When you step into the Rustic Cottage at Arumvale, it feels like a place where you could settle in for a long time. Even though it’s small, being a converted labourer’s cottage, it doesn’t feel cramped at all. In fact, you get the most amazing view of Swellendam’s Hermitage Valley through the double doors at the end of the bed, which creates a sense of spaciousness. The cottage consists of one cozy room with a bathroom attached and a two-plate gas stove – just right for two people. But if you need more room to stretch out, you can make your way up the hill, about 30 meters away, to the Anneline Suite. This two-story suite accommodates four guests, and the mezzanine bedroom has a terrace that offers even more stunning views.
If you’re looking to explore Swellendam’s heritage area, make sure to stop by Field and Fork. The building itself is quite amazing, and it’s even a part of the Drostdy Museum. I’ve heard that the menu changes every few weeks, but you can always expect delicious food and outstanding service. While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on tasting the berry liqueurs at Wildebraam Berry Estate or taking a hike on the scenic trails that start right outside your front door.
Just a heads up, there’s no electricity at this place, but they do have LED lighting and a unique hot-cold-hot-cold gas shower.
For more information, you can contact them at Tel 02 5143545 or visit their website at arumvale.com.
Moving on to the next recommendation: KolKol Mountain Lodge in Bot River. This place is just a short hour away from Cape Town, and you can book a night for two guests starting from R2,300. It’s a great option for a quick getaway.
When you start to go up the gravelly Van der Stel Pass right after Bot River, you’ll be amazed by the breathtaking views that await you at KolKol Mountain Lodge. These beautiful log cabins overlook a vast valley filled with fynbos (which is a part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve). And when you relax in the hot tub on the porch, you’ll feel like you have the whole place to yourself, with the peacefulness and tranquility that surround you. The cabins themselves have a cozy, rustic charm, with handmade furniture, a gas stove, and an outdoor braai. They provide all the comforts you need, and even the wood is already prepared for you, so it’s easy to light a fire.
I’ll give you a range of options to choose from when it comes to accommodation. You can pick one of the four cabins that can sleep between four to ten people or the tent that’s set up on the hill. If you’re a couple or a small family, Bugsy’s cozy charm will surely win you over. Although it can sleep up to four people, the loft upstairs is specifically designed for two kids and has mattresses on the floor. The bedroom has large windows that let in a refreshing breeze and offers a king-sized bed to sink into.
The kitchens in all the cabins are fully equipped, so you’re all set for cooking. However, if you feel like heading out for lunch, you can visit Gabriëlskloof Wine Estate, which is just 15 kilometers away. And the best part? You’ll get a 10% discount on your bill if you show them your cabin key.
If you’re up for some outdoor adventure, there’s a three-kilometer nature trail that starts from the cabins. It’s a great way to explore the beautiful surroundings. And don’t worry, you’ll be provided with a map of the trail along with your welcome note.
For any queries or to make a booking, you can contact them at 076 9136014 or visit their website kolkol.co.za.
Now let’s move on to option number three: Windtown South Africa in Langebaan.
Price: Starting at R1,600 per night. That’s a great deal!
Travel time from Cape Town: Only 1 hour and 30 minutes. You’ll be there in no time!
At Windtown South Africa, we believe in a simple and exciting concept for your vacation: a focus on two favorite sports in Langebaan – kite- and windsurfing. Located just two blocks away from the lagoon, it’s the perfect spot for an adventurous getaway. Our hotel was inspired by the original Windtown in Brazil, and we knew that Langebaan would be the ideal location for Windtown number two!
When you’re not out on the water, our rooms offer a tranquil escape, opening up to a welcoming courtyard and sociable pool area. For added privacy, book a room on the top level. Inside, the walls are adorned with a tasteful combination of dark brown and beige, complemented by natural wood and vibrant red lamps that inject character and warmth. It’s not about being overly fancy; our focus is on creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Plus, our painted screed floors make it easy to clean up any sea sand that finds its way into your room (which is practically a must on such an outdoorsy holiday). And don’t worry if you didn’t bring your own gear – our on-site shop offers rentals and sales of a wide variety of watersports equipment.
When it comes to dining, Windtown’s Breeze restaurant is a favorite among locals. We recommend booking a table when you check in to avoid disappointment. While the catch of the day is always a great choice, our Asian prawn curry is known for its burst of flavors that will leave you satisfied and coming back for more.

4. Aloe Ridge, Swellendam
Price: Prices range from R1,150 to R2,625 per night, depending on the season.
Travel time from Cape Town: It takes approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes to reach Aloe Ridge from Cape Town.
When I first step into Aloe Ridge, I am immediately struck by its beauty. The high ceilings and open-plan living areas create a sense of spaciousness and freedom. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I can see the breathtaking view of the Breede River. It’s truly a sight to behold.
As I make my way up the cobbled pathway, I am filled with anticipation. The five newly built houses, perched on a ridge overlooking the river, beckon me to come closer. Inside, I am greeted by the warm and inviting atmosphere created by the richly textured stone and wood surfaces, as well as the sleek furnishings.
The two en-suite bedrooms, located on either side of the living area, offer a level of privacy that I appreciate. The beds, whether I choose a double or two singles, are incredibly comfortable. The large cupboards provide ample storage space for all my belongings. And the luxurious touches, such as indoor and outdoor showers as well as big baths, make me feel pampered and relaxed.
Cooking in the modern open-plan kitchen is a social affair. I can gather with my loved ones and prepare a delicious meal together. The built-in braai area under the patio adds a special touch to our dining experience. We’re even provided with 50 pieces of wood upon arrival, so we can start grilling right away. The only difficult decision is whether to dine inside or outside, depending on the weather. Once that’s settled, we draw straws to determine who’ll have the honor of packing the dishwasher.
The houses are equipped with everything we need for self-catering. However, it’s important to note that the tap water isn’t drinkable. We’re given 10 liters of water to start with, but for a longer stay, we may need to bring some extra.
Aloe Ridge is truly a haven for anyone seeking a beautiful and comfortable retreat. The stunning surroundings, combined with the elegant and earthy atmosphere of the houses, create an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait to come back and make new memories in this idyllic setting.
When I visit the Breede River area in winter, I can’t help but notice the chill in the air. However, thanks to the cozy inside fireplace, the cold is easily tamed. And that’s not all! As I relax by the river, I have the wonderful opportunity to witness African fish eagles gracefully gliding above me as I swim, kayak, or fish.
5. Mountain Mist, Betty’s Bay
Price: Starting at R1,950 per night for the house (sleeps six)
Travel time from Cape Town: Just a short 1 hour and 15-minute drive
Imagine this— the best thing about a holiday house isn’t being near the bustling beach. Instead, it’s enjoying the tranquility and escape from the seaside crowds. That’s precisely what sets Mountain Mist apart from other options in Betty’s Bay.
Located just a little over an hour’s drive from Cape Town and close to Hermanus, known as the whale capital of South Africa, Mountain Mist offers a serene getaway. Tucked in the fynbos against the majestic Kogelberg mountains, this hidden gem is situated at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac.
What makes Mountain Mist truly special is its breathtaking views. Every bedroom in this six-sleeper house offers stunning panoramas, allowing you to soak in the beauty of nature. The neutral decor enhances the serenity of the surroundings, creating a peaceful ambiance throughout the house.
If you’re looking for a place to stay that offers all the modern comforts, look no further than Mountain Mist. This cozy retreat has everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing getaway.
The house features a fully equipped kitchen, so you can cook up your favorite meals without any hassle. There’s also a washing machine, so you don’t have to worry about running out of clean clothes during your stay.
After a long day of exploring, you can unwind in the living room, which is equipped with a flat-screen TV and a DVD player. There’s limited DStv available, so you can catch up on your favorite shows or watch a movie.
The house has three bedrooms – a master en-suite and two rooms that share an adjoining bathroom. Each bed is equipped with an electric blanket, so you can stay cozy and comfortable during those chilly winter nights.
Outside, you’ll find a beautiful garden with loungers and a cold-water spa bath. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. And if you’re in the mood for a barbecue, there’s an undercover braai area where you can grill up a delicious meal.

To book your stay at Mountain Mist, contact them at Tel 0761266912 or visit their website at mountain-mist.co.za.
6. Miskloof Farm, near Ceres
Price: From R3,000 a night for up to six people (R250 a person thereafter)
Travel time from Cape Town: 2 hours
You won’t believe how secluded this farm is. There’s no electricity or cellphone reception, and it’s surrounded by rocky hills. Miskloof is the ultimate hideaway that you’ll want to visit over and over again. They’ve turned a big barn into a cozy house that can sleep up to 10 people. There’s even a space for entertainment, perfect for a group of friends or family. The tranquility of the place makes it ideal for relaxing with a good book, going for a leisurely walk, or simply chilling in the terraced lounge. If you visit during the summer, you can spend your days lounging by the pool, which used to be a reservoir, while enjoying the stunning mountain views. Or you can hang out on the sundowner deck, waiting for the sky to turn into a beautiful mix of purples and oranges as the sun sets. Don’t worry about being in the dark because they provide plenty of candles and lanterns. There’s also an indoor braai area and a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove and all the utensils you’ll need.
When you’re heading to Miskloof, it’s crucial to pack all your essentials and groceries because the nearest eatery is a whopping 50 kilometers away in Ceres. However, this remote location offers some unique opportunities for outdoor activities. For example, there’s a special track available for quad biking, so if you have your own quad bikes, be sure to bring them along. Additionally, there are also mountain biking and walking routes to explore. Don’t forget to pack a few carrots, as some donkeys often pay a visit.
Keep in mind that the road to Miskloof is a gravel road and is better suited for vehicles with high clearance. In fact, it’s recommended to have a 4×4 vehicle in order to reach the sundowner deck.
7. Oudebosch Eco Cabins, Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve
Price-wise, you can expect to pay around R1,100 per night for a group of four at Oudebosch Eco Cabins. However, in addition to the accommodation costs, there are also conservation fees of R40. From Cape Town, it should take you approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach this scenic destination.
Hey there! Let me tell you about this amazing place called Oudebosch. Don’t let the word ‘cabin’ fool you – it’s not your typical small and old-fashioned accommodation. Here, you’ll find modern houses made of glass and timber, connected by raised wooden walkways that lead to a beautiful swimming pool. These self-catering units were built using renewable materials, and they have a minimal impact on the environment. How cool is that?
Each cabin can sleep up to four guests and has two bedrooms. The bathrooms are equipped with a shower, basin, and a self-composting toilet. Yes, you read that right – no flushing necessary! It may seem strange at first, but you’ll quickly get used to it. The rooms themselves have a sleek and minimalistic design, with quirky touches like chandeliers made from recycled bottles that add some character.
One of my favorite things about the cabins is the roof garden. It’s such a peaceful space where you can relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. And if you’re in the mood for some fresh air, the lounge, dining room, and kitchenette area all open up to a deck or courtyard. Perfect for those warm summer nights!
So, if you’re looking for a unique and eco-friendly getaway, Oudebosch is the place to go. You’ll be amazed by the modern cabins, the beautiful surroundings, and the sustainability practices they have in place. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
When it’s nighttime at the reserve, getting to a nearby restaurant can be quite tricky. The lack of lights makes it challenging to navigate. That’s why it’s best to plan ahead and prepare your own meals. Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of hassle!
To fully enjoy the serene atmosphere of the reserve, I recommend opening the sliding doors and letting the refreshing breeze sweep through. It’s particularly delightful during the hot summer months. Alternatively, you can spend a leisurely afternoon lounging on the pool deck. Either way, you’re in for a treat!
8. Oewerzicht, Greyton
Price: You can stay in one of the cozy cottages for just R 990 per night. What a steal!
Travel time from Cape Town: It takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach this delightful destination from Cape Town.
When I arrived at Oewerzicht, the first thing I wanted to do was to kick off my shoes and roll up my jeans, ready to splash into the refreshing waters of the Sonderend River. And let me tell you, I wasn’t disappointed. The range of accommodation options here is truly amazing. You’ve got your classic caravan park and campsite, nestled on lush green banks. Then there’s a farmhouse a little way up the river, and further still, a cozy cottage perched atop a hill with stunning views of the water. But, if you ask me, the real showstoppers are the safari tents.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – a safari in South Africa? Well, sort of. These tents aren’t out on the savannah with lions and zebras. Instead, they’re tucked away among the trees, accessible via a thrilling trek across a suspension bridge. Trust me, the effort is totally worth it. When you step into your tent, you’ll find it decked out with comfortable beds, a handy little kitchenette, and even an outdoor braai area. It’s like camping, but with all the comforts of home.
And let’s not forget the kids! There’s so much for them to do here. They can splash around in the river or explore the vast stretches of embankments. You can relax and enjoy the peaceful scenery while keeping an eye on their adventures. It’s the perfect spot for a family getaway. So, why wait? Kick off your shoes, roll up those jeans, and dive into the adventure that awaits at Oewerzicht.
If you’re looking for a place to stay where you can cook your own meals, all the accommodation options here are self-catering. Each unit and campsite even has its own braai for you to use. But if you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal, there’s a small town called Greyton just 10 kilometers away. You’ll find a handful of cafes and restaurants there.
One of the highlights of this place is the 20-kilometer mountain bike trail that runs through the farm. It’s a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. If biking isn’t your thing, you can also go for a leisurely hike along the same route.
While there are some trees in the camping area, they’re still too small to provide much shade. So make sure to bring a canopy if you’re planning on spending a lot of time outside.
If you want to book a stay or have any questions, you can contact them at Tel 0282549831 or visit their website at oewerzicht.co.za.
9. Old Mac Daddy, Elgin Valley
If you’re on a budget, you’ll be happy to know that the price to stay at Old MacDonald starts from R1,995 per night for their trailer suites. It’s an hour’s drive from Cape Town, so it’s not too far away.
Up on a hill, surrounded by orchards in the Elgin Valley, you’ll find an enchanting sight: 12 shiny silver Airstream trailers. They each have their own unique names like “For ‘Better or For Boerewors'” and “Yellow Submarine,” and they’re bursting with personality. Step inside and you’ll discover a world of vibrant decor and captivating color schemes. Every trailer is like a work of art in itself.
Take the “Mills and Boon” trailer, for example. It’s a luxurious haven that’s sure to awaken your inner romantic. Soft pink velvet curtains, cushioned walls, and prints of attractive couples set the stage for a love story. And if you’re craving some literary passion, just check under the (very pink) couch for a stack of classic romance novels.
Despite their compact appearance, these trailers are cleverly designed to maximize space. Two of them sit by the dam, each with its own outdoor deck and a bathroom tucked away inside. The other 10 are connected to a private bathroom and an elevated balcony. Inside the living area, there’s even enough room for two kids to sleep on comfy couches.
When it comes to food, you’re in for a treat at the on-site restaurant. They serve mouthwatering woodfired pizzas that will leave you craving for more. And if that’s not enough, their seasonal grills and pastas are absolutely divine. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, you can enjoy a delightful afternoon braai beside the pool. It’s the perfect way to relax and soak up the beautiful surroundings.
If you’re a fishing enthusiast, you’re in luck! You can hire a fishing rod for just R50 and try your luck at catching and releasing bass in the nearby dam. It’s a great activity that will definitely elevate your stay.
We take our commitment to the environment seriously. That’s why all the products in our bathrooms are eco-friendly, and we even recycle the shower water. We believe in preserving the natural beauty of our surroundings as much as possible. That’s why we have wooden walkways that connect the trailers to the restaurant, minimizing any disturbance to the environment.
