13 rated spots in McGregor for a retreat

Hey, it’s time to hit the reset button! McGregor, a peaceful town in the Western Cape, offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The best part? You might struggle to find a cell signal here, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the stunning sights.

Why McGregor is worth considering:

• McGregor is a hidden gem when it comes to accommodation options. You’ll find charming self-catering places, many of which are old buildings that exude a sense of history. Keep in mind that the town is low on larger accommodations, so plan ahead if you need extra space. While there aren’t many bed and breakfasts, you’ll discover two retreats and a wealth of holistic therapists to help you unwind.

• Unlike other destinations, McGregor doesn’t have a high or low season. It’s lovely to visit year-round, and you’ll always get excellent value for your money. Last year, many places boasted an impressive 80 percent occupancy rate, so don’t wait too long to secure your spot.

• Seeking relief from the hot summer sun? While not many places in McGregor have swimming pools, fear not. There’s a gorgeous dam on the town’s outskirts, providing a refreshing retreat for residents. Plus, water is in abundance here, resulting in vibrant gardens throughout town.

• McGregor is a remarkably inclusive community, offering a laid-back atmosphere that welcomes everyone. Some locals still refer to different parts of town as ‘onderdorp, middedorp, bo-dorp,’ with a preference for ‘bo-dorp’. This fusion of cultures and experiences creates a unique blend that you won’t find elsewhere.

• Need help finding the perfect place to stay? Look no further than the McGregor Tourism website or McGregor Country Getaways. These resources offer a comprehensive list of accommodations, and Mira Weiner and her team personally manage 12 self-catering houses, as well as representing many more options.

1. Wild Almond

The wild almond tree is a fascinating plant that has been around for centuries. Its scientific name is Terminalia catappa, but it is also known by various other names such as Indian almond, beach almond, and Bengal almond. This tree is native to tropical regions and can be found in countries like India, Malaysia, and Australia.

What makes the wild almond tree particularly interesting is its ability to adapt to different environments. It is known for its strong root system, which helps it survive in various soil conditions. The tree also has large, glossy leaves that provide shade and shelter for animals.

The wild almond tree produces small, green fruits that resemble almonds. These fruits have a hard shell, which protects the seed inside. The seed itself is edible and is often used in traditional cuisines. Additionally, the tree’s leaves and bark have medicinal properties and are used in various herbal remedies.

If you happen to come across a wild almond tree, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Firstly, be cautious when handling the fruits, as they can stain your hands and clothes. Secondly, while the seed is edible, it is important to properly prepare it before consumption, as it contains natural toxins.

Overall, the wild almond tree is a remarkable plant with a rich history and many uses. Whether you’re fascinated by its adaptability or interested in exploring its culinary and medicinal potential, the wild almond tree is definitely worth learning more about.

2. Red Panda

The red panda, also known as the lesser panda, is a charming and elusive creature. It is native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China and is known for its distinctive appearance and playful nature.

This small mammal, which is about the size of a house cat, has dense fur that helps it survive in its cold habitat. Its fur is reddish-brown, with white markings on its face and a long, bushy tail. The red panda’s tail is not only beautiful but also serves as a blanket to keep it warm during the winter months.

The red panda is predominantly herbivorous, with bamboo being its primary food source. However, it also feeds on fruits, acorns, and roots. It has a specialized wrist bone that acts like a thumb, enabling it to hold food and climb trees with ease.

One of the key challenges that red pandas face in the wild is habitat loss. Due to deforestation and human encroachment, their natural habitat is shrinking, which puts them at risk of extinction. Conservation efforts are being made to protect these beautiful creatures and their habitat.

If you’re lucky enough to see a red panda in the wild or at a zoo, remember to observe from a distance and avoid causing any disturbance. These animals are delicate and need their space to thrive.

Overall, the red panda is a captivating animal that captivates the hearts of many. Its unique appearance, playful behavior, and the conservation efforts being made to protect it make the red panda a species worth cherishing.

13 rated spots in McGregor for a retreat

I discovered this charming little village called Wild Almond. It’s filled with adorable thatched cottages, each with its own unique layout but with a similar cozy feel. When I stepped into one of them, I couldn’t help but notice the exquisite decor. Maureen and Dennis Higgs have truly created a classy country ambience, with a touch of luxury that catches your eye. The cream and white cottons add a cool and decadent touch, making it even more inviting.

One thing that sets Wild Almond apart is the small plunge pool nestled in a beautiful garden. Imagine relaxing by the poolside, surrounded by lush greenery and the sound of birds chirping. It’s simply enchanting. And if you’re looking for a spot to soak in the views, the deep vineshaded stoep is the perfect place to be.

The location of Wild Almond is fantastic – it’s right in the heart of the village, just a short walk away from some great restaurants. You won’t need to go too far to satisfy your cravings for delicious food.

Now, I have to point out that there is one drawback to staying at Wild Almond. Unfortunately, they don’t have a fireplace, which is a bit disappointing if you’re planning a winter getaway. Additionally, it’s important to note that this particular cottage is not pet-friendly. So, if you were hoping to bring your furry friend along, you might need to reconsider.

However, I’ve got a tip for you. If you’re coming here during the colder months and really want a fireplace or a pet-friendly cottage, you should consider booking Plum or Pepper. They offer the cozy warmth of a fireplace and welcome pets.

Now, let’s talk about the cost. The price is R350 per person when you’re sharing the cottage, with a minimum two-night stay. It’s a reasonable rate considering the comfort and charm that Wild Almond provides.

If you’re intrigued and want to learn more or make a booking, feel free to contact them at 0832719324. You can also check out their website at mcgregorvillage.co.za.

5. Temenos

I want to talk to you about a fascinating concept called ‘Temenos.’ It’s a term that has its roots in ancient Greece, and it refers to a sacred space or sanctuary. A Temenos is like a bubble that surrounds you, providing a haven for reflection, introspection, and growth. When you enter this space, it’s just you and your thoughts, free from distractions and outside influences.

Imagine stepping into your personal Temenos, a sanctuary where you can escape from the chaos of the world and focus on what truly matters to you. It’s a place where you can explore your dreams, ponder your purpose, and discover your deepest desires. This sacred space invites you to embrace your authentic self and listen to the whispers of your soul.

In today’s fast-paced world, finding the time and space for self-reflection can be challenging. We are constantly bombarded with noise, distractions, and responsibilities that demand our attention. But it is in these moments of stillness and solitude that our true selves can emerge.

By creating your own Temenos, you can carve out that much-needed space for yourself. It can be as simple as finding a quiet corner in your home, or a special spot in nature where you feel at peace. The key is to find a place where you can disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with yourself.

Once you’ve found your Temenos, make a habit of visiting it regularly. Set aside a few minutes each day to sit in silence, breathe deeply, and listen to the voice within. Use this time to reflect on your goals, aspirations, and challenges. Allow yourself to dream big and envision the life you want to create.

Remember, your Temenos is a sacred space, and you are the guardian of its energy. Treat it with reverence and respect. Keep it clean and clutter-free, both physically and mentally. Fill it with things that inspire you – books, art, music, or whatever brings you joy. Surround yourself with positive energy and create a space that nourishes your soul.

In conclusion, creating your own Temenos can be a transformative experience. It’s a powerful tool for self-discovery, growth, and inner peace. So, I invite you to find your sacred space, your sanctuary, and embark on a journey of self-exploration. Step into your Temenos and unlock the wisdom within.

We have fourteen cozy cottages surrounded by lush gardens that are so thick and full that you might find yourself temporarily lost on your way back from our on-site restaurant. It’s hard to believe that Billy Kennedy transformed this barren piece of land into the beautiful oasis it is today in just 20 years. The impact of Temenos on the village is immeasurable. It not only attracts a certain type of visitor but has also drawn in numerous resident therapists. You can schedule sessions for various therapies such as bowspring infused yoga, reflexology, holistic massage, and emotional release therapy, among others. Step into McGregor’s delightful 19th-century thatched cottages, with their small windows and thick walls. They have a unique charm. However, if you’re someone who longs for a flawless bathroom, a modern kitchen, and glass walls that open up, seamlessly connecting the living room to a spacious veranda overlooking a lovely pool and majestic mountain views, then Kite House is the perfect choice for you. Unfortunately, this is a popular spot, so you’ll have to book it when it’s available rather than when it suits your schedule. Designed by Bruno de Robillard, Kite House embodies the contemporary essence of McGregor. It exudes simplicity and elegance, with its shuttered exterior, three bedrooms, three bathrooms (two of which are en suite), and a well-equipped kitchen that’s designed for socializing while cooking. The double-volume living area gives the house an airy and spacious feel.

The master bedroom is especially impressive, featuring a folding wall that seamlessly transforms the room into part of the veranda. The owners of Kite House, a Dutch couple who have a curious penchant for kites, have adorned the walls with their unique collection. Mira Weiner professionally manages the property, ensuring a personalized check-in experience. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with homemade rusks and complimentary wine and coffee sourced from a local roastery, adding to the warm and welcoming ambiance.

Room tip: If Kite House is fully booked, be sure to inquire with Mira about the availability of Laurel Cottage, another excellent option that offers three bedrooms for the same price.

Cost: Starts from R2400 per night (minimum two-night stay). Sleeps six.

I have a friend named Craig Webster who has an amazing eye for design. He and his wife, Philien, have created a beautiful holiday home that can comfortably accommodate 12 people, even though it’s not very big. They wanted a place that would be perfect for large family gatherings, so they designed the house with that in mind. There are four bedrooms downstairs, each with its own unique style and two bathrooms to share. Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms located in two loft areas, which are built like mezzanines. Each bed is made with wrought-iron frames and has a custom made ticking duvet cover.

The living and dining areas are open and connected, with beautiful Persian rugs adding color to the earthy, cement palette of the space. From there, you can step out onto a shaded stoep, which overlooks a lovely garden filled with olive trees, rosemary, and lavender hedges. It’s a peaceful and semi-rural environment, and Craig has even created his own “Karoo jacuzzi” using a cement plunge-dam filled with borehole water. When the jacuzzi is emptied, the water is used to water the garden. To maintain the tranquil atmosphere, Craig and Philien have resisted the temptation to have the road tarred and have also removed the streetlight from outside their house.

Room tip: If you can’t stay at Intostone, you might want to ask about another house called Synergy. Craig and Philien renovated it as a project before selling it, and you might be able to rent it through Perfect Hideaways starting this month (perfecthideaways.com).

Cost: The price starts at R3800 per night, but you’ll need to stay for at least two nights.
