Discover 11 Amazing Things to Do in the Langeberg Region
Food is one of life’s simple pleasures that I absolutely love savoring, especially when enjoyed slowly and with good company. The charming towns of Robertson, McGregor, and Montagu have truly mastered the art of delightful dining experiences that combine wine, food, and culture, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance that is hard to resist. The Langeberg region in the Western Cape offers an array of friendly faces, tantalizing wines, and delectable dishes. If you’re wondering how to make the most of your time here, let me guide you with some exceptional options.
Uncover the Best Experiences in the Langeberg Region
1. Treat Yourself to an Amazing Brunch at Bodega
At Bodega de Vinho Restaurant, we not only offer a delightful dining experience but also have a shop and deli for you to explore.
When you find yourself near Rooiberg Winery on Route 62, you can’t miss our restaurant. And if the enticing aroma of freshly baked croissants, Danish pastries, and pecan tartlets doesn’t draw you in, our famous ‘Red Chair’ will. It’s the largest chair in South Africa, and it’s definitely worth climbing to the top, where you can savor a cup of our freshly brewed coffee and take in the breathtaking views.
Our winter menu includes something special – soup bread bowls, which are bowls made entirely of crusty bread filled with delicious, hearty soups. It’s a warm and comforting treat that is perfect for the colder months. In addition to that, we serve traditional English breakfasts and a variety of homemade breads, all lovingly prepared by our friendly staff.
If you’d like to get in touch with us or make a reservation, you can reach us via email at [email protected] or give us a call at 023-626-1663. We look forward to welcoming you to Bodega de Vinho Restaurant!
2. Eat your way through Robertson
In Robertson, I had the incredible opportunity to experience the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Cape Malay and Boerekos food. It’s a truly special experience when someone you’ve never met before prepares their favorite dishes for you, especially if those recipes have been passed down through generations of loving grandmothers and mothers.
As I embarked on a journey through Robertson, both culinary and historical, I was amazed by the incredible influence of different cultures and the unique flavors that were born from them. The first stop on our tour was Nolu’s house, located in the vibrant township of Robertson. Nolu had prepared a feast fit for thousands with her vibrant and colorful dishes. Among her creations were a unique twist on the traditional Umqqusho, a delicious tuna salad samp. We also indulged in fresh farm chicken, accompanied by a delightful beetroot salad made with Bulgarian yogurt. The meal was perfected with steamed creamed spinach and tender sheep tripe.
So, let’s talk about Cape Malay cuisine. Have you ever heard of it? Well, it’s a special kind of meal that the Malay community used to make when they didn’t have much money. They called it the King’s meal, or in their language, “Koningsmaal.” I got to try it, and let me tell you, it was delicious!
The King’s meal is a stew that’s cooked in a special pot called a potjie. It’s made with potatoes, ox trotters, masala, garlic, ginger, bay leaves, and cloves. And you know what? It smells so good! They also serve it with samp, which is like a type of grain.
After that, I tried some traditional Boerekos, but with a modern twist. It was really tasty! They served it in little cups made out of phyllo pastry. Inside the cups, there was bobotie, which is a kind of meat dish, and also pear and malva pudding. And to top it off, they had caramelised butternut skewers. It was all so yummy!
If you ever get the chance to try Cape Malay cuisine, I totally recommend it. Just make sure you come hungry because there’s so much delicious food to try. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
If you want to know more or try out these tasty dishes for yourself, you can get in touch with Avril Netherton at Tantalizing Tours. She can give you all the details. You can contact her at [email protected] or give her a call at 082-532-8302.
3. Raft down the Breede
As I sat in the back of the inflatable raft, navigating the Breede River with our knowledgeable guide, the only sound I heard was the rhythmic sploosh of my friend’s paddle hitting the water. I relaxed and admired the deep blue sky above, watching as the sun’s rays danced on the smooth surface of the river. With a gentle push to the left and a slight nudge to the right, it felt like we were an unstoppable duo as we conquered our first small rapid along the 6km route in Robertson.
The Breede River is a fascinating waterway that weaves through beautiful fruit and wine farms before flowing into the Indian Ocean at Port Beaufort. Surprisingly, I didn’t come across any fish during my adventure, except for a bass that made quite a splash as it leaped into the water just a few meters away from our raft. The Breede River is a popular spot for fishing, where you can try your luck at catching bluegill and carp. We effortlessly navigated the first rapid, skillfully avoiding the rocks and even managing to escape a close encounter with what we thought was a crocodile! As it turns out, it was actually our neighbor’s inflatable raft positioned right in our path. We had a good laugh and let the mighty Breede River guide us to the next thrilling part of our journey.

4. Experience the beauty of opera at Wahnfried
If you’re looking for a place to enjoy piano concerts and opera, you should visit Wahnfried in the small town of McGregor. This unique movie house, located in a converted villa, is a haven for arts and culture enthusiasts.
When you step inside Wahnfried, you’ll feel like you’re in a real theater. The spacious interior creates a special atmosphere that enhances your experience of watching movies, listening to live concertos, and attending opera performances.
Freddie and Michael, the founders of Wahnfried, are passionate about bringing musical and artistic experiences to their community. They have transformed this quiet corner of the Langeberg into a vibrant cultural hub that is open to the public.
At Wahnfried, you can enjoy a variety of movies, from classics like “Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man” to popular films like “Good Will Hunting.” The screenings are held with high-definition picture and surround sound, ensuring a top-notch viewing experience.

5. Get Acquainted with Grappa
Hey there! Have you ever heard of grappa? If not, you’re in for a treat! Grappa is a wonderful spirit that is deeply ingrained in Italian culture. It’s made from leftover grape skins, seeds, and stems that are typically discarded after the winemaking process.
Now, you might be wondering why anyone would want to turn leftovers into a drink. Well, let me tell you, the Italians are onto something extraordinary here! Grappa is not your average alcohol. It’s a spirit with a rich history and a unique flavor profile that sets it apart from other drinks.
When you take a sip of grappa, you’ll notice its vibrant and distinctive nature. It has a powerful aroma that can range from floral and herbal to fruity and even a bit spicy. The taste is bold and intense, yet somehow smooth and warming. It’s a sensation that takes your taste buds on a rollercoaster ride of flavors.
Grappa is commonly enjoyed after a meal, acting as an excellent digestif. Its high alcohol content and complex flavors stimulate the senses and help aid digestion. Plus, it’s a great way to prolong the enjoyment of a good meal with friends or family.
Now, let’s talk about how to properly enjoy grappa. First, you should serve it chilled or at room temperature, depending on your preference. Some people enjoy it neat, while others prefer it on the rocks. It can also be used as a base for cocktails or added to coffee for an extra kick.
When it comes to choosing the right grappa for you, there are a few factors to consider. The production process, the type of grapes used, and the aging process all contribute to the final product. It’s worth exploring different producers and regions to find the one that suits your taste preferences.
So, if you’re looking for a unique and bold spirit to add to your collection, why not give grappa a try? It may be a lesser-known drink, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. Grappa is a hidden gem in the world of spirits, waiting to be discovered by adventurous palates like yours. Cheers!
The Lemon Eau de Vie is a star at Tanagra
I have to admit, I don’t know much about grappa. It has an alcohol content of 35% to 60%, which is enough to make you feel lively and energetic. When I first smelled it, I was almost overwhelmed by its strong aroma. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that Italians actually add this fiery liquor to their morning espresso, which they call a caffè coretto or ‘corrected coffee’. If it’s not part of breakfast, it’s often enjoyed as a chilled after-dinner drink, sipped slowly and in small amounts.
In the quaint town of McGregor, I start my day at Tanagra Wine and Guest Farm with Robert Rosenbach. He has a unique skill – distilling a fragrant elixir from the leftover parts of grapes after the wine-making process. But it doesn’t stop there; he also uses other fruits like apricots, peaches, quinces, and grapes from his own farm to create his signature products. One of them is the Lemon Eau de Vie, made from his very own lemons. Now, let me tell you, grappa and Old Brown Sherry are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they do have their charms. I personally think they’re best enjoyed on a chilly winter evening, warming your soul.
6. Have a Blast at the Wacky Wine Festival

Where to eat
7. De Kaap Restaurant
You’ll find some truly delicious country cooking at its absolute finest in this warm, cozy, restored farmhouse restaurant just outside of McGregor. The menu is hand-written on the chalkboard and showcases a wide array of dishes that will leave your mouth watering and your taste buds dancing with joy. Whether you’re in the mood for something light and refreshing, like the beef carpaccio with parmesan shavings, or something hearty and comforting, like the slow-cooked Moroccan lamb shanks, this place has got you covered. And if you’re a steak lover, you absolutely have to try the aged rib-eye steak served on a bed of creamy risotto. It’s pure perfection.
As for me, I couldn’t resist starting off my meal with a plate of deep-fried camembert that was served with a tangy cranberry dipping sauce. It was the perfect combination of rich, creamy cheese and sweet, tart cranberries. For my main course, I opted for the fragrant prawn curry, which was bursting with flavors of fresh coriander and served with a crispy poppadum. And for dessert, I treated myself to a slice of heavenly hazelnut pavlova topped with juicy figs, tangy gooseberries, and a dollop of fresh cream. It was the perfect way to end a truly memorable meal.
