Every Wednesday and Saturday, you can explore the bustling morning market and find all the ingredients you need. And don’t forget to stop by Oumeul Bakery for their mouthwatering bread and farm-fresh butter. For a delightful picnic experience, head to the renowned Klein River Cheese Farmstead. And when it comes to drinks, you have a variety of options, from exceptional wine estates to the Birkenhead Brewery. With culinary gems like Marianas, Graze Slow Food Café, Springfontein Eats, and Manor House, it’s no wonder food lovers flock to this area. This place was founded way back in 1857 and it’s known as the third most preserved village in the Cape. Can you believe it? I want to tell you about the amazing Klein River that flows through the town of Stanford. It’s such a calm and peaceful river that even the Hungarian Olympic paddling team chose it for their training. They spent six weeks here because the river has no current and provides the perfect conditions for paddling. If you want a more relaxing experience on the river, you can take a beautiful sunset cruise on The African Queen.

Now, let me tell you about the incredible marine life you can find near Stanford. Just a short drive away, you’ll reach Hermanus and Gansbaai, two amazing places to explore the underwater world. Stanford is the perfect base for your marine adventures along the Overberg coast. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even get up close and personal with the ocean’s top predator. Marine Dynamics is the company you should book with if you want to have an unforgettable encounter with sharks.

1. Stanford Valley Guest Farm

This guest farm is truly something special. It has been ranked number 5 out of 11 on TripAdvisor for its unique and wonderful accommodations. When you stay here, you’ll experience the beauty of the surroundings while enjoying all the comforts of a top-notch lodge.

You won’t believe it, but me and my partner almost moved to a farm in France! Can you imagine? Luckily, we found this amazing 440-hectare farm right next to Raka wine estate in Stanford. We fell in love with it and decided to buy it instead. We worked hard to transform the lodgings and homestead, and our efforts paid off when we won Sleeping Out’s Best Establishment in Stanford 2015 award. Now, this place is perfect for hosting big celebrations!

The farm has three self-catering cottages, 10 en-suite rooms, and three family cottages. Each cottage has its own stoep and garden, and they are all clustered around a large central werf. The atmosphere here is just incredible. When you step onto the property, you’ll feel like you’re in a different world.

When I decorated the cottages, I wanted to create a unique and comfortable space for our guests. The decor is a mix of quirky vintage and contemporary classics. I hand-picked the art pieces and used natural textures throughout. I wanted to create a sense of simplicity and tranquility.

Our self-catering cottages are fully equipped with everything you need, but I recommend booking a few meals at the Manor House. The food here is incredible! Madre Malan, who also established Madre’s Kitchen, oversees the kitchen. She prepares sophisticated farm fare with fresh ingredients and lots of flair. And the views from the Manor House are breathtaking. You can see the Akkedisberg mountain range through the large windows.

Tip for choosing the perfect room: All the rooms at Stanford Valley are cozy and stylish, and many of them even have a wood-burning stove or fireplace. Personally, I have a soft spot for Stables Cottage, Pincushion, and Erika. They have these beautiful ancient walls and amazing views.

2. Springfontein Sleeps

Ranked 4th out of 9 B&Bs and Inns on TripAdvisor

A few minutes away from town, down a gravel path by the Klein River estuary, you’ll find three newly renovated cottages on Springfontein wine farm. Out of the three, Milkwood is the biggest and most secluded. Inside, there’s a cozy lounge centered around a large, open fireplace, and a patio with its own outdoor fireplace. The charming Fisherman’s Cottage is much smaller, with just a bedroom featuring a double wrought-iron bed and a bathroom. It also has a small patio area outside, though it’s not as private since it’s right next to the farm entrance. The most recent addition, Riverside, is not quite as successful. The best option for a romantic stay is Riverside Suite No. 2, which has a spacious fireplace facing the bed. This suite is also the only one with direct access to the pool. However, if other guests are using the pool, you’ll need to draw the curtains for privacy. Don’t miss out on the farm’s top-rated restaurant, Springfield Eats, which holds the number one spot in Stanford on TripAdvisor.

Price – The Fisherman’s Cottage costs R1000, the Milkwood costs R1600, and the Riverside suites with a pool cost R1200 (all sleep two each). As for the house, it costs R3800 and can accommodate up to six people.

3. Flower Cottage

I have found some really cool old cottages for rent, and one of them, called Bugler’s Cottage, is especially charming (see page 43). But let me tell you about this other cottage called Flower Cottage, because it is in an amazing location. It’s at the end of a quiet street, right by the lush banks of the Klein River. On the other side of the river is the Old Pastorie, which is a really pretty building. You should definitely do the Stanford Historical Walk, because Flower Cottage is number 24 on the route. Guess who used to live there? The village undertaker!

The cottage itself is from the 1920s, and it still has a lot of its original features. One of the best things about it is the big front porch. You can sit there with a cup of coffee in the morning or have a drink while watching the sunset. The kitchen is also great. It’s a big, country-style kitchen with enough space for a big dining table. The cottage has a nice living room, four bedrooms (three with queen beds and one with two single beds), and two bathrooms. And the back garden is right next to Marianas, which is one of the best places to eat in the Cape. You can literally just walk a few steps and you’re there!

Price: The cost starts at R1100 for two people, and it’s an additional R200 per person for up to eight people. There is a minimum stay of two nights, which increases to five nights during the peak season.

The main lounge and dining area is huge and there is also a spacious kitchen. Outside, you can take a dip in the 10-meter pool or explore the 180-hectare wild garden. The stoep, or porch, is a great place to relax with comfortable seating and a large dining table. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Klein River estuary and majestic mountains. On chilly days, you can cozy up by the indoor hearth and warm yourself by the fire.

Tip for Choosing the Right Room: This place is perfect for two families! They have two front en-suite rooms with queen beds that are exactly the same size and have the same view and fittings. They also have three twin-bed bedrooms. One of them has its own en-suite bathroom, while the other two share a central bathroom that you can enter from either side.
