As I look out over the high-altitude plateaus, I can hear the soft rumble of hooves in the distance. It’s the sound of wildebeest, waterbuck, and hartebeest grazing in the cycad-studded valleys below. The air is filled with their gentle presence, a reminder of the wildness and freedom that exists in this remote corner of the world.
To reach Stone Mountain Lodge, you have to navigate a stone track that zigzags its way up the mountainside. It’s a challenging journey, but one that is well worth it. This place is miles away from anywhere, a true escape from the busyness of everyday life. You can only access it by a 4×4 transfer or by embarking on a five-hour hike through the wilderness.
What makes Stone Mountain Lodge even more remarkable is that it operates completely off the grid. It relies on solar power, gas, and fire to provide its guests with the comforts they need. This commitment to sustainability is not only impressive but also adds to the lodge’s unique charm.
Imagine a lodge nestled in the side of a massive rock, masterfully created using natural stone. The design seamlessly incorporates the rugged cliff-face, resulting in a breathtaking masterpiece. As I enter, I’m immediately captivated by the shower, nestled at the base of a cycad that sprouts vibrant vegetation. It’s nature’s own touch of luxury.
Once inside, I’m greeted by a deck that boasts a small pool and braai area, perfect for soaking up the sun and indulging in a barbecue. But what truly captures my attention is the expansive indoor fireplace. Its warmth and crackling flames create a cozy ambiance, inviting me to kick off my boots, unwind, and marvel at the majestic mountainside. As the sun descends below the peaks, the shadows dance and creep, painting a picture of serenity and tranquility.
Before I reach this sanctuary, a hike awaits me. Starting at the Kleinrivier reception, the trail quickly ascends, presenting me with an invigorating challenge. As I continue, I navigate through valleys and ridges, surrounded by breathtaking vistas. It’s not an adventure for the faint-hearted; it demands good fitness. Hey there! Let me tell you about a remarkable place called Highlands Mountain Retreat, captured beautifully by Melanie van Zyl. Trust me, you’re in for a treat!
Now, Golden Gate holds a special place in my heart because it’s all about preserving South Africa’s grassland biome. Can you believe there are more than 50 types of grass in that park? It’s pretty mind-blowing! And right at the very top, at a whopping 2200 meters above sea level, you’ll find Highlands Mountain Retreat.
Picture this: cozy log cabins tucked into the hills, offering seclusion and the most breathtaking views you can imagine. It’s like being in a fairytale! There are eight units in total, four of them can sleep four people each and the other four are perfect for two. No matter which one you choose, you’ll have a fireplace to keep you warm, plus oil heaters and electric blankets for extra coziness. I mean, they’ve really thought of everything!
During my stay, something magical happened. I was sitting there, probably daydreaming, when suddenly, a group of zebras trotted up the hillside. It was such a surreal experience! The way they moved was graceful and mesmerizing. I’ll never forget that moment.
If you’re searching for a place that will take your breath away and make you feel one with nature, look no further than Highlands Mountain Retreat. It’s a hidden gem that will leave you speechless, I promise!
I’ve discovered some fascinating hikes in Golden Gate National Park that I think you’ll love! Most of the hikes begin at Glen Reenen Rest Camp, but there’s also one that starts behind the Golden Gate Hotel. These trails meander their way through the magnificent orange sandstone cliffs, taking you on a journey through forested ravines and windswept grasslands.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can try the Ribbok Trail, which is an overnight hike. And if you want to take things up a notch, there’s a guided hike to Cathedral Cave. To take part in any of these hikes, you’ll need to obtain a hiking permit, which costs R40 per person.

It’s located on a working fruit farm, and let me tell you, it’s a unique spot for a vacation with your friends or family.
Inside, you’ll find a cozy kitchen and lounge area. And to make things even better, there’s a warm fireplace in the corner. The sleeping arrangements here are pretty neat too. The living area has two single beds, and downstairs, there’s a bedroom with a double bed and three single beds. Behind a divider, you’ll find a double bed and a single bed, and in the passage, there’s a triple bunk bed. It’s perfect, right?
