11 Fun Activities to Experience in McGregor

Don’t let the peaceful appearance of this charming country village fool you. McGregor offers a myriad of exciting activities and attractions that will ensure an unforgettable weekend getaway.

They say McGregor is a place trapped in time. With its picturesque thatched cottages, tranquil streets, and serene atmosphere, it certainly feels that way. However, don’t be deceived by this nostalgic façade. McGregor and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of experiences that will make your weekend stay truly memorable.

1. Explore the Tanagra Wine Farm

In 2009, a duo of adventurous spirits—a business consultant and a linguistics professor—purchased a farm in McGregor, bidding farewell to their corporate lives in Germany. Robert and Anette Rosenbach embarked on a new journey, embracing nature and the art of winemaking. Today, they proudly produce delightful boutique wines, including Marc (affectionately known as Grappa in Italian) and Eau de Vie (a range of fruit spirits).

Hey, have you ever heard of Tanagra Wine Farm? It’s a cool place to visit on your way to McGregor. When you get there, you’ll be greeted by an energetic dog. How fun is that? They have a distillery with a big copper pot still all the way from Germany. You can take a tour and learn all about it. Oh, and don’t forget to try their tasty wines and grappa in the tasting room. It’s a neat spot, because the room also doubles as an office. Plus, if you overindulge a bit (and let’s be honest, that Marc can really go to your head fast), they even have accommodation. And guess what? When you arrive, there’s a huge fig tree that’s pretty hard to miss. It’s actually the reason why the farm is called Tanagra. “Tanagra” is a Khoisan word that means “main shade.” Neat, right?

2. McGregor Wines

Hey there! Let me take you on a journey to the McGregor Winery, a place that’s been around since 1948. With its rich Scottish heritage, every bottle of wine produced here tells a captivating story of a village nestled at the base of the picturesque Riviersonderend Mountains. This place exudes charm and tranquility, creating an unforgettable experience.

At McGregor Winery, they’re passionate about crafting exceptional wines. They work with 12,000 tons of grapes to produce around 9 million liters of wine. Their range includes a variety of delightful wines like Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Colombar, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Ruby Cabernet, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each sip will transport you to a world of flavors and aromas.

If you’re in the area, drop by the winery for a tasting. You can do this any day of the week, Monday to Saturday. Unfortunately, they’re closed on Sundays, so plan your visit accordingly. They also open their doors on most public holidays, so keep an eye out for those special days. And while you’re there, don’t forget to check out their charming postcards, perfect for capturing a piece of McGregor’s magic.

3. Post Office Whisky Bar

When I first arrived in McGregor, there wasn’t a pub to be found, and no whisky either. As someone who appreciates a good dram, I couldn’t let that stand. So, I decided to open The Post Office Pub, a place where people could gather, share stories, and savor a fine malt. You see, I’m not just a pub owner, I’m also a whisky connoisseur. I’ve ventured to nearly all the distilleries in Scotland, immersing myself in the world of whisky. And now, I’m here to share that passion with you.

Step into my pub and you’ll discover a collection of almost 100 whiskies, each with its own unique character. From the smooth and mellow to the rich and smoky, there’s something to suit every palate. Now, I know what you might be thinking – whisky can be expensive. And yes, I have some rare and coveted bottles that might set you back a pretty penny. But fear not, my friend. I come from working class roots in Manchester, and I believe that good whisky should be accessible to all. That’s why I also stock whiskies that won’t break the bank, so everyone can enjoy a taste of the golden elixir.

But it’s not just about the whisky. It’s about the experience. When you step through the doors of The Post Office Pub, you’re not just entering a bar – you’re entering a world of stories and camaraderie. I’ll be there behind the bar, ready to regale you with tales from my travels and share my knowledge of whisky. Pull up a stool, grab a dram, and let’s embark on a journey together.

When I think about John’s pub, I can’t help but smile. It’s a place where whisky lovers gather, but even if you’re not a fan, I guarantee you’ll have a great time. John’s pub is open every day from 5:30 PM, and it’s a spot worth checking out.

And hey, if whisky isn’t your thing, don’t worry! They also have a selection of beers on tap. So you can enjoy a cold one while you’re there. And if you’re feeling a bit hungry, they have a simple menu that will satisfy your cravings.

If you want to reach John’s pub, you can give them a call at 023 625 1571 or 083 258 6261.

4. The Art Route

When it comes to small towns and art, they always seem to go hand in hand. And McGregor is no exception. This charming little town is home to many talented artists, and you can discover their creations on the dedicated Art Route.

The Art Route will take you to 10 galleries, where you can meet incredible artists. From potters to jewelry makers, from chandelier creators to sculptors and oil painters, McGregor has it all. I was particularly captivated by the ethereal artworks of Edna Fourie and the beautiful pottery at Millstone Pottery.

At the Tourism Office on Voortrekker Road, you can pick up a brochure containing a map, opening times, and contact details. It’s a helpful resource for navigating McGregor.

5. The Saturday Morning Market

If you wake up early enough on Saturday morning and make your way to the church square by 9:00, you’ll discover a bustling marketplace filled with locals. Here, you can find and buy fresh produce, baked treats, preserves, jams, and even handmade jewelry. The market usually wraps up in about an hour or two, so set that alarm and don’t press that snooze button if you want to experience it! I must admit, though, I have never made it to the Saturday market because hitting the snooze button is my talent. But the market is on my to-do list for my next visit to McGregor, and it should be on yours too!

6. Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

As you’re driving towards McGregor, you’ll come across a sign on the left that says “Eat, bray, love.” If that doesn’t make you smile, then go ahead and turn into the Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary. Trust me, spending an hour or two in the company of these wonderful creatures will definitely put a big grin on your face. Donkeys just have a special way of brightening your day.

Hey, did you know that donkeys can live up to 40 years? It’s pretty impressive, right? But unfortunately, the ones that pull carts only make it to around 15 years. I guess hard work really does take its toll.

Anyway, if you’re interested in learning more about donkeys and the incredible work that the sanctuary does to educate people about donkey care, you should definitely pay them a visit. Not only will you get to spend time with these amazing animals in their peaceful sanctuary, but you’ll also discover some fascinating facts, like how doughnuts are a big no-no for donkeys and how they need to see a farrier twice a year.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out their restaurant! You can grab a bite to eat while supporting the sanctuary’s cause. They also have a shop where you can buy cool donkey toys and license stickers. And hey, if you’re really passionate about donkey welfare, you might even consider adopting one.

7. Krans Nature Reserve

When I visited Krans Nature Reserve, I was amazed by its beauty. It’s hard to believe that this place used to be a dump many years ago. Now, it’s the perfect spot for a peaceful morning walk. You can enter the reserve from Smit, Van Reenen, or Voortrekker Streets. As I strolled along the pathways, I couldn’t help but admire the stunning views. The rocks were adorned with beautiful spring flowers, creating a vibrant and colorful scene.

One of the highlights of my visit was the incredible variety of birdlife. It was truly mind-boggling! I highly recommend bringing a pair of binoculars to get a closer look. As I continued on my walk, I discovered that there are several different paths to choose from, each offering its own unique experience. And if you need a rest, don’t worry – there are benches scattered throughout the reserve where you can sit and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

But it’s not just humans who can enjoy this nature reserve. Dogs are also welcome! So if you have a furry friend, be sure to bring them along. They’ll love exploring the trails and taking in the sights and scents of this beautiful place.

9. Rhebokskraal Farm Tour and Cooking Course

When I visited the Rhebokskraal farm, I was immediately charmed by the beautiful farmhouse, a true National Monument. But that’s not all there is to see! You can also learn all about olives, and even participate in a cooking tour with the talented Annalien.

During the tour, you’ll get to create delicious dishes with olives as the star ingredient. And as if that’s not enough, you’ll also receive an apron, a CD of Annalien’s own farm music, and a recipe book to take home. If cooking isn’t your passion, don’t worry! You can still take a tour of the farm and enjoy olive tastings and a lovely lunch. Just remember to book in advance!

10. Movies and Music at Wahnfried

Every Friday night, I eagerly head to Wahnfried on Bree Street. It’s a cozy place that’s all about music and movies – a true haven for art enthusiasts like me. The vibe here is reminiscent of The Labia in Cape Town, complete with a glass of wine in hand. The only difference is that I’m in the heartwarming town of McGregor, where a crackling fireplace adds to the charm.

When you step into Wahnfried, the experience begins with a welcoming glass of wine. Before the movie starts, you can take a leisurely stroll through the exquisite gardens if time allows. It’s truly delightful. Michael and Freddy kindly share their movie collection with us, and the best part is, it’s absolutely free. Of course, donations are always appreciated.

The movie screenings take place every Friday at 17:15, while Sundays are reserved for musical soirees at 15:45. If you’d like to know what’s showing, simply give them a call at 072 601 1616 or drop an email to [email protected]

11. Massage therapy

Aside from enjoying the scenic countryside, why not pamper yourself with a rejuvenating massage? There are many skilled therapists in McGregor who offer various treatments and holistic healing methods that work wonders for your body, mind, and soul. One therapist I highly recommend is Lizelle Erasmus, who specializes in the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu. This gentle massage technique helps release blockages, stress, tension, and other ailments.

Lizelle has a treatment room at Temenos and is available throughout the week. If you schedule your appointment with her, I suggest you arrive a little early and take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Temenos gardens. It’s the perfect way to set the tone for your relaxing experience.
