12 Amazing Places to Explore in Clanwilliam

Hey there! Did you know that Clanwilliam is one of the oldest towns in South Africa? It’s true! It used to be called Jan Disselsvalleij, but later it got its cool name – Clanwilliam. Sir John Cradock decided to honor his father-in-law, the Earl of Clanwilliam, by naming the town after him. How awesome is that?

Now, when you think of Clanwilliam, you might think of two things: rooibos and wildflowers. And you are absolutely right! This town is the rooibos capital of the world, and in September, it hosts the jaw-dropping Clanwilliam Wildflower Show. But guess what? There’s a lot more to Clanwilliam than just that!

If you ever find yourself in Clanwilliam, here are 12 fantastic places that you should definitely check out:

1. Desert Rose Farm Stall on the N7

The Desert Rose Farm Stall isn’t actually in Clanwilliam, but it’s a great place to visit on your way there. Just take the N7 and look for the Koringberg turnoff. The farm stall is packed with all kinds of cool decorations, and even the menu is fun and colorful. You can get all the usual farm stall food, like burgers, toasted sandwiches, pita breads, scones, muffins, pies with chips, pancakes, and salads. And if you’re in the mood for breakfast, don’t worry – they serve it all day long. If you’re bringing kids along, there’s even a jungle gym to keep them entertained. You can reach the stall at 082-884-8714. So why not give it a try? It’s a great spot to stop and enjoy some delicious food!

4. The Old Gaol (Ou Tronk) Museum

If you want to learn about Clanwilliam’s history, you should check out the Old Gaol (which became a National Monument in 1979). Inside, you’ll find a fascinating collection of items, including the town’s original telephone exchange that was used until 1995. Personally, I was most intrigued by a Cape Argus newspaper from 1896 and a teacup with a mustache on it! The only downside is that the museum is closed on weekends and public holidays. But here’s the thing: if people stop visiting, the museum might shut down altogether. The entrance fee is just R10, and trust me, it’s totally worth it. Give them a call at 082-808-2251.

6. Reinholds Restaurant

Reinholds Restaurant is located in a historic building on Main Street. The locals love it, which makes it a trustworthy choice for a meal. I had dinner there, and it was a cozy and elegant experience. The tables were nicely set with dim lighting and candles, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious, with a traditional country-style cooking that reminded me of home. The portions were generous, and their Milk Tart was the fattest I had ever seen. They also have a bar with reasonably priced drinks. You can contact them at 083-389-3040.

7. Ramskop Wildflower Garden

When I visited Clanwilliam, one of the highlights was definitely the Ramskop Wildflower Garden. It’s a beautiful place with over 350 different types of wildflowers. I’m pretty sure it’s beautiful all year round, but especially in the spring when everything is in bloom.

The garden is located against a backdrop of stunning mountains and the Clanwilliam Dam, which adds to the whole experience. Trust me, seeing all those daisies and quiver trees against that backdrop was truly amazing.

While I was there, unfortunately, the Tea Garden was closed. But I’ve heard that they offer a great selection of food when they’re open in August and September. You can get sandwiches, cakes, pancakes, scones, and a meal of the day, all at really reasonable prices. And of course, it all comes with a nice cup of tea!

8. Nancy’s Tea Room

There’s a charming restaurant called Nancy’s Tea Room, located close to Reinholds. It’s one of the many tea rooms in Clanwilliam, but it stands out for its spinach quiche. Trust me, this quiche is so delicious that it’s worth making the trip from Cape Town just to have a taste! I can honestly say that I’ve never had a better quiche in my life.

To reach the Tea Room, you’ll stroll down a passageway filled with fascinating objects, almost like an indoor market. There’s even a shop where you can buy some lovely gifts and Rooibos products. The Hen House: A Charming Tea House and Restaurant

Welcome to The Hen House, a delightful tea house and restaurant located just beyond the breathtaking Pakhuis Pass. 12. Bushman’s Cave “Bergteater”

Welcome to the amazing Bushman’s Cave “Bergteater”! This awesome mountain theater has seen some incredible performances over the years. Famous artists like Steve Hofmeyr have graced its stage, and there was even a daring attempt to set a World Record for eating the most sheep heads (though it unfortunately got rained out this year – but hey, maybe I’ll catch it next year!).

One of the most exciting things about this place is the fact that it’s an open-air theater, nestled right in the heart of nature. It’s like being in a magical world where the beauty of the surroundings becomes part of the show. And let me tell you, the atmosphere is absolutely electric!

If you’re a fan of history, you’ll be thrilled to know that the Bushman’s Cave also offers a glimpse into the past. There are incredibly well-preserved and detailed San rock art paintings that depict a fascinating ritual. It’s like stepping back in time and discovering the secrets of these ancient people.

But that’s not all – you can even spend the night here! How cool is that? Picture yourself cuddled up under the stars in a cozy camping spot. And the best part? The open-air showers nestled among the rocks. Can you imagine anything more refreshing? It’s truly a unique experience.
