It was already past lunchtime, and most of the take-away items were already sold out – that’s always a good sign! I also discovered that they make all their sandwiches, salads, and wraps from scratch every morning, using fresh ingredients. Anything that’s left unsold at the end of the day gets generously donated to charity.

Apart from sandwiches, they’ve got gourmet wraps and fancy salads, but that’s not all. You can also chow down on some hot dogs for R30, or grab a burger for R50. Giancarlo, who originally hails from Eritrea but was raised in Italy, knows a thing or two about Italian cuisine! His dream of owning an Italian café finally came true when he opened Giancarlo’s Italian Deli in October 2013. It may be a small establishment, but it exudes a cheerful atmosphere with pictures of Italy adorning the walls and cookbooks scattered about. The menu is displayed on a vibrant red board, and Giancarlo proudly states, “What you see is what you get.”

If you haven’t been to Giancarlo’s Italian Deli on Bree Street, you’re missing out. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

The menu is packed with amazing options that won’t break the bank. Take, for example, the bacon and egg croissants for just R22. Talk about a steal! And if you’re in the mood for a Panini or wrap, you can choose from a variety of cured meats topped with mozzarella cheese and tomato. At only R43, it’s a no-brainer.

If pasta is more your thing, Giancarlo’s has got you covered. Their pasta dishes, ranging from chorizo to bolognese to vegetarian sauce, start at just R49. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

When I went there, I couldn’t help but notice the enticing specials written on the chalkboards, cleverly arranged on a beautiful Asian-inspired room divider. The selection was extensive and mouthwatering, with prices that were definitely reasonable. Just imagining the flavors of the dishes made my taste buds dance with excitement. Picture a refreshing chilled tomato and basil soup, only for 35 Rand. Or how about gnocchi smothered in bolognese sauce and sprinkled with parmesan, all for just 55 Rand? The choices were endless. If you’re a fan of chicken, their crumbed chicken schnitzel served with a side of new potato salad is a steal at only 59 Rand. And for salad lovers, they have a tantalizing roast chicken and crispy bacon Caesar salad, complete with croutons and parmesan, also for 55 Rand. But that’s not all. They offer a vibrant Cajun chicken, chorizo, and roast red pepper salad, drizzled with tangy balsamic dressing, again for 59 Rand. And for those looking for a delicious burger, they have you covered too. With options of free-range beef or chicken, their burgers are a steal at 45 Rand. And for the vegetarians out there, fear not! They have a scrumptious sweet potato and quinoa burger topped with avocado and tomato salsa, a steal at 49 Rand. So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable culinary experience that won’t break the bank, this place is a must-visit.

If you’re in a rush, you can get take-out (they also deliver), but there are seats inside and outside. The chairs inside look really comfortable, and there’s a nice long wooden table where you can share food with friends or maybe even meet new people while enjoying a burger.

I totally loved sitting outside, listening to Latin music, and it made me feel like I was in Cuba. You can also sit inside at wooden tables with fresh flowers and candles in bottles. They’ve got pots of plants and hanging baskets at the entrance, which gives the place a cool, bohemian vibe. I thought it was really charming!

When you visit a Latin American restaurant owned by a Venezuelan, you know you’re in for an authentic experience. I was thrilled to try the tapas menu, a perfect option for lunch. My absolute favorite was the Argentinian beef empanadas (yes, I have a weakness for pies!). The mushroom sops with goat’s cheese and caramelized onions were also delightful, along with the Spanish tortilla filled with spinach, onion, and tomato. The tapas are served in sets of three (so if there are two of you, you might have to fight for the last one), and the prices range from R18 to R60. Alternatively, you can indulge in the South American Street Food Platter For Two for just R120. It comes with empanadas, burritos, and tacos, served with relishes and sauces. Caffè Delight is a hidden gem within this mini-mall. The moment you walk in, you’ll be enchanted by the beautiful décor. The walls are adorned with painted lampposts, complete with hanging baskets of vibrant geraniums. It’s like a piece of Venice right here in our city! To add to the charm, there are small tables for two right next to these lovely wall fixtures. And as you make your way to the restroom, you’ll notice that pot plants line the walls, adding a touch of nature to the whole experience.

Now, I have to admit, I didn’t actually have anything to eat or drink at Caffè Delight. But boy, do they have a delicious-sounding menu! From toasted sandwiches made with homemade bread, to mouthwatering muffins and croissants, to tempting slices of cake, there’s something for everyone. And don’t forget their wide selection of coffees, soft drinks, and freshly squeezed juices. The prices are reasonable too. Oh, and if you become a regular, they have a loyalty card just for you.

These kinds of places, like the Waalford Centre, hold a special place in my heart. It’s important that we support them, because they offer something special that can’t be found in chain-store restaurants. So, I urge you to pay a visit to the Waalford Centre.
