centre has telescopes on-site. So not only can you admire the city from above, but you can also get a closer look at its famous landmarks. How cool is that? It’s like having your own personal tour guide!
Now, I know what you’re thinking – how do I get there? Well, there’s a super convenient way to reach the Carlton Centre. Hop on a City Sightseeing bus and enjoy a guided tour of the city on your way there. It’s a safe and hassle-free option that ensures you don’t miss a thing.
But let’s not forget the history of this incredible building. The Carlton Centre has been around since 1973, housing various businesses and offices. It’s a true testament to the city’s rich heritage. Located on 150 Commissioner Street, Marshalltown, the Carlton Centre is definitely worth a visit.
2. Night trail run
Did you know that neon lights are not just for Saturday nights, but also for weeknight adventures? I recently discovered Kinetic, a company that hosts monthly night trail runs in Johannesburg. These runs take place at various locations such as the Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead, Bryanston Country Club, the Randpark Golf Club, Houghton Golf Club, and Parkview Golf Club.
There are two routes to choose from: an eight-kilometre race starting at 19:30 and a shorter four-kilometre route that begins at 19:40. It’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself and explore the city at night. Plus, there are some exciting prizes up for grabs! The top three runners in each category (under 40 and over 40) receive vouchers, and everyone who finishes the race gets a well-deserved medal.
Now, here’s the catch: you must wear a headlamp during the run. Don’t worry if you forget to bring one, though. They sell headlamps at the registration desk. It’s essential for your safety and to help you navigate the trails in the dark.
The registration fee is R70 if you sign up before race night. However, if you miss the early registration, you’ll have to pay R100. It’s always better to plan ahead and save some money, right?
If you’re interested in participating or want to know the upcoming trail run dates, visit kinetic-events.co.za.
3. Yoga under the stars
Hey there! Did you know that you can take your evening workout session to a whole new level by practicing yoga under a starry sky? Well, now you do! The Space Yoga and Fitness Studio has a special event called Yoga Under the Stars happening soon.
During this event, you’ll get to experience a relaxing vinyasa flow yoga session guided by a guest yogi named Sydney King. It’s going to be a magical evening, taking place on October 28, 2017, from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
Now, here’s the best part: after the yoga session, you can stick around and enjoy some delightful wine and tapas. Doesn’t that sound amazing?
Just a heads up, though: mats are limited, so don’t forget to bring your own. If you’re interested in attending, make sure to follow the event on Facebook or give them a call at 0729055553.
Durban
4. DurbaNite Race
Hey there! I’ve got an awesome event to tell you about – the DurbaNite Race. It’s a super cool event that happens every month on the last Friday. What’s even better is that it’s organized by Phindi Gule, a famous radio personality and fitness enthusiast.
When you join the DurbaNite Race, you get to run in a vibrant atmosphere, wearing colorful running gear and glow-in-the-dark accessories. It’s a fun way to stay healthy and active while enjoying the energetic vibes of Durban. You’ll also get to groove to the beats of DJs and admire the moves of dancers. The best part? It’s a family-friendly event that aims to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
The race offers two options – a 5-kilometer run or a 10-kilometer run. The entry fee is R60 for the 5-kilometer race and R80 for the 10-kilometer race. The DurbaNite Race starts at 18:00 and takes place at the Durban Country Club, a beautiful venue just a kilometer away from the beachfront. It’s also conveniently located near the Moses Mabhida and Kings Park Stadium.
Got any questions? Feel free to give them a call at 0715212546. So why wait? Come join the DurbaNite Race and experience the thrilling energy of Durban!
And that’s not all! If you’re a nature lover and enjoy a good trail run, then you’ll absolutely love the trail run at Giba Gorge. So keep reading to find out more.
When you run on trails instead of hard surfaces like pavement, there’s less impact on your joints. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and get some exercise. Plus, it’s less monotonous than running on the same old roads.
If you’re looking for a fun and affordable way to challenge yourself, I highly recommend checking out the Giba Fun Trail Run Series. It takes place on the first Wednesday of every month, and it only costs R10 to participate. All you need to do is show up at Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park between 18:00 and 20:00.
But that’s not all. Giba also offers free social night rides for anyone who loves biking. The rides start at 17:30, and everyone is welcome to join. The only catch is that non-members will need to pay R60 for their bikes. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your headlamp for both activities! If you have any questions or want to learn more, you can reach out to the park by calling 0317691419 or 0794514898, or by sending an email to [email protected]
6. Laser tag in Ballito
If you’re looking for some adrenaline-fueled fun, Sugar Rush Park in Ballito is the place to go. And Laser Rush is one of their most exciting activities. It’s like paintball, but with lasers. Picture this: a vast outdoor arena with walls that have been taken down, allowing you to strategize and outmaneuver your opponents.
Laser Rush offers different game modes to suit your style. You can go solo or join a team and battle it out. The laser tag guns have multiple settings, adding another layer of excitement to the experience.
They’re open from Tuesday to Sunday, with their closing time usually at 6 PM. However, they occasionally stay open until 8 PM, so you might get lucky and extend your fun.
As for the cost, it’s R65 per person for 30 minutes of playtime and R100 per person for a full hour. That’s a reasonable price for high-octane entertainment!
If you’re an adult and want to take your laser tag skills to the next level, Laser Rush Ballito is organizing club or league nights. These special events will even include a braai (barbecue) and drinks. Keep an eye on their social media accounts or reach out to them by email at [email protected] or by phone at 0832335165 for updates on these exciting nights.

It’s an excellent way to stay active and have a blast with your friends or family.
Wherever you are, there are always amazing activities waiting to be discovered. So get out there, embrace the fun, and make memories that will last a lifetime!

At Gravity Indoor Trampoline Park in PE and East London, you can experience the thrill of bouncing on interconnected trampolines. It’s an adventure like no other!
But if you’re craving an even wilder challenge, then I’ve got something for you. How about joining the Gravity Dodgeball League? The Sundays River, known as Nukakamma by the Khoisan people, means ‘grassy water’ due to the consistently green and grassy banks. It’s a picturesque sight to behold. Photo by Sundays River Adventures.
If you’re looking for a relaxing daytime activity that can be a great way to unwind, consider taking a two and a half hour cruise down the Sundays River. While it may not be an adrenaline-pumping experience, it offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the serene beauty of the river. And what could be better than taking in a stunning sunset along the way? You have the option to bring your own food and drinks or order from the Sundays River Ferry menu, ensuring you have everything you need for a delightful cruise. It’s worth noting that peak season rates will increase to about R420 per person from 1 November 2017, so it’s a good idea to plan your trip before then to take advantage of the current price. For bookings, you can get in touch via email at [email protected] or give them a call at 0414680140.
Cape Town
9. The Cape Wheel

In just 10-12 minutes, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable view of the Mother City, both during the day and at night. The best time to experience this sheer delight is at sunset, so be sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds. Durban’s ice rink is a historic landmark, with roots dating back to 1955. Recently, it underwent renovations and is now an Olympic-size facility that attracts tourists from all over the world. 13. Indoor climbing
Who would have thought that climbing would become an Olympic sport? I mean, I certainly didn’t see that one coming! But hey, here we are, with climbers gearing up to compete in Tokyo 2020. Pretty cool, right?
Now, if you’re anything like me, you might be wondering where you can give this whole climbing thing a try. Well, have I got some news for you! There’s this place called City ROCK, and they have branches in Cape Town and Joburg. No matter what level of climbing experience you have, they’ve got you covered.
So, what do they have to offer? Well, brace yourself, because it’s pretty awesome. They’ve got top rope and lead climbing, automatic belay walls, and even bouldering areas. Talk about variety! Plus, they have something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned climbers.
Oh, and guess what? City ROCK Cape Town is moving to Paarden Eiland in December 2017. So, keep an eye out for more details on their website. I can’t wait to see what their new location has in store!

If you’re in Durban, I’d recommend checking out the Southern Rock Climbing Centre in New Germany. It’s a great workout, and you can adjust the speed and angle to make it as challenging as you want. The centre is open until 9 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays, and until 10 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you’re an adult, a day pass will cost you R110, while scholars only have to pay R80. Give them a call at 0317053842 for more information.
14. Another fun activity you can try is cycling at night. It’s a unique experience that allows you to explore the city in a whole new way. Just make sure to stay safe and always wear reflective gear.
Earlier this year, I had an amazing experience joining the Maboneng City Cyclists on their cross-country journey from Joburg to Durban. It was an incredible adventure, riding our bicycles through the beautiful landscapes and exploring new places along the way. The memories we made will stay with me forever.
But it’s not just about the big trips. Every Thursday night, I join the Maboneng City Cyclists for our regular rides through the streets of Johannesburg. We meet outside Love Revo at 17:00, and once everyone is ready, we hit the road at 19:00. It’s always a fun and exciting time, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the thrill of exploring the city on two wheels.
If you happen to be in Durban, I highly recommend checking out Bike and Bean. They are open until 18:00 from 1 October for the summer, and they offer bike rentals for just R50 per hour. All you need to leave as a deposit is either your ID or Driver’s License. And while you’re there, don’t forget to treat yourself to a delicious cup of their single origin Africa coffee. It’s the perfect way to refuel and relax after a day of cycling. You can contact them at Tel 0820657096.
And if you’re looking for more cycling adventures in Durban, make sure to check out Curiocity Hostels. Every Thursday, they organize a night cycle that takes you through the city and the beachfront. The cycle starts at 18:30 and costs R200. It’s a fantastic way to experience the beauty of Durban at night and see the city in a whole new light.
In Cape Town, there’s this amazing event called Moonlightmass. It happens once a month and it’s organized by Critical Mass Cape Town. They’re all about promoting bike riding in the city. It starts at 8:00 PM and goes on until 11:00 PM, so you have a whole evening to enjoy the beautiful views of the city at night. They plan a special outing for every full moon, and the next ones for this year are on October 5th, November 4th, and December 3rd.
Now, let me tell you about another cool thing you can do in Cape Town. It’s called the Sunset Full Moon Cape Canopy adventure. It’s a pretty awesome experience.
Get ready for an incredible adventure like no other! Imagine zipping through the mountains under the glow of the moon on a Cape Canopy Tour. It’s an exhilarating experience that will leave you breathless!
We’ll start off with a delicious light meal at our base, so make sure you come hungry. Then, we’ll take you up to the stunning Kogelberg Biosphere, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views as the sun sets. And once darkness falls, it’s time to turn on your headlamps (don’t forget to bring your own) and zoom through the night sky beneath a twinkling blanket of stars.
Our tour features eleven heart-pounding slides, some of which stretch over an impressive 300 meters. Each slide ends on a specially-designed platform that hangs on the cliffs and slopes covered in beautiful fynbos above the Riviersonderend Gorge. You won’t find a more thrilling way to spend your summer!
The tour costs R895 and starts promptly at 18:00. Please note that it’s only available on select Saturdays: November 4, December 2, and February 3, 2018. The entire tour takes approximately four hours, and you’ll be back down the mountain by 22:00.
