Welcome to the third-oldest town in South Africa! Situated on the famous Cape Trade Route, this town is not only rich in history but also boasts a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere. One of the things that make this town truly special is its commitment to preserving and celebrating its natural beauty. If you want to experience the best of both worlds, look no further.
The NG Moederkerk, which was constructed in 1911, is the dominant architectural feature of the town. It’s a one-of-a-kind blend of various architectural styles, such as Baroque, Gothic, Cape Dutch, and Asian. The church’s tower, on the other hand, is a replica of a tower in Belgium.
Here’s what we discovered about accommodation in this area
- A wide range of options. Swellendam is an ideal stopover point for those traveling between Cape Town and the Garden Route, as well as for those heading into the interior (such as Route 62 and the Klein Karoo). The town offers a diverse selection of accommodation, ranging from self-catering options to hotels, from centrally located establishments to farmstays.
- An abundance of choices. We found 73 accommodations listed on TripAdvisor and 56 on Booking.com, with 36 of them receiving ratings between 9 and 10. Additionally, there are numerous superhost-rated options available on Airbnb. Choosing among them was a challenging task.
If you’re a nature lover, you’ll find this place to be a paradise. The valleys surrounding the town have breathtaking views of mountains, making it the perfect setting for activities like swimming, hiking, and biking. The real treasures, however, can be found outside the town. One of our favorite spots is the enchanting Hermitage Valley, just five kilometers away from the center. In fact, three out of the final eight featured locations are in this valley.
What sets this place apart is the hospitality of its hosts. Despite being one of the most sought-after destinations in the Cape, nobody here is resting on their laurels. This is especially true for the self-catering options. They go above and beyond by providing not just the basics like tea, coffee, sugar, salt, and pepper but also complimentary extras like wood, charcoal, firelighters, milk, and biscuits. It’s these small gestures that truly make a difference.
Now, let’s take a closer look at one of the top accommodations in the area:
1. Arumvale Country House
TripAdvisor ranks Arumvale Country House as the 8th best Bed and Breakfast/Inn out of the 42 options available.
Have you ever stayed in a place that is not only pet-friendly but also incredibly luxurious and beautifully decorated? Well, let me tell you about Arumvale’s self-catering suites and cottages. Even if you don’t have a dog or cat, you will instantly fall in love with this place!
Arumvale is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. It is located just outside of town in the stunning Hermitage Valley, offering breathtaking views of the lush green paddocks and the majestic Langeberg mountains. They have five different options to choose from – three flatlets and two cottages – all of which are absolutely stunning.
Each suite and cottage comes with a fully equipped kitchen, complete with a spacious fridge that is perfect for longer stays. You can cook your own meals and enjoy them on your private veranda while taking in the beautiful surroundings. And if the weather is a bit chilly, no worries – all the units have indoor fireplaces, and the necessary wood and charcoal are provided for your comfort.
If you have a green thumb, you will love Arumvale. They have a garden where guests are welcome to pick their own herbs and vegetables. How cool is that? And after a long day of exploring the area, you can relax in their pretty pool (just keep in mind that it’s not fenced).
For those who can’t unplug completely, don’t worry – there is Wi-Fi available, and all units come with a TV and DVD player (except for the off-the-grid Rustic Garden Cottage).
Now, let me tell you about the incredible hosts, George and Bev Missing. George is a fantastic host – friendly, generous, and down-to-earth. He will make you feel right at home. And Bev, the founder of Rain cosmetics, has created a true gem with Arumvale. You will feel their warmth and passion in every corner of this place.
So, whether you are planning a romantic escape or a fun family getaway, Arumvale’s self-catering suites and cottages should be at the top of your list. You won’t be disappointed!
Room Tip If you’re looking for breathtaking views, you’ll love the Carol Suite. It’s the perfect choice for a party of three. Another romantic option is the Anneline Cottage, which can accommodate up to four guests with its en-suite bedroom on the mezzanine level and two single sleeper couches on the ground floor. For a simpler but charming experience, the Garden Cottage is accessed via a small bridge.
Cost The cost is R600 per person for sharing a room, and an additional R200 per extra person. Children under eight stay for free. The Garden Cottage costs R450 per person for sharing (two guests in total). Take advantage of their great winter specials!

2. Hermitage Huisies
TripAdvisor No. 2 out of 27 Speciality Lodgings
Imagine three adorable little cottages nestled on a farm in the breathtaking Hermitage Valley, right next to the Wildebraam Berry Estate. They have a charming rustic charm and are designed to be practical, with each one featuring an outdoor braai area and equipped for self-catering. And let me tell you, they have some special touches that make them even more delightful.
First of all, the owner, Nadia Zaayman, has made sure that every adult bed in these cottages is fitted with a high-quality pocket-spring mattress. So you can expect a comfortable and rejuvenating night’s sleep. Plus, if you can’t live without your internet connection, don’t worry! These cottages offer unlimited Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected to the world while enjoying your peaceful getaway.
Now, let’s talk about the cozy fireplaces. Both the Rose and River cottages have indoor fireplaces that create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Just imagine snuggling up next to the crackling fire with a cup of hot cocoa or a glass of wine. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic escape with your partner or for creating cherished family memories with the kids.
Speaking of kids, they will absolutely love this place! They can roam freely and explore the beautiful stream that runs through the property. They can also have a blast petting the friendly horses, taking a refreshing dip in the pool, and, if you visit between November and mid-December, they can even go berry picking. What a fun and educational experience!
Oh, and did I mention that well-behaved dogs are welcome too? You can bring your furry friend along for just an additional R50 a night. So you don’t have to worry about leaving your beloved pet behind.
If you’re looking for a charming and picturesque getaway, these cottages are the perfect choice. They combine rustic comfort with modern conveniences to offer you a truly memorable experience. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a fun-filled family adventure, or simply a place to unwind and rejuvenate, these cottages have it all. Room Recommendations: If you’re looking for a family-friendly option, consider the charming Century-old Rose Cottage. It features two bedrooms that share a bathroom, as well as a single sofa bed in the lounge. For a more romantic getaway, the one-bedroom River Cottage is perfect. It offers a private garden next to a trickling stream, an avocado tree providing shade, and a river-stone braai for outdoor cooking.
Pricing Details: The River Cottage starts at R450 per person for shared occupancy, with an additional charge of R120 for each extra person (sleeps three). The Rose Cottage starts at R500 per person for shared occupancy, with additional fees of R160 per extra person (sleeps five). Children under 13 are charged R100. Alternatively, you can opt for the Guinea Fowl and Aardvark units, which are semi-detached. They start at R425 per person for shared occupancy.
3. Somerset Gift
TripAdvisor recently ranked Somerset Gift as the 10th out of 27 Speciality Lodgings.
When I first heard about this farm, it seemed a bit far from town, about a 20-minute drive. However, when I saw the pictures, I was amazed, and when I finally visited, I wasn’t disappointed. The location is absolutely stunning. It’s nestled in a narrow, green valley teeming with birds, and the Buffeljags River flows right through it. The property features five charming self-catering cottages and a manor house situated on vast lawns. The cottages are decorated in a simple yet tasteful Cape Cottage style, and they are spaced about 50 meters apart. This means you get your privacy, but you’re still close enough to enjoy the company of others if you’re in a group.
Every cottage has a cozy fireplace and a spacious, covered stoep with comfortable furnishings. From there, you can take in the beautiful views of the garden and mountains. There’s plenty to do on the property as well. You can go on hikes to discover waterfalls and mountain pools. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try the foefie-slide and canoe on the springwater lake.
If you’re planning a special occasion and need accommodations for a large group, Somerset Gift is an excellent choice. It can comfortably accommodate up to 48 guests. With its breathtaking setting, cozy cottages, and abundance of activities, Somerset Gift is truly a hidden gem.
Room Tip: I really loved the design and location of Rose cottage. The two en-suite bedrooms are placed on opposite sides, which gives you lots of privacy. However, all the options here are fantastic. If you’re a couple, the cozy Little Bushbuck cottage is perfect. It’s situated right by the water and is more affordable because the bathroom (which includes a protected outdoor shower and toilet) is located just 10 meters away from the cottage. Cost: The Little Bushbuck cottage starts at R800 per night and can accommodate up to three people. The other cottages range from R1,300 per night and can accommodate four to six people. For larger groups, the Fish Eagle Lodge starts at R2,200 per night and can sleep up to eight people, while the Manor House starts from R3,500 per night and can accommodate up to 14 people. Please note that there is a minimum two-night stay requirement for weekends and holidays.
4. Schoone Oordt Country House
Ranked as the #1 hotel out of 4 hotels on TripAdvisor
When you’re looking for the best luxury experience, there are a number of top contenders. However, Schoone Oordt outshines them all with its exceptional service. From the moment you arrive, you’re treated like royalty. The staff guides you to the bar in the elegant Victorian manor house, where you’re greeted with a choice of hot or homemade cold drinks and an array of sweet and savory snacks. It’s the perfect way to refresh and relax after a long journey.
Next, you’ll be escorted to your room, one of the ten beautifully appointed accommodations nestled amidst the serene garden. Each room is a lavish retreat, complete with all the modern amenities you could desire. You’ll find antique furnishings, a luxurious Victorian bathtub, and a spacious walk-in rain shower. When it’s time for bed, the evening turndown service will ensure your comfort with plush goose-down duvets. And to make your stay even sweeter, there’s always a delightful treat waiting for you on your bedside table. In the winter, the cozy fireplace will be lit, adding to the ambiance and warmth of your room.
Breakfast at Schoone Oordt is a truly gourmet experience. Served in the beautiful conservatory, it’s a three-course delight that will tantalize your taste buds. In the summertime, they also offer a delectable set dinner in the same exquisite setting. And if you’re visiting during the warmer months, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the fantastic swimming pool, adding to the allure of Schoone Oordt. It’s no wonder this place fills up quickly, so be sure to make your reservation in advance.
My Recommendation
I highly recommend requesting Room 1 or 2, or the recently renovated Family Suite if you’re traveling with a group. These three rooms offer a superior experience, with elevated views, private balconies, and a picturesque ambiance.
Pricing
For bed and breakfast, the cost starts at R1,212.50 per person sharing. If you’re a group of six, the Family Suite is available at R572.50 per person. Take advantage of the limited-time Swell Offers and themed specials valid until 30 April 2019; you can find more details online.
5. The Country Cottage
Although listed on TripAdvisor, this cottage is unrated.
If it’s not beautiful or functional, just get rid of it. That’s what designer William Morris said in the 19th century. And it seems like Gwynnedd Laubscher lives by that mantra. Her sense of good design has completely transformed a small cottage into the most adorable two-bedroom option in the whole town. And the location couldn’t be better – it’s tucked away at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, right behind the historic Drostdy Museum, and just a short walk from all the best restaurants.
Inside, there’s a cozy open-plan living area and kitchen. The dining table, which is part of the kitchen, sits across from a built-in braai fireplace. It’s both charming and practical. And for those warm summer days, there’s a shaded outdoor area with a fire pit and a brand new swimming pool. The Laubschers also own The Country Butcher, an amazing deli right here in Swellendam. Gwynnedd will make sure your fridge and pantry are stocked with everything you need. And if you’re a fan of steak, you have to try the rib-eye – it’s absolutely fantastic. Don’t forget to taste Gwynnedd’s “happy-hen” eggs and freshly baked ciabatta!
Just keep in mind that there’s only one small bathroom in the cottage. It has a shower over a beautiful Victorian tub. But trust me, it’s totally worth it for a chance to stay in this delightful place.
Hey there! Let me give you some tips about the rooms at this place. The bedrooms are a bit small, and they have double beds. So, if you have two kids who don’t want to share a bed, it might not be the best choice for you.
Now, let’s talk about the cost. It’s R600 per person if you’re sharing a room. And if you have extra people, it’s R380 per person. The room can accommodate up to four people.
6. Babette
It’s ranked as the 4th best Bed and Breakfast/Inn on TripAdvisor’s list of 42. Impressive!
When you’re looking for a great place to stay, it’s the hosts that make all the difference. And at Babette, you’ll find hosts like no other – Wim Lubbersen and Nicky Appelboom. They turn this place into a true haven, offering just three garden suites and one upstairs room, each with its own private entrance and patio or balcony. This means you won’t have to share the large, beautifully manicured garden and saltwater pool with many other people. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and relax.
Wim and Nicky are dedicated to giving each guest a highly personalized experience. From helping you plan your routes to suggesting the best wineries to visit and recommending the top biking trails, they are there to ensure that your stay is unforgettable. Wim is not only a passionate host, but also an experienced wildlife photographer. He’s more than happy to share his knowledge and guide you to the best spots for wildlife photography. If you want to explore the area, they can provide picnic baskets and mountain bikes upon request.
When it comes to breakfast, Babette doesn’t disappoint. Each morning, you’ll be treated to a delicious breakfast on the patio. The buffet is packed with homemade treats, and there’s always a daily special to enjoy. It’s the perfect way to start your day of relaxation and exploration.
Room Tip If you’re looking for a comfortable stay with an extra bed, consider booking one of the cottages. In case Babette is fully booked, give Cypress Cottage a try (see the “Worth a Look” section).
Cost The cost starts from R600 per person sharing, including bed and breakfast.
7. Fazenda Retreat
Oh, boy! This spot is absolutely incredible! It’s tucked away at the end of a bumpy road that winds through a forest filled with tall pine trees. As I make my way towards the mountain, I spot two cozy bungalows perched on the edge of a small dam. The only sounds I hear are the cheerful chirping of birds and the gentle rush of water. Marilouise van der Merwe has truly worked her magic on these log cabins, completely transforming them into breathtaking havens that offer panoramic views of the stunning Hermitage Valley. She covered the cabins in smooth river stones and filled them with trendy and repurposed furniture. The result? A place that looks like it came straight out of a fancy design magazine. Marilouise is also the mastermind behind De Companjie, a fabulous restaurant in Swellendam. And guess what? Guests staying at the bungalows (she has three rooms in town too) get a special discount at her restaurant. But seriously, who would want to leave this paradise? No TV or Wi-Fi here, my friend. This place is all about getting back to nature and enjoying simple pleasures. Think long walks, swimming in untouched waters, picnics in the forest, exploring the breathtaking canyon, biking down mountain trails, cooking up delicious meals, and just relaxing while soaking in the incredible view.
Travel Tip: If you want some extra privacy, I recommend booking the Ultimate Retreat, as it is located above the Forest Retreat. You can also book both cabins if you want to bring your teenage children along (sorry, no kids under 13).
Pricing: The cost starts at R795 per person for double occupancy. You’ll need to stay for a minimum of two nights.
Get in Touch: You can contact them at 0834461123 or visit their website at airbnb.com.

Some rooms even come with fireplaces, adding an extra touch of coziness. The family suites are especially great, as they are the only ones with a bathtub, perfect for a soothing soak after a long day.

My Favorite Rooms When it comes to the rooms at A Hilltop Retreat, Units 5 and 6 are my top picks. These open-plan suites can comfortably accommodate two adults and two children in bunk beds. They provide the perfect space for a small family to relax and unwind.
The Best House If you’re looking for a bit more space, Unit 8 is the ideal choice. This double-storey house can sleep four adults and two children, offering ample room for everyone. It’s my preferred option among the houses available at the retreat.
Luxury Corner Suite My personal favorite among the various rooms at A Hilltop Retreat is Unit 1, the luxury corner suite. What sets it apart is the extra windows it boasts, creating a wonderfully bright and airy ambiance. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a truly luxurious stay.

What to See and Do
- Explore the historic quarter around the Drostdy, where you’ll find museums, art galleries, shops, and restaurants. Don’t miss the monthly market on Saturdays.
- Visit Bontebok National Park and Marloth Nature Reserve. Both offer short walking trails through beautiful fynbos and indigenous forests.

I recently had the opportunity to go on an exciting boat trip with a braai (barbecue) on the Buffeljags Dam. It was such a fantastic experience, being out on the water and enjoying some delicious food with friends.
Another interesting place I discovered was The Zinc Shack, a studio-gallery owned by Khoi artist Donovan Julius. It’s located in Suurbraak, just 15 kilometers away. If you’re interested in art or want to explore something new, I highly recommend visiting The Zinc Shack.
Overall, it’s important to take advantage of these unique opportunities and discover new experiences. Sometimes, it’s the little adventures that bring the most joy. By trying new things and exploring different places, you can create memories that will last a lifetime.
