13 perfect country cottages in Clarens
If you’re in search of a charming countryside getaway, then you’ll love what Clarens has to offer. With its picturesque landscapes and tranquil ambiance, this small town in South Africa is the ideal destination for a relaxing retreat.
Clarens is known for its stunning natural beauty, including awe-inspiring mountain views, rolling green hills, and meandering rivers. The town is also home to many art galleries, showcasing the talents of local artists.
When it comes to choosing the right cottage for your stay, there are several factors to take into account. Firstly, you’ll want to consider the location. Some cottages offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, while others are nestled in the heart of the town, providing easy access to shops, restaurants, and other amenities.
The size and layout of the cottage are also important considerations. If you’re traveling with family or friends, you’ll want to ensure that there’s enough space for everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed. Additionally, the amenities and facilities provided, such as a fully equipped kitchen or a cozy fireplace, can enhance your stay and make it even more memorable.
In Clarens, you’ll find cottages to suit a range of budgets, from luxurious and spacious options to more affordable and cozy ones. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape with your partner or a fun-filled vacation with the whole family, there’s a cottage in Clarens that’s perfect for you.
So, if you’re ready to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the countryside, why not consider booking a stay in one of the many charming cottages in Clarens? With their idyllic settings, comfortable accommodations, and warm hospitality, these cottages are sure to provide a memorable and rejuvenating experience.
If you’re looking for a mix of sophistication and natural beauty, this town in the Free State is the place to be. But with its popularity, it’s important to plan ahead and secure the best accommodations in advance. Let me introduce you to some top-notch options to consider.
While TripAdvisor is a great resource for guest reviews, it can be challenging to compare and determine which place is truly the best. That’s why I turn to Pippa de Bruyn, a seasoned reviewer with 18 years of experience working for popular travel guides like Frommer’s and The Telegraph. She carefully examines TripAdvisor and other online platforms to assemble a comprehensive list of accommodations to consider. When it comes to Clarens, she started with a longlist of 30 options that she personally inspected. Here are the ones that made the cut.
Here’s what I discovered about accommodations in Clarens:
- During both winter and summer, Clarens is a bustling town, making it a popular destination. If you’re thinking about visiting, it’s best to book your stay as soon as the thought crosses your mind.
- Many places offer discounts from Monday to Thursday, but even midweek stays get quickly snatched up in Clarens. On weekends, there is often a minimum stay requirement of two nights.
- Thankfully, there is a wide range of accommodation options available, and many of them are of excellent quality. While self-catering accommodations seemed to dominate, there were also some fantastic bed and breakfast establishments, some of which also have self-catering facilities. However, it’s worth noting that Clarens doesn’t have any noteworthy hotels. The two available didn’t make it onto my final list.
- I focused my search on places within walking distance of the town square, where all the excitement happens. However, the options located outside of town are also worth considering, as they offer beautiful views of the distant Malotis mountains. If peace and tranquility are what you’re after, head north towards the Clarens Village Conservancy and Rooiberge.
- Keep in mind that most roads in Clarens are still unpaved, and some may have potholes. So, if you’re not driving a 4×4, be cautious.
- If you need assistance with booking, I highly recommend reaching out to Mountain Odyssey. They have an impressive selection of around 140 properties, with prices ranging from R350 to R500 per person per night. You can get in touch with Gavin Schoeman at 0826549989 or visit their website at infoclarens.com.
By considering these factors, you’ll have a much easier time finding the perfect accommodation for your visit to Clarens. Now, let’s start planning your unforgettable getaway!

In the rolling hills of Clarens lies a charming country house inspired by the beauty of Provence. Nestled on a sun-kissed sandstone ridge, this property spans 28 hectares, offering a tranquil retreat just nine kilometers away from town. But what truly takes center stage is the breathtaking natural rock swimming pool. Fed by a crystal-clear river, water cascades over the edge and into the gorge below, creating a spectacle that’s hard to resist.
As I explore this unique abode, it’s clear that artistry and creativity are the driving forces behind its design. Renowned artists Simon Addy and Lyn Hoyle have left their mark, adorning the walls with their fabulous creations. As I navigate through the home, I can’t help but notice the delightful quirks and organic layout. The kitchen, with its cozy Aga stove and underfloor heating, serves as the heart of the house. Multiple open-plan lounges on different levels invite relaxation and socializing.
The house boasts six bedrooms, four of which are en-suite. Each room has its own character, ranging from small yet efficient showers to spacious walk-in showers. For those seeking even more privacy, there’s a charming three-bedroom Karoo-style cottage on the property. Complete with its own dam-style pool and an inviting outdoor lounge area, it’s the perfect sanctuary within a sanctuary.
Sharing this house with others may pose a challenge when it comes to splitting the bill fairly. So, my suggestion is to draw lots and let fate decide. If you do decide to divide the space, keep in mind that Room 1 downstairs offers the best shower and underfloor heating, while Room 6 upstairs boasts a large bathroom, fireplace, and separate entrance. However, note that this room is not suitable for toddlers.
Now, let’s talk about the cost. The house can be rented for R6000, accommodating up to 12 people. Additionally, there’s the option of the cottage, which can accommodate up to six guests and has its own pricing at R3300. If you plan to visit during the weekdays, rates are negotiable, offering you even more flexibility and value for money.
If you’re ready to experience the tranquility and natural beauty that this country house has to offer, don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can reach them at 0846561832 or visit their website at ridgeroad.co.za. Go ahead, take that well-deserved break and create unforgettable memories in this one-of-a-kind gem.
My Favorite All-Around Place: The French Cottage
2. My Charming Getaway
When I think about my favorite place to escape to, my mind is always drawn to The French Cottage. It’s a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the countryside, surrounded by lush green fields and quaint little villages. It’s a place that feels like a fairytale come to life.
The French Cottage offers a unique experience that combines the charm of a rustic retreat with the luxury of modern amenities. From the moment you step through the door, you’re enveloped in a sense of warmth and comfort. The cozy fireplace crackles with a welcoming fire, inviting you to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea.
The cottage itself is beautifully decorated, with every little detail carefully thought out. The furniture is elegant yet cozy, creating a perfect balance between style and comfort. The soft, fluffy pillows on the bed make it hard to resist taking an afternoon nap. And the vintage-inspired decorations lend a touch of whimsy to the space.
But it’s not just the aesthetics that make The French Cottage special. It’s the little touches that set it apart from other places. The friendly staff is always ready to go the extra mile to make your stay unforgettable. They are full of recommendations for local attractions and hidden gems that you won’t find in any guidebook.
And if you’re a food lover like me, you’ll be delighted by the culinary delights that await you at The French Cottage. The onsite restaurant serves up a delectable menu of French classics and local delicacies. Every meal is a feast for the senses, with flavors that dance on your tongue and leave you craving for more.
In the morning, I wake up to the sweet aroma of freshly baked croissants and steaming hot coffee. The breakfast spread is a sight to behold, with a variety of pastries, fruits, and cheeses that cater to every taste. I savor every bite, knowing that the day ahead is filled with endless possibilities.
During the day, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. You can explore the picturesque countryside on a bike ride or take a leisurely stroll through the charming villages nearby. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even go horseback riding or try your hand at fishing in the nearby lake.
But perhaps my favorite part of staying at The French Cottage is the sense of peace and tranquility that permeates the air. It’s a place where time slows down, allowing you to truly unwind and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re sitting in the garden, listening to the birds sing, or taking a long soak in the luxurious bathtub, you’ll feel a sense of serenity wash over you.
So, if you’re looking for a place that offers the perfect blend of charm, comfort, and tranquility, look no further than The French Cottage. It’s a hidden treasure that will leave you longing to return again and again. Trust me, once you experience its magic, you’ll be hooked.
Hey there! Let me tell you about this amazing stone cottage that is full of history and charm. It’s located on a large piece of land that used to be one of the original farms in the area. The property has a rural feel with beautiful trees scattered all around, a river path that leads to a stunning overhang, and even a waterfall right in the backyard! And the best part? Despite its peaceful setting, it’s just a short 15-minute walk to the village square.
Now, let’s talk about the cottage itself. Upstairs, you’ll find an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, along with a cozy en-suite bedroom. The cottage-pane windows offer lovely views of the picturesque countryside. To access this upper level, you simply take the external staircase.
On the ground floor, there are two more bedrooms, each with their own entrance from the garden. These rooms share a bathroom and provide direct access to the beautiful outdoor space.
This cottage is truly a gem both inside and out. The previous owner was an interior decorator, so you can expect stylish and tasteful decor throughout. And the best part? It’s surprisingly affordable! The wonderful host, Julia Brownlee, believes in keeping the cottage occupied and offers some of the most budget-friendly rates in Clarens.
If you’re planning a romantic getaway, you’ll be thrilled to know that you can rent just the upstairs level for a more intimate experience. From Monday to Thursday, Julia charges only R1000 per night for this option, making it one of the most affordable and charming places to stay in Clarens… and perhaps even in the whole country!
Now, let’s talk about the cost. The cottage can accommodate up to four people at R1560 per night, and each additional person is R390 extra. It’s a great deal considering the quality and ambiance of this unique cottage.
If you’re interested in experiencing the beauty of this stone cottage for yourself, don’t hesitate to reach out to Julia at 0722910685. You can also find more information and book your stay at wheretostay.co.za.

Karen and Richard James were captivated by Clarens 18 years ago. They knew they had found the perfect place to build a weekend retreat and eventually settle down. It was a stroke of luck. Their property is right next to the Clarens Village Conservancy, so you can start hiking as soon as you step outside. This house was made for nature lovers; there’s no TV to distract you from the serene atmosphere. But don’t worry, the vibrant town center is just a short four-minute walk away. The barn-style design with sandstone accents is beautiful. Inside, the open-plan lounge is spacious and cozy with an eye-level fireplace. It connects seamlessly to the dining area and kitchen. There are three bedrooms and a loft with two single beds, perfect for kids or teenagers. Each bedroom has a comfortable double bed, and the main bedroom even has its own fireplace and en suite bathroom. If you’re planning a trip, keep this in mind: it costs R1200 per night to stay here, and it can accommodate up to eight people. To book, call 0582561173 or email infoclarens.com.

The Ultimate Bed and Breakfast
8. Millpond House
Here’s the thing, guys: out of 38 incredible bed and breakfasts, this place ranks number 4 on good ol’ Tripadvisor. And that’s not a fluke, my friends.
I really enjoyed staying at Millpond because of its beautiful garden, stylish but slightly old-fashioned decor, peaceful location, and thoughtful details like the cozy underfloor heating. What amazed me the most is that you can choose to stay in a room-only rate, yet still experience a luxurious level of comfort without breaking the bank. They have five rooms to choose from: three bed and breakfast options in the Millpond House, and two adjoining studios in Mill Creek Cottage that give you the option for self-catering. Both studio rooms have a fireplace and French doors that open up to a private patio and the incredible garden designed by Merri Mills. The two downstairs rooms in the Millpond House also have direct access to the garden, complete with seating. However, the real gem is the upstairs room aptly named “Room with a View.” It has a small balcony with chairs where you can relax and admire the stunning garden and mountain views. Just keep in mind that Millpond is an adults-only establishment and does not accommodate children under 12 years old.
Here are some tips for room selection: If you’re looking for more space and the option to cook your own meals, I highly recommend the Rose and Walnut rooms in Mill Creek Cottage. These rooms come with a slight additional cost of R50 per person per night, but it’s definitely worth it for the added comfort and convenience.
As for pricing: The rates start at R450 per person sharing, and if you opt for the bed and breakfast package, it’s R550 per person sharing.
If you want to get in touch: You can contact Millpond House at 0828510131 or visit their website at millpondhouse.net.

13. Clarens Country House
I want to tell you about Clarens Country House, a unique place that I recently discovered. These patios offer breathtaking views of Clarens, especially during sunset when the lights start to twinkle.
If you’re traveling with your family, there’s even a family suite available that can accommodate up to four people. It’s perfect for a memorable getaway with your loved ones.
